INTERNATIONAL DT466 4X4 12 TON WRECKER MORE BAD NEWS!Added:
So, this starts part two of the 12tonon four-wheel drive wrecker build.
And we need to strip this total frame down and uh true form plans are changing.
So, we're going to take all of this suspension off.
Uh, in the last video, a couple guys had made mention about, hey, is that that ride height going to make any difference in the functionality of the wrecker bed and being able to hit the ground? Well, yes and no. That wrecker bed on that truck already, you can put it down and lift the back of the truck off the ground if you need to. So, we'll be okay there. But I would like to have an air ride suspension so that we can drop the airbags and get underneath something and then pick it back up and have a nice ride. So, we're going to be looking at an air ride. I'm not sure which one. And uh we may be changing a few other things.
It's uh it's just how it works.
Every single one of these.
Anybody who's done bud wheels before knows what I'm doing.
Look inside there. Every single lug nut.
still on it.
You know why? Cuz they're in and outer lug nuts and we hate them. So now we got to use that tool called a pork chop.
That'll hold this one. And then we'll turn the inner.
See how this one's ready to come off.
If you keep going with the studs, what will happen is it'll push them all in like it started to do with this one.
If you don't catch it in time, see what it does? You'll push a stud back in. See how these are still okay, but this one's pushed in. That's what happens if you back that out. It it has no choice because it's in inner and outer. So that other this wheel goes on. And then there's a lug nut that goes in this ball and seat. Holds that on. That goes onto there. When you put the other wheel on, you put the outer lug nut on it. It holds it tight. Well, those get so rusty, it starts to come loose, it wants to take that loose in between the two.
So, that inner and outer is sandwiched between that lug nut or that wheel. I got to get them off.
Hold this in and then we can we should soak these some more cuz they were pretty pretty tough.
It's better if you have an assistant that can go on the back side and hold that and then just run these the rest way.
>> I I mean I can. I just can't. There we go.
There you go. All that because nobody use never sees. And if all the outside ones come off, you know, the inside are not going to come off.
They are stuck. We'll hit them with PB Blaster. Hit them with that a little bit. Let it move enough to maybe work the blaster in behind the ball and see.
We'll see. We got them off. I leaned over here and found something a little interesting.
There's no way for me to show that really well in the camera. Some people will pick it up right there. But if you compare what I'm looking at on one side of the other, you'll see what I'm talking about.
Yeah. So, we need to take some stuff apart and get a look at it and see what's going on over here.
Right.
>> Do they know how much you've been struggling to get these off?
>> No.
>> Okay. Cuz I I haven't been in here the whole time.
These Ubolts look pretty new. They don't they don't look really rusty or anything, but the I don't know what that's called. The bracket at the bottom will not come off. He's tried everything, you know, air hammer and just different positions with the grade all up, you know, pushing down and this and that. Will not. So, we're just going to have to cut them. I hate to cuz they're in good shape, but I mean, what are you going to do? Spend all day and I got to by the >> And he's tired of hammering on it.
One more.
>> Okay, you got this one knocked off to the side and down here, but the plate still won't come off.
It's one of those days where you think that something's going to go quick and it don't.
I'm about out of oxygen. See how my ship keeps getting longer and longer. The blue.
>> Yeah.
>> Keep adding oxygen because I'm about out.
Heat up here.
Wow, that was pretty quick actually.
>> Quicker than a torch, I guess.
>> Yeah, it was Heat up here.
Heat up here.
taking these brackets off the bottom of the frame.
>> That's no longer a 3/4.
>> Uhoh.
>> Decided to identify as 18 mm.
Is there a reason we have them wrenches way over on there instead of in the box?
>> Um, ask yourself >> I didn't put them in there.
Okay, now we can get this out of here and we can start seeing just how bad the frame truly is.
>> I got it in my hand cuz you wanted it for up there, but you haven't used it yet.
>> Look at that. Look how bad it rusted away.
This is why this is exactly why we inspect before we build cuz of stuff like that. You just wait and see what that's going to turn into lady.
>> I mean cuz to me right now it don't look that bad if you chip that off, but it could be thinner than I think.
What do you think of it now?
Look how much is missing.
Well, it looked the frame looked good before.
>> Books are deceiving, aren't they?
>> They are.
We're taking the crossmember out.
See what this one looks like.
Yeah, just just as bad.
You see it's good there.
right there's junk. So clear up into here is no good. That's way too thin. I mean, my finger will almost go flat in there. It's almost like, you know, whatever. Just keep going. But you know where we're headed.
All right.
Not so much.
>> You want some?
Just wait.
Get these Let's just carry this mess.
Drag out that way.
>> Oh, okay. I thought you meant >> think I can pick that up.
>> Yeah.
Nice. This one's no good.
We're pumping the fuel out of the tank so we can take it off.
How much you think's left in there?
>> It's part of that strap with the tank.
>> Must be the strap cuz this tank is okay.
>> Take them apart and they're good.
must been replaced.
Okay, somehow I got to make this where I can get to the lines.
>> Easy.
Okay.
>> I know. I'm just going slow.
Let's get it out.
We're getting close. We almost have the double frame ready to come off. We had to take care of this. Double frame comes behind this leaf spring hanger on this side only, not on the other side. I mean, it's cut the same, but the leaf spring hanger doesn't come up that high.
The reason being is since it is four-wheel drive, this is a different hanger. It moves the leaf springs instead of being under the frame, it moves them on the outside because it needs to make clearance for that differential as you can see here. So, they move the leaf springs to the outside. So, we just have to pull it out from behind here. So, we loosened we loosened this up here, all these bolts, so that uh we can slide it back. We're not ready to slide it back yet. We got a couple things to take care of back here.
There's a couple bolts that they've torched off and um we're going to have to drive them out. And then we have the cab mount crossmember. We got one bolt here, one on the other side still holding it up. We got to get uh our jack stands underneath the cab to support it and then we can pull it out. But um the unfortunate thing is, you know, we got some rust repair to do here. It's funny cuz the rest of the cab is in better than average condition. I mean, this is probably a I would say a seven out of 10 in our area. The backside of the rockers look pretty good. Um, it's probably repairable, but uh I I don't know.
I'm not a body guy and nobody makes these rockers for these things, so I'd have to create my own. Not that I couldn't do it, but whatever. So, we got to get these out and then we'll support the transfer case, take the mounts out for it, and then we'll uh put some stands underneath that cab and pull that double frame off. That'll be next.
>> I know it's coming out more than long, but Shove it in.
>> I mean, they're trying, but had two before.
>> I don't think we need it. Do >> you get them?
Since it doesn't have the bottom flange, >> if you want side it is This is going to be loud that hammer.
So, things we need to change that we know about. One is this air tank. That's not going to be enough air capacity for a wrecker and pulling something with air. That is three separate tanks, but look how small each chamber is. You see the weld line here.
So, we got to do something with that.
Um, we're not going to use this tank because I want aluminum unless I'm at out of money at the end of the build and there's no room in the budget to get aluminum. Um, we're not using that.
We're not using this. We're not using that. So, okay, let's start getting crap out of here. My wife's got this all cleaned up now. I've been looking at this frame really really closely and man, it's just this is it's just too thin in too many places. I don't that's ready to break.
You know, this top rail is thin. There's problems on the inside. There's problems on that side. And this frame's actually bent.
I'm not talking about it leaning out like this. I'm talking about the fact it's got a sweep in it.
It goes like this.
I noticed it when I was taking the unbolting the suspension. I was paying attention to it. Um, but I just I can't I can't find a place that's good to splice in here that doesn't have a hole within like 4 in.
And I don't want to cut it and then weld it and then have a crack go from my weld to the to a bolt hole, you know? So, up in here is probably the closest, but even so, man, is there's just it's just not not ideal. I talked to a frame company about making me an outer double frame that would wrap the entire thing, the top flange, the side, and then the bottom flange. So, just another frame come up like this and up, you know, just like it was. But, uh, I just can't bring myself to do that on this old crummy frame. I was going to if I did it, I was going to run it all the way to the end, the very end of the truck, so it'd be plenty strong. But I mean, it just depends on what caliber of truck we want to build. I know what I want to build and uh that's a problem. That's a problem. That's a problem. That's a problem. So, I'm at a point where um I could I can go back if I could go back in time. When I first bought this, I told my wife I should just take the front axle, rear axle, transfer case, and controls out of this truck, make it a two- wheelel drive truck, and just sell the chipper truck as it was, just keep the four-wheel drive for me because that was the most attractive part of it.
And then I found out it was 250 horse motor, and it had a bunch of work done to it. Remand transmission, new clutch, new linkage, new starter, new rear center section. So, you know, then it became like, well, there's a lot of good parts here. This would be a great record. So, here we are. But now, depending on what decision I make next is the fact it goes from a 3-week build to a 3-month build. And if I run into anything else, we could, you know, good grief, it could be a year. And I I don't have time for that. I need this truck.
I've got a lot of stuff I need to do.
So, anyways, I got some decisions to make. I got some ideas, some things I'm working through to see if it if it's worthwhile to do. Um, leave in the comments what would you guys do. Thanks for watching. I hope you've enjoyed. Uh, we made some progress, but we got to keep going. It's not coming out of the shop until we're done. Uh, I may have to do something else out in the driveway, but it's staying right here until we are done and it's
