Stress is the feeling when life feels too much, caused by modern factors like constant connectivity, social media comparison, money pressures, and work demands; while excessive stress harms the body and mind, a little stress can be helpful for focus, so managing stress involves taking real breaks, talking to someone, saying no sometimes, and moving your body.

Why Is Everyone So Stressed These Days? | Easy English Talks
Added:Welcome to Laura's English Vibe. Hello everyone. Welcome back to Easy English Talks.
>> Hi, how are you doing today?
>> I am stressed.
>> Ha, that is actually perfect because today we talk about stress.
>> Yes, today's question is why is everyone so stressed these days?
And when I say everyone, I really mean everyone.
>> Your boss is stressed.
>> Your teacher is stressed.
>> Your dog is probably stressed, too.
>> Actually, studies show that pets can feel stress from their owners.
>> See, even the dog, poor dog.
>> So, what is stress exactly?
Stress is the feeling you get when life feels too much.
>> Too much work, too many problems, too many things to do.
>> Your body feels tight. Your mind feels full.
>> Like a phone with 1% battery and 47 apps open.
>> Oh, that is a perfect description. I feel that every day.
>> Let's talk about why.
Part one. Modern life is very busy.
>> Laura, do you think people were more stressed in the past or now?
>> H, that is a good question.
>> In the past, people did not have emails.
>> No emails. That sounds wonderful.
>> No work messages at midnight.
>> No notifications every 5 minutes.
Life was simpler, >> but also harder in different ways.
>> That's true. No medicine, no clean water, no supermarkets.
>> Okay, maybe the past was not so great either.
>> But today, we have a new problem. We are always connected.
>> Always connected means always available.
Your boss sends a message at 1000 p.m.
>> and you feel like you must reply right now >> even though you are already in bed >> with your eyes half open typing with one hand.
>> We have all done that. Don't pretend you haven't.
The line between work and free time is now very thin >> or it does not exist at all >> and that creates a lot of stress.
>> Part two, social media and comparing ourselves.
>> Alex, I think social media makes stress worse.
>> Oh, definitely. Let me give you an example.
>> Go ahead.
>> You wake up in the morning. What is the first thing you do?
Check my phone.
>> Me, too. And what do you see?
>> Someone is on a beautiful vacation in Italy.
>> Someone just bought a new car.
>> Someone got a new job, a better job.
>> Someone's baby is so cute and their house is so clean.
>> And you are sitting in bed with messy hair, eating old biscuits.
>> And suddenly you feel bad about your life. Even though your life is actually fine.
>> That is the problem with social media.
>> We compare our normal everyday life with other people's best moments.
>> Nobody posts a photo of their messy kitchen.
>> Nobody says, "I cried in the bathroom today."
>> They only show the happy, pretty, successful parts.
>> So, we think everyone's life is perfect >> and ours is not. But that is not true.
Everyone has hard days.
>> They just don't post about it.
>> Part three, money stress and work stress.
>> Let's talk about another big reason for stress. Money.
>> Oh yes, money stress is very real.
>> Everything costs more these days.
>> Rent is expensive.
>> Food is expensive. Even a cup of coffee is expensive now.
>> I remember when coffee was cheap. Now I feel stressed just looking at the menu.
>> $6 for a coffee. Let me go home and make my own.
>> And work stress is also very common.
>> Many people feel like they must work harder and harder.
>> But they don't get more money or more rest.
>> They just get more work. And if they say no, they are afraid of losing their job.
>> So they say yes to everything even when they are already full.
>> Like a bag that is too full. One more thing and it will break.
>> That is a great image. Many people feel exactly like that.
>> And when you feel like that for too long, it becomes a big problem.
>> Like burnout.
>> Yes. Burnout means you are so tired from work that you cannot function anymore.
>> Your body says stop. I am done.
>> Part four. What does stress do to your body?
>> Alex, I think many people don't know how bad stress is for the body.
>> You are right. Let's talk about that.
>> When you are stressed, your body thinks there is danger.
>> Like a tiger is coming.
>> Ha. Yes. Your body prepares to run or fight.
>> Your heart beats faster.
>> Your breathing gets quick.
>> Your muscles get tight.
>> This is useful if a tiger is really coming.
>> But the tiger is just a difficult email from your boss >> and you can't run away from that.
>> So your body stays in this danger mode for a long time >> and that is not good. Too much stress can cause headaches, >> bad sleep, >> stomach problems, >> feeling angry or sad for no clear reason.
>> It even makes it harder to think clearly.
>> So when you are very stressed, you actually work, not better.
>> Stress is trying to help you, but it often makes things harder.
>> Part five, how can we manage stress?
Okay, enough scary facts. Let's talk about solutions.
>> Yes, please. I need these.
>> The first tip, take real breaks.
>> Not I'll check my phone for 5 minutes breaks.
>> Real breaks. Go outside, walk, look at some trees.
>> Trees are free and very calming.
>> I love that. Trees are free therapy.
The second tip, talk to someone.
>> When stress is inside your head, it feels very big.
>> But when you say it out loud to a friend, it often feels smaller >> because your friend says, "Oh yes, I feel that too."
>> And suddenly you feel less alone.
>> The third tip, say no sometimes.
>> This is hard for many people.
>> Very hard. We want to be helpful.
>> We don't want to disappoint anyone.
>> But if you say yes to everything, you have no energy left for yourself.
>> You cannot pour water from an empty cup.
>> Oh, I love that saying.
>> And the fourth tip, move your body.
>> Exercise.
>> Yes, but it doesn't have to be the gym.
>> Even a short walk helps.
Dancing in your kitchen also works.
>> Nobody is watching, just dance.
>> Movement helps your body release the stress.
>> Like opening a window to let fresh air in. Part six. A little stress is okay.
>> Alex, is all stress bad?
>> Actually, no. A little stress can be helpful.
>> Really?
>> Yes. Think about a deadline. A deadline is when you must finish something by a certain time.
>> Without any stress, you might not start.
>> True. A little pressure helps you focus.
>> Like before an exam, a little nervous feeling helps you study.
>> But too much stress before an exam makes your mind go blank.
>> Exactly. A little stress equals helpful.
Too much stress equals harmful.
So the goal is not zero stress.
>> The goal is the right amount of stress >> like salt in food.
>> A little salt makes food delicious.
>> Too much salt and you throw the food away.
>> Perfect example. Stress is like salt.
Okay, let's do a quick summary.
>> Stress is a feeling when life feels too much.
Modern life is full of reasons to feel stressed.
>> Always being online, social media, money, work.
>> Too much stress is bad for your body and your mind.
>> But a little stress is actually helpful >> to manage stress. Take real breaks. Talk to someone. Say no sometimes. Move your body. And remember, you cannot pour water from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.
>> Thank you so much for listening to Easy English Talks.
>> Tell us in the comments what makes you stressed the most.
>> Work, money, social media, or maybe your dog.
See you in episode
