Research from a Danish expedition team led by Klaus Thymann, founder of Project Pressure, reveals that the tropical glaciers on Puncak Jaya, Indonesia's highest peak, have lost approximately 97% of their ice cover between 1980 and 2024, with four of six original glaciers completely disappearing and the remaining two potentially vanishing before the end of this decade, representing the last tropical glacier in Southeast Asia and serving as a stark symbol of accelerating climate change.

Detik-detik Salju Abadi Papua Menghilang, Peneliti Denmark Ungkap Kondisi MengerikanAdded:
At Indonesia's highest peak, a natural heritage that has survived for thousands of years is now entering the final phase of its life. A team of researchers and environmental documentarians from Denmark has successfully recorded the latest conditions of the Eternal Snow or Tropical Glacier in Puncak Jaya, Papua. The documentation results show that the remaining ice shelf is now only a small fraction compared to several decades ago.
The expedition, led by the founder of the environmental organization Project Pressure Klaus, was carried out to document the current condition of the last tropical glacier in Southeast Asia.
Through aerial mapping using drones and photogrammetry technology, the research team produced a three-dimensional model showing the rapid ice retreat.
According to Klaus Timan, the disappearance of glaciers in Papua is no longer a question of whether it will happen or not, but rather just a matter of time. He assessed that the process was taking place much faster than many people had imagined.
New research published in the journal Cold Region Science and Technology shows that the Papua Glacier has lost about 97% of its ice cover between 1980 and 2024.
Of the six glaciers that once existed, four have disappeared completely.
Researchers estimate the last two remaining glaciers could disappear before the end of this decade. The head of the research team in the study, Franin Hematang from the University of Papua, explained that the glacier's shrinkage is taking place at an alarming rate.
He emphasized that the ice on Puncak Jaya is the only remaining tropical glacier in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
These findings reinforce a number of previous studies that have warned that Papua's eternal snows are on the verge of extinction due to rising global temperatures.
A study published in 2019 even stated that the disappearance of the last tropical glaciers in the Western Pacific region is only a matter of time if global warming trends continue.
Satellite data used by researchers shows that the surface area of ice continues to shrink year after year.
In fact, some studies estimate that the glacier area has decreased by more than 99% compared to conditions in the 19th century.
This phenomenon is not only an important note for the world of science. The disappearance of Papua's eternal snow is also a clear symbol of climate change currently underway in Indonesia.
If the researchers' predictions prove true, future generations will likely only be able to see Puncak Jaya's eternal snow through photos, recordings, videos, and research archives.
As tropical rains continue to pound the mountains of Papua, the last layer of ice that has adorned the archipelago's highest peaks for thousands of years is slowly disappearing. Leaving a trace that may one day only remain in history. Download Tribun X now presents local to Indonesia.
