Violent shaking from 6.0 earthquake damages Hawaii Island homes, rattles residentsAdded:
Residents are cleaning up and making repairs after last night's magnitude 6.0 earthquake rocked the island of Hawaii damaging homes, triggering rock slides, and knocking out power across parts of South Kona. Our Raquel Calvo reports.
Video sent to Hawaii News Now captures the terrifying moment when the earthquake ripped through Randy Huli's Chicken and Ribs warehouse in Kailua-Kona. It shook the building sending shelves crashing down and people scrambling for safety.
It was a um a hard jerk and then it sounded like a bomb went off. Randy Morris says his warehouse had only minor damage but at his daughter's home the quake shifted the entire house off its foundation.
It was just like I was on one of those um carnival rides that like jerk your body and you can't really like your body can't keep up with it. It just sounded like the whole house exploded.
>> As a home cracked apart Asia Morris Silfly says her first thought was getting her children out safely.
>> And then my mom tried to scoop me out of bed and then I tried to go back and then I fell into a crack in the deck.
And my leg slipped right through. The deck split in half. The house is on the ground. It jumped off of the foundation.
Um the walls are cracked. Um the toilet is misplaced in the bathroom. Other Hawaii Island residents also reported damages from the force of the quake. The tank was just a little bit tilted. Then in the middle of the night we had a aftershock >> [snorts] >> and then it woke us up cuz the whole tank fell and hit the house and was dumping out the water and it woke us up cuz we my bed's right behind that. Even visitors on the island say the aggressive shaking caught them completely off guard. I came here my birthday party and it's starting already with a bang.
All the pictures that you see fell off the wall, the mirror with all the shelves broken in three pieces, the stand fell on the floor, and the the room was just going back and forth and I I could feel it. I felt like, "Oh my god, this is what's happening?" Back on Oahu, some residents say they felt light shaking, but nothing compared to conditions on Hawaii Island.
I didn't feel it. I'm sure it's it wasn't as big of an impact as Big Island, so hopefully everyone is okay over there.
>> Uh I was sleeping, but my wife was awake and my daughter was awake and they just experienced the windows vibrating for about a minute. Thought it was just a loud car driving by with their sound system and then when they had, you know, after about like 10 seconds they were like, "It's still vibrating." As families across Hawaii Island begin cleaning up and recovering from Friday night's earthquake, county officials say damage assessments are still ongoing as crews respond to more reports coming in from around the island.
