In direct percussion flaking, the stone worker applies controlled pressure with a hammerstone to detach flakes from the stone surface, with the technique requiring careful attention to seams, pressure application, and flake direction to achieve desired tool shapes; the process involves working edges, creating bevels, and managing areas where flakes tend to dive in, demonstrating that successful flaking depends on understanding the stone's natural characteristics and applying appropriate force to control flake travel.

But how y'all? This is Stone Hook in Orange, Texas. This is Monday night.
Had a big old piece of obsidian that Tom Brown give me at the nibless bluff nap in. I put it in the saw.
I cut the butt cut off of it.
Then I took the next slab about a/ inch thick I think.
I cut it in two pieces.
That's what I'm bit of a city. I'm going to use an inch and a half weightless bumper.
And let's see.
I don't know what to expect of all that right there, but I like a preform about that big. Two and a quarter inches by five and five and a half to the ears.
That's probably getting pretty ambitious.
I'm going to start out by working these edges over there closer to this side and shape. One side's working better than the other.
I may adjust.
I see that's a seam right there.
I'm going just start out by getting me some bevel that I can I ain't going to try to drive them too long yet, but I do want them to come out. I don't want to be too steep.
And this side's flat and good. So really, if I can get the flake to travel more on this side, I'm way better off.
And that seam going right down in there.
Heat.
Heat.
got three.
keep digging in right there.
That little pressure I think causing that climbed that one right there. It broke off.
I have no made it across it that time, but man, that's so thin.
Darn it. Didn't dig in again.
I'm about working on this thing.
I got still some thickness right there up close to that edge.
Other than that, looks pretty good, I guess, except for where them flakes.
Just kept diving right through there.
That one still dove in.
Yeah, I need to get Let's see where that go. Right there. There. I need to get that hump off right there.
That's all I can do with it. Shoot.
It was fun as heck though. This stuff flakes really, really good. I think just to be in this butt cut though. That's one side there. See this side got a nice convex contour to it. But this side kept diving in the middle.
See some more mass right there.
That's all I can do. Heck, I keep sitting on this thing all night. It's so fun.
But I didn't talk much because I just in a panic the whole time after they started diving and stuff. But I got these other two pieces here. I'll come back to work next.
I'll be back.
