When selecting AV equipment, consumers should prioritize value and reliability over marketing claims, as demonstrated by the comparison between the Jime Titan/Max projectors (offering 4,000-5,000 lumens at $3,000) versus the Epson LS12000 (2,500 lumens at $6,000), where the lower-priced option provides significantly better brightness despite having software issues that may be resolved. Additionally, audio equipment troubleshooting requires understanding that amplifier power ratings often represent peak rather than continuous power, and electrical interference issues typically stem from improper grounding or wiring proximity rather than equipment failure.

The AV Experience - Answering all of your AV and Home Theater QuestionsAdded:
Good evening everybody.
Uh it's just me right now.
>> [laughter] >> Ryan said he forgot. He's actually getting his tire fixed. He'll be on here when he can. He might join live.
Uh let's see.
I see some people in the chat. Mostly >> [laughter] >> It's so ridiculous.
Mostly just commenting on the fact that we're uh not getting started here. So, uh look, there's Ryan. He's coming in on his phone. We'll see if I can add him to the to the to the stage.
>> [laughter] >> Stop it.
It's amateur hour for sure, man. No, that's it's not hour. That's how this whole thing goes. That's how this whole That's why people watch it. It's just to watch us fail in the perpetual train wreck that never ends. That's what happens here.
>> [laughter] >> Your Your audio and video is so bad. You like >> [laughter] >> Is it that bad?
>> a 3-second delay on what you're saying.
You can see.
>> Well, let me try this.
>> [laughter] >> Is that any better? Oh, yeah. Well, at least it won't like make us go crazy.
So, that's good.
>> Okay. We'll just do it this way then.
I had to >> happened? You got a flat tire and you're taking care of it?
>> My son did. So, what I think happened kids learning to drive is and I can't I mean, he's a kid. So, it is what it is. He got a tire alert that all of his tires were low.
Right? So, we we fill up the tires a few days ago.
And my wife tells me after I've dealt with this whole thing that, "Oh, yeah.
Our son told us that the tire pressure light came on again this morning."
I'm like, "Oh, okay. Well, that usually indicates that there's a problem." Sure.
>> And so, he goes out and he's starting his first job as a lifeguard. So, he's leaving the meeting that they're having to get everybody brought up to speed.
And he's like, "Man, this road feels really bumpy."
I don't know.
And he keeps driving on it.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah.
>> Oh, man, it's getting bumpier. What is happening? Yeah.
>> This whole time the air pressure light's on. Keeps going and then eventually he's like, "Ah, it's not accelerating very well. Something's really wrong." So, then he finally pulls over and the tire's just shredded.
And I when I was doing stuff this morning, I didn't really think about it cuz we have a lot of vehicles in our house and coming in and out of our driveway. Yeah. There were tire marks in the driveway. And I didn't really equate I thought they were from a heavy truck. I didn't really put two and two together what it was. Yeah. And now it all makes sense. You know, and maybe you've never seen this. When your tire's really low on air, Mhm. and the rim is pushing down on the outside edges of the sidewall, it'll leave a tire mark on wherever it is.
And so, I hadn't thought of that.
And now that I have, I realize that he's been driving on this fully flat tire all day.
>> [laughter] >> Yeah. So, we I he Unfortunately, most modern cars now don't come with spares.
Yeah. So, I had to go out there. Our insurance it was covered to get it towed, so it got towed to Discount Tire.
Discount Tire does not have a drop box, so I had to follow the tow truck there to get the key. And now I am I had to drop him off at practice and now I'm waiting about another hour and then I got to go get him from practice. So, that's been my evening. And then I forgot, after inviting Jonathan yesterday, that we were going to have a stream. And I here I am making fun of Jonathan for forgetting the stream and I'm just like off in la-la land. And Jonathan's like, "Hey, you got to be here?"
No.
>> that was going to happen. You knew I knew it [laughter] was going to happen.
So, here I am talking from my phone with horrific audio and can't use my camera because it just makes it all worse and I don't want to give anybody a seizure.
Uh So, that's my night.
Um Bob was over today. We were calibrating some stuff, so that was fun.
>> [laughter] >> Try it once more.
Did he mess up the rim? Like when he's driving on that spare tire?
>> No, the rim's fine. At least the front of the rim's fine. I can't tell behind it.
You ever seen that Ross Creation? Uh he's like kind of a awkward situations comedian type thing.
He uh he had a skit He had a skit where they took all the rubber off the tires on his vehicle and drove into the the shop and said he had an air conditioner problem and acted like he didn't even know he didn't have tires.
>> [clears throat and laughter] >> This thing this could be a skit your son could reenact.
He could do it without even trying.
Sometimes the things that he does are just like how did you not notice this?
Yeah. I got in it to drive it to get it a little bit out of the road.
And I had to push the gas halfway down to just get it to move. Mhm.
I'm like, "Man, how did you not know?
You're not driving a tank. What is happening here? How did you not notice something was going on?"
>> Well, you should audibly be able to hear it too cuz those tires >> You could.
>> are real loud.
And he said, "Oh, I just thought the tire the road was bumpy." I'm like, "Man, it's not. You can see the road. I don't What are you >> [laughter] >> Oh, well.
Oh, man.
Well, live and learn.
I have a funny story about a car situation from a co-worker years ago.
So, this was when I was a young man and he was a young man, too. We worked on a help desk together.
He got married to a gal and she had 90,000 mi on her car. It was like '89 or something, if I remember right.
A lot at the time and and he said when did I say casual conversation? They've been married for a few months. When's your next oil change due?
And she's like, what are you talking about? He's like, for your car. When do you When do you need >> Oh, no.
And she's like, I don't know what you're talking about.
>> [laughter] >> She had bought that car new.
It was a Chevy, like a little small [clears throat] Chevy Cavalier or something like that. Uh-huh.
She had never changed the oil, didn't know you were even supposed to.
And they took it into a shop and they said it came out like sludge and it was one of those things where like shortly after they changed the oil the engine messed up. You know, like sometimes they say like if you haven't done maintenance, sometimes it's better to keep the original fluid in there.
It was one of those situations. I don't know >> oil is holding the engine together.
>> [laughter] >> But he said like right after they changed the engine like went out. And then they changed the oil and it just I can't. Giving up. Yeah. So, I was thinking like if you're a dad and that happens to your daughter, you you might have kind of failed at some sort of some sort of information sharing along the 18 years that you Yeah, I think my first phone call would have been to my wife's father. Be like, what are you doing? Uh Yeah. I'll send you the repair bill.
Yeah. Oh, man.
My wife knows better.
My wife tries to put things off, like she'll procrastinate. Mhm. But I won't procrastinate on maintenance like that cuz I don't Mhm.
>> I'm going to do it anyway and I'd rather it be okay when I do it instead of just putting it off. Mhm. I'm trying [clears throat] to get my daughter to where she's going to be self-sufficient and not dependent on anybody so she can do everything.
Sure.
But we'll we'll see. It's good for this stuff to happen. I It would have been a lot easier if there was a spare, but there wasn't a spare, unfortunately. I tried looking around for buying a spare and nobody local had a spare, so had to get it towed. Oh, well.
Uh do you watch anything?
>> I can throw some in there. Oh, I watched the movie. You want to talk about that?
I didn't watch the movie. District 9, you're the one that picked it. I know.
>> [laughter] >> What do you What are you doing? I don't know.
Oh.
>> I just well I don't I don't know. I don't know. We can talk about it. I remember it.
That happened last time with War of the Worlds. I think you picked that one, too, and then didn't watch it and you was like, "I know it. We can talk about it." I I it's I'm a failure.
>> [laughter] >> I'm a failure. Let's talk about it, though, cuz I remember the movie.
All right. Um well, what do you remember or liking about it or disliking about it? Like talk about that and then I'll >> the movie.
I think the I really liked the plot because it was such an interesting and non really that plot had never been done before where the aliens are the ones held in effectively a camp.
Mhm. And I just thought it was a really interesting premise and I liked that it was the complete opposite of an alien invasion movie where it was the aliens that were being not treated well.
Sure. So, that was fascinating.
Um I think it needed a sequel.
But, I also appreciate that they just left it and then ended.
I think I saw recently just even on YouTube that they're going to be having a sequel. It's going to be called District 10. And it's been like a long time coming, but they're planning on doing it. That's kind of what I was I was saying. As I was kind of looking up some reviews on District 9 to see how it was received, and I saw that that news was out there.
So, what news? A sequel?
>> going to make Yeah, they're going to make a sequel. District 10. Oh god.
I don't know. I liked the movie okay. I tell you, I don't know if you'll remember this having seen it. I don't know how long ago you saw it, but I I lost some interest in it when they jumped the shark, so to speak. Do you remember at the in the end of the scene, he's turning into the alien. The spoiler alert, guys.
Um he's turning into an alien because he got sprayed by that spray. Yep.
>> And and he wants to turn back into human.
So, he's talking to kind of that smart alien, the guy that's the father figure that has the young alien. Mhm. And he's And he's saying like he finds out it's going to take the father figure 3 years to to get him to change back. And he like loses his temper and knocks that guy out. He's being chased by the entire like government apparatus that's, you know, trying to like test with him and and capture him and kill him, basically.
He's They're hot on his trail. There's helicopters flying overhead. There's agents all over the place swarming the place. The guy that can take the ship up to the mothership, he hits him over the head and knocks him out because he's so mad it's going to take 3 years. And he's And he just had escaped the facility where they were trying to kill him. They were actually going to like harvest his organs and stuff for research and were going to kill him. So, like I was like, why would you Okay, it's going to take you 3 years to turn back to human. Why are you going to destroy your literally only escape out of here?
Um And then it got even dumber from that point on where he all of a sudden could know how He didn't know how to use any of those alien things. He's suddenly driving their ship. He's suddenly piloting their like mech warrior suit. I was like, what is happening? I watched it over I watched it over at Tim's house. And And at that point we were both looking at each other kind of like cross-eyed, like what is going on right now? It It was cool until that point and then I lost I lost track.
>> Yeah, it Luckily that's kind of towards the very end of the movie, so there's not much more that happens.
It did lose me at that point. I A lot of movies do that where they hit the climax and then they just It's like they don't know what to do with it or something. Yeah.
They >> there could have been so much I don't You got to think someone storyboarded this out.
And you think someone along the way is some of the people would be like, that didn't make sense. Like the rest of the movie could make sense. What are What are we doing here? Let's let's rein this back. Cuz they didn't have to knock him out. They could have let They could have both crawled in there. He could have like flew up to the mothership. They could have had all the action sequences they had with him not knocking out the guy that was trying to, you know, the alien that was trying to help him. Mhm.
[clears throat] That didn't make any sense.
Yeah, you would think that would happen.
You never really rooted for that guy 100% either because he was kind of both a dolt and not, you know, when he does that kind of stuff to the to the person who's actually trying to help him, it just makes it so you don't really care about him.
>> Prime of passion?
Yeah. Uh yeah. I mean, I think that was part of the premise of the movie, just how people do things without thinking.
At least that's what it felt like, very much.
Okay, so what did you think about the video and the audio?
So I watched it over at Tim's house and I I thought both were really good. I Especially we looked up the budget on the movie, it was only $30 million.
>> It's low.
That's wild. The CG is so good in that movie.
>> It's really good.
And there's a lot of close-up shots of that CG. Yeah.
And it it did really well. And it it really takes me back to a lot of those movies that came out during that time period.
CG I feel like was a lot better than than it is now.
Like look at Pirates of the Caribbean with whatever the squid guy's face and Transformers and all that CG was on another level and now I feel like it's kind of gone down in a way.
Maybe it's because my expectations are high and it was really that was the forefront of really high quality CGI, but this movie's sound and visuals were really good for how much that movie cost to make.
Yeah, it actually it's it's so good, surprisingly so good for the video specifically, that you're wondering like, "Well, why are these other movies cost like 200 million or 3 or 400 million when they Well, like how did they do that for 30 million?" Basically.
>> know. Compared to what else you see price-wise. I don't know.
But I would agree it was very, very good.
So.
Um well, what movie are we going to watch next that I'm not going to watch?
>> [laughter] >> There was someone in chat who said he's poked something at us for quite a while and we should watch that and I don't even remember what it is. [laughter] So, maybe he'll speak up again and recommend it. We'll take a look at that one. Uh another thing that was interesting, I didn't know this. This was a piece of information and trivia that Tim had me had me with or tested me with. That movie, District 9, was actually originally going to be Halo.
They They somehow lost like agreement with Microsoft to pursue Halo and so they turned it all the set pieces, like a lot of the stuff that was already in place for the Halo movie, they turned it into District 9. They changed the story around. I did not know that. Had you heard that? I didn't know that either.
Pretty interesting.
Hm.
And so, Peter Jackson was originally going to do Halo uh and then they canned him and he became like instead of the director of the producer of this District 9. I think it's what the story was.
Oh, and by the way, I thought I'd seen that before, but after I watched it, I wasn't so sure that I have. I think I must have just seen clips of it cuz there was a lot of stuff in there I didn't remember. If I watched it, I didn't remember or I haven't seen it.
I've just seen periodic clips over the years.
And I think I had >> Elysium and Chappie feel very much like that movie. I I think I thought it confused with Elysium myself cuz I kept saying I I was kept thinking like where's Matt Damon? And I even after >> [laughter] >> I was like where's Matt Damon? He's not even in this. It's like 30 minutes in the movie. He's like that's not even this movie.
>> [laughter] >> I was like huh, all right. Well, good pick for me then.
Good job, Ryan. Yeah. Sucks that you didn't watch it, but good job.
>> [laughter] >> Hm.
Sound was good. Someone's asking if the sound was good. Yeah, it was. Sound was Sound was great.
Video is the part that really sets it apart though. That That movie's video is way above where comparable other movies are.
It's DTS-MA. It's not Atmos. It came out actually before Atmos was around and I They might have a remastered version. I did not have that. I just had a Blu-ray.
Your Blu-ray in fact, Ryan, that you had given me when that in that pile.
Hm.
I remember.
Was it a dog-eaten Blu-ray?
>> one >> [laughter] >> That one was not. No. It was fully intact.
I think it was a pawn shop one. Ryan gave me a big pile of Blu-rays and some of them were like half eaten cuz the dog had found them and decided they were chew toys. Not very many of them, but some of them. Oh, the Lord of the Rings box set was one of them. That was heartbreak.
>> Yeah, unfortunately. But the discs were okay. Just the They were.
The case was not.
Case was not.
All right, let's see here. We're scrolling down. We got a couple questions. I'm going to I'm going to bring one of them up here. You have anything else you want to discuss before we move on to questions?
Not really, no.
Mike Cortez says, "Hey guys, thinking about adding a Dayton Audio Signature 18 sub to my movie room. I plan to build a sealed box, but what internal volume should I aim for? AI suggests Butterworth or Bessel QTC."
Uh AI is pretty good about saying that.
And also on Dayton's site, they usually give a range or have traditionally given a range of what they would recommend for their sealed sides.
I wouldn't lose sleep if you're within the margins that they say. There's a There's some grace that you can have with building a sealed box. A smaller box will have more air resistance, so it will require more power to push the driver. You will lose a little bit of the free output at the lower extensions.
A larger box gives you a little bit more extension. You can overdrive the volume the the driver sometimes. You could make it uh make bad noises or hit its its limits a little bit easier with less power.
Um if you have the space, usually a bigger box is a little bit better, especially with modern DSPs that are available on amp because you don't have to drive the drivers hard to get there.
Um if you have a good strong motor like the SS has, you're probably not going to make a whole lot of difference in sound quality either way as long as you're keeping it within the limits of the driver.
>> say that typically the stronger the motor, the easier it is to get away with a bigger box.
That's true.
Cuz it's going to be able to start and stop that driver, especially stop. I'm pulling up the Dayton Audio site to see if they have any recommended on the spec sheet. They usually do.
And if they don't have it on the spec sheet, which I don't see it on the spec sheet surprisingly, um they usually have it on FAQ.
It does give of course all the parameters on there, so you can plug that into any of the woofer design things and get a box volume that they recommend based on the driver specs.
>> [snorts] >> And the driver specs from Dayton Audio are usually pretty on point. Like if you were to measure them, they're usually not fudged. they're usually accurate.
Uh let's see.
That one doesn't have it.
I don't have this information at the tip of my tongues, but it shouldn't be very far away if you're doing a web search or if you get on the AVS forum and kind of ask.
Uh does it say it in this longer list of specs here?
No, it doesn't. But you can plug this into like um uh actually AI's is good as any of them anymore now what they is I have all those things ingested and can use them.
You usually and I'm not even going to hazard a guess because I haven't done this, but usually 18s are pretty happy with like 3 to 5 cubic feet of space.
And you're in you're pretty safe regardless of what you do in that range typically.
All right, next question.
Majak says, "Have you guys been in touch with Dylan from Buckeye lately? Is there any Buckeye amp news?"
I'm not sure if that's something we should be having news about.
Uh is there any news on their website?
Has something happened? I don't know. I haven't heard anything.
>> [clears throat] >> Let's see.
Spring update.
This is recent, 5/3. He says, "Hello all, it's been a few months since we posted any updates. We just want to let you provide a quick message. Thanks for the ongoing support of audio community enthusiasts. We've been hard at work every day filling more and more orders.
One of the reasons for the lack of updates, we are hard at work behind the scenes in our quest to finally bring a true 16-channel amplifier solution to the market. Rest assured, when the time comes more information it will be provided. Thank you everyone." So it seems like he's doing well. He's got a lot of orders keeping him busy. He's got a 16 amp 16-channel amplifier coming to the market. That's all that's all good.
I have not heard anything.
So hopefully soon.
You'll know when we know.
Prince Derama 5691 says, "So here in China we can already buy the Jime RS30 Horizon 30 internationally, but I don't know if I want that or the LS9000. What would you all go for?"
Oh, boy.
I don't like the LS9000.
I sure I over spoke you, so say that again. I don't like the LS9000. Nor do I.
And I feel like it's >> it's fine.
It's fine.
But it really lacks contrast.
Really bad.
It's like 2000 to 1 contrast and it and the part where it really fails is that the dynamic contrast is non-existent, it seems like. So, you're just kind of stuck there is what we saw when we demoed it.
>> Yeah. Which is not black. That's great.
>> XGIMI RS3000?
RS30. Released April 2026. High-end laser 4K line up. Advanced Quasar laser 42 6800 ISO lumens. Adjustable stand.
Looks kind of like that Dangbei stuff, I think. It's got like a little gimbal looking stand that it's on.
I I don't know. I haven't read about the RS30 at all. I'm not the one to ask about spending some more time on this, but I know that the Titan or Max is on Kickstarter right now from Jime. Would you consider that one? Is there a reason that you would want this RS30 instead of the Titan or Max?
The other >> other projectors.
The all the >> What's the budget? What How much is that LS9000?
Well, he's probably in the two to three thousand dollar US dollar range, right?
At that at those models. Well, the LS9000's four, isn't it?
>> [snorts] >> I can't check cuz I'm on my phone. I I will I will look. I don't I don't know.
LS9000 MSRP.
And he's obviously in China, so I don't know what their prices are. They're either.
Crutchfield would be fine. 4,000, you're right.
For the LS9000.
In USD, what other For $4,000?
>> a 5050 UB over the LS9000, and I think there's some people say you I think you might have said you can't buy that anymore.
That was the model before, the last bulb model. Yeah. No, you can't. You get a 60 a 6000 series, I think.
I can buy it still from Epson's site, new.
Oh, never mind. It says notify me, so that's never going to go through.
You're wrong, right? Oh, oh, okay. Yeah, I stand corrected.
For I mean, the three grand is the the Jimmy Titan Nor Max.
>> [snorts] >> What? So, here in sh RS30 has the same components as the Titan War, but at a cheaper price point.
Uh the So, I was talking to Bob about this today, and I I guess he has read a little bit about the thread.
Jonathan, I don't know if you're caught up on it. I certainly am not, so I'm just I'm speaking hearsay. I read about 25% of it anymore, cuz it's just so fast-moving. It's like >> that it's going through Now, we're on the down turn now, where people are starting to complain about things. Yes, that's exactly right. And like It's almost [laughter] It's another one of those I told you, but it whatever. So, the Nor and the Titan Max are having some pretty serious issues with the RBE removal.
And if that's bothersome to you, I don't think it's a projector that I could recommend at all, cuz I don't think the RBE removal tool I don't know that they're going to be able to get it figured out.
Cuz supposedly it's got some serious issues, and then there's some other people I won't name names, but some reviewers that I would trust that are saying that there's other negative issues, but they're not saying them publicly, which I hate when they do that.
Um but I think that projector has more issues than people want to bring to light. It's hard to talk about.
It's real hard to judge. I mean, we were talking about that on the Discord lately, because there's some people in the thread still talking about how it's like the best thing ever, and then there's other people saying like all these issues that they're noticing, and you don't without really knowing the people that are involved, like I know a few of them.
Um even the even the two that I know, one's much more hotter on it than the next one. So like without seeing it yourself, you kind of just have to gauge on who you know who's seen it, and if they see like you see.
For $2,500 for the Kickstarter price, would you say it's a good projector?
So >> Granted, we haven't seen it.
>> Here's where Pixel Pusher 15 falls out, and he's one that I do know and I trust.
He's got a unit. He's had it for a couple weeks. He says the anti-RBE mode is not ready for prime time yet, so it's not usable, but but we'll talk about that in a minute.
He says that the hardware the hardware could be disruptive like to the market in general. It's legitimately good hardware, but the software right now is in kind of a rough state. And he would like to see some of the software things fixed. Now, that being said, he's not sure if he has a like a good unit. He's been contacting Jimmy and bringing these things to their attention to see if they think that there's a problem, and they're actually going to replace his unit, cuz they think that there might be problems with his unit.
So if that's the case, then you know, any negatives he has could be washed washed away. And you have some guys that have posted a lot of stuff on the forums that are really high on it. So, I mean, I don't know. I don't know.
Yeah.
Tough to say.
There's Yeah.
There's a lot of people that are saying like if you knew the Valerian Max and they get the software stuff figured out, this will beat the Valerian Max pretty handily.
But the software's not there yet. And like anything else, if you're buying, you probably need to consider whether you think that the company's going to fall through or not. You just I mean, do you know that or not? That's that's the question for you to figure out. I'm not saying one way or the other. I have no idea.
I'm saying it's something to consider.
What's this comment from Big Jack?
I haven't got down that far yet. Big Jack says, "Remember people poo-pooed on the Valerian Max and look at it now."
>> poo-pooed on the Valerian Max, but look at it now.
Um Nah.
The Valerian Max is still, I don't think, up to what how people talk about it now.
I I think the Valerian Max was not really what people were poo-pooing on.
It was the Valerian Pro 2 that people were poo-pooing on more so.
>> the Max, >> [clears throat] >> I think people just need to temper how they speak about it because it's not a JVC killer. It's not I put it on par trading blows with an Epson.
Mhm. They're both better at different things. For the price point, the Valerian Max is a good option. Mhm. But it's it's important, I think, that people just need to not take it as "This projector beats everything" because it doesn't. At least the Valerian Max. I haven't seen the new one.
So, I don't know.
Supposedly, I'm they're sending me one, but who knows when that'll happen. And then to kind of counter that a little bit, Big Jack, my friend [clears throat] Sheldon Karp on the forums said he put a comment in there that was real positive on the Valerian Max cuz we saw it together over at 91 Hybrids house fairly recently and it did put on a good show.
We watched Puss in Boots: The Final Wish and it looked real nice.
And so Sheldon went out there and say that, you know, Valerian had made a nice job on the firmware upgrades like he really liked what he saw.
And and people >> [laughter] >> he said that people were basically attacking him for saying it looked really nice and there was all these issues and stuff and why would he come in there and say it was nice. So it was like he sent me a text saying like, "Oh my, how the winds change, you know?
Originally we were saying the Valerian Pro 2 had some issues that people should be aware of and we were barnstormed and downtrodden because we were saying that there were some issues. Those proved out to be true.
And then now he's coming back and saying, "Hey, the Valerian Max looks real nice." and people are on the other side of the fence saying like, "Hey, it's it's got all these problems. Why you say it's nice?" So it's kind of like I didn't even read the thread. That's just what he had relayed to me. I I just thought >> [laughter] >> uh what a fickle bunch of people on AVS for sure. Yeah.
Oh, well. I'm I'm excited for it cuz I think as Pixel Pusher said, it's disruptive to the industry. Like I'm hoping that it's disruptive. I'm I think it's great for the industry.
It's great to have um competition. It's great to spur innovation. I think that's all fantastic. So I hope it succeeds because it's going to force manufacturers to really think about what they're offering and force development and I'm I'm happy about it. So with the negative things that I say, don't think that I'm trying to crap on it so that it doesn't do well. I just want people to be aware of what they're getting and temper expectations that it is not something I don't think even the Noir is going to be something that's going to replace what a lot of the higher-end projectors do. It's not. But for the money, I think we're raising the bar for what that amount of money gets you in performance, which is important. You get more for your money and it's going to put pressure on the higher end projectors because hey, there's a new player in town and that's that's good.
There was another question about the LS12000 and the 6030.
Okay.
I see that one. I'll pop it up here.
Lewis Holloway says, "Hello, currently running an Epson 6030 and want to upgrade to an LS12000. Good move or something else better in that price range?"
LS12000 is still a solid projector, but I but it's now 4 years old and I have the suspicion based on what I'm This is This is a suspicion and nothing more.
Based on what we saw out of the Valerian Max recently at at John's house and based on the comments that I'm reading from people I trust, including Pixel Pusher, that he thinks that this is a step up from the Valerian Max, like significantly, 1,000 or 2,000 more lumens, dynamic iris, anti-RB is still a thing to consider.
But the Valerian Kickstarter price is three grand and the LS12000 is six grand.
So, there's some weight there to consider and the if the Titan or Max is 4 to 5,000 lumens calibrated and the LS12000 is 2,500 calibrated, you're almost double the brightness on the Titan or Max. It's got good tone mapping from everyone's reports. If they can get some of the software issues figured out, that Titan or Max is a better value than the LS12000. But right now, I think the LS12000 is a better buy than the Nor.
Especially if you're I don't know about that, Ryan, but that's that's fine. I'm not going to say your opinion's wrong, it's your opinion.
But I would say that if you're like you mentioned earlier, it's absolutely true.
If you're worried about rainbows, if you see DLP rainbows, you better watch it closely and keep reading up cuz right now the anti-rainbow technology is not up to not up to snuff on the Titan or Max, apparently. It's Texas Instrument implementation. They're supposed to be working on it. They're actively engaged, but they released several different supposed fixes for it, and so far they have not been fixes.
They broke other things.
>> What I meant is just that there's there's a lot of unknowns with it, and there's a lot of reviewers that are they're talking positively about it and saying it has a lot of potential.
I just don't think the software is mature enough for me to recommend it. I feel like it's got too many issues that people are bringing up, and it's it's more scene dependent than it is "Hey, I can get the best out of it in anything and just leave it in this mode," which I'm never a fan of.
So, if you're not RBE sensitive, I think you can get away with more, but it's as it sits right now, I don't think it's something that I would recommend.
Um as far as bots, at the MSRP price point for the LS12000 against the $3,000 Kickstarter price or whatever it is for the Noir, is that still active or is that closed?
>> Still active for like another couple weeks at that price, I think. I mean, yeah, you are right that that becomes >> Half the price and twice as bright and better blacks than the LS12000, better tone mapping. Like, there's a lot of things to potentially run.
>> There are. Yeah, if you're willing to deal with a few quirks as they sort them out and realize they might not ever sort them out.
There's your There's your teeter-totter.
Figure it out.
>> What? Yeah, I would say that. What I would tell you to do, I can't remember who comment who made that comment. What's his name? I can't read it.
>> Lewis. Lewis, send me a message and we can chat about it, and then I can see if we can get you into something at the right price. Also, if he's considering an LS12000 for $6,000, the NZ500.
>> NZ500 is a better projector than the LS12000 all day. And it is more expensive.
>> of the LS12000. I owned it for 3 years.
I really like that projector. It's a good projector, but the NZ500 is a better projector, period.
In most things, motion, no.
I Yes, I True. There are going to be little characteristics that are going to flip the scale one way or the other, but if I had those two, I would I would just only want the NZ500 pretty much.
>> Yeah, for movies For movies.
>> Yeah, but it is more expensive. But Louis, send me a message. You can go to ascendav.net and there's a contact thing at the bottom and I can at least get you pricing if you're in the US.
And the QUBY 1000, um if it was a couple thousand dollars cheaper, that'd be where I'd recommend if it but it's not.
>> Jason and Rob told me that the QUBY 1000 does not have the blue shift issue that the LS12000 has. I think we kind of saw that in our side-by-side. I mean I don't know that it's universally said to be true that way, but we didn't see that blue shift issue on our QUBY 1000 1000 sample. The QUBY 1000 is in every way better than the LS12000.
Technically. Yeah, I agree. Is it worth the extra $2,000?
I would say no.
They're too close. It's better in every way, but they're too close to recommend the price jump unless you just want There are reasons to buy an LCD based projector and if that's your reason, like it has great motion, it's good for gaming, it's uh nice, tight, and clear. It's a little bit brighter than the JVC.
But there's more reasons I think to buy a JVC right now on that same price point than there is to buy an Epson unless you unless you just have very specific needs, I think.
>> Yeah.
And I And I And I don't say that just generally. I'm not a JVC only guy. You guys know if you've watched the podcast, I was a I preferred the Epson over the NZ7. Like the Epson LS12000 was my preferred projector over the JVC NZ7. I owned them both for 3 years. And I like the LS12000 better. But I think, in my opinion, in my eyes, that that is flipped and I like the JVC better this generation.
Unless you need something with motion.
Yeah.
So, we have a couple more comments. I'm going to go back up a little bit. Ryan asked, "Buckeye Amp is making a 3,000 hertz buzz, so 3 kHz, when plugged in, even if turned off."
Tried pulling the trigger, the antenna off the AVR, each channel, unplugged in different outlets. No luck. Any ideas?
That sounds How could it make it when it's off?
That doesn't [laughter] even make sense.
It's like something out of a a Mothman Prophecy movie or something.
You unplug the phone and You need to contact Dylan.
That sounds like something's grounding and shorting out inside the chassis.
That's the only way that would happen, right? Is if it's off?
I don't know how it happen if it's turned off. It should be I don't know how it could have some sort of voltage coming through the sleep mode or something. I mean, I That doesn't even make sense to me.
>> No.
They don't have sleep modes. They're just an on-off toggle? There's no sleep?
Then that don't make any sense at all.
I don't think so.
Yeah, Ryan, go to Dylan. Dylan's real good.
>> to talk to Dylan.
Um um He always People always say he's real good to work with. Just talk to him and see what he says. He is.
All right. So, Midbass says, "I got the Onkyo TX-SR610 because of your recommendation. Thanks, Jonathan." Good. We were talking a little bit on the side on that.
Hope it doesn't suck.
>> [laughter] >> Prince Drama, he was the one that was asking about um the RS 30 versus the Titan or Max. I'm kind of in love with the Marantz Cinema 50, but is the new Denon 3900 Ah, we should talk about that. The new Denons have been announced. Cinema 50, but the new Denon 930 Denon 3900 better since it's newer or just stick with the Marantz Cinema 50.
So, two things here. Ryan can probably speak to those new Denon models a little bit now that they've been announced.
But, um Denon and Marantz are sister companies.
They're under the same umbrella. And so, if Denon was announced, it won't be long before Marantz will announce their next models. And so, if you have a hankering for one of the other, you could just wait a little bit. Okay, Ryan, do you want to speak on the Denon stuff? I don't know of any changes did they make? I think there's some HDMI changes.
Uh as far as I know, the couple things that you and I kind of talked about in the background a little bit were that they they seem kind of light changes to be frank, at least in this models that they've talked about. They now allow AMD FreeSync to pass. Yes.
>> up to 144 hertz.
They have a This is a going to be a bigger one.
It's called ceiling channel expander or Atmos expander or something like that.
Do you remember the actual name, Ryan?
>> No.
Okay, so we've talked about this before in the channel, but there is Atmos content, like source content that's mixed hard to like 9.x.2.
So, it's mixed to two ceiling channels.
It doesn't have objects in the ceiling.
It's just hard mixed to two.
And if you have a if you have a 9.1.6, if you have six ceiling speakers, and you're playing source content that's hard set to 9.1.2, it's only going to play those that ceiling content out of the two middle speakers. And so, your front ceiling and your back ceiling are going to do nothing. Now, that's not very fantastic because like in my room, I have six channels and the middle row, if I can I'll go up a little bit and show you.
Of course this thing's not paying attention to me now.
Just bring it up. So here's my front, here's my center, here's my rear.
My center is right over the middle of my footpath for my rear row.
And so if it's only playing out of there then the front the front channels are the the front seats are getting all the ceiling channel originating from behind me and that's not ideal.
The channel expander takes where it's locked into that center channel and expands it over four or expands it over all six so they all get duplicated content if you will. And that kind of fills up your ceiling space and makes it more even. That seems like a real simple thing that somebody should have already done. It feels like something they could retrofit to the older models but they probably won't because it's a way to differentiate these products. Yeah.
That's a really cool feature if that matters to you. Mhm.
Great. I don't think there's two terribly much of a price difference right now.
Unless manufacturers are vendors are putting them on sale but from a advertised price for me um they have they haven't changed very much. The MSRP value is like a hundred to a hundred fifty dollars different between them. I think the price on the 3900 went up like a hundred bucks.
I'd have to look at it the price list again.
But if unless you need that or there are HDMI changes I don't think I'd worry about it anything. Now let's compare Denon against the Marantz. So pause for a second before we go on cuz there's one more thing. They did upgrade the HEOS. I think it allows more than two channel now. There's an it's like a it's like a uh upgrade to HEOS. And then there's guys talking in the chat that also has better DACs. I I Guys in the chat, I don't get very excited about better DACs. All these DACs, including the 3800, are already above guaranteed already above your human hearing thresholds. So, don't get too excited about that, but you know, if they put new tech in there and it measures better then then that makes you happy, go ahead for it, but you won't hear it.
All right. So, now your Marantz discussion.
Yeah.
Do you think would you ever unless there was a feature reason, would you ever buy a Marantz over a Denon?
So, I mean, if you I'm not one that advocates that pre-pros have a different sound or a better sound than an AVR, especially when in pure mode, because as long as your cables are short and your RCA cables are not more than like two or three feet, you're not going to know the difference. The noise floor is not going to be different. The The SINAD scores have been proven by ASR objectively on the bench to be almost identical and they're all above human threshold hearing anyway.
Marantz has the HDAM modules that change the sound to like a house sound that you can turn on or turn off. It actually is like a distortion box. It just adds a little bit of distortion and people like it. It also rolls off the high frequencies a little bit, kind of makes it a little bit warmer sound, but it's a minimal change and you can do that with You can do that with your your DSP or with your Audyssey EQ with some tailored customizations. All that's can do be done manually.
So, in answer your question, they have a different chassis.
The The days of Marantz having this mythical like, if you like music, pick a Marantz, that's that's been proven not true.
Um Uh Marantz has a better remote.
>> [laughter] >> It That Okay, that is true.
That is true. Marantz's remote is much better, but unless there is a feature option or something reason I don't think there's any reason to get a Marantz.
Now, something like an AV10 where it only exists in the Marantz line, sure.
But other than that, I don't see the value.
There's been teardowns where people have traced like the chips, the contents, the the structure of the units and found out that they were like identical to the H the AM modules which were unique on the Marantz, but then most people anymore that have the HDM options that I know, I mean, you don't have to and if you enjoy it, turn it on, but most people just turn it off because it's tampering with the original sound and they want it to be the original sound. Yeah, so if I were your you I would just get a 3900. Save your money, don't get the Cinema 50, spend that money on acoustic treatments or more subs.
And if you're in the US and need a 3900 let me know, maybe we can make something happen.
Help you out.
I'm reading through here.
>> [laughter] >> All right, here's one. I bought my Buckeye NC252 thinking it was 250 watts, but Hypex spec sheet can indicate it's only 50 watts continuous. Dillis also can Dylan also confirmed. Most specs on searches and websites have it wrong as continuous.
Yeah, this was talked about a while ago.
And I think that is important, but it's also important that most of your sound output is going to be burst.
Would you agree? Like you're not going to hold I think that's true for most amps, really.
Hm? Like how long does it How long does it hold the burst? Is it like milliseconds or is it 4 seconds or what do you know? Do we know like I haven't read that. I don't know the story. I don't know. I've never heard that it was actually 50 watts, but that doesn't mean that he's wrong. I've never I don't know.
So Most amplifiers are rated on a peak power just generally speaking and they don't hold it, but 50 is kind of low compared to 250 if that's what it's spec sheet indicates. Like that's kind of a big drop. A lot of times it's more like 50% instead of 80% >> Yeah, I don't have a lot of information on this.
I can ask Dylan.
Yeah. I mean here's the thing.
I don't have any idea what this is what this is. I haven't seen the bench test on this. I don't I haven't read this. If it's something like it holds it for 4 seconds and then it drops to 50 watts, you don't care. You legitimately don't care because nothing's going to be driving it like that.
These things when they like you're basically asking it to weld and it's not doing that. It's driving a dynamic load that changes a lot based on peaks and and and like the way a music note is written. Um like a score or whatever. It's not just a solid continuous sine wave. And so it just probably doesn't matter at the end of the day. Yeah, it's not a square wave, so you're not worried about that, but one thing you should be cognizant about is heat and if you're playing things really loud and even if the amplifier can deal with that over x amount of time for burst it's important to check to make sure that it's able to dissipate that amount of heat if it happens repeatedly because eventually if it happens enough and there's not adequate heat removal in whatever chassis and this is not I'm not picking on Buckeye here.
It's just in general. If there's not adequate heat dissipation, eventually you're going to run into a bad time.
Couple people have asked about Mwave, and this comment specifically is addressed to Mwave by Steven. We need an Jimmy Titan War Max at Mwave. That'd be a good time to evaluate it post-product launch.
>> It would be. It would be. So, I have a meeting with somebody on Monday about a location. It's been a pain in the butt to find a location outside of the Kansas City Convention Center.
Everybody's got stuff going on.
Um but I think I've got a location for a few rooms, cuz that's all we need.
Um so, hopefully I'll have more information next week. Have a meeting with them on Monday.
And you probably are going to get one of these projectors, and there's three guys in Kansas City that are buying one.
>> Yeah, they'll be there. So, we'll we'll be able to have that covered, I think.
Okay, so I mean, we're having multiple people talk talk about this LS9000 and why we don't think it's in the conversation.
Is that dated back? I mean, I wasn't reading in real time. I wonder if that's dated back before we talked about it, or are they still saying that should be part of the conversation?
Cuz I I I just I think the LS9000 at $4,000 is not recommended. Like I there's zero way, unless we had a bad sample, there's no way I recommend that projector. I just don't recommend it at all.
I don't think we had a bad sample.
I'd rather have a 6050 or a 5050 over that.
I'd rather have a used Epson at that point than than that. I thought LS9000 was un- No Epson if you're listening, Epson corporate, that projector should not exist. It shouldn't >> Okay, but let's remember that we're we're maybe not their target market.
Well, who is their target market? I don't know, people in big box stores.
>> projector, it's still an enthusiast product. I know. I'm just saying that in a in a way we are a little jaded, so our expectations of things are one way.
I'm not I'm putting another perspective on this. I don't like it, but I'm looking at this of do I not like it because of what my other experiences are? And if you jump up to the LS12000, I mean, that's still a 33% price increase to go to the LS12000.
So, is that worth it to a lot of people? I don't know.
I I I can't think of a single use case.
Truly, not a single use case I'd recommend that projector for.
I'm Okay, if you're going to like pin my fingernails down and rip them off, I don't give you one. Maybe in a bar where you I have ambient light and you're never going to be able to >> [laughter] >> You're never going to be able to see the black floor anyway, cuz you have have lights. Hey, I'm in full agreement with you. I'm simply providing another perspective to this of maybe that's why it exists and they're trying to give it >> marketing it as a home theater projector, not a a built a bar and grill home theater, you know, a corporate projector. It's just not a home theater projector. The blacks are too bad.
So, I I'm coming across strong because I feel strongly about it. Like I was really disappointed by that one.
And I And again, I love the LS12000.
Like it's a great model. The LS9000 is not is not there.
Okay, fair.
Okay, so Terminator Juice says, there's an electric wire near a speaker in this setup. Oh, he's talking about the the Buckeye amp. What they had the 3000 hertz hum. I had a buzz coming from my height channel and it turned out to be that it was a near a wire going to my ceiling lights.
Oh, yeah.
There can be electrical interference that comes from wiring running too close together, especially with signal wire.
Especially with dimmers.
For sure, that's an excellent point.
Another comment in here saying that Dylan's a great resource. Go ahead and check with him. He took care of him in had a problem he had, that kind of stuff. So, that's what we've always heard is that Dylan's real great to work with.
Or at least what I've always heard. No, he is.
Scrolling down, scrolling down.
Tremendous Juice has a couple comments in here about Dolby Digital 5.1 having better bass than a remastered Atmos 7.1 mix. We talked about this a little bit last podcast, actually. With the War of the Worlds soundtrack, they neutered all the bass. So, we won't revisit it cuz we spent time on it last time.
But, they neutered all the bass out of the Dolby Atmos track. And that's one of the all-star, top-tier, super track, uh, you know, bass I think a lot of this goes back to loudness wars and dynamic range and remasterings. And I feel like a lot of it is people turning a part of it is it things just getting turned up. And you're clipping. But, in the sense of War of the Worlds, it's just gone. It's not there.
So, I don't necessarily think there's anything about the format that makes it better, though I I don't know the technical sides of it.
I do think it is just that it was mastered that way. I think you could have it on both. It's just Oh, yeah. mastered that way. And we have examples of where it is really hot and intense and deep and something like that, uh, Blade Runner 2049. Seven when it has the submarine rolling.
There's some really deep stuff in there.
The Blade Runner 2049 is great. Yes.
There's There's It's not a limitation of the format. It's a choice or or inattention of the mixer. Yes.
Okay, so anyone see the BOE cog display at Display Week? This is what all the TVs and LED walls will be made of in the future. I did not. Do you know about that?
>> No, I do not.
MW, tell us more.
Okay, so someone we're we're circling around that 3900 quite a lot. There's apparently two more amplified channels, newer DAC, AMD free sync 144 hertz, Atmos channel expander, and that's the majority of it, I think.
Yep. We addressed that a while ago, at least Jonathan did. But so if if you don't need those features, save some money, get a sale 3800. If you do want those features, 3900. I think the amplifiers and the audio sides of things will be near identical outside of the DACs, but I I don't think you're going to hear that difference.
Another prop for Mark Wilson about Buckeye, saying that they're good to work with.
Okay, so then Tom's saying, "Hey Google Hypex spec sheet for actual specs. Don't explain it very well. There's no real concern other than understanding what the numbers represent."
And I think that goes back to what we were saying and what Big Jack's saying here, um, in the sense that music and movies is not like a continuous sine wave. And so that long-term testing is usually done on a continuous sine wave, and it's not representative of what real-world content is.
Yeah.
>> isn't. I mean, that's not a that's not to like explain it away or give them a pass. It just isn't. And so it won't it won't represent like that.
Well, that's all. We're caught up on all the questions.
That's actually perfect timing. It's my son's about ready to walk out of practice, so I get to take him home. And hopefully next week I will have watched whatever we're going to watch, maybe, and talk about it more in depth, and be an actual contributor to this stream, instead of just riding Jonathan's coattails.
>> [laughter] >> Off camera.
All right, MW came back with a little bit more on that Cog Bio display.
Uh it's one of the first active matrix screens that can go to small pixel pitch micro LED TV size. No flicker. Can go to 22 bits. 22 bits?
Mhm.
Aren't we still at like 10 and 12 bits?
How are we getting up to 22 bits?
I'd need to look at what it is and see what it >> Strident computer Yamaha came out with entry-level receivers and they are ugly.
They fell out of the ugly tree and hit You and Tim were talking about that and then who had the good looking one?
Onkyo? Onkyo had the good looking entry-level. Uh I don't even know what's entry-level. That's kind of expensive stuff. I'm just imagining you and Tim just sitting on the floor, movies on and you're just staring at the AVR.
>> [laughter] >> This thing is so ugly. I can't believe I bought it. It doesn't even look good.
What? It's behind a cabinet door. I can't believe how ugly this thing is. I mean No, you saw the picture the ugly I did see a picture. It's not the prettiest thing in the world. It was, you know, maybe fell out of a nest out of the tree and then was hit by a 2 by 4 on the way down. But it >> [laughter] >> as long as it delivers, it's okay.
I don't know. I It's almost like comical how ugly they made it. Like what were they thinking? Yes, but then buy buy Marantz over Denon.
Cuz Marantz is better looking than the Denon, but it's more expensive.
>> goes a long way.
I don't know how to find that picture in short order. It's floating around somewhere. We were laughing at it in our group text. Yeah.
Okay, we'll wrap it up. Do you got a quick recommendation on movies?
No, I don't. Chat, help us out. Give us a recommendation. Quickly.
Uh how about are you going to watch that?
You want something animated?
I don't mind the animated. Swapped.
What? What are you saying?
Swapped.
>> [laughter] >> Is that a >> No.
S W A P E D. Swapped.
>> Oh, I never heard of that. Okay, fine.
You can watch it with your kids.
All right, sounds good.
>> I watched it with my partner I'll watch it again. I got to watch it in the theater.
It's got some pretty good visuals.
There's a lot of color. So um I don't know how great of a movie it is, but it's we haven't watched anything animated in a while. I do want to watch Project Hail Mary, but it's still $40 on K scape and I ain't spending that.
I know, I I understand.
Oh, Terminator Juice says the Spider-Man movies Spider-Verse movies are fantastic, but I First one is much better than the second one. Yeah.
I owe the second one a second watch though. I didn't like it as much, but I would like to watch it again.
>> I do too and I also owe Romulus a second watch. Oh, I really like that one. Yeah, I didn't and I need to rewatch it maybe and not be comparing it to Alien.
But well, we'll see.
Project Hail Mary will be down the road a little bit when it's not so expensive.
They have the early early bird tax on it right now. Yeah, I want to watch it.
But Give me time to District 9's playing District 9's been out for like 20 years.
>> [laughter] >> What are you talking about with spoilers? It's your own fault.
>> [laughter] >> When did that even come out? That'd be like 2010 or something.
Uh what I I didn't give much time between the reveal and the spoiler. In fact, I might have say either, but it's Come on, guys. It's been out for god knows how long and When did it come out? District 9.
2009. 17, 18 years ago.
>> [laughter] >> And you're complaining about spoilers.
Guys, the time for spoilers is well past.
That's funny.
>> Well past. But let's do Swapped. I think it's the cast is really good. Um It's got an interesting story. It's a little different.
So, let's do that one.
All right, fellas. Thanks for joining [snorts] us on the stream tonight. We'll catch you next time.
I'll be on time this time and so will Jonathan.
Whenever we do it.
>> [laughter] >> Okay. Do you ever Hold on. Before we wrap this up, do you ever feel like the Car Talk Car Talk guys? Yeah, a little bit. Like that.
>> [laughter] >> We're like the Car Talk guys of audio.
Don't [laughter] drive like my brother.
Yeah.
>> Okay. Let's wrap this up before we go down any other tangents and and rabbit holes. But thanks for joining us everybody. Thanks for putting up with me not having a good face and my audio being terrible.
