A planet with a population of 1 trillion people requires comprehensive engineering solutions for food supply (2 billion metric tons daily), water distribution (100 trillion liters daily), atmospheric oxygen production, and waste management (500 billion kg daily), demonstrating that fictional world-building must account for the complete logistical infrastructure that supports civilization, not just visual aesthetics.

Coruscant Has More People Than Earth Has Ever Held. Here's What That BreaksAdded:
The current population of planet Earth is approximately 8 billion people. The total number of human beings who have ever lived, counting every person born in every prior generation back to the species divergence approximately 300,000 years ago, is approximately 117 billion, according to the population reference bureau's most recently published estimate.
The canonical population of Coruscant is approximately 1 trillion. That is more than 100 times the current population of Earth. More than eight times the total number of humans who have ever existed across the entire recorded history of our species. All of them living on a single ecummenopous tier urbanized sphere whose surface area is approximately the same as Earth's.
compress that population into Earth's land area and the result is roughly 7,000 people per square kilometer of the entire planetary surface. Every continent, every mountain range, every analog of what would otherwise be ocean.
For reference, the most densely populated city on Earth, Manila, according to the 2020 Philippine Statistics Authority Census, has a density of 73,920 people per square kilmter.
Corissant's average across an entire planet, including what would be uninhabitable Earth analoges, is less than 10% of Manila's density, sustained continuously everywhere.
That is what the prequel era worldbuilders built. What follows is an audit of how they built it and a prosecution of what happened when someone else inherited it. Approximately 1 trillion is the narrative baseline across multiple Legends era sources.
Michael Reeves used it in the 2001 novel Darth Maul Shadow Hunter. A character notes that the last census put the population of Coruscant at somewhere in the neighborhood of a trillion. The Wizards of the Coast 2003 role- playinging source book, Coruscant and the Core Worlds, puts the figure at two trillion. Star Wars Fate of the Jedi Apocalypse refers to Coruscant's trillion residents in 2012.
The figure ranges from approximately 1 trillion to two trillion across legend sources depending on era and source book. Disney's most recent primary canon source, the Acolyte Visual Guide, published in 2024, gives a specific census figure, 2 trillion 981 billion780 million permanent residents, measured at 132 BBY, approximately 2.98 trillion.
The official Star Wars datab bank on star wars.com does not include a population figure at all. The acolyte visual guide does just the number. No accompanying explanation of how the planet feeds, waters, or oxygenates anyone living there. Disney didn't retain the trillion scale figure. Disney inflated it by nearly threefold and stripped out the receipts. That is a more serious version of the same problem. The audience that shows up to watch this kind of analysis already knows the shape of it.
Corissance Impossible Engineering pulled 10,500 views at 2.6 times channel average.
Economics inside a Star Destroyer pulled 24,287 views at six times outlier. Both times the demand signal is identical. People who want to know what the number actually requires.
The comments on the fleet video ran to World War II historical analogies and geographic comparisons, not because the audience couldn't handle the abstraction, but because they refused to. Real world math applied to fictional scale. That is the register this video operates in. Six questions, six systems. Here is what the EU writer solved and what Disney forgot to ask.
Question one, food. One trillion sentient beings eating an average of 2 kg of food per day produces a total daily requirement of approximately 2 billion metric tons. Earth's annual global food production across all categories runs roughly 9 to 10 billion metric tons. Corissant needs Earth's entire annual food output roughly every 5 days. At the Disney cannon figure of 2.98 trillion residents, that ratio deteriorates by a factor of three. The EU era answer was a documented network of dedicated agricultural worlds. The Salitch Agricultural Corporation headquartered on the core world's agroorld, Salich controlled 18 agricultural planets, including Salich itself, Ruan, Ulant, and Brost. The planet Tanab, inner rim, abundant sunlight, mild climate, is specifically categorized as an aggra world in Legends sources. The Star Wars: The Old Republic hollowet entry for Coruscant states the dependency plainly.
Though the city world is without natural resources, it has long relied on member systems and allies to supply the raw goods for the population's growth and prosperity.
That line is in the official SW hollow net right now. One sentence, no supply chain, no named worlds, no routing infrastructure, no Disney era film, television episode, novel, or reference book depicts Coruscant's agricultural supply chain in operational terms.
Question two, water.
One trillion beings consuming 100 L per day. The UN's standard floor for domestic water access produces a total daily consumption of 100 trillion L 100 km every 24 hours. The EU era answer was a closed loop system built around the planet's polar ice caps. The only surface water visible on Coruscant with polar melt stations and planetwide pipe distribution rendering the water cycle as engineered infrastructure rather than natural hydrarology.
The melt stations, the distribution network, the engineering logic that makes 100 trillion L per day physically possible. None of that is rendered in any Disney era production. The EU writers built the plumbing behind them.
Question three, atmosphere.
An ecummenopoulos with no surface vegetation produces no biological oxygen.
Coruscant is by canonical description across legends and Disney era sources alike entirely encased in constructed surfaces. The Subtor Hollowet notes no natural resources. The Disney datab bank lists only artificial temperate climate.
EU Legends documentation addresses what it identifies as atmospheric reclamation systems, engineered solutions to a planet that can't photosynthesize its own air.
The West End Games Imperial source book, written by Greg Gordon and released in October 1989, is the foundational reference text that Star Wars EU authors were reportedly given as source material. Legends Canon treated Corissant atmospheric management as an active engineering problem requiring continuous maintenance. Disney Canon does not engage with the question at all.
Question four, waste.
1 trillion beings produce at minimum 500 billion kg of solid waste per day before accounting for industrial output or atmospheric CO2.
Approximately 50 times Earth's annual municipal solid waste generation every single day. Coruscant has 5,127 levels confirmed across Wikipedia's Legends Records and Wikipedia's Corissant entry. The Dark Horse Star Wars Republic series. 83 issues from December 1998 through February 2006 is the primary comic vehicle for prequel era Coruscant infrastructure in the EU.
And it reportedly rendered the lower levels not merely as poor housing, but as the planet's service substrate, maintenance corridors, processing zones, the accumulated mechanical and biological refues of civilization stacked above. The official Disney datab bank confirms the level numbering directly. Level 1,313 is named, it states, because it sits 1,313 levels from the planet's core. 5,000 floors of habitation above that point requires 5,000 floors of sanitation engineering beneath it. Legends built that infrastructure into the fiction.
Questions five and six move quickly. The essential atlas published August 18th, 2009 by Jason Fry and Daniel Wallace through Delray is the most comprehensive galaxy spanning cardographic and statistical document in EU canon.
Corissant's aerial skyane system is part of that documented infrastructure network. Disney era productions show the skylanes as visual texture in establishing shots of Coruscant under the New Republic. No operational detail beyond the image. Coruscant's 5,127 levels run from governmental elite at the top to criminal underworld at the bottom with level 1,313, 1,313 floors from the core, Disney cannon confirmed, sitting near the most lawless territory.
Michael Reeves Coruscant Knights trilogy, Jedi Twilight, June 2008.
Street of Shadows, 2008. Patterns of Force January 2009. All del Rey is the most sustained literary rendering of what vertical stratification means at human scale. Sector noir fiction in the lower levels where altitude determines economic destiny and the gap between governing towers and subsistence is measurable in hundreds of floors. That sociology is present in Clone Wars, in the acolyte, in the Mandalorian. It functions as atmosphere.
Reeves built it as a system. Disney's most recent canonical population figure for Coruscant is 2 trillion 981 billion780 million. The Acolyte Visual Guide published that number. One document, one statistic. No explanation of how any of it works. The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3, The Convert, is the first New Republic era Coruscant episode in live action. The city skyline is present. The political architecture of the New Republic is partially rendered. No food supply chain, no water infrastructure, no atmospheric engineering, no waste processing. The acolyte set approximately 100 years before the prequels filmed across eight episodes partly on Coruscant. The Jedi Temple, the Senate, establishing shots of the Spires. None of its episodes engaged with the planetary logistics of supporting its own canonical census figure. The series was cancelled after one season. There is one strong counterargument and it deserves acknowledgement. Andor. The series renders Corissant's institutional life with genuine forensic precision. The ISB board meetings, the budget hearings, the surveillance apparatus, the street level poverty of the capital. It's serious institutional world building.
But institutional world building isn't planetary logistics andor shows what happens in the offices.
It does not show where the food comes from.
The shape of Disney's failure isn't that they ignored Coruscant. They treated it as a set, a collection of visually coherent surfaces that produce drama when characters move through them. The EU writers treated Coruscant as a system, and the system had to be documented before it could be dramatized.
Salich A's 18 agorlds aren't interesting in themselves. They are interesting because they are what makes the spires possible. Without them, the census figure is a number on a page. The acolyte visual guide put the number on the page and stopped there. Pan down from the ecummenopous surface through the skylanes, past the senatorial towers, through the transition levels where infrastructure takes over from skyline down through 5,127 floors of civilization. Each one a different economic register. Each one dependent on systems that someone was willing to spend the unglamorous hours documenting. Where the food comes from, where the water goes, what holds the air in.
Corissant population 1 trillion. The math worked once, then the people who knew the math left the building. Disney kept the city.
They lost the planet. Subscribe if you want more analysis like
