[00:00:19]Would you go inside? Hey [music] guys, today we are breaking down Damien McCarthy's new horror masterpiece, Hocus Pocus. Following up on his incredible 2024 film Oddity, this is already being called the scariest movie of the year.

[00:00:30]In this video, I'm not just going to give you a recap. I'm going to completely unpack that mind-bending ending. We're going to figure out who the donkey man really was, what was real versus what was just a hallucination, and the true hidden meaning behind the conquistador story. Drop a like on the video and let's dive right into solving this mystery. The movie kicks off by introducing us to Imbolc, [music] an author who drinks way too much and is deeply haunted by his past. When he was a kid, he was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in his mother's death. Crushed by the weight of the guilt, Im brings his parents' ashes to the exact hotel in Ireland where they spent their honeymoon. His dark plan [music] to come here and end his own life. But his life is saved by Fiona, a woman who works at the hotel. When Im finally wakes up, he discovers that Fiona has gone missing. The hotel security guard, [music] Mal, claims she just packed up and left. But Im isn't buying it. Then, a local guy named Jerry, who has a habit of taking magic mushrooms, tells Im that he actually saw Fiona's ghost pointing directly at the locked honeymoon suite. Searching for Fiona, Im manages to break into the locked suite. Inside, he finds a dumbwaiter that leads straight down into the basement. And guys, when that small lift comes up, [music] Fiona's dead body is inside. Here is the dark truth. Mal and Fiona were having an affair. [music] Fiona got pregnant, and to save his marriage, Mal drugged her, shoved her into the dumbwaiter, and sent her down to die. After [music] respectfully pulling Fiona's body out, Im climbs into the lift himself and heads down into the basement. Down [music] there, he comes face-to-face with the very real, absolutely terrifying witch. She is [music] seconds away from catching him when M manages to draw a protection circle on the ground using chalk. In the chaotic climax, the hotel catches fire, Mal is dragged straight down into the underworld by the [music] witch and her monsters, and M somehow manages to escape with his life. But, here is where the ultimate [music] twist drop. While recovering in the hospital, the hotel bellboy, Albie, visits M and confesses a dark secret. [music] He admits that he spiked M's liquor flask with Jerry's magic mushrooms as revenge because M was acting like a jerk to him earlier. So, now we have the biggest question of the movie. Was the witch, the haunted suite, and the donkey man all just one massive hallucination? The director actually hid the answer in a brilliant visual detail.

[00:02:39]Remember what Jerry said earlier in the film, "Goats climb on top of cars so they can look at their own reflections after eating the mushrooms." That right there is the rule for the entire movie.

[00:02:49]M wears glasses. If you pay close attention, when the creepy donkey man appears on TV, all you see reflected in M's glasses is TV static. That means the donkey man and the TV show were entirely a figment of his imagination. That specific show was playing on the day of his mother's fatal accident, so his guilt was just manifesting it. However, when he looks at the witch in the basement, you can see her clear, perfect reflection in M's glasses. That means the witch, Mal murdering Fiona, and that horrifying basement, all of it was 100% real. Now, let's talk about the deep, philosophical ending. Throughout the film, M is writing a book featuring a conquistador and a young boy lost in the desert. A treasure map is stuck inside a glass bottle and the conquistador is about to smash the bottle over the boy's head to get it. This story is actually a direct metaphor for M's own life. The conquistador represents M's father and the boy is M himself. The bottle represents alcoholism. After M's mother died, his father turned into a literal monster and drank himself to death, eventually passing that exact same disease down to him. Originally, M's draft had a super bleak ending where everyone basically dies purely because M was so consumed by his own guilt. But after fighting for Fiona's justice and surviving his own brush with death, M is a changed man. At the end of the film, he types out a brand new epilogue. This time, the conquistador hands the bottle to the boy and offers his own head instead. But the boy throws the bottle away and the two of them hug and cry together. This beautifully illustrates that M has finally forgiven himself. He has broken the cycle of his past trauma and his alcoholism. That ram skull lying in the sand, that's a universal symbol of hope. M is no longer haunted. At its core, Hokum is a story about how men carry the heavy burden of guilt and past mistakes.
