Sarracenia (pitcher plants) require nutrient-free soil when planted in water features, as regular potting soil containing compost and nutrients will promote algae blooms; for non-submerged planting, mix 50/50 with peat moss to retain moisture, while water feature planting allows natural wicking for constant moisture.

These Pond Plants Eat Insects Instead of Fertilizer or CompostAdded:
All right, so what are we doing here?
Down in here at the bottom of our uh pondless we've got a uh heavy duty lily pot.
And we're actually going to plant a Sarracenia garden in there. So, we got a couple flats of Sarracenia. Pulled the gravel away. We're going to fill this with these bags of Aquascape aquatic soil. The important thing is you put soil in there that has no nutrients. So, if you just put regular potting soil in there or garden soil, they're all full of compost and nutrients. They'll gum up your water feature promoting an algae bloom.
And the Sarracenia prefer soil with zero nutrients. Now, if you're not planting it in where it's going to sit in water, you'd want to add some peat moss to it about 50/50 uh so that your uh they would retain the moisture cuz they like that constant moisture.
But, this we're going to be able to fill it up so the water level is just below the pot and it's always wicking onto the soil so they constantly have a source of moisture.
