10 Species Live Here and Nowhere Else on Earth

[00:00:00]The dunes aren't just a geological feature. They're an island, an isolated ecosystem that's been cut off long enough for species to evolve here and nowhere else.

[00:00:11]At least 10 insect species are endemic to Kelso dunes. The keelso giant sand treader cricket, the keelso Jerusalem cricket, a rare midas fly, a shield back kadid. These creatures exist only here on these 45 square miles of sand.

[00:00:30]The most famous resident is the Mojave fringe toad lizard, a reptile so adapted to sand that it can literally swim through it. When threatened, it dives below the surface and disappears.

[00:00:44]These animals survive here because the dunes create microclimates that don't exist in the surrounding desert. Buried sand stays cool even in the summer.

[00:00:52]Moisture collects in the valleys between dune crests. It's harsh but survivable if you've had thousands of years to adapt.
