Xpeng’s success in Beijing shows that diverse, complex urban data is rapidly closing the gap with Tesla's vision-only system. This comparison highlights that the future of autonomous driving depends more on the quality of training environments than on hardware alone.

Is China’s New Autopilot Actually Better Than Tesla?Added:
They have robots. They have flying cars.
And this company, Xping, promised me that their full self-driving is better than a Tesla. And I would consider myself somewhat of an expert when it comes to Tesla self-driving. Just this year in 2026, in my Cybertruck, out of 11,000 mi driven, this full self-driving has driven 79% of that, 8,842 mi. And across the entire fleet of Teslas around the world, there have been 10 billion miles driven just with self-driving. So, I thought I'd check for myself. and come all the way to here to China to see if it's actually true. This is the car that I'm going to be testing, the Xping P7.
It looks amazing. It's got this spoiler on the back. It looks like a sports car, but whenever you see these lights right here that are kind of turquoise looking, that's how you know that this thing is in fully autonomous mode. We're in China right now. I want to see the craziest roads that you can possibly see. People everywhere, scooters. So, that's what we're doing. And I got somebody that's going to help me. We got Zatong from China. But listen to his English. Listen to this guy's English. Hello everybody.
>> That is not AI. How do you have such a good English accent?
>> Let's see. I learned it myself basically. I did went to Canada for college, but my English is pretty much like this before I went there. Uh oh, by the way, I was born in Dubai.
>> All right, so here's the plan, everybody. We are going to pull into the main road here. It's madness. Bikes, cars, people. I don't even think I'm in the right lane right now. How do we start it? Right here. Push the button.
>> Double tap drive. Just like a Tesla.
>> We are in VLA 2.0 right now. Autonomous driving. Driving on one of the craziest roads in all of Beijing. There are obstacles everywhere that you just can't account for. Maybe a dog comes across the road. Maybe there's going to be an older lady, which I just saw earlier, walking down the middle of the street.
There's about 50 billion scooters. I would say 90% of the scooters in the entire world are in this city right now and everybody seems to have brought it out. It is the weekend. How good or how bad is this going to be? How many times in 30 minutes am I going to have to take over? This is still a level two system, which means I'm in charge. The challenge is for today, for each time that you have to take over, I'm going to have to take a sip of that m bean juice. For the record, this is not a fruit drink. This is a 300-year-old traditional Beijing drink, which is a fermented m bean juice called doer. For the Chinese viewers out there, you definitely know that it's uh some people like it.
>> Where is the drink?
>> The staff is buying it right now. So, do not take over until you think it is absolutely necessary. Here's another thing that I want to tell tell you about this car. They have what they call a co-pilot mode, a co-driving mode, and that is pretty different than the Tesla.
In a Tesla's FSD, when you take over, the system just drops out. This actually allows you to co-pilot. So, if you force the wheel, it's not going to drop out of the system. But the second you let go of the wheel again, it'll take over again.
So, you don't have to reactivate.
>> Okay, this is interesting. We got to turn right. And there's, I don't know, 100 bikes and scooters. The bus just tapped that scooter, the back of it.
Okay, when the light's red, we can turn right.
>> Oh, that was so close.
>> Very close. Very close, >> but very safe.
>> There we go.
>> Let's make a deal.
>> Mhm.
>> Every time I take over, you have to drink this nasty drink.
>> Okay. Yes.
>> If I make it the entire way >> without taking over, >> will you buy me an ice cream cone?
>> Of course. cuz I saw I've driven so many miles, like literally hundreds of thousands of miles in autonomous driving back in America that I've become really comfortable and natural with driving it.
There's some people that have never done this before. If they were doing this for the first time, they might have taken over back there at that turn. It was a little sketch.
>> Very close. Very close.
>> Look at this guy. You going to go a little just walking. This is what I meant by uh >> There's some older lady. There's some people right here.
>> Hey, it did good. I I was ready to take over, >> but handled it like a pro.
>> Handled it good.
>> I want my ice cream. You better watch out, people. All right. I hear some people crosswalk. Oh, and this car.
>> And there's a car doing it.
>> Yep. I'm not taking over.
>> You didn't?
>> No. I'm not touching it.
>> Good.
>> If it hits it, it hits it. I'm not taking over unless it's kids. I want my ice cream. A lot going on right now.
People, watch out. We're coming.
>> Two people on the side. Scooters, bikes.
>> Here we go. We are about to go a little faster. We've got a weird intersection here. Looks like we're going down the wrong one. This van. Watch out, buddy.
We're coming.
>> Here we go. See?
>> Oh, yeah. We navigated that great. That road was a lot of stoppage time, but when we were moving, there were a lot of variables. You have to remember there's just some cameras and a chip inside of the car that's analyzing everything that's going on. As humans, we're watching and we see like one thing, but maybe something's going on over here that we don't see because we've got two eyes and we only look in one direction.
Look at this guy. We got this guy coming. It's looking at everything right now as we drive around and adjusting in a natural way. Early on when autonomous driving was going, things would be really abrupt like it would just tell me to touch the wheel. I touch the wheel.
>> Touch the wheel. Yeah.
>> What it says was the uh co- driver the co-pilot >> co driving.
>> Yeah, cuz I pulled on it a little too hard, I think, and it started going toward that car.
>> So, that was you driving. I would count that as you taking over, >> I guess. So, >> I'm not counting that as you take over.
>> You just said you're counting.
>> No, I'm not counting that as you >> I think we have verification. Roll back the tape.
>> I would count that as you taking over.
>> Well, count it. It is the wimpiest takeover ever, but I did take over. Look at this lady. I told you there'd be ladies in the road.
>> Oh, she was she was disappointed. She was really disappointed that we kept going.
>> You have to watch out for those. See people just running across the street.
This car is using vision based autonomous driving. So everything is just based on cameras like just like human eyes, right? What you see?
>> Yeah. No radar, no liar, no millimeter wave radar, no anything. Just pure cameras.
>> This guy is being polite. He's been waiting. Oh, now he's not. Oh, >> okay.
hesitant. Okay, >> he waited for everybody to go. I liked right now that we stopped before the crosswalk.
>> Yeah, >> that is good.
>> Very complicated road again.
>> Oh. Oh, that girl said that car door.
Oh, look at this thing.
>> Did that No, >> no, no, it didn't hit us.
>> It sounded like it hit us, but it didn't. Keep going, buddy. Did it stop?
>> Why are we stopped?
>> I have no idea what now. I think you >> I think it might have hit us.
>> I think you have to >> I have to take over, everybody.
>> You have to take over now. Here we go.
I'm taking over. We driving. I think we need to roll back the tape, but I think that thing hit the front. It sounded like it hit us. Oh, look at this thing.
>> That one definitely counts as a takeover. That was a we stopped in the middle of the road and you're not moving anywhere. I didn't see any warnings on the screen that was like >> No, there was a message in the middle of the screen says please take over manually in Chinese.
>> Okay, my Chinese is not that great. Look at this turn. Oh, we just aggressive.
Hello.
Good job, car. That I would not have done this smooth.
>> Now we're into the area called the Guaden. Back in the Ming andQing dynasty. This is like the highest education institution here in in Beijing.
>> Okay, I'm almost taking over everybody.
There's people on the road. I don't know that a Tesla would navigate very well here.
>> See people just walking idly in the middle of the road.
>> I kind of want to honk at them, but that would count as a taking over.
>> Okay, this is a confusion temple.
>> This road is confusing. That's a very >> Not that kind of confusing. No, it's really confusing.
>> People are now just taking pictures in the middle of a row now.
>> Here we go.
>> It's doing a great job. The P7.
>> All right. Two thumbs up for the P7 on that one.
>> That's four thumbs up. Now, remember what we said a few minutes ago when it did well. What was the signal? Two thumbs up.
>> Look at the sign. Look at the store. Two thumbs up. That's what that place is called. Yishu. Yishu means two thumbs up in Chinese. Don't fact check me.
Yesterday, we did something really cool.
We went to the XPong booth and we were able to see some of the vehicles that they had there. But then CEO and I think one of the vice presidents came and they took us to the second level and had like this big interview thing and let people ask questions.
>> Our culture there that don't really think that >> now we're in this room waiting for the CEO of this company Xpang to come speak to us. And I think he's going to speak in Chinese cuz we have these. I did submit two questions to ask him. Here he comes. There's CEO and then here's his entourage right behind It's a lot of people. Entourage still coming. So, I'm going to sit down now.
>> One of the questions that somebody asked, this journalist from America um had a very good question. I don't remember exactly what it was, but it was along the lines of Tesla. He's he loves driving with Tesla full self-driving and he's a big fan of it. He hasn't seen anything close to it yet. And he said, "What do you think could potentially be better right now?" Look at this. Got girl on the bike.
>> Wow. That was a good move. and she just doesn't care.
>> So, the question was basically like where do you see that with this VA 2.0 that you have an advantage over Tesla moving forward into the future? And I thought they said something really interesting. The CEO said something to the effect of not quoting him exactly.
He spoke in Chinese and there's a translator. My Chinese is not that great. He said something like, "We feel like that we have an advantage to where we are testing this and we're gathering data in China and in Europe right now and gathering so much data in unique situations on tighter roads, with more variables, with bikes, with scooters that we don't see that type of stuff in America." The CEO didn't say, "Hey, we're better than Tesla." They didn't say they're worse than Tesla, but they did say if they had an advantage, it would be in the the data that they're gathering right now, putting that into their AI software and able to analyze it. So, when they do come to America, they're going to have some things that they need to learn about how the roads work in America. But, it is very valuable what they've learned from here in China and some of the other places.
So, now that I've been on this road for the last 30 minutes, I see it. This is very complicated. How generous are the people going to be here for us getting over? There's this truck right here and then there's this um really nice purple SUV and then there's a taxi behind that.
How are the taxi drivers very nice or are they like New York drivers where they're like I'm not letting you in. I need to get to where I'm going fast.
>> You'll find out.
>> Okay, we'll see.
>> I'm just going to put my faith into the system. Let us do a thing. Another round of >> Look at that move. It pulled up a little bit more. I think it sees the traffic was starting to move, so it moved a little bit to be like, "Hey man, I'm in here to cut in between."
>> I see it. Oh, he he's so nice. Thank you. I'm wave to him. Thank you. A that guy was nice. And even let our follow car in. What a guy. I feel like I am not verbalizing all of the unique things that the system is doing. It's doing a really good job. I have only realistically had to take over that one time when it just stopped in the middle of the road because I think our car got hit on the front.
These are a lot of scenarios that I don't know even if a Tesla would have done it. I really do feel like that there's a chance that we might have had to take over multiple times in a Tesla on that even with the latest version.
>> I think that's a solid solid validation from may I say a Tesla fan.
>> All right. And a Range Rover.
>> Yeah.
>> Look out Range Rover. We are coming in.
>> Coming in.
>> Here we go. And we're making another turn. Oh. Oh, we just got right in front of him and slowed him down. Look out biker.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, wow. Oh, we stopped in the road. I think I have to take over.
>> I think you have to because this is a very tough >> It wasn't tight.
>> We just stopped in the road. Oh, this is a oneway road and we're going the wrong way. That's why >> we're not I don't think we're >> I think so. Look at all the cars.
They're all parked that way. Maybe that's why the car didn't turn right because we are trying to take it down a road that we're not supposed to be going down. See, there's our follow car.
>> My ride is over. Three times I took over. Once was because I barely pulled the wheel just a little bit and it I was co-pilot. I didn't need to do that. just told me to touch the wheel. Touch the wheel.
>> The second time I think we got hit. I'm going to go look at it right now.
Somebody hit us. That made sense.
>> The third time we tried to turn right. I think it was a one-way road. It might not have been. I think I have to take over.
>> I think you have to because now it's time for us to switch. Now I'm going to go sit in that driver's seat.
>> Here's what we're looking at right here, guys. We got a little scratch right there. Little scratches over here. A little chip right here. We've got something, too. That's a thicker one.
That one feels a little more fresh right there. that. Yeah, there's some of it's rubbing off a little bit.
>> It's possible that that car hit us and that's why it took over. I think it's what happened.
>> And we're back. You're very tall. I'm going to need you to lift it up just a little bit more because you're too tall.
Now you can't you you can't see me. I can't see you.
>> No, I can't see it at all.
>> Yeah. So So the challenge now begins.
You have to guess if it's me driving it or if it's all the system.
>> That beep made me think that it's a system.
>> That's just a gear change, actually.
That noise that meant something.
>> There's a lot of noise and a lot of beeping going on.
>> I noticed these noises earlier. Now I'm confused. I don't want to get it wrong cuz I don't want to drink the nasty drink. We're driving so slow right now that I think you're driving cuz a car would drive better than this. It would drive faster.
>> Is that your final answer?
>> Final answer. Way too slow. Come on.
>> If it's me driving, do you know why I'm driving so slow? There was a middle school on the right hand side. We were in a school zone. Since you locked in your answer, I'm going to give you the actual answer.
>> I'm scared.
>> That was a car. Oh, that was one big sip for you.
>> Oh, yellow light.
>> Oh, yellow light. Yeah.
>> Do you think that was me or the car that break >> earlier? It went through all the yellow lights. Initially, I didn't want to say it out loud cuz I want to take another sip, but I was thinking that was you that stopped cuz earlier it went through all the yellow lights. So, was it you?
Did you help? Were you assisting that?
>> Final answer.
>> Yeah.
>> Locked in. Do you think that was me?
>> Yeah.
>> Wrong again. That was all the car.
>> I'm going to down this entire drink by the time we're driving. This is a setup.
>> Okay. And now I'm going to make a right turn. And you can probably feel, you can probably guess if this right.
>> I haven't made the turn yet.
>> You're driving though. That little move to the right was you, right?
>> I'm going to I'm going to wait till you give it a second thought. And you know, just >> Have you locked in your answer?
>> I always think it's him. I'm going to say you were driving. Final answer.
Locked in.
>> Locked in. Wrong again.
That's three big sips for you.
Oh, I'm really starting to love this car now and the system.
>> We're back into our parking lot where it all began.
>> How about when we entered the parking lot?
>> I think you let it drive the entire time.
>> Finally, you got it right.
>> Oh, that's cool. You talked to it and it to park and it >> The robot is so smart. Oh man, this is way too tight of a spot for auto parking.
>> I have 100% >> I'm not taking a drink on it, but I don't think it's going to make it. I think it's going to nudge the car.
>> Look at that. One try.
>> Wow, that is really good. Oh.
>> Oh, and they're leaving.
>> That is really good. That's impressive.
>> This is my penalty. All right. What's the plan here? What do we do?
>> Here's our punishment. You took over two times, so I have to take two sips.
>> I got three, but yeah, that's fine.
>> You got it wrong. You got it wrong three times. So Dan's going to drink three sips.
>> I'm smelling it.
>> It's not that bad.
>> No, the smell is a little better now. It did smell like sewage. Straight dirty diaper. But Cheers.
>> Cheers.
>> Let's do it.
>> Oh, sour.
>> It's sour, but it's not as bad as durian. I'm going for number two right now.
>> It's in there. I promise. It's not as bad as I thought. It's not that bad.
>> It's okay. It's it it's it's definitely sour and it definitely doesn't smell too good, but after that sourness, it's it's fine.
>> I was more scared than I should have been. Number three right here.
>> You know what? I'll I'll go with you.
>> Look at that. We did it. We did it.
Thank you to Xbong for uh bringing us here and letting us drink this terrible, awful juice that turns out to be not that bad. Not that bad.
>> Just like the roads of China are not that bad when the car is driving yourself. How about that? Well, how about
