[00:00:03]On this exact day in 1948, three things happened simultaneously that changed the Middle East forever.

[00:00:10]Israel had declared independence just 14 days earlier. Five Arab armies had already invaded and on May 28th, the old city of Jerusalem was falling. 340 Jewish soldiers surrendered to the Jordanian Arab Legion after weeks of siege. 2,300 Jewish civilians fled for their lives. The Jewish quarter gone.

[00:00:32]But on the same day, something else was being built. Israel's provisional government signed a single order that unified every Jewish militia into one fighting force. Hagana, Irun, Stern Gang, all of them merged into the Israel Defense Forces. The IDF born on the same day Jerusalem's old city was lost. And that same morning, Israeli forces attacked the Jordanian fortress at Latrun, trying to break the siege of Jerusalem. They failed.
