Navotas Sanitary Landfill declared fire out yesterday after a month of firefighting efforts

[00:00:08]And so, a joint ocular by the DPWH and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources was paid earlier today at the site to determine the areas for thermal scanning and rehabilitation. RJ M. Thompson has more on the continued soil pile up on certain areas and holding the current site operator to sustain site rehabilitation. [music] After a month of fighting the fire at the Navotas sanitary landfill, the sky is now clear and visible after it was declared fire out yesterday. Through the collaboration of various government agencies and several private sectors, the extinguishing of the fire which greatly affected neighboring areas due to the smoke from the landfill was expedited. To recall, due to the lack of site closure plan and rehabilitation of the landfill, the former owner allegedly left it in neglect. It is said that since August of last year, the landfill has been non- operational after their franchise expired. But, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Juan Miguel Cu insists This is it is their obligation that they had committed to under the ECC. Due to the damage caused by the fire, the quality of air and water was affected not only in Navotas, but also in its neighboring areas. Because of this, the agency will not allow those proven to have abandoned the landfill to escape accountability.

[00:01:30]and with the Solicitor General's office for And right now uh that they've gotten including my Meanwhile, the Navotas sanitary landfill was personally inspected today by various agencies including the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Transportation, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and other agencies and private sectors that helped extinguish the fire. DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon assured that even though the fire and smoke are gone, their monitoring of the landfill continues in which thermal scanning will still go on to determine if any hotspots remain.

[00:02:43]Clearly, there is no more smoke coming from beneath the stretch of the Navotas Sanitary Landfill as a result of all the soil piled up on the smoldering areas over the last few weeks.
