This analysis effectively demonstrates how visual evolution serves as a narrative blueprint, transforming character design into a profound psychological study. It proves that in high-level animation, every aesthetic choice is a deliberate extension of the character's internal conflict.

FIBSY POP. You make a million characters and then people expect me to document them all for a video. They're spoiled by video essays. They won't leave without like, comment, and subscribing. I WON'T LET THEM. I'm better. I DO MORE RESEARCH. I MAKE THE HASBRO TAL ANALYSIS VIDEOS. I AM A YOUTUBER.
HEY, THIS video sucked to make. You know, when I made that digital circus video, I was able to bring out like almost 30 minutes of analysis on just seven characters with minimal notes from the creator. And then I was like, let's do Hasba next. I'm sure it won't take long. So, I wrote that intro before I actually started doing research on this as a joke. It's not a joke anymore. This video took way longer than I thought I would. Originally, I was just going to go through the characters in alphabetical order and the design development. Uh, but then I quickly ran into a problem where it was basically just this character starting Zophobia.
This character is inspired by character Zophobia. This character is similar to a character in Zophobia. And it would have been boring and sucked and I hated doing it. So instead, I'm going to briefly briefly go over all these phobia connections here and the rest of the video will be everything outside of that. The digital circus video was mostly analysis because the creator didn't have much history with the creation and hasn't spoken that much about her thought process behind the designs. That does not apply here as the Spindle Horse crew are very open with the thought process and most characters have been around for more than a decade.
So this video was more development history than straight analysis. That being said, I will sprinkle in my own interpretations throughout. Most the information I got for this came from the hellverse and Zuphobia wikis alongside the busy pop archives and Tumblr.
Absolute lifesavers as Madrano has nuked a lot of her social media. So these would have been lost forever if not for them. Since I run this between season 2 and three, some information will likely be outdated. Because this I will not be going over the various characters slated to show up or have cameo in the background and I'll only be going over major players. So most of the overlords are out. There's just not enough information to go over without wild speculation. If you want to see my wild speculation on the overlords, let me know and I'll make a companion video to this one. I'll likely do an updated version once the show is over. But for now, let's go over what we do know.
Okay, so what is Zuhobia? Zuhobia is a web comic that follows these five anthro high schoolers in a place known as Safe Haven. Safe Haven is where a lot of magical creatures live together, but have a tenuous alliance to keep the peace that can fall apart at any minute.
It's caused phobia because the main character Cameron has a fear of animals but was forced to be the school counselor in safe haven. But she loses focus pretty quickly, mostly playing support to others and having a subtle arc of moving past her fears. Sort of like Pomny in a way. I would never understand creators that do this when they have clear favorites and then decide to not make them the main character. I get there are characters you build out of necessity. Panda was like that for me, but when I made her, I worked very hard to make her one of my favorites. It's way more fun to write a story when the favorite is the lead and your audience will notice that. I think Madonna figured that out too by the fifth chapter and the bad luck Jack short Cameron is nowhere to be seen. But I digress. The film feels like a right of passage every artist goes through to figure out their voice. The throw everything at the wall and see what sticks kind of story. It's similar to the stuff I made when I was like 14 that was essentially Adventure Time ripoff that doesn't exist and you can't prove anything. I think people who love Bizzy Pop stuff and those who hate it have the same reason. It is a 13-year-old's fanfiction with a budget. It's very manic, self-indulgent, all over the place, full of ammunes, and has a million characters. I mean, just look at the [ __ ] Zophobia wiki. Oh god, there's a second page. I say all of this with love in my heart. I don't really like Sophobia, but I do appreciate it unabashed creativity. Uh, this emo scene middle school cringe energy is so hard to keep as an adult, and I respect the [ __ ] out of it. My biggest criticism is that I wish it was more creative, cuz as it is, it's just a high school AU of itself. Anytime a story focuses too much on high school antics or drama, I clock out. I have blocked out every memory I have about high school and the fries cannot say that. Zuphobia origins.
Outside of characters that are from the bibble, most everyone has been has their origins here. An arc that was planned for down the line would have featured these angel and demon characters. I've seen some people call this the angels and demons arc, but it's hard to say if that would have been the actual arc's name or if it's just this standalone comic. I couldn't find a lot of information on the plot. Unfortunately, it seemed like it was going to feature conflict between heaven and hell. And from this one comic implies that genocide angels were in search of safe haven likely to wipe out the demons.
With that concept, you can tell much of this got retoled into has been including the main cast decided that this demon gang was fleshed out enough to become its own story line which led to the show we know today. Has hotel went through several different name changes as it began to form its own identity. Titles included people like us, demon hotel, the last hotel, and has been hotel with an S. She later changes the S to a Z because, and I quote, I want to be middle school and make it has been because I like Z's. # adult.
I love this show. On to the cast.
Charlie. One of the biggest changes to development was the main cast. For instance, Charlie was sort of a late addition. A demon with her name was there with the original Misfits, but barely showed up. So, when our Charlie was brought back for Hasbin, it was way later than all the other main characters, second only to Serpentis.
Charlie's original design, if you can even call it that, was radically different on every level. Uh, Zuobia Charlie was a sinner who had a giant [ __ ] you lava hand, literally fiery hair, and a steampunk aesthetic. As I have a handful of drawings, very little can be gleamed of her character. She seemed like the kind of tired big sister type and described as the dead mother of the demons. But J considers this a completely different character from R.
Charlie, and the only holdovers were the name, fiery hair motif, and role is dead mother. I real this is my favorite of the scrap designs. I've always had a soft spot for steampunk looks, overalls, and goopy bodies that can transform into stuff. She was made for me. It's a shame that none of these traits were ever reworked into any other character we've seen. That being said, this fanned out goopy hand did come back for a second in the season 1 finale. One last connection to phobia is with another character, Addison. Addison is different in most every way, but I think Mana got attached to this blonde swoopy side bangs haircut and repurposed it for Charlie. Also, I bring it up because look how many [ __ ] drawings are of this guy. What is wrong with her? What kind of obsessive freak draws the same green snake boy that is even the main character over and over this much?
Alistister. Characters like Alistar, funny enough, have changed the most and least in terms of design and personality. I say this because the earliest depiction was this a recolor drawing of two deer all the way back in 2007 when Madonna was 14. This screenshot seems to be taken from a Bambi movie or something, but I couldn't find the original source. I honestly really like this. Reminds me when I edited Mario PGs to be my evil princess OC's. And if you guys ever go to my old Deviant Art and see them, no you didn't.
You saw nothing. This the second time now. Take your pills. Elser was later redrawn and retoled into a more familiar face. A manipulative cannibalistic deer demon that smiles all the time. The main differences between then and now was that he was a shape- shifter that took on other characters forms and did not have the radio element yet. That would be added later as Madonna listened to you're never fully dressed without a smile from the musical Annie with a radio filter over it. His color scheme was also predominantly black with red accents instead of the other way around.
Sh the Hedgehog's persona. Other changes was that Alistar was planned for several romances instead of being the asexual and possibly a-romantic character he is now. At one point, Mimsy was going to be his wife. Uh he also had something going on with this phobia character Casey and a bizarre obsession with a character named Autumn. Whether that was romantic or not is unclear. Predator prey joke, I don't know. I can't think of one. Angel Dust. Angel Dust actually didn't get a starting phobia, but was designed for a college thesis project back in 2013 known as the Spider Brothers. She doesn't really talk about the plot of the thesis. It only gave us concept art to go off of. It seems we have followed Angel Dust and his brother Arachnus do their jobs as assassins for an insect mafia. Because of this, Angel's real name would have been Martin as a reference to Martin Scorsese. It was later changed to Anthony, likely because the name is closer to Angel. Spy Brothers got passed up due to being too complex for what needed to be a standalone short and being devoid of color. Eventually, she settled on Timber. And honestly, her Timber art is a personal favorite. I really like Timber's design with the yellow overall dress and especially the rounder face she got later. It's very cute. But anyways, Angel had a more sarcastic and playful attitude where Arachnus was more serious and focused. This dynamic seemed to eventually morph into hell of a boss with the characters Blitz and Moxy.
However, the mafia angle is still present as he is depicted with Italian-American heritage, a striped suit, and sporting an atomic gun. Now, you may be thinking, why make a gangster a spider? Well, according to Vivipop, it's because it represents their web of crime. Uh, Aspen Arts donated $5 and they said, "Is Angel and his family spiders because of their web of organized crime?"
>> Where's the gun in this house? Yeah, that's that's basically kind of why like it's it's I I've always associated like the theme of like for some reason like I always thought of spiders with like crime like like they just feel like a crimey thing and like webs and and lies and you know all that. So So his whole family takes the form of like spidery creatures. I can say that. That's that's kind of a rule. Uh, funnily enough, this doesn't actually fit well with this species of spiders that you are based off of, the jumping spider. Jumping spiders do make webs, but it's to lay their eggs in, not to catch prey.
Though, I suppose you could still use that as analogy to how he's connected with his family, like how their family is already born into this web of crime.
It also seems to be a holdover from their assassin jobs where they would kill other insects, like how spiders eat bugs. Even back then, this theming was more obvious with Arachnus, both in name and his web, bow tie, and Tilka. But it is still there with Angel even without the limbs. Drumming spiders are fuzzy.
They have stripes on their body and are sometimes gray and black. Angel in his original design was more gray and the stripes are present across all iterations. Now on to the weird distinctive head thing he's got going on. Here's some mega secret ultralore that I was able to uncover. Angel, Vaggie, Nifty, and Baxter are all revamps of way older characters that we've never seen before. Just lost some sketchbooks. But Angel also has some elements from this old character known as Ronaldo, who had the same swoopy haircut and similar face structure. It also seems possible that he was given traits from another character, Camila.
Camila seemed to be a favorite of Madranos as she's one that she drew quite a bit despite not showing up often. Uh Camila was a sex worker who put on a rough and hard exterior, was more of a girl gang, and seemed to be ashamed of her heritage as he tries to hide her dear ears and tail, and of course is Red and Pink. Camila may have also been reworked into Carmela given the name similarities and both having a love of a dance. That being said, she is still around as you can see her make a brief cameo bad like Jack. One less interesting thing is that Angel seemed to have been interested in drag from the start. You think that would come later with this more effeminite overhaul, but these elements were always present.
Vaggie Vegina Martha was a straight man girlfriend of Angel Dust. Yes, they were a couple of some cursed [ __ ] here. The few comics that existed of Vag and Angel didn't have them act too differently than how they do now. and who does something for shits and giggles and baggy yells at him over it. She really likes writing dysfunctional couples like this for one reason or the other. I guess I can't judge. I do the same [ __ ] with my characters. The difference is I don't have them [ __ ] usually. Baggie's early design was this purplish gray woman that wore a mostly black dress with a red symbol in the middle. Uh she also had this weird purple bow cloak hoodie thing that could become her wings. Clothes becoming moth wings was something that would later get reworks for Valentino. And like Valentino, Baggie is based off of moths. Vagu is originally a prostitute that was murdered back in the 80s. And to Madrido, she considers a moth a butterfly of the night. Her black and red color scheme is also meant to allude to a black widow for reasons that never came to be. Given her background and Baggie's violent episodes, I think you can guess she would kill her clients or something. Baggie has gone through the most amount of redesigns of any character, and thankfully I could talk about that mostly in the hasband section, but the consistent elements that were kept in the Zuobe era was her subtle moth motif, similar proportions, the bow, and the color purple. Nifty.
Very little has changed with Nifty's design and personality over the years.
She died in the 1950s, had a violent streak, and was boy crazy. Uh, her appearance was that of a Cyclops with a flip hairstyle, a poodle skirt, polka dots, and blood splatters. So, yeah, nothing too drastic here. Main difference is that her design had more polka dots, some of which would turn into eyes. She's also quite a bit taller, around the same height of Mimsy.
And this is likely changed to lean more into her bug motif that comes up on occasion. And this is speculation, but since Hollow Knight was released during the pilot's production, it's possible that Nifty's height and proportions may have taken inspiration for that game as well. Regardless, Hollow Knight almost certainly influenced the show, as Nifty's fighting style is rather reminiscent of Hornet. The 50s element is obvious, but Nifty was also inspired by sci-fi bee movies and the song OneEyed Giant Purple People Eater.
Sewing was also a frequent theme as she would be depicted with buttons and a giant sewing needle. Lastly is her bug theme, which is by far the most subtle element, only really being present with her stick-like proportions. Husk. Husk was designed by Madr's little sister, Marita, and was originally this dragon lion hybrid teenager, a rather laid-back character despite his tragic backstory of being lost from his family and being wounded by poachers. I love him. Side note, I had to go through Marissa's old deviant art for my research, and I can't prove this, but I felt like she read Warrior Cats. I have no evidence. I just know it in my heart. Marita eventually gifted the character Madrano, thinking she could give him more of a purpose.
Interestingly enough, he was paired up with Angel right from the start due to Angel being a favorite of Marites. Same with how the gambling magician motif was immediately incorporated into his design upon being gifted. I can't quite tell when he switched between a dragon line and a winged cat. It was before or after Madron took him. Uh, regardless, the dragon party is no longer present. The only holdovers were the wings, the weird tail flare, and these feathery eyebrows.
Sir Pentious. This one is cheating a bit because her penis wasn't created in the Zophobia era kind of. Uh there's this one character she pulled a lot from, Zanthos. Zanthos will also have the moniker Senor Penis that would get shortened down to Sir Pentes. He shared a lot in common with Sir Pentes in that they are both snake men with eyes all over their bodies. Main differences in design is color scheme from all green to gray with yellow and red accents and in personality. Santos is a lot more serious and respected whereas Pinches was always this papish joke. Interesting holdover is that Zanthos and Zophobia was a dad to four kids. This seemed to have worked its way as a gag reference in the pilot.
>> Oh, harder, daddy, son.
>> Most of the early concept art focuses on Alistister, Angel, Dust, Vaggie, Husk, and Nifty, and those have stayed rather consistent, but characters like Mimsy, Baxter, and yet to be introduced character of Crimeony would have been a part of the main cast as well. These ended up getting shafted because characters like Charlie and Sententious became more prominent, but they were involved for so long. So, I think it's important to go over them. Mimsy.
Mimsy's characterization and design has stayed consistent throughout the years.
Flapper girl that's greedy and cowardly hiding behind stronger demons to protect herself. Design-wise, there's two big changes in her outfit. One is that her dress is made to be more extravagant, which is on brand from vagina. Pink with what looks to be film strip accents. The curvature of the chest piece and the tail end, plus the spikes, makes it look like the dress is a mouth. Like her quest for fame and fortune has consumed her. Next is her feather headband with several eyes poking out. Feather headbands were actually an artifact right before the flapper era but got conflated with them. Anyways, the reason why is actually kind of interesting.
King Tut's tomb was just opened. So head pieces that could resemble that of an Egyptian queens became all the rage.
Something that oddly fits for Mimsy Baxter. Baxter was influenced from the character Myron Reduct from Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law. Both of them being tiny nasely sounding geeks that need to be pushed into a locker.
>> I hate him. I love him. I hate him. I love him and hate him. [laughter] Uh uh main differences is that Myron is more incompetent and seemingly less put together than Baxter is. Like I said, in much of the concept drive of the show, it seems he would have been a main character. The leaked pitch bible planned for him to appear as early as the third episode. Why he got shafted, I'll explain later. He was a blue demon.
It looked like he may have been a bellhop, but I found nothing that said he was one.
Backstar would have also looked like a normal guy, but it's just blue for some reason. Also had the same [ __ ] ass Bob as Alistar. But really likes the Karen cut for some reason. Don't become a hairdresser. Crime. Crime was this red and yellow wolf-like demon. Uh whether she was a sinner or a hellhound is not clear. From the beginning to now, she had this punk rock attitude to her.
Before it was more party animalike, but has since changed to a more grumpy one.
uh likely because she was too similar to JJ, another Zuphobia character in terms of design and personality. Poppy wants to say Crimenney has been scrapped because it's been two seasons and she hasn't made appearance since the pilot.
But also, this is Vizzy Pop. She has never scrapped a character in her life.
That stick figure drawing she made when she was four. Boom. Star of our next epic sci-fi adventure in theaters now. I know I said I wouldn't do characters that didn't show up yet, but I want to keep that joke in. [ __ ] you.
I wrote this before the Zophobia cartoon got announced, which just goes to show you I'm always right. Carmela Carmine.
Not much info is available on Carmela's development. However, it seems like she was based off an old side character in Zophobia known as Olivia. Uh both sharing black and white color schemes and being ballerina. One of her daughters is also very similar to his character, Dr. Angelica. Cherry Bomb.
Cherry Bomb was originally the daughter of Angel Dust and was also an angel. She had this mobster look to her and would have collaborated with another character, Christine and Izzy, a demon hunter. The latter you can see make a cameo in the Attic music video. The idea of Angel having a relative in heaven seems to be moved to a sister Molly. I will not be going over for this. She had a pretty basic design, just a woman with red hair and a white suit. That said, she has scars across her eye, both paralleling her then father and the cyclops she would become, Rosie. Rosie doesn't have any derophobia counterpart.
She does, however, have a character that looks very similar to her with Hilda, a demon nanny. They may have both been pulled from Hello Dolly and Windos, which I'll get into later. The V's. The Ves don't really show up in Zophobia.
Closest thing being various characters that share traits with them. Fox has basically this one drawing of a TVheaded child I think and nothing else. Given this one drawing is from a guide on the eyes and Zophobia and he has the old school pupils. He might have just been created to demonstrate this idea. He also ended up taking the same name Vincent from this guy. Mrena really likes moths. So there's several different characters Valentina pulled from a scrap project known as Alice in Wonderland that had this sinister looking moth creature. There's also a few moth characters in Zophobia. Dandy Odito who is the son of the sin of gluttony. not that one and Malia, a moth gangster that hires a spider brothers.
Arguably, he took the most from Mothalia given that she has a furry robe that's made of her wings and has uneven antenna. Velva took influence from three different sources and was more obvious in her pilot design. One was based off an old friend of Madrano who became a side character in Phobia, Stevan. Stefan was this fashion designer who was rather eccentric and had this frilly pink outfit. Another was from this one-off sketch, sorry, an angel with big pigtails and a poofy dress. She also pulled a little from Vaggie as Madana wanted Vaggie to have a new outfit every episode. Lastly, her beta design took inspiration from the cut character VA with the fluffy pigtails and eyes in the bow. Hey, wait a minute. That's four.
The angels. I'm lumping them all together because thankfully there's only a handful to go through and not a lot of info I could find. And the phobi angels will get composited into separate characters. The major players are Dena, Emily/ Uriel, Gabriel, and Chainsaw.
There's some others, but they show up for half finished sketches, so [ __ ] them. No line art, no rights. That's what I always say. Adena is the angel that got the most focus. A soft spoken but genocidal angel that only wanted to torture and kill demons. Her character was split between all the female angels.
Color scheme and rank went to the seraraphim sisters. Bloodthirsty and vengeful attitude went to loot and flowing hair and serenity went to the speaker of God. Adena also had a yellow griffin that likely got combined with her for the speaker as well. As for the other angels, there's not as much info.
Obviously, Emily took the same name but had no other similarities. Chainsaw, a violent angel with blood stains on her clothes, and Gabriel, who had a similar haircut, also got worked into salute.
St. Peter and Abel being blonde, may have also been a hold over from him.
Zestile. Zestile doesn't have a Zhobia counterpart, but at this point, I was losing my [ __ ] mind and looking for any character that had vague similarities, cuz I knew I knew I was going to miss one if I didn't. Oh, this character has green and black in their color scheme. Oh, and they were a retired villain. Fine. This the precursor to Zestrial. I get to make that decision now. I know they didn't come up with him just for the show. As we've seen, Madrido has not had a single original thought since 2014. I am 11 pages deep into this. I just finished the Zophobia part. Every time I think I've got to the bottom of this, the crown caves in, and I find a new layer.
Character design is honestly something I do for fun, have less fun, and be a little bit more miserable for me, for my sake. I I don't understand. Why does she create so many characters? They get like two lines of dialogue but still have names and pages on the wiki and she draws them like 300 times only to never use them again. Why? Surely the audience doesn't actually expect me to go over every single Zobia character for this, right? I'm not going to get ton of annoying comments talking about how I skipped over Zophobia Lucifer cuz he had more in common with Satan, right? Maybe you're just generally bad at character analysis.
>> Shut up.
>> Your audience would rather watch rant videos than your stuff.
>> Shut up. Patrick, maybe you deserve to have less subscribers than Finn the Pony. You're always worth the lesser of the two. Media illiterate.
ENOUGH. WHO do these commenters think they are? I spent hours looking at Sparkle DOG ALT SKINS AND THEY SPIT IN MY FACE. FANCY POP. YOU MAKE A million characters and then people expect me to document them all for a video. They're spoiled by video essays. They will leave without a like, comment, and subscribing. I WON'T LET THEM. I'M BETTER. I DO MORE RESEARCH. I MAKE THE HASBRO TAL ANALYSIS VIDEOS. I AM A YOUTUBER.
SUCK IT UP, YOU little [ __ ] >> Welcome back.
>> Okay, actually has been now. Charlie, our Charlie took inspiration from dolls and marinets as is represented in her pale skin and rosy cheeks. Now, why they went with the puppet theme, I'm not sure. If I had to guess, it's because characters like Alistister try to puppet her around to get what he wants. You can also associate that with how dolls and marinets are these children toys but are still a little spooky. Her suit is obviously that of a hotel manager, especially the name tag, which is honestly pretty funny to think about.
Why do you have a name tag? Who wouldn't know you, princess of hell? Charlie has goat legs as a nod to how demons like Satan or Lucifer are often depicted with goat features. This form, however, is more stylized to be closer to a human's legs that has hooves. No, she's based off a sat, not a goat. Sats have goat legs. GET OFF MY DICK. CHANGES from the pilot to series was a more readable braid because generally what is this hairstyle? Peuples went from black to red possibly so they can stand out against her eyelashes and as an inverse of her demon forms eye colors and black pants to dark red likely to have her stand out in front of a silhouette crowd. An interesting detail is that she's given blonde hair likely as a way to still look fiery like I said before and because Lucifer is sometimes depicted as blonde in artwork. Given her names are also Morning Star and Charlie's cheerful nature. You can also link her blonde hair to her sunny disposition. Lastly, Charlie takes inspiration from Disney princesses, especially with her songbird nature. I think she's similar to characters like Rapunzel, someone who is upbeat and optimistic, but is tossed around the narrative and has a lot of self-doubt.
Vaggie. Baggie has gone through the most amount of redesigns. The first major one was her having blue curly hair, a hook nose, darker skin, and a more 80s inspired dress and leg warmers. The leg warmers are a nice touch as she was likely inspired by the fuzzy legs that moths have. Shortly after this, her hair became a darker blue and the more cohesive shape of Sonic doing a spin dash. The haircut may have been a hold over from a character in the Spider Brothers concept, Mothalia. She had now lost the eye and had her bangs covering it. The X is there now, but it wouldn't become the stark red until a little while later. Then was scrapped when she was redesigned again and then the X went back to black. The design was relatively the same, but now we had white hair.
This may have also been when her Latina ethnicity was finalized, given that she has a sugar skull earring, but that could have been earlier with a darker skin tone shift. Hard to say for certain. There we get this weird marriage between the two designs where her hair was both blue and white. That didn't last long obviously and quickly went back to white. Should we know that Baggie's bang resembles that of a feathery wing? Moth wings typically don't look like this both in real life and in her art. But's hair does have a similar look, but I choose to believe that this is when Baggie is decided to be a fallen angel, especially in conjunction with the missing eye to match up with the phrase eye for an eye.
After this, we got a design that stayed the longest right up to the pilot. She trade out her blacks and reds for grays, pinks, and whites. She finally committed to getting extensions, got a more form fitting dress instead of the poofy one, and swapped the leg warmers for thigh highs. Another hold over from her moth motif is in the leggings as the stripes can look similar to the stripes you see on moth legs. At this point, it seems like her sex worker background was still in place as she has two X's over where her breasts would be.
>> Yeah, where are your tips?
>> The change from pastel goth to her current design was likely done to fit her character more. A goth look works for someone that was more angsty and maybe depressed where a current outfit fits the hotel employee status more.
Also, it's just much easier to animate.
A major change in themes was the inclusion of these disembodied eyes and mouths that would follow her and suicidal imagery. While the suicide imagery has an obvious meaning, the eyes and mouths could mean anything.
Madronalist said that there was more focus on mental health for her. So, one could say that this was reflective of schizophrenia or anxiety or being judged. There's also the biblical setting and Baggie's background and self-loathing. You can also read it as fear of God's judgment, especially since the high ranking angels will occasionally sprout more eyes. Something I think is neat with many of the female characters are these really defined eyelashes. Baggies are a subtle hint to her being an angel, given that her eyelashes resemble wings. Did do you get it? Because they're eyeliner wings.
Alistister. A major inspiration for him was 1920s New Orleans and Voodoo. You may think that's because of Princess and the Frog and that he is based off of Dr. Facilia, especially since Madrido is a fan of the film. However, this version of Alistister predates the movie by a year and was just a coincidence. That said, Fostis, an artist on the pilot in comics, later said they did take influence from Dr. Facilia when drawing him, so make of that what you will. As Motel has a mix of iconography from what is true to the original mythology and the stereotypical perceptions of the same concept. The depiction of voodoo is no different, having both symbols used in the religion and using stitches and doll-like demon assistants that are based off what people think voodoo dolls look like. Voodoo dolls historically look very different. And while modern ones can use cloth, they still don't look like this. Should be noted that Hasbin has been criticized for its depiction of voodoo, such as getting things wrong and veering into harmful depictions. I won't get into it here, but I'll link to an analysis in the description. What I will say is that they had the right idea removing that element for the series and having it just be a more vague blood magic instead. It has been the designs of the sinners seem to be punishments in some way to reflect their sin. Alistar's deer elements are reminiscent of his life and death on Earth. Alistster was a serial killer, a hunter you could say, and he was disposed of in the same way after being mistaken for a deer. In death, he was demoted from predator to just prey, and his bullet wound would appear in his full demon form as an X. Speaking of which, his symbols kept some of the swirls from his earliest concept art.
Other symbols resemble an X over a circle, possibly the illusion to his death, or since he sprouts black tentacles from his back, he could be an illusion to Slender Man, as the symbol is associated with the Marvel Hornet series. Aster also takes influence from windos. Windigos are often depicted in pop culture as a human with a deer head, which you know, fitting for Alistar.
Windigos can also be depicted as ravenous giants that can never satiate their hunger. Something know about the proportions in the holiverse that they're often meant to be stylized from the animal they're inspired by. For instance, Alistar's shoes are meant to look similar to deer hooves, the same way Charlie's are similar to a goat. A more subtle one is that Alistar's ripped tail coat resembles the shape of what else? A deer's tail. Lastly, we'll go over his fashion sense.
is all red, typical for the show, but could be an illusion to the blood splatters he would attain when committing murder. He wears pinstripes as would be the fashion at the time of his death. And last interesting thing to bring up is the shirt has an upside down cross. The upside down cross is historically the symbol of St. Peter, which we'll get into. However, contemporary uses depicted as a symbol of the Antichrist or demonic activity in general. Alistar is fueled to commit murders so he can gain more power in hell and is actively going after the throne itself. So, him having this symbol could be a way of him liking himself to the prince of hell, angel dust. His gray color scheme was eventually dropped around 2015 when he started to be colored with more pinks and reds. It was there before, but now instead of an accent, it became the main color. There's only more to sex work and feminacy than this masculine gangster persona he had before. I'm not sure why she changes to this, but since Angel was her favorite character to draw for a while, I'm assuming he changed to fit in better with her updated taste. Part of this redesign was also an attempt by Madrido to make this weird and unconventional looking character into a sexy porn star. Despite what you might think, and what I thought too, Madro doesn't really design characters with them being sexy in mind. Just what she would find appealing. People just end up wanting to [ __ ] them anyways, regardless of intent, which is so real. I'm always surprised when people find my characters sexy. I very rarely intend them to be [ __ ] Not a bad thing, by the way.
Y'all are freaks. Love you guys. On the analysis front, Angel being a spider where his abuser is a moth can be symbolism and how Angel has more power to stand up to Valentino than he may think. Angel has several powerful friends that can find ways to get him out of his contract. Hell, I can think of one right off the top of my head, have them destroy the studio. The deal is that Valentino could deal whatever while in the studio, so the deal will be null and void if the studio didn't exist anymore. Side note, I think the show's implementation of deals is a really clever play on the deal with the devil trope, where business deals and working for shitty bosses are the equivalent of selling your soul. How so many people are pushed to doing this because they're desperate and or lack support systems.
Taking this trope and making a cornerstone of a series is so creative and interesting. Husk Husk has stayed relatively the same past 2015 up until the pilot. The biggest change being the color scheme now having a black and white coat that can look similar to a tuxedo most likely to fit in more with the magician theming complete with a top hat and bow tie. While those elements are all over the place in Hasband, I feel like it was more incidental. It's just that all the male characters have occupations that would have suits, ties, and even top hats. Also, men's fashion, especially formal wear, is just incredibly boring. One of the reasons the character designs change so much from pilot to show is that the pilot was animated, for lack of a better term, in house, whereas the show was animated overseas. And for reasons I will never understand, the show is animated frame by frame, meaning simplification is important. This is all to explain why a lot of the card symbols that were on design in the pilot are absent in the show instead of being replaced by his wings resembling a roulette board. Same reason Husk has pants with suspenders, both because it's something a bartender would wear and so it' be easier to separate his body parts into different layers for animating. Nifty. Like I said, Nifty hasn't really changed that much over the years. There are two major changes between Pilot and series. That would be the outfit and her skin tone.
Nifty's outfit went from the standard 50s attire to being a maid's outfit with a poodle skirt and scarf. The shoulder sleeves were simplified as just circles that go into this what a weird latex bodysuit or something rather than the more natural flow it originally had. It also switched to a different color likely as a way to simplify the design.
Same with the maid apron as now the poodle doesn't have to be drawn as much and we don't have to worry about the polka dots anymore. Also does make sense in universe. She wears street clothes in the pilot before getting hired and a work uniform in the show after getting hired. Next is her skin tone change, going from a light yellow to a stark white. This is likely done because when Nifty was created, Madron didn't have a race in mind with her. It wasn't until after she was cast in the pilot by a Japanese woman that she started to write her as Japanese American. And as you can imagine, they probably don't want their one East Asian character in the show to have yellow skin. On top of that, given her white skin, actually falls in line with Japanese symbolism, as white can be associated with death and mourning.
Serentious. Serpentas was originally meant to be a one-off joke character for the pilot, but Madrid eventually came to love him, so she put him on as a main character. Once we saw his backstory, a lot of his design hearkens back to his sin of sloth. I thought a bit about why I think his sin is sloth in this video, which I'll be honest, I kind of halfassed it and made it like a weak. I thought to myself, and people are going to watch it, so now I feel bad. Anyways, one of the biggest elements from his design pre and post redemption is the extra eyes he has. His backstory shows him watching people have sex and witnessing a murder he refused to do anything about. Vagos once said that Pantress is just in constant pain due to the eyes being on parts of his body that he would have to move on. So it's easy to see that his look but don't tell actions are reflected in his punishment.
And once he was redeemed, most of those eyes were removed. So him not reporting his client to the authorities led him to being represented as a snake. Makes sense. But why keep him as a snake in heaven? Well, the obvious reason is that if he was put back in his human form, the audience wouldn't be able to recognize him and there wouldn't have been enough time to explain it. But that reason is that he has definitely spent more time in this body than his human one. He likely grew attached to snake element, so he would just keep it in heaven. I mean, why else would he call himself serpentious >> like a serpent? Adorable.
>> Cherry Bomb. Cherry Bomb was blended in with another character, Diesa. There's not much on Diesa outside of her design and association with Izzy. Uh, once she became Cherry Bomb, not much has changed in terms of design or personality. Big exceptions seem to be that Da was more gambling themed as she has a few Ace of Spades symbols on her. Outside of that, not much to talk about. Uh, most design elements after this are mild simplifications or a pallet change.
Other elements of her design are pretty self-explanatory. Her hair looks like a lift fuse to a bomb. Her clothes are tattered due to being around explosions often and to show her punk attitude. And the X's may hint to either her death or her precision in her aim. Honestly, I think her design is the strongest in the series. While the designs in the series are interesting, dynamic, creative, they don't really show too much about their character or you have to really look for it and read into the designs and see what they're going for. But with Cherry, her design shows her attitude, her specialty, her personality. It's great.
Carmela Carmine. Carmela's design was inspired by ballet and super villains, as can be clearly seen in her stockings and face mask. The super villain angle is obvious given that she's a weapons dealer, but the ballerina characterization may be to indicate her disciplined nature or that she's always kept on her toes. The ballet theme comes back during curtain call as her low cut top and hair bun resembles swan lake attire. It seems her tail coat is also designed to resemble a tutu as well.
Most common perceptions of tutus are the ones that are spread out like this and are known as pancake tutus. Other tutus that fall more naturally are known as romantic tutus which seems to be where Camila's costume lies. Because of her black and white theming and her knowledge on the exorcist, many think that she may be a fallen angel. I don't know if I agree with that, but her color scheme does indicate a gray morality. It likely comes from the black and white swans from Swan Lake representing good versus evil. The red contrast may have been inspired by the ballet Calpelia where its dancers would also have these striking red and white costumes.
Carmela's hair is designed to parallel her legs, both having cross ribbons and having similar proportions of starting wider and then tapering into points. In the pilot, she was depicted as just having horns outright, but now it's just hair that looks like horns. If I had to guess why they changed this, it's because this would have made her look more distinct than just the horn sticking out. Why do you think no one cares about Clara and Odette? You didn't even realize I gave him the wrong names just now, did you? While we're here, Claire and Odette are both native Tchaikovsky characters. Clara from the Nutcracker and Odette from Swan Lake.
Zest. Zestio seems to take influence from spiders and vampires. The spider motif is obvious, but the vampire part is a bit more subtle with the bat wings collar and his cape resembling both a spiderweb and bat wings. Both of these themes are likely done to show him being this creepy spooky guy in a more traditional manner than the other characters. He also has yellow and red stripes across his body accentuating his all black attire. But these, especially in conjunction with black, are colors associated with danger and to keep away.
Should be noted that both spiders and bats are known for having terrible eyesight. Zest is a blind old man.
Mimsy. Flower girls are of course rebellious young women who push back against the law and voted. Their outfits aren't just fashion at the time. It was a statement. These women wanted to be liberated from difficult and tight corsets and hoops and went for a more casual and form-fitting outfit. These also go to show Mimsy's character as someone who would go to speak easys and freely intermingle with people of color.
The feather headpiece and her nose changing shape was because Mimsy was later modeled after a chicken, meaning she really is a big chicken. On that, the several eyes may be a hint towards her constant on the lookout for any dangers or alteratively constantly being judged. Baxter. One of the reasons Baxter was pushed out of the main cast was due to Serpentas taking over the role as a comedic mad genius. Likewise, similarities between them would be played out throughout season 2. So, instead of showing up in episode 3 like he was planned to, he wouldn't make his first appearance until season 2. As for why he's not an angler fish, there's not much info on that. However, Madrid has said that Baxer would have died on a sinking ship. Originally, it was a Titanic, but that's currently up in the air. She said she didn't want to include a real life events, but the show has Jack the Ripper and Robert Sinclair, so it seems she changed her mind at some point. In the original design and now, the blue tint could either represent the water, freezing death, or suffocation.
The angler fish change may be representative of his current role as a low-level bio engineer at Vox, a bright bottom feeder guppy. It also make a good parallel to Vox's shark motif. Finally, the light at the end of lore is known to only appear on female angler fish, not male ones. Good for him. Hi, Pooky.
Our cat is in here. What do you want?
He just walked out again. Door was kind of closed, so he immediately came back and so like but he saw there was nothing hidden so he just walked out.
Rosie Rosie and the cannibals as a whole have two main influences. Wendos and Hello Dolly. I feel that sentence explains Vizy Bob's thought process more than anything else. According to the commentary, Rosie is influenced on the character Dolly Levi as a woman who had all the answers. She's kind of a Dolly Levi type character where she just has the answers for everything and can help everyone uh and is very very fun, very stylish.
>> And that Campbell Town as a whole was based off of musicals early 1900s towns and even Disneyland.
>> Yeah. So, Cannibal Town is obviously inspired by like, you know, the early 1900s. Um very Hello Dolly, Hello, like, you know, um it's also like Main Street Disneyland.
um just which is meant to be an idealic version of a 1900s early 1900s uh town.
>> Cool.
[ __ ] does that have to do with the cannibals though? Well, nothing. That's a joke. The justosition between the sweet and cheerful Disney musical Paradise and the ultimate taboo of cannibalism.
>> They like to sing and they like to dance and they like to be very very adorable.
Um but they're all cannibals and everyone's really cheery but they're like, you know, the most depraved >> like eerily cheery. Yeah, >> which when you think about it is just a show in microcosm. It also does make sense in a weird way. There's quite a few examples of these nice, hospitable, and polite people in fiction that end up secretly being cannibals, but since they're in hell, there's no reason to keep it a secret. It's an interesting take on the trope. Like I said, with voodoo, the window's influence is a mix of stereotypes and a more faithful interpretation. Alzer takes more from pop culture depictions of deer-headed men. In the original tales of the alongan folklore, they were these cannibalistic pale humanlike creatures with sunken in eyes. The game Until Dawn probably has the most accurate depiction I've seen. But as you can guess, the cannibals in the show are pretty close, too. While on Rosie, I want to go over something that I think people may have missed. Tons of people started speculating that Rosie, given that she could give Alistister power to be the strongest sinner, couldn't be a sinner herself. even pointing to her blush as a sign of being related to the morning stars in some way, which come on, that's pretty weak connection. Why would we just say Nifty is a morning star? Nifty is secretly Eve. Also, it'd be kind of weird for her to be an overlord since it seems to be comprised of only sinners.
Here's my interpretation. She made a deal with Lilith to use her power and then transfer that over to Alistar. In the opening narration, Lilith was described of empowering Deankind with her voice.
>> Empowering Deankind with her voice and her songs. And as the numbers of hell grew, so did its power.
>> Then revealed that she and Alistar were gone the same number of years. Alistar's disappearance at Rosy's request. Lilith has yet to say a single word in the series so far and never responds to her family until the last second of season 2. Alistar gains more power by adding voices of fallen overlords to his broadcast, i.e. he amplifies other demons voices. As seen when Fox and radio killed the video star and a curtain call, his power is tied to his popularity. His power is tied to the voices of sinners. as well. Charlie saying he's the strongest doesn't break Alistar's deal. Vox's approval rating being 100% does. And Vox says that Lilith could be the strongest sinner.
>> And I'm the most powerful sinner in hell, not Lilith.
>> Then you get the frequent use of songs, many of which are done to either illustrate power or to connect with others in some way. There's a frequent theme of importance of letting your voice be heard, how things go wrong when they get ignored, or the wrong voice being heard.
>> Elves finally listening to you. Others say that the power is tied to your voice in the show, especially for Lilith. So much of the show's focus is on power plays and willingly handing your power to another. And Rosie knew that Charlie singing would empower her people because Lilith has done the same before with her song. So my theory is that Rosie made a deal with Lilith to use the power of her voice for her own wants. Then she granted that to Alistar and he had to go into hiding when Lilith left due to him not having the strength anymore because Lilith lost her voice. Now why he's returned well before Lilith, who knows?
Apologies for the detour, but I knew I would never get a chance to talk about this again. And if I'm wrong, no, I wasn't. That's three times now.
>> Stop it. [music] Get some help.
>> The angels, the higher ranked angels tend to be based off flora and fauna found in the known universe, such as these background angels that look similar to plants, bugs, the night sky, and so on. Given that in Christianity, humanity was made in God's image, it makes sense to suggest that the rest of the known life and nature will be based on other angelic or demonic entities.
Sarah and Emily's blue and white color scheme seem to be inspired by a blue sky with white clouds. And of course, based off of birds, Sarah's theme being more direct than Emily's. Given that Emily turns blinding white in her angelic form and association with Christianity, one can assume she takes influence from a dove. Outfit wise, Emily is given a princess-like dress with short poofy sleeves. Since Emily is meant to be a counterpart to Charlie, she's also reminiscent of Disney princesses and is even technically a voice by one. Other ways that she's a parallel to Charlie is that while Charlie has more sharp edges and her hair is put in a braid, Emily is much softer and lets her hair down.
Frequently used symbols you'll see in heaven are the sun, wings, and diamonds.
The reason behind the wing motifs is obvious, but the sun and diamonds have a bit more to them. Diamonds are used both to resemble an eye shape and likely due to it association with royalty. In many cultures, the sun is depicted as the bringer of life, and many gods are meant to embody it. Since the speaker is the closest thing to God in the show, she seems to have taken the most influence from this. And finally, the speaker has these series of scrolls in her dress as a way to show how wise she is. The V box takes quite a few bits from his real life form from the square glasses to his square jaw and eventually his square TV.
This along with the fact that he came from the 50s indicates that he is just a huge square. His secondary influences in aquatic animals, in particular sharks.
We see this in his human form with his label pen going from a small fish to a boat to a shark fin. Wanted to be at the top of the food chain and instead of getting there by work, he just went and murdered instead. The same way that a shark is a predator to a small fry.
Other small details is that his hair flip resembles a shark fin and his sparkly suit resembling shark tails.
Valentino's influences comes from pimps and moths. I already went over the moth association and like what do you want me to say about pimp outfit? Ques like this are hard for me because I feel like I'm just being Captain Obvious out here.
Here's a moth pimp. He's based off moths and pimps. Did you get that? One last interesting thing with his design is that his teeth are decidedly pink. At one point, we can see him biting Angel's neck with Angel possibly enjoying it.
One can attribute that to a way of using love potion on someone or just a side effect of that being his saliva. I think the show taking the metaphor of toxic relationships are like a drug and pushing it to nth degree is really interesting. Abusers are not horrible to the victims 100% of the time and that back and forth can [ __ ] with your head even more. Showing Angel occasionally enjoying his abusive relationship, love potion, or otherwise is a very honest depiction you don't see often. Much like how drugs [ __ ] with you, going from highs to bitter lows and horribly screws your perception, >> but you know how crazy you make me, >> YOU [ __ ] [ __ ] HEY, Angie about earlier.
>> Kill your whole [ __ ] family.
>> Works really stressful.
>> Lastly, we have Velvet, whose main features are built around fashion dolls, social media, and witches. All of which are pretty obvious and make sense for a character, so I won't go more into it.
This is a side note, but I love the fact that her witch's broom looks like a makeup brush. That's really clever. The main difference in development from pilot to show was that she seemingly had this more manic personality and Lolita fashion. If I can assume why they nixed that for a more arrogant and business savvy one, it's likely because we already had Nifty for the manic girl in the cast. And you only really need one Nifty.
>> Nifty, STOP.
>> Bible characters. Abel's a character from Christian mythology, the story of Cain and Abel, the first two sons of Adam. Cain was a farmer and Abel was a shepherd who wanted to appease God. God liked Abel's meat sacrifice, but not Cain's plant sacrifice. So Cain was like, "Oh, I'll give you a [ __ ] meat sacrifice." And hit Abel with a rock.
God went, "No, no, bad Cain." And made him a hobo. His death by bonk was carried over into the show with his halo being dented. His sher background is also present in his Exorcist helmet as its horns are modeled after a ram. Abel is drawn with bags under his eyes due to how Renaissance paintings would draw their subjects with a sleepy look to them. You also take this to mean that he's just tired all the time. [ __ ] same, my dude. Whereas his father, Adam, was given a rockstar attitude, Abel's design takes more of the marching band uniforms. Care designer Donna Zemit said that the marching band element was meant to both contrast his father's bravado while also having connection to him. So, while Adam leaned towards varsity jock, Abel leaned towards band geek. Speaking of which, Adam. Adam is another figure from Christian mythology, mainly from the story of Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve, and sometimes told with Lilith, is a story of the first two humans to exist.
They reside in a paradise called the Garden of Eden, living in blissful ignorance. One day, Lucifer disguised himself as a snake, offered Eve a fruit from the tree of knowledge. In the original tale, Adam and Eve both ate the fruit with Eve going first and then convincing Adam. In the show, Charlie just says that Eve ate the apple, so it's a little ambiguous that Adam did as well. here. After consuming the fruit, Adam and Eve realized they were naked and made fig leaf clothing. The fig leaf would come back in Adam's finale robe at crotch level, as is sometimes depicted in art. In the pilot and leak pitch bible for the series, Adam was depicted with a more fluffy and feathery appearance. According to the commentary, he was also originally going to be a more serious and nasty character, given he's the embodiment of toxic masculinity.
>> Originally, I kind of was writing him a little bit too real or like he was kind of a little bit meaner. And then, you know, because he's he's meant to be just like the worst kind of guy ever. He's meant to embody toxic masculinity in a fun way. And so, it was challenging to write that.
>> A24 suggested that he'd lean into a rock and roll personality instead. And the crew thought that was more fun.
>> It was it was the suggestion of A24 that he be a little bit more of like a rock star. They were like, can he be like a little bit more of like a rockstar?
Because a rockstar like edgy kind of like cool guy. It It really locked in. I was like, "Oh, this is so much more fun and his toxic side is a little bit easier to make comedic."
>> Likewise, he was given a guitar to rock out on comprised of two harps, an instrument associated with angels. Like I said, Adam lean to this jock type personality. It's subtle, but the symbol on his chest is meant to allude to a varsity jacket as it's meant to be an A with a cross put through it. I'm I'm going to be real. I didn't get that. I thought it was meant to be like a gate or something that is the gatekeeper of heaven. It would have fit. Despite being a neo baby, Adam has some punk rock elements to him. The spikes on his collar and his helmet resembling goat horns. The goat thing was likely done as a twisted mockery of Lucifer as demons are typically associated with goats. He wants to be edgy and rebellious while sitting on his golden throne taking orders from daddy. This [ __ ] is such a poser. I'm glad he's dead.
Lucifer. Lucifer in the Bible is roughly the same as betrayal on the show. Kind of. The thing is that the devil goes under a lot of different names in different interpretations. Many of the deadly sins are often conflated with the devil, but obviously these shows have them separated. However, the actual character of Lucifer is pretty close being an angel that likened himself to God and in some interpretations tempted Adam and Eve with a forbidden fruit.
Typically, the fruit is portrayed as an apple in Western circles similar to Greek mythologies apple of discord, but it doesn't have to be an apple. It can just as easily be a banana and no one ever thinks that. What if Lucifer just came over and was like, "Hey, Eve, you want my [ __ ] kumquat?" Like every VOP character, there's several different themes that go into a design. Lucifer is based off of apples and snakes for obvious reasons, but also ducks and a circus ring leader. The apple theme comes through in many ways, like how his coat has a similar build and color scheme of an apple core. I've also seen speculation that him and Charlie are both given these rosy cheeks due to them sometimes being called apple cheeks. The snake theme pretty much only shows up on his hat and nothing else, unless you count your thing. Even that wasn't thought of initially as in the pilot it was just a worm. Honestly, missed opportunity to make the staff a snake or a tree or something. That would have been cool. The duck theme is very interesting because of all the elements of his character, it's the most inexplicable. While heaven has bird themes with their higher-ups, and Madran said Lucifer created the arcatisha, none of them decidedly have a duck theme.
Gosh is the speaker of God being yellow and you could interpret him as missing heaven's light. Personally, the reason I think he has a duck theme is to have similarities to the ugly duckling. The Ugly Duckling is a fairy tale about a little fledgling that gets bullied by his duck siblings. Eventually, he's pushed out of the family and struggles to find a home and friends until a farmer takes care of him. At the end of the story, it's revealed he looks different because he was actually swan, not a duck, and flies off with other swans. With a story like that, there's already several different ways you can see how it would apply to Lucifer and even has been as a show. Not fitting in because he's too different, getting help from outside source to live, finding people who he does belong with, and so on. The circus ringler element was inspired by the movie The Greatest Showman. And it's interesting reimagining of PT Barnum as a dreamer similar to Lucifer's character. The circus motif may have also been a holdover from Allison and Wonderland as the structure was adapted into the Seven Deadly Sins. Lilith, despite what some people may think, Lilith was not actually creation of the show. She originates from Jewish mythology after some rabbis wanted to fix a plot hole in the Bible. Not a joke. So, they created Lilith, a woman that was also made the same time as Adam. However, they were both tops and Lilith decided it would be better to be a demon than a bottom.
Also, not a joke.
>> Good for her.
>> This is what happens when you're a selfish lover, guys. You cause the downfall of humanity. Lilith was incorporated into the show due to Madonna wanting to depict Christianity through a female perspective. Here are challenges that misogynistic teachings that Christianity can have, especially within an iconic story like this. Lilith eventually got with the archangel Sam.
Sam in some tellings is actually the serpent that tempted Adam and Eve, though it is not the devil or even a fallen angel either. However, it seems the show decided to just combine the character with Lucifer to streamline the story, which is for the best. You know, there's something interesting about finding an artist's old stuff on the internet. Back when they were far more amateur-ish and seeing how it's changed.
Many times after a project comes out, the artist will post a concept art they've made over the course of a few years. But it somehow doesn't hit as hard as scavenging around on the internet and finding old ass posts from 2011. I've seen tons of people criticize major designs for not clearly conveying what the characters are meant to be.
Hell, I made the same points, too. But I've seen those people say characters shouldn't be designed like this or it's bad character design where it's incredibly self-indulgent. It just looks whatever the creator thinks is cool. And I do get that. But have you considered that having that mindset is [ __ ] miserable that you end up severely limiting your creativity for no reason?
that if you're too concerned with it, it stops being fun, which the entire goddamn point of making things. Some of the most iconic character designs have [ __ ] all to do with their actual characterization or role or what they're meant to represent. What does Mickey Mouse's character have anything to do with him being a mouse? Does Mario's design have literally anything to do with saving a princess from a dragon?
Does Superman look like an alien with the ability to fly and have laser vision? Does Glamark Freddy look like he's gay? No. Okay, maybe that last one, but you get my point. I start the video bringing up Banana spelled has been with a Z because she wanted to give middle school. And you can mock that all you want, but god damn if I don't find it inspirational. Art is meant to be fun.
Her art style is fun. Her designs are fun. Being pure 2014 Tumblr cringe is still into a can is fun. I think a lot of people kind of just brush off design analysis if it's seemingly just for aesthetic. In my experience with character design, it's more complicated than that. I think when you decide to add an aesthetic to a specific character, it likely has a deeper connection in your subconscious. A character of mine, Draana, who was meant to be the embodiment of a moral compass, albeit skewed, originally looked like this. For a while, I was trying to figure out why I associated a Slender Man type of character with morality of all things. Design and concept came first, and I had to reverse engineer the thought process to figure that out. And I think it was for two reasons. One, the character has an old school rigid view of morality, which fits into the black and white aesthetic of Slender Man. Two, in the original Photoshop, Slender Man just kind of in the background, barely noticeable, and blends into the trees.
And I end up associating that with the feeling of wanting to be seen, but is often ignored like this character would have been. I changed her to what she is now, a seed dragon lawyer, because quite frankly, I didn't want Slender Man comparisons for the rest of my life.
I'll stick to puppy playtime ones, I guess. The point is, I think the designs go a lot deeper than people give credit for. And that goes for anyone watching this that wants to make characters.
Maybe that character you made in like 5 seconds and had more fun with is actually more meaningful than the thoughtout character. If there's a thesis to this little history lesson, it's that have fun with your characters.
Draw them a million times and recycle them later. Clearly, it worked out for Vizzy Pop. Thank you for watching. If there's any topic you want me to cover on with any animation, uh, has been or otherwise, let me know. I might just do it. Also, please like, comment, subscribe. I'd love to hit 50K subs by the end of the year. That's all for now.
Now, get the [ __ ] out.
