When pruning large oak tree limbs near houses, workers should use speedline straps to create controlled hinges, cut from the top down to prevent dangerous swinging, and always wear tethered harnesses as an OSHA requirement for working from lifts or bucket trucks.

Pruning a large oak tree that is on 2 housesAdded:
We got to get you out of the camera up in the lift here and Gabe, you with me?
Gabe and I are working on a pretty major pruning job. This tree and you see that big limb down there?
That's a stub. I'm going to cut that stub off in a minute when I get over here.
And then that other limb right there, they both came all the way out and were actually touching this roof right here.
These are the people that we're working for. That tree over there on the other side of the wheelchair ramp was uh those limbs were touching that roof over there on that gable.
We got all of that off.
We got stuff piled here, piled over there. So Gabe and I are working this back off the neighbor's house now.
We just worked two forks out.
Right here, it's almost lunchtime. We're just kind of uh getting this getting these taken off and working through it, but fixing to reposition, reset up, make another cut. I Those right there, I can just drop them, can't I, Gabe?
That'd be close. We might I might make a big cut.
Yeah.
Yeah. What my luck would be it would come down and hit one of the sticks down there and you know what is going to happen then, it's going straight through that wooden fence, so we'll err on the side of caution. It take take 30 seconds longer to not have to deal with fixing a fence today.
Yeah.
We We got too good of a rhythm going right now to start destroying stuff.
Yeah, man. Yeah.
Yeah, I'll make one more good cut.
>> And then it's like you get both forks in there.
And then I'll be in the clear there.
So I use I'll use my speedline straps a lot of times in this situation because the way I'm going to cut this, I'm not going to cut it where it drops in it and and loads it like in a negative rig.
I'm just going to cut it from the straight from the top down and let it peel.
That way it hinges over real slow. Now they they, you know, all the guidelines, they want you to notch it and make a hinge on it, but I don't necessarily agree with that all the time. I mean, each each situation requires its own different.
But you'll see here I'm going to take this whole fork out.
I'm ready to go.
I'm going to take this whole fork and I'm going to cut it right here.
And we'll start from the top.
And you see this it's not giant or anything, but it's going like gradually go down and then I'll let it load into the rigging. You'll see.
That way it don't get to swinging and doing stupid stuff, too.
And [screaming] this one I'm going to cut it from the top.
Kind of work it.
Basically just like I'm making a hinge on it.
See it starting to go.
And then we'll expect some fibers on it.
>> [screaming] >> Sometimes they'll slip, turn, and they'll hang, but that kept it. You see how much it swung just on that? That kept it from like really going crazy on me right there. Okay, you can just lower it down real easy, unhook it, and then I'll be ready to make another cut.
If you'll take and pull the end of that thing around a little bit where it's laying right there, like pull the top out, I think I'll drop these next few pieces. I'll cut a couple pieces and just let them drop straight down and they'll hit that ground and then they'll be all right.
One thing about it, man, you may have clearance down there, but if you got something down there a chunk can hit, man, it like it like goes in the like warp speed effect, and if they something there it can hit it, it's going to hit it and it's going to go through it. It would uh Like these pieces here I'm fixing to cut, they would have no trouble going slam through that wooden fence right there.
I'll get this cut back gauge and we'll we'll go drop that shorter up there I'll go get some knee.
Okay. All right. Well, I'm going to cut it and let it go straight down.
See, it just like it landed. See, it still rolled over toward the fence over there.
Concrete I did it same thing only two on a gate.
It'll bounce like a basketball on some concrete.
Yeah.
That's right.
This one.
I'm going to fold her up, Gabe.
We'll go get some meat.
See I'm strapped in, too.
Tether right there.
Harness If you're going to work out of a lift or a bucket truck, I highly recommend that you too be tethered in.
It's a It's an OSHA requirement anyhow, but man, it's you need to be tethered in cuz if things go to crap while you're up there in the air, it's like your mind all of a sudden reverse back, well, I'm tethered in so I'm not going to hit the ground.
No, it'll be fine right there. I don't think nobody's going to mess with it right there.
Fold her all the way up.
And when we come back, I'll go ahead and get these other couple limbs I can reach from this side, Gabe.
And then we'll jump over here and get in the get it the neighbor's yard, didn't it?
It's all working.
All right, so Gay is already cleaning up over there. We are done over there. You see how we got that oven up.
We got to finish taking this limb out right here.
We get this one. It's right above me.
See we're over the house.
There's a fence wire, building. I've been taking that limb back, taking that one back over to another wire, camper, building, wire.
Kind of a crazy uh drop zone. I had to drop in. We're getting her uh getting her done.
I throw a stick all way from over here and hit you in the head. You whistling over there, Gay?
What did I tell you one time? You whistle again, I was going to come down and beat the crap out of you.
Uh Oh, yeah.
So then there was limbs, limbs. Those limbs were draped over that root and actually hanging all the way over off this side over here when I started on that.
So, Eric's about to be here to start on the lift today. Today is Tuesday, May the 19th. Gave and I've got all the covers off of it. Taken the air and blown all the sawdust off that thing, too.
We're not planning on doing any tree work today and just being here with them while he does the inspection and all that stuff cuz it takes the better part of the day to do it.
But, I got Gabe. He's checking all the air pressures on everything.
And going over all that. He just got through with the dump trailer, did the chipper, and the little trailer yard. Got all those checked.
I do have a 50-ft towable lift running to where he can do the bottom section of the boom right there.
You have to have another lift to be able to do it because the only way you can extend that one out is if you got a candlestick up or you can do it out. So, we picked that up this morning where he could uh get that done and then uh and then I'm going to have Gabe then we'll fuel that machine, the Hyundai.
I'll have him grease both of them. I've got two flats over on the stump grinder right now. We'll pull them off. There's nothing in them.
It's uh those are tubeless tires and it's really easy like when you're grinding up in a big stump to rub the side of the stump where you're making your cut and what it'll do is it'll push the push the tire in just a little bit and if any of that debris gets in there on that bead right there, like some of the grindings or anything, then you got a air leak and it'll let the air out of them. Only way you can stop it from leaking, man, is you have to pull the damn tire off there, clean it. We'll catch y'all later. Later, Daddy.
