Strong thunderstorms and heavy downpours sweep across central and northeastern Pennsylvania追加:
Meteorologist Jeremy Lewan in the severe weather center talking about the storms tonight. Jeremy, >> hey Scott. This is the first time so far this year that I've had to come inside as a result of severe thunderstorms. And I'm sure it won't be the last. We have a pretty substantial line of showers and thunderstorms rolling through the region right now. Not enough to call it a severe thunderstorm in parts of the northern tier, but the National Weather Service has issued this special weather statement until 8:15. Anywhere you see that shaded tan color right here for most of Suscoana County and part of Wayne County, that's where we'll see wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. Also the chance for some pe-sized hail. Now the severe thunderstorm warning here for parts of southern North umberland county, also northwestern Skookul County. This will expire now. Just expired at 7:45. Uh but nonetheless, it's still packing some pretty strong winds. It's just that risk for quarter sized hail has dwindled. So here's the big line of showers and thunderstorms.
It ripped through central Pennsylvania.
A lot of lightning strikes through uh Potter and Tyogga counties, Bradford County, too. Now it's starting to lose some of its steam steam, but still enough to cause lightning thunder here in our backyard. I heard it before I came into the studio right overhead WNEP. And it's knocking on the doorstep of Scranton at this point. Same for parts of the Suscuana Valley. It's knocking on the doorstep of Pottsville and Bloomsburg. So I want to zoom in tight on the cell that did have that severe thunderstorm tag. Notice the pink shading. That's really heavy rain, downpour activity. So, if you live in Kulpmont, you'll see it around 7:52. Any part of North umberland County will see heavier downpours within the next uh 10 minutes or so. And notice it still has the hail attributes indicating that there is maybe a chance for some P-sized hail, but not that quarter sized hail the National Weather Service was seeing inside the cloud earlier. So, if you live in any of these cities, you'll be seeing it very soon, too. Nanakoke by just before 8 o'clock, Scranton at 8 o'clock, on the dot, Honesdale by about 8:30, Blooming Grove by 8:45, and Jim Thorp just before 9:00. It'll exit eastern Pennsylvania, points east, Pike County, Wayne County probably around 11:30 tonight. Right now, we're in the warm sector of the rain showers. Uh right before the cold front sweeps through, we get a bit of a surge in temperatures. So, we were near 70° today, but behind it, notice the colder air will start to pull in. And tomorrow our high temperature will be lucky if we hit 57 58 degrees. Today we topped out at 67 for both Scranton and Williamsport. That is still below average. Normal high temperature 72 degrees. And notice how temperatures are falling where the cold front has already sweeped through in the 40s for the northern tier. Weoxocks, look at that.
You have not seen the cold front just yet. You're at 65. Bear Creek Township at 59, 60 in Lake Harmony. And Sailorsburg currently sitting at 67.
That cold front's going to sweep through and cool things down substantially. This is a live shot at Bucknell University in Lewisburg. Notice the clouds pretty thick overhead and the rain showers coming down. And this dramatic scene from our rooftop camera, the shelf cloud, which is the leading edge of the storm pushing across I 81 and now headed towards the east. Rain showers heavy right now over the airport. This is AVP.
You can see the strip uh for the airport there. Current temperature right now 57 degrees. We have variable winds of four.
Yes, it was a breezy day today. Gusts up to 15, 25, even 30 mph. I think as we head into the weekend, winds will quell and we'll start to calm down after midnight. We do have that risk for thunderstorms up until midnight though.
Low temperature tonight, 48 degrees. If you live in the mountains, you could get down in the low 40s, but no risk for frost or freeze at all tonight. There are your rainfall amounts from the uh cold front that's passing through.
Anywhere from a quarter inch to about a/ inch. Again, if you live in any of those locations that are experiencing especially heavy downpours, southern North umberland county, parts of Skookul County, you could close in on a half inch in a short period of time. So, watch out for some ponding on roadways if you're driving tonight. Cold front sweeps through within the next 2 to three hours. 10:30, it's pushing through Wayne and Pike counties. 11:00 it should be out. Here's the picture at 1:00 am already starting to dry out. Tomorrow though, we hold on to the cloud cover.
The actual low pressure system is going to swirl on by Pennsylvania and bring in some clouds and some possible sprinkles for your Thursday. I'd say most of us will remain dry, but we could see an isolated sprinkle out there. Most of us are just going to see the cloud cover throughout your entire Thursday. The cloud cover lingers through Friday morning, maybe an additional sprinkle around your morning commute on Friday.
And we finally clear out to good sunshine later in the day on Friday.
Here's a sneak peek at your weekend weather forecast. Both days quite warm temperatures near 80° both days about a mix of sun and clouds, but there is a chance for an isolated shower mostly on Saturday evening and on Sunday morning.
There's a look at your 7-day forecast.
Tomorrow will be the coldest day of the next seven in the upper 50s, but we slowly rise to the 80°ree mark by the weekend. We hold on to the 80s, Scott, all the way through this upcoming week.
Looks like we're going to be warm possibly until the end of May. That's what we like to hear.
>> Yes, especially as we approach Memorial Day. We'll see you tonight, Jeremy.
