A compass needle's north end is actually attracted to Earth's magnetic south pole, not true geographic north; Earth's liquid iron outer core generates the magnetic field that causes this attraction, and the difference between magnetic north and true north (called declination) requires correction for accurate navigation.

The Compass Is Chasing the Wrong North | MindSnapAdded:
North is not the target of a compass needle. The needle is chasing magnetic South hidden inside Earth's magnetic field. Inside the compass, a magnetized needle hangs on nearly frictionless support. Earth's liquid outer core keeps moving and that motion generates the magnetic field. The field tugs the needle into alignment so the needle rotates until forces balance. That does not mean true North at all. True North is the geographic pole. Magnetic North is a separate drifting target. The gap between them is called declination and pilots, sailors, and surveyors correct for it. Here is the twist. The North end of the needle is named for where it wants to go. It is actually attracted toward the moving magnetic pole near the Arctic which is why a compass always points North.
