Police charge Prince George's County shooting spree shooter with 66 offenses

[00:00:01]Right now in the news at 11:00, we're taking a look at new video of the man accused of going on a shooting spree across Prince George's [music] County, spreading fear and chaos. Now, police are charging that man [music] with 66 offenses, including first-degree attempted murder as well as second-degree attempted [music] murder as well. Thanks for joining us on the news at 11:00. I'm Larry Miller. Police say that 68-year-old Larry James Simpson [music] terrorized residents across multiple communities, injuring two people along the way. Sarah Robinson [music] spoke with witnesses and has reaction to the charges. We are at just one of five scenes that was impacted by the violence yesterday. This one is on 67th and Patterson. You can see this crime scene tape here behind me. Just one day after the shooting, that's really all that's left of the scene. But, for the people who witnessed the violence, they say it is not something they'll soon forget.

[00:00:52]>> No, I'm so sad that this is right across the street from a school. Sandra Martinez is recalling the horrifying moment she witnessed Friday afternoon.

[00:01:00]And we heard the pop, we all There were three of us in the office and we were like, "What was that?"

[00:01:05]>> She was at work when she saw a man with a rifle across the street. Martinez says he had just carjacked someone and fired shots. And my body just got chills. The man she saw with the rifle, police have now identified as 68-year-old Larry Simpson. He has now been charged with 66 offenses, including 16 counts of attempted first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted second-degree murder. Being in front of a school with a person, you know, with a suspect with the rifle, we thought the worst. Prince George's County police say Simpson tormented people across five different locations before he was taken into custody. Police credit an off-duty Prince George's County officer who witnessed one of the carjackings and followed Simpson. That officer called his wife, who was also a Prince George's County police officer, allowing the two to help track Simpson in real time until other officers moved in and made the arrest.

[00:01:57]>> He just carjacked these people. It was just you know, it was just like you don't know. You don't know what to do at that moment. And again, like my first instinct was trying to protect the victims. Simpson injured two people during the rampage and sent nearby schools into a lockdown. Both victims are expected to survive. Martinez says she's grateful no one was killed. It was just a wild scene.
