A Bloody Indie Darling | Excision (2012)

[00:00:00]If you can get John Waters to make a cameo in your movie, you know you have a weird one on your hands. I made a post earlier this week informing you beautiful people that we would be returning to our niche indie horror roots. And the movie for this week fits that profile perfectly. It's weird. It's bloody. And if you have any form of religious trauma, this might send you spiraling a little bit. Before we get into that, hello. My name is Kaye aka Shay aka Shake and Bake and welcome or welcome back to my channel and I still do not have a retwist. I'm irritated.

[00:01:04]Excision 2012 is a featurelength adaptation of the 2008 18minute short film of the same name. It is directed by Richard Bates Jr. The feature actually runs a little bit under 90 minutes, coming in at an hour and 21 minutes, which I understand low key. This movie is short and it packs a punch just how I like it. I remember speaking about this a little earlier in my like YouTube videos where I did talk about not necessarily liking super long run times, like an hour and 30 minutes. If you can get it done in an hour and 25, it probably will be one of my favorite movies. The story follows a surgery obsessed teen named Pauline who goes to extreme lengths to get approval from her parents. The short does a great job at capturing the odd nature of our main character, Pauline, and how her dreams and delusions compounded with her parents constant ridicule led her to make one last fatal attempt at garnering their approval. The feature takes those themes and expands upon them by adding a religious aspect to them that makes the final act of the movie seem all the more preventable in my opinion without spoiling too much. So, if you haven't watched this movie, I highly recommend it. trigger warning for blood and blood, vomit, like really gross, okay? Like it's a lot of gross stuff that happens in this movie. So, trigger warning for that. Also, if you have not seen it, I highly recommend you go watch it. It is now free on Tuby, if I'm not mistaken.

[00:02:29]It's pretty low budget, but it has some very interesting cameos throughout where I was like, why are you in this movie?

[00:02:36]But sure, I already spoiled one of them, which is John Waters. So, it's weird.

[00:02:40]It's a bit campy at points. I don't want to hold you guys too much longer. So, without further ado, let's get into the breakdown.

[00:02:46]>> Your girlfriend's friend thinks you're gay.

[00:02:48]>> The movie begins with one of Pauline's many blood soaked dream sequences where she is sitting across from a bloody clone of herself. Bloody Pauline is shaking and has blood pouring out of her mouth and regular Pauline is having a bit of a sensual response to this, if you get my drift. The clone spits out blood onto the regular Pauline and she wakes up from her dream. These dreams appear throughout the film periodically.

[00:03:17]They're all shot in these like different void like locations. So like you get one that's like in an all-white void. You get one that's in like this blue tiled bathroom. They're very artsy. You get some that's like pitch black dark void.

[00:03:29]They're artsy and weird and disjointed and they pop up randomly throughout the movie. So, I won't be talking about all of them, but I will point out the ones that are kind of important and kind of relate to everything that's going on.

[00:03:39]All of them relate, but I can't show them all because there's a lot of nudity. I won't be talking about every single one of them because it it will make you confused as to where we are in the movie and what's going on. Okay, so yes, like I said, they're all shot in this like void like locations and they get more and more weird and depraved as the movie moves along. Pauline is played by Anna Lin McCord, whose most notable role to me, the one when she's in Niptuk. I saw her in Niptuk when I was younger. Do I even remember what she was doing in that? No, I recognize her face from Niptuk. I never finished that show, but somebody let me know if it's even worth revisiting, no shade. Like Ryan Murphy has a million shows at this point. So, is Niptuck worth going back and watching? But anyway, something that I noticed about her filmography in a liord is like she has been typ cast a lot as like the blonde bombshell that has entered the villa. You know what I mean? So, for this, she was able to play a very weird character for once. And even though like they're still doing the like let's make this supermodel weird and ugly kind of thing going on with her, like you can still tell that she's like very pretty, but it's like they have to like put her in a bad wig, you know? But yeah, I just think she does a decent job here with how weird some of the antics that Pauline gets up to in this movie are. Like, she does a great job. So, that's I just wanted to praise the actress for her performance. They did use a different actress in the short. It's not the same woman. I prefer the first one. She's a little more angsty than Annaline, but yeah. Next, we are introduced to Pauline's family. Her little sister, Grace, is played by Modern Family's Ariel Winter. She is hooked up to a breathing machine because she has cystic fibrosis. And lastly, we meet her parents, Phyllis and Bob.

[00:05:17]Phyllis is scolding Bob like a child for peeing on the toilet seat, which I am not mad at, honestly. that would irritate the [ __ ] out of me too. But we will get into both of these parents cuz Phyllis sucks and so does Bob. They are all at the table eating breakfast together and we get a glimpse of the family's dynamic between her two kids.

[00:05:35]Phyllis has a clear favorite in Grace because Grace is like her miracle child whereas Pauline is like her problem child. So she's constantly scolding and degrading Pauline while praising Grace.

[00:05:48]That happens a lot throughout the movie.

[00:05:50]Bob the dad, he's just there. He's like a bad parent in the way that he's like super avoidant and doesn't really speak up or defend any of his kids. He just kind of lets Phyllis say and do whatever the hell she wants. So yeah, Phyllis goes Pauline for chewing with her mouth open, which is one of my biggest pet peeves, but Phyllis is super rude about it to Pauline. She's not particularly nice. So Pauline just gets up and leaves from the table and goes to school. In one of Pauline's classes, her teacher is played by Matthew Gay Goobler from Criminal Minds, which I'm like, okay. I didn't know that he was such a big like comedy actor. I didn't watch Criminal Minds, guys. I'm sorry. I was more of a Law and Order SVU person. I did not watch Criminal Minds, but I know that he's like a fan favorite. And in this movie, as the teacher, he is talking about sexually transmitted diseases. And so he asks the class if they have any questions and Pauline raises her hand and he is already reluctant to answer one of Pauline's questions. So Pauline raises her hands and asks if someone can catch an STD from sleeping with a dead person. So uh yeah, we're starting to see the type of individual Pauline is.

[00:07:04]He ignores that question for good reasons and moves on. Later on in the day, in the school day, we meet the mean girls, the bullies of the story, sitting on the bleachers and Pauline comes out to sit on the bleachers a little further away from them as well. And she overhears a conversation between the two girls where one of the girls is talking about how she was fooling around with her boyfriend who couldn't necessarily get things going, if you know what I mean, and how small his penis was.

[00:07:32]They're they're really flaming the why he's not there. The friend that she's talking to comments saying that maybe the boy is gay or in my opinion maybe he's just not into her, you know, he doesn't have to be gay, but sure. The boyfriend shows up while they're having this conversation and the girls try to act normal as if they weren't talking about anything. And Pauline does not play that fake [ __ ] at all. Like, not at all. So, she blurts out, >> "Your girlfriend's friend thinks you're gay.

[00:08:02]No, my bad. I'm sorry.

[00:08:04]>> I can't lie. Pauline is funny as [ __ ] Like, she's funny as for that and very, very real. On the way home, Pauline's mom does the absolute most. All the while playing some gospel music in the background. First, she gets mad at Pauline for not having her seatelt on, and the seat belt is kind of dinging off. So, she's like mad about that, and she stops in the middle of the street until Pauline puts her seatelt on, which is dangerous. I get it. is like you want her to be safe, but stopping in the middle of the street is just crazy.

[00:08:33]Luckily, the street is empty and it's residential cuz girl, what the hell?

[00:08:36]Then she asked Pauline about her day, and Pauline doesn't really want to talk about her day. So, to force Pauline to speak, she honks the horn until Pauline agrees to talk to her, which is a form of abuse. Like, this is a very abusive relationship. like you're actively antagonizing your daughter to make her talk to you and then you wonder why she has such an issue with you. Like it's so weird. She tells her about her day and we find out that that Phyllis and Pauline are on their way to an appointment, not to a doctor, but to a reverend at the church. Pauline voices that she is not happy about going to the reverend for this appointment. She says that she wants to go see a psychiatrist.

[00:09:16]So, this is one of the first times in the film where we see that Pauline is actively asking for professional help and her mother is denying her of that for reasons we'll get to in a little bit. But here is like the religious trauma aspect of the film that is introduced. Pauline knows that she has some sort of mental illnesses going on.

[00:09:36]and she knows that she has problems and she wants to fix them and she wants to get proper treatment for them or at least go to a psychiatrist to understand what why she's having the dreams that she's having, what she's feeling and why she, you know, has these outbursts and things like that. She wants to really understand herself and how to get better, but she wants to go to a medical professional, right? But her mother thinks that taking her to talk to the local reverend is the same as getting professional help. It's not. Her mom claims that she's not taking her to a psychiatrist because they don't have a lot of money. But I don't buy that because I truly think that if Grace were expressing the same concerns, she would do whatever it takes to make sure that Grace was okay. And I know that the American health care system is a piece of so I'm not necessarily saying that money isn't an issue. But what I am saying is that if this were Grace, she would have put way more effort into making sure that Grace got what she needed. But since it's Pauline, she's not willing to try as hard. She just thinks that Pauline is acting out and she's being a teenager, literally.

[00:10:32]Anyways, Pauline goes to the session and she knows that this session is a waste of time. So, when she meets with the Reverend who is played by the legendary creep master weird, the master of weird, all of these things, John Waters, if you are a horror fan or if you are a fan of weird things, you know who John Waters is. And she just goes to this little meeting and gives him a hard time and he's like, I girl, I don't even know what to say. I don't even know what to say to you, girl. So, yeah, a complete waste of time. After this, we get the first prayer from Pauline. So, the same way that her dreams pop up throughout the movie, we get these like confessional slash prayers that Pauline does, where she talks to God, who she currently does not really even believe in.

[00:11:14]>> I haven't read your book in its entirety. Can't bring myself to invest that much time into a work of literature that's received so many mixed reviews.

[00:11:20]>> And talks about her state of mind and the things that she's planning to do.

[00:11:24]Again, like with the dreams, I'm not going to talk about every prayer. I'm just going to talk about the ones that are telling to what happens in the movie. In this prayer confessional, she tells God that she is planning on having premarital sex and basically ask him for forgiveness in advance. She I thought that was funny. I was not raised religious. Okay, I am not a religious person. I have my own like belief systems and things that I think are too coincidental to be like accidents, I guess. But one thing that keeps me away from religion is the amount of shaming that goes on, especially shaming people for wanting or having sex. That along with like the whole idea of virginity and all that [ __ ] Just miss me with it. Honestly, miss me with it. I don't understand it. I don't care. Um, as long as everything is consensual, safe, and respectful, who gives a what people are doing? Honestly, I truly just don't understand that. Back at school with Pauline, we get a couple more cameos here, like literally back to back. Uh she's in her math class and her math teacher is Michael McDow. Like what is this cast? The budget for the movie went to thising cast cuz what is going on?

[00:12:28]And then right after she's in that class with Michael McDow, we skip to Phyllis in the guidance counselor's office and the guidance counselor is played by B.

[00:12:37]Porter's best ex-girlfriend from the Lord. No shade. Like honestly, Marley Matlin, uh aka Jodie Learner from the L Word. I'm about to go on a side tangent, so skip. don't care. Anyway, I love B.

[00:12:50]Porter, but I will never forgive her for what she did to Jodie Learner. I was so annoyed by this. Okay. How are you going to pursue a woman who did not want to date you? She turned you down multiple times. You learned sign language for her. You do all of that just to cheat on her with your baby mom's. Your baby mama. You You did all of that just to cheat on her with your baby mama anyway.

[00:13:11]Right. Right. Somebody should have beat Porter ass. No shade. Like Bet needed her mothering ass beat a couple times.

[00:13:17]her and Tina. Anyways, Bed Porter will pay for her crimes.

[00:13:21]I'm sorry, but yeah, let me get back on track. Anyway, Phyllis is in her office being abbleist because Marley Matlin is deaf in real life, so she plays deaf characters in in movies, but Phyllis is being abbleist towards her. Who was surprised?

[00:13:36]Anybody? Exactly. Phyllis is there to talk about catillian classes and Pauline comes to the office and does not seem to be the type of person to want to participate in catilian classes. So when Pauline makes her way to the office and finds out that's what her mom is there for, she takes the little flyer, balls it up and throws it at her mom and storms out. She hates her mom. She hates everything that her mom does and that is very understandable. Her mom sucks.

[00:13:59]Phyllising sucks. Later that night, Pauline tries to talk to her mother about catillian classes and expresses that she may be a little too old to go to these things. It seems like a very childish thing. It's like manners class, like you're teaching her how to be a lady. But Phyllis says that no daughter of hers is going off to college without learning how to be a proper lady, whatever the that means. They can't reach an agreement. So, Phyllis asks Bob for his input and Bob starts off by saying kind of like what your mother is trying to say. And before he could even like finish what he was saying, Phyllis cuts him off. She calls him spineless and repulsive and storms off for not taking her side, I guess. like she expected him to be like, "We decided that you're going to Contilion." Even though it sounded like he was about to defend her decision to make Pauline go, but you can't do nothing right with Phyllis. Also, I do want to recognize that there is often a a trope about like the overbearing wife and like the, you know, basically absent but present father. You know what I mean? Like, I get that that's what's going on here, but for the sake of the story, Phyllis sucks. Um, she absolutely sucks and the husband sucks too because he does nothing. He doesn't even do anything. He kind of just gave up because no matter what happens, Phyllis is going to be mad. But that's not an excuse to be a bad father. So yeah. And also the something that I wanted to point out is like this is how like overly religious people are. They are super judgmental and weird and racist and abbleist and all of these things, but they think that if they just ask God for forgiveness, then all of the terrible [ __ ] that they've done can just be washed away.

[00:15:35]Right. Right. Okay. Period. Later that night, Pauline has a dream where she climbs on top of a dead body and starts making out with it. Right. And now we see why she's like asking that type of stuff in school because she's having dreams about it and she wants to know if it may or may not be possible to do. You know, she may be like a bit of a necrophiliac, which is crazy. I am judging and pink shaming if that's your thing. I don't even want to call that a cuz that may be disrespectful to the community. No shade. Like dead bodies.

[00:16:04]That's insane. The next day at school, she introduces herself to the boyfriend of the mean girl from the day before, the little guy. His name is Adam, and he is played by the guy who played Peter Pan. He's the Peter Pan guy. I literally just forgot his name. Anyway, he's sitting at the bleachers with some of his friends and Pauline just straight up bluntly tells him that she wants him to take her virginity. She's not the one for beating around the bush. She lets him know straight up, "This is what I need from you. Here's my phone number."

[00:16:32]Uh, so there we go. And later, she tells her little sister more details about her plan to lose her virginity, which mind you, this is her little sister, like a younger girl. So, she tells Grace that she wants to lose her virginity on her period. and her sister is looking like, "Okay, like why are you telling me this?" And no, for real, like why are you telling her that? This girl is like 12, 13. But, you know, they have a relationship where they confide in each other about a lot of things. You know, Grace seems to be the only person that Pauline talks to, so I guess. But, no, I wouldn't say that to my little sister. I wouldn't tell my little sister. Nothing like that. Anyway, as we've seen from her dream, she has a thing for blood.

[00:17:13]So, that is why she wants to lose her virginity on her period. Luckily, Phyllis comes and um tells them that they're having dinner early. So, again, I want to say this like how I said in the May video, Pauline is showing some signs of like neurode divergence. Like, she has problems, you know, reading social cues and she's a bit awkward and she doesn't really know how to express herself in a way that isn't super, you know, blunt or whatever. And she's pretty aware of that. And that's why she wants to see a psychiatrist. She keeps trying to see a psychiatrist. She thinks that she may be. Pauline decides to give herself a nose piercing that night. And the next day, her mom notices and makes a big deal out of it, saying that she ruined her face. So dramatic. But Bob tries to cut the tension, joking around, saying that he pierced a few things when he was her age as well. Phyllis tells Pauline that she looks like trash and storms off again like a child. She's cannot regulate her emotions to save anybody's [ __ ] life. She sucks. Bob flips on Pauline after that and tells her to take the nose ring out and blames her for her mom's outburst basically. So right when you think that Bob is like cool, he like look what you did to your mom. Nobody did that to her. She is doing that to herself and you suck for now making Pauline feel like it's her fault. Later Bob and Pauline have a conversation on whether or not Phyllis is being too hard on Pauline. And Bob says no. Honestly, maybe Phyllis is right because Bob does not have a backbone. But you know that he's being too hard on Pauline. You know that she's being too hard on Pauline. Please, you see how she treats Pauline, man. Hell, how she treats you. You see how she treats you and you still can't tell her like it's time to course correct and maybe go about this a different way.

[00:18:47]Obviously, your way isn't working.

[00:18:48]Pauline is getting worse doing it your way. So, why don't we find another better, more efficient way to help our daughter who has problems, right? No.

[00:18:56]Okay. As Pauline and Grace are outside playing, Pauline notices a little girl across the street, one of the neighbors kids, who's outside in the driveway jumping rope. And she tries to spark up a conversation with this young lady. But the little girl is extremely rude to Pauline. And Grace sticks up for her, stepping in, telling her like, "Hey, don't talk to my sister like that [ __ ] No shade." And she takes Pauline into the house. I like Grace and Pauline's relationship. Again, Grace is really the only person, as far as we've seen, who's been nice to Pauline and stuck up for her in any kind of way. Grace is the only person who seems to allow Pauline to speak and say whatever she wants, like telling her about her plans, but it's like she is still like a little kid. So, and Pauline also really seems to care a lot about Grace as well. So, yeah, I do like their little relationship. While Pauline is studying later that night, Adam calls her saying that he wants to take Pauline up on her offer. And Pauline is so blunt with him.

[00:19:52]She's not doing this because she likes him. She is straight up on a mission. So when he calls her and says like, "Oh yeah, I want to, you know, take you up on your offer." She is like, "We can do a Monday pick me up at noon. Get off my phone." No [ __ ] Like when he calls her, she's like, "It's late. What do you want?" Straight like that. None of the pleasantries. She does not like this boy. She just likes the idea of having sex with him on her period. So, we jump to Monday and she tells her mom about Adam and that he's going to come pick her up for a study group and Phyllis is now excited to talk to Pauline, obviously, because now she's talking about a boy. So, she does Pauline's makeup and ask her about Adam. And this seems like the only time she's like genuinely interested in something that Pauline is doing because it involves a boy. It's so lame. I hate I hate women like this. I I truly do. I can't stand it. It's very pick me, choose me, you know? I hate that. Adam comes to pick her up in his BMW. Okay. And he takes her to a motel and Pauline tells Adam not to worry about her telling anybody because she wants this to be their little secret. Adam tells her that he bought condoms, the big kind. And and after Pauline tells him to take his pants off and she fills around a bit and then she says this, >> "It appears you're too small for the big kind."

[00:21:04]>> So a girl was not lying about him being tiny, but Pauline reassures him that that doesn't matter because it'll hurt less, whatever. But she just wanted to say that because she doesn't even want to use the condoms. She tells him that she's on birth control, so she doesn't need them. But that's literally not what condoms are only for. Again, guys, we got to pay attention to sex education class. So, they do wind up hooking up.

[00:21:27]And during this hookup, Pauline fantasizes about them being covered in blood and spraying blood everywhere. And she is having such a good time that she actually tears up from the experience because she finally gets to live out her blood fantasy. You know, you know, you know, again, I don't want to shame, so I'm just going to During the hookup, she tells him to go down on her. And remember, guys, she is on her period.

[00:21:52]And somehow Adam didn't know that, even though they are having sex with the lights on. Like, how do you how did you not see? Okay, what the [ __ ] are you looking at? Anyway, so he goes down there and starts to, you know, munch and of course the [ __ ] freaks out when he sees that she's bleeding and he goes to the bathroom and it's not it's not funny, guys. But like he quickly drops her the off and tells her, "Get the away from my car." And pulls off. He's not happy about it. And we jump to her prayer. We get another prayer from Pauline and she tells God that she does not want to get pregnant because she does not want to have an abortion. And then we get another weird dream. This one is a little goofy in my opinion. It's weird, but it's a little goofy. She pulls a baby out of her and it's like one of those little mini baby dolls. It looks like a miniature baby doll and it's covered in blood and a man with crazy black eyeshadow comes, puts the baby in the oven, and his CGI blows up. I don't even know if I can show you it, but just believe me, it's very goofy looking. It does not. This looks like what conservatives think abortions look like. You know what I mean? Like it's so bizarre and weird, but yes, that is a dream that Pauline has. The next morning, Grace is sadly informed that one of her friends from CF camp, cystic fibrosis camp, her best friend, actually died. She she died from her complications with cystic fibrosis. And she is extremely heartbroken about it and tells her dad that the worst part about having cystic fibrosis is that your friends die. and he's so incompetent and so avoidant. He doesn't even know how to comfort her in this moment. He just kind of is quiet and they just keep driving. He sucks. Both of the parents suck in their own ways.

[00:23:33]Phyllis is overbearing and Bob is extremely avoidant. So, they're like on the opposite of two extremes. It's not a good mix. I don't think everybody should have kids. No shade. Just because you can don't mean you should. Phyllis tells Pauline about Grace's friend and she tells Pauline to be a little nice to Grace while she's dealing with what she's, you know, dealing with while she's grieving. And Pauline asks where Grace is and Phyllis tells her that she is on her way to a doctor's appointment.

[00:23:58]Now, Pauline deduces that Grace is going to need a lung transplant because she doesn't seem to be getting any better.

[00:24:05]So, she tells Phyllis that maybe she should start looking for some alternatives because of the high risk of infection from doing something like a lung transplant. But Phyllis tells her that that's a long way down the road, so she doesn't really even need to worry about that. The next day, Pauline has another meeting with the Reverend, and she tells him this will be her last session because these sessions simply just aren't helping her. And after the meeting with the Reverend in another prayer, she prays for the power to cure her sister. And she prays that God kills her mother, but at least she prays for him to make it painless. Like she wants Phyllis gone, but she doesn't want Phyllis to go through any pain, which counts for something, I guess. But she's still praying like, "Kill this [ __ ] I can't stand her." The little jump rope girl comes to their door asking for money for a fundraiser, and Pauline tells her that if she comes there again, she will perform a tracheotomy on her.

[00:24:55]She do not like that little [ __ ] At school in the locker room, Pauline has a little spat with Adam's now ex-girlfriend. She says some very homophobic comments about her appearance and also some transphobic comments about her body. As we know, Pauline is not necessarily a punk in any situation, in any case. So, she throws some rude comments back at her. But this altercation does leave some effect on Pauline because we later see her overanalyzing her body in the mirror and she takes some lipstick and starts making marks on her stomach like a plastic surgeon. And so this just shows that Pauline did, you know, get a little insecure about her body after that conversation, even though she didn't show it while they were arguing. And when they have dinner later, the Catillia conversation comes up again and Phyllis says that she bought Pauline a nice little dress. And Phyllis says that Catilian will help Pauline find a husband. And Pauline jokes that she wants to get married to a black guy. Why you got to bring black people into it?

[00:25:54]Here we go. Can you guess what Phyllis says next? Something extremely racist.

[00:25:58]Yes, you got it. Of course. Of course.

[00:26:00]Phyllis is also racist. She's abbleist.

[00:26:03]She's racist, Christian. All of them.

[00:26:05]All of the above. She says that black men are notorious adulterers. What are you What are you talking about, [ __ ] All men are adulterers. Like, this that could be any man from any race. Not all men. Let me Not all men. Not all men, guys. Please. But any [ __ ] from any race could be an adulterer, bro. It's not just black men. Please. Please. Does anybody slap this [ __ ] in her mouth?

[00:26:25]No. Of course they don't. Bob just stares at her angrily and [ __ ] she's not scared of your [ __ ] ass. So what is that going to do? Nothing exactly. Yeah, Pauline, you ain't have to bring [ __ ] into y'all up situation. Y'all little up conversation. You know your mama weird as why black people got to catch a stray. The next day at school, Pauline is at the water fountain and her principal talks to her and her principal is Ray Weiss. I know Ray Weiss from Twin Peaks. Sure. While Pauline is in school, she comes up with a plan to get out of going to Catilian though. The plan is to drink some EpiPac so she can throw up and pretend that she was sick, like she came down with something, got some food poisoning or something like that. So, she drinks it in the bathroom and comes back to class and throws up on one of the bullies from earlier who was talking [ __ ] about her. And no, Shane, Pauline, [ __ ] you got to die. If you dis if you throw up on if you throw up on me on purpose, [ __ ] it's up for you. It's up in the stuck. Natalie will be handing out batty chains. No shade. Like, [ __ ] don't ever throw up on me. Ew. This plan does not work when she gets home because Phyllis says that when she got the call from the school, she immediately went to check the medicine cabinet and saw that the EpiCac syrup was gone. So, it did not work. And sister, you know, your mom is watching every single move that you're doing. You got to be a little more thorough. Like, you got to cover all your bases at least like get like replace the epiackac or something like it's fine. She winds up going to Catillian anyway and she's at the little Catilian ball. Pauline points out how out of place she looks due to the age difference. Mind you, Pauline is 18.

[00:27:55]Again, Catillian is like something for little ass kids to teach them manners and the proper way of speaking and eating and whatever the So, she looks absolutely out of place. Pauline sees a little girl sitting alone and she goes and tries to make, you know, friends with her. And the girl tells her that boys don't talk to her. They only talk to her when they're asking her to help them with their homework. and Pauline asks her if she's ever considered getting any work done.

[00:28:21]So, that didn't work out too well. The little girl just gets up and walks away.

[00:28:25]Um, mind you, this little girl is like 13 and you already telling her like, you know, maybe you should consult a plastic surgeon. Fix that for you. Pauline don't have no filter at all, bro. Grace is also at this dance, of course, and she gets caught kissing a boy. And now Phyllis is upset and wants to pull them out of Catilian. H, right. Right.

[00:28:44]Pauline kisses some boy who begrudgingly came to ask her to dance. He basically like came up and asked her to dance like someone told him to. And Pauline has a cold sore on her mouth that she got from her dad when she was little. She almost drowned at the [ __ ] pool and he gave her mouth to mouth and he had a cold sore. So now she has like this reoccurring cold sore on her mouth and the boy says something rude to her and she kisses him which again don't do that. That's weird, illegal. But yeah, she kissed him on the mouth and he called her an arur after that. He says he only asked her to dance because he thought she was that word. Everybody, everybody got to go. Everybody has to go. The next day, instead of going to school, Pauline goes to the library and her mother confronts her when she gets home and Phyllis doesn't believe that Pauline actually went to the library. So, in a act of defiance, Pauline just takes her book bag and dumps all of the books on the floor like, "Here, [ __ ] You ain't believe me. Here go the books." And Phyllis slaps her on the face for that. It's really Phyllis. Honestly, is Loki this whole family except for Grace and Pauline. Like Pauline obviously needs help. Pauline does a lot of weirded up [ __ ] Yes. But I don't think I don't think that Pauline is inherently a bad person. I don't think that Pauline is a bad person. I think that Pauline is doing a lot of [ __ ] as a cry for help and nobody is paying attention to that.

[00:30:00]You know what I mean? Whereas Phyllis is just a shitty parent. But later at a tense dinner, Pauline takes her food and throws it at her mom after that cuz like [ __ ] you did just slap her earlier.

[00:30:10]And after this little altercation, she overhears her mother talking about how much of a problem Pauline has become.

[00:30:17]And she goes as far as to say that Pauline is impossible to love, which is extremely that is your child. However your child turns out is your fault. As a parent, I hate the idea that like parents have no bearing on how their children turn out. There are rare occasions where a kid grows up in a good family that treated them well and did all this stuff and they wind up bad. But for the most part, your parents have a lot to do with who you become. Period.

[00:30:44]Point blank. And it's like you're saying that she's hard to love and she's been acting out and she's getting worse. But she's been asking you to get her help and you have been ignoring that. She knows that her behavior is escalating and she doesn't know how to deal with it. So, it's just going to keep escalating. Like, she literally doesn't know what to do. So, she's already starting to act out some of her fantasies and causing harm to her peers.

[00:31:05]Like, her behavior is escalating and she keeps asking you guys for help and you're not doing anything. Again, I am not trying to imply that all people with untreated mental illnesses are a danger to others. Majority of the time, it is the complete opposite. Okay? But Pauline's behavior is clearly escalating in a violent way outward. Like, she's outwardly getting more uh violent towards other people, right? And Phyllis doesn't do anything to better the situation. She just constantly antagonizes and ridicules her daughter.

[00:31:35]Like simple. The next day, Pauline finds a dead bird on the sidewalk and she takes it home. The jump rope girl catches her doing this. Like the little girl, she caught her take the bird, but she didn't say anything. She just kind of let her pass. At home, Pauline tries to save the bird by performing an operation on it, but the bird is clearly way too far gone. She cuts the bird open and starts removing its organs. And then she licks the blood off of her hands and flushes the organs down the toilet.

[00:32:01]Later on that evening, while Pauline is in her sister's room, she puts on her breathing mask. And when she takes it off, it's extremely like oily and slimy.

[00:32:10]You can tell that she's not she's not taking care of herself. She's doesn't wash her face. She doesn't look like she brushes her teeth often either. Paulina is just simply like declining and she's not taking care of herself mentally, physically at all. She has another dream that I cannot show because it has nudity. She's walking with a bunch of people. The women that are walking with her are topless, so can't show that. But they walk up to a body and it is cut open and she pulls a decapitated head out of the body and that decapitated head is hers. And I did laugh at this cuz it looks a little goofy. Sorry, but that that did get a chuckle out of me. I don't know. I don't know what this means, but that's a dream that she has.

[00:32:45]Phyllis comes to talk to Pauline saying that she has been reading a book because she's in a book club and that book has caused her to do some self-reflection.

[00:32:54]Something that a lot of people need to do a lot more often. A lot of people do not look inward enough and that's why we have a lot of problems that we do today.

[00:33:00]She admits that she can be a bit more patient with Pauline. Pauline is listening to her speak and she's like, "It sounds like you need to keep going to that [ __ ] book club cuz finally." She says her realizing this is a few years too late, you know, which I agree. Phyllis explains that Pauline's behavior is becoming more concerning.

[00:33:19]Yes. Yes, it is. I agree. And she says that when she was Pauline's age, her mother did something to her that was terrible. And she doesn't want her and Pauline to have the same kind of relationship that Phyllis has with her own mother. But again, it's a little too late for that. Sister, you've become your mother. That was another thing that she asked her husband earlier when she asked if she was being too hard on Pauline. She was like, "Am I turning into my mother?" And he said something along the lines of like, "No, cuz if you were, I would have divorced you. I wouldn't be like helping with the bills right now. I would be filing for divorce if you were like your mother." But she is. I can kind of tell what her mother's like. Okay. But Pauline is beyond the point of reconciliation with Phyllis.

[00:33:57]So, she just storms off. And Phyllis does, you know, shed a couple tears behind that. Pauline looks out her window and catches those bullies from school struggling to properly spell [ __ ] because they're spray painting it on their garage and they teepee the house.

[00:34:12]We see later on the family is standing outside and we see that they spray painted Pauline is a on the garage and teepee their entire yard. It's very unfortunate. Um, this causes Pauline to snap and the next day at school, she slams the one girl, her name is Natalie, she slams her head against the locker and storms out of the building. She is called into the principal's office and she tries to explain that all of these behavioral issues and all of the things that she's going through could be explained away with a visit to a psychiatrist. Now, in her own way, she's not just trying to get help from her parents. She's also reaching out to other adults that are supposed to care about her well-being, saying, "Hey, I need to speak to a medical professional.

[00:34:53]what I am doing is not normal and I'm sure they will tell you why. But he tells her that there's nothing wrong with her and she just needs to take responsibility for her own actions and he suspends her indefinitely. Again, another adult that has failed this troubled young woman. Okay. When she gets home, her mother scolds her. Of course, when is she not scolding her?

[00:35:12]And Pauline again tries to tell her mother that she has some sort of untreated illness. And Pauline self diagnoses saying that she may have BPD, borderline personality disorder, but her mother is not trying to hear it. Later in her room, Pauline gives herself a tattoo of the Red Cross symbol. I don't know why. At dinner, Grace peeps that the tensions are a little higher than usual, and it starts another argument amongst the family. Her dad has completely flipped on her and both parents gang up on her telling her that she is delusional and she will never get into medical school again because she wants to be a surgeon. She is obsessed with surgery and a lot of her dreams also have things to do with her being, you know, obsessed with surgery in some type of way. It's always some type of operation going on. So they have that big blow up and the next morning Phyllis tells Pauline that they have finally agreed to take Pauline to a psychiatrist but the earliest appointment that they can get is next week. So she um won't be able to see anyone till basically a week from that conversation. Now, in the background, Grace's condition has been getting worse, and Phyllis tells Bob that the doctor has recommended that they put Grace on the transplant list, and Pauline overhears this conversation and comes up with a plan to save her sister. The next day, she sees Grace reading a wedding magazine, and she asks, you know, Grace like what she's doing, why she's reading that. And Grace says that she hopes she'll live long enough to be able to have her own wedding. And Pauline assures her that she will do everything in her power to make sure that that happens for Grace.

[00:36:45]And Grace tells her that if she ever gets married one day that she wants Pauline to be her maid of honor. This is probably the most tender moment in the movie. And it is so sad.

[00:36:56]It's so sad. Okay. At their final dinner, Pauline tells her parents that she appreciates them for putting up with her and that she's going to make them proud. We don't know what she means by that, but that's what she tells them.

[00:37:08]She realizes that it's not about her anymore and Bob tries to be supportive, but Phyllis ruins the moment per usual, saying that they'll believe it when they see it. You know, kind of just brushing off what Pauline is saying. Phyllis changes the subject, telling the girls that her and Bob are going out to dinner tomorrow and a girl named Jennifer will be coming over to look after them, to babysit. Basically, Pauline is extremely annoyed by this because Jennifer is only 2 years older than her. Again, mind you, Pauline is 18 years old. So, Jennifer's like 20 and she has to come and watch Pauline. This conversation is ended by Grace having a bit of a coughing fit and we cut to Pauline's final prayer. She thanks God for believing in her and says that she's starting to believe in him little by little. She also tells God that she will be out of reach for a while, so she hopes that he doesn't get lonely. I want to point out that the the more that Pauline slips into her delusions, the more she's starting to believe that God is actually on her side, that she's actually talking to God and she's believing in him. I just kind of wanted to point that out as something that happens in this movie. Her mental health is declining and now she's starting to, you know, have her beliefs that God may be real. H interesting. And I'm not trying to talk about all people who believe in religions, okay? Don't get me wrong. If you have your personal beliefs, that is on you. I am talking about the people who use their religion to shame and disrespect and oppress others. That is who I'm talking about.

[00:38:33]I'm not saying that you can't be religious. I'm not saying that you can't have the thing that you believe in. You can. But religious people are some of the worst people I know. Just saying.

[00:38:40]The next day, Phyllis tells Pauline that Jennifer canled so Bob will be staying to look after them while she goes to whatever dinner it is. Pauline takes this as an opportunity to enact her plan. She puts her plan in motion. So Pauline makes herself and Bob a cup of tea and she drugs Bob's tea. Then she goes outside and sees the little girl jumping rope again and she apologizes to her and tells the little girl that she has some old jump rope that she wants to give her and because Grace can't use it because her lungs are bad. And this was a ploy to lure the little girl into their backyard so that she could knock her out using chloroform. She goes to Grace's room and Grace is coloring. So cute. She tells Grace that she's not going to understand what she's about to do, but one day she will thank her and she drugs Grace the same way with the chloroform. And again, it's like she already has bad lungs, so you lucky that that didn't kill her right there. Like her breathing in that toxic [ __ ] You lucky that didn't kill her immediately.

[00:39:38]Lastly, she cuts all of her hair off and we cut and see that Pauline has put both girls in the garage and performed a botched lung transplant, killing the two young girls in the process. She is fully deluded, okay, at this moment. Like, she thinks that she just did the procedure of a lifetime. Phyllis returns home to find Bob knocked out and tied up on the couch. And she finds Pauline in the garage covered in blood with the girls.

[00:40:04]And Pauline tries to explain what she did again, completely diluted, trying to show off her suture work, you know, saying that this is it's beautiful. It's miraculous. Like, mom, I you you should look at this. Phyllis is in shock and she's crying and she asks like, "What has Pauline done?" And Pauline continues to explain that she didn't know what to do with the other girl's body. So, she just practiced her incisions on her, calling her work extraordinary. Phyllis just breaks down and hugs her daughter for the first time in this movie. I haven't I don't think she hugs her ever.

[00:40:36]Pauline snaps out of her delusions and breaks down as Will. And they both scream and cry together. And the movie ends. Your girlfriend's friend thinks you're gay.

[00:40:45]>> A lot of the events in this movie could have been avoided if Phyllis had agreed to get Pauline professional help sooner.

[00:40:51]I do think that if Pauline got proper treatment, this would not have happened.

[00:40:55]It would not have happened. Pauline had some things going on and she knew that the things that she were dreaming about and the things that she was doing weren't normal. Like she knew that she had an issue and she was constantly asking for help and crying out for help, but nobody cared. They all kind of ignored it. And again, it wasn't just her mom and her dad who just failed her.

[00:41:16]It was pretty much all of the adults in this movie. Again, this isn't to say I I want to keep reiterating this because I don't want people to think that's what I'm saying. This isn't saying that people who have untreated, undiagnosed illnesses are somehow inherently evil or capable of murder or any of that. I'm not saying that. Most of us right now are walking around undiagnosed because of a multitude of reasons. Abbleism and the stigma against people with mental illnesses. Religion as we see in this film is being used as a alternative method to treatments. Also, the lack of money, resources, and proper health care prevents a lot of people from getting the help that they need. So, all of these problems are presented in this film, and two young girls died because of it. It also makes the last conversation between Pauline and her mom more haunting because Pauline tells her straight up like she is a couple years too late. Also, it makes the last conversation that she has with Grace even sadder because in Pauline's mind, she is going to make sure that her sister survives. She's the only person capable of saving her sister and she tries and she is ultimately the reason that her sister dies. She had already accepted what she needed to do to save her sister. So, however that conversation panned out with her and her mom, it probably would have been the same outcome. This one was a weird tragedy. Did I enjoy this movie? A little. It's weird and disjointed at times. Even from the way that I had to tell it, it's kind of like I'm jumping from this to this to this. It's very, you know, interesting the way that it was made. But the story and the concept are good. I do appreciate it. I thought it was creative. I thought it was artistic. I also like the short. I did watch the short in preparation for this video. I do like the short a little more. I like the original actress performance a little more. I don't think that it should have been a featurelength film though. If they had more money, I think they could have like done maybe like a 30-minute short. I think that would have been cool.
