Biopics about extraordinary individuals face inherent challenges in balancing comprehensive storytelling with narrative constraints, as the vast amount of material to cover often necessitates surface-level treatment of events, even when filmmakers aim for depth and authenticity.

Michael | Movie ReviewAdded:
[music] >> It's been out for a hot, hot, hot minute. It's taken me over 2 weeks to catch in cinemas, but I've finally seen the MJ biopic. It's called Michael, so let's talk about it.
Hey, welcome back to video, a brand new movie review. Today I'm talking about the thrill ing Michael movie. I was really trying to think of a Michael pun.
That was the best I could do. Michael, it's in cinemas across the UK right now.
Before we start talking about it, as always, a friendly reminder, these are just my thoughts. Don't let this dictate whether or not you go and see it. You might see it a little bit different to me. That is okay. Movies are made to cater for everyone. Without further ado, let's start talking about Michael, and I really, really enjoyed this film.
I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about it, uh as have you probably by now, because this movie review is so late, but I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about it, and I was really kind of apprehensive, cuz I was really, really excited for this film.
Uh and I found out a little while before that this was going to be a two-part film. I didn't I didn't know that.
Um and I wasn't disappointed. I really enjoyed this film, and I disagree with a lot of these negative reviews. I can see where a lot of these reviews are coming from in the sense that when when we compare this biopic to other musicians biopics, something like Bohemian Rhapsody, something like Rocketman that cover like Queen, Freddie Mercury, and like Elton John, they do have quite in-depth stories and plots. The same with something like Bob Marley: One Love. You know, they they're all quite in-depth.
And this one, I don't feel like is.
The problem with this is Michael Jackson has such has had such a almost movie-like life that there is so much they could talk about. The whole Pepsi scene and kind of chunk of this film could have like been a 2-hour chunk in itself. Do you know what I mean? So, they have to kind of pick and choose what they go into. There are sections of this film and sections of his life that he can't they can't talk about for legal reasons. Like legally, contractually, they're not allowed to put certain people and mention certain things into this movie. Uh but you know, they kind of have to pick and choose what they talk about in much more detail than others. And it makes sense because there's just so much to talk about. Hence why they're making a second film.
But I will totally agree in the sense that this does sort of feel like it's skimming the surface on everything that happened in his life. There's nothing really that they go too much into depth with. The whole thing with his father, again, we saw a lot of it, but again, I felt like it was all very surface level.
We never really kind of got to the nitty-gritty in terms of what was happening with his father.
And I just feel like a lot of it was very safe in the way that they portrayed it. Which obviously you're going to because you don't really want to highlight the negatives because you're making a movie celebrating Michael Jackson's life that's being played by his nephew. So, naturally, you're not going to highlight all the things that he's done and the sections of his life because this is all supposed to be a celebratory film. So, why are you going to highlight the negative stuff? Having said that though, you have still got to bring it up because this is part of his life. If you want to stay true to his life, you've got to talk about those sections of his life and bring it into this biopic. However, like I continue to say, it did feel very surface level and a lot of it felt very safe in a way to kind of not highlight all of the flaws, if that makes sense. I'm excited to see part two, kind of see where they go with it cuz there's still like a huge, huge chunk of his life. The whole Jackson 5 era could be a film within itself. Like this could be like a five-part film if they wanted to make it.
Uh but you can't do that. Do you know what I mean? Like you just can't make a five-part film about it. So, yeah, that's kind of what I see with these other reviews and what I kind of did feel at the same same time when I went to go and see it. But, I also agree with some of the reviews talking about it. If you are just looking for a film that's about Michael, that's like a big compilation of all of his best songs, then yeah, you're going to get that as well. But, if you also don't really know as much about Michael as kind of you think you do or you want to know, then this is also a great film and a great opportunity to kind of understand a little bit more about Michael Jackson. I kind of knew that he had a bit of an obsession with a monkey. I didn't know quite the extremes when it comes to things like giraffes and alpacas or llamas or whatever it was. Like I didn't quite know that. Do you know what I mean? So, yeah, it was it was good. I really really enjoyed it. I thought the cinematography was absolutely extraordinary. I thought the acting was brilliant. The way that Jaafar had to really work on himself and kind of study MJ to make it so realistic, I thought was absolutely so admirable because he did such a cracking job and his performance as Michael Jackson was phenomenal. As was the young Michael.
Like as was everyone playing in the film. Michael's dad, the actor that played him was sensational. It was a really good film. I enjoyed it and it is definitely one of my favorite biopics in a long time. I would argue that very, very much so.
Do I feel like I've been overly negative in terms of agreeing with these reviews of like people complaining that it's very surface level? Yes, I do. And I do want to just kind of confirm that while I agree with it, I think it works and I don't feel like they could do anything but be surface level because there is just so much to talk about. So, that's Yeah, I I was just sort of pondering over the fact that I've been very negative and very critical, but I think that the way that they did this film was absolutely spot on because they couldn't They have to be surface level because there is so much to talk about. So, I agree with all of these surface level reviews, but how else you going to do this film and cover the life of somebody so extraordinary as Michael Jackson? Do you know what I mean? So, yeah, very excited part two. I have no knowledge of when this is going to come out. Is it done? I don't know.
Is it like a wicked scenario where it'll come out exactly a year on? Who knows, but I'm very excited to see this conclusion of this film and kind of almost learn about the rest of Michael Jackson's life. So, yeah, very good. I enjoyed it. Michael is in cinemas across the UK right now. As always, before I wrap up this movie review, what do I rate it out of 10? Will it join my collection? I'm giving this a solid eight out of 10. Very enjoyed it.
Excited for the second part. Will it join my collection? Most certainly it will. I'm very excited to have this join my collection. Hopefully, later on in the year to join my actually sort of It's beginning to grow my musician biopic collection. I've got Bohemian Rhapsody, Back to Black, I've got the Whitney Houston one, Rocketman.
So, we've got We've got a fair few.
Michael will be the next one to join my collection. So, yeah, very excited for that. As always, in the description below is the movie plot, a link to the movie trailer, as well as a link to my movie review playlist. It features every single movie review that I've ever done.
More to come soon. Other than that, thank you very much for watching, and I shall see you in another video, and hopefully one of those movie reviews very soon.
