This attempt to rebrand 1980s kitsch as a study in game theory is a clever bit of intellectual window dressing for pure spectacle. It reminds us that behind every "strategic trade-off" lies the simple, timeless thrill of high-stakes gambling.

Let's Make A Deal | 1984 | Monty Hall | Big Deal: $7,287Added:
[cheering] [screaming] [cheering] It's time for the all new Let's Make a Deal, starring TV's Big Dealer, Monty Hall. [cheering and applause] Thank you and welcome to the all new Let's Make a Deal. What a great crowd we got [applause] here.
And we've got it from all kinds of countries. We got, as somebody said, I'm from Canada, somebody from Europe, and there's even somebody said she's from another country, from New York, I think you said, right? [laughter] We'll uh we'll locate you pretty soon. Bring you back to the United States. This is where all the action takes place. Lots of fun at Let's Make a Deal. Fun surprises. Great prizes on the allnew Let's Make a Deal. [screaming] Now [cheering] I am looking if you put the signs down you see I am looking Maxine I'm looking for someone who was a great business advisor. Yes. Yes.
Well then come with me. Maxine Flam. Right. Yes. Now I said a business adviser. Your name is Flam. You're not a Flim Flam. All right. The kind of business advice you have to give now is real good advice. I want you to give this lady some advice over here. [screaming] Yes. Yes.
Ladles and gentlemen. Okay. [laughter] From an old burlesque show. Judy Pancini. Let's bake a deal. Okay. Now, what you're going to do is you're going to stay right there. I mean, stand right there. And you're not going to say a thing. This lady here is going to get paid to give you some business advice. And anything she decides you have to accept. That's okay, isn't it? Sure. Fine. I'll pay you $300 every time you give her a piece of advice. Isn't that nice?
Now, do you think, for example, that your client, Judy Pancini, should have the contents of this envelope, or do you think she should have the box on Brian's tray that he just brought down?
I will pay. Did I pay you the money yet? No. Oh, I will pay you the money.
All you have to do is tell her what to take and $300 is yours. Take the box. Take the box. Okay.
She wants you to have the box. And inside the box, what was there? There was a typewriter.
[cheering] Electronic type which Brian would describe. [applause] For home office, here's Swimex Collegiate. Today's electronic typing features in a new lightweight portable designed for typists on the go. The Collegiate Electronic Typewriter from Swintech. It retails for $449.
Did you like [cheering and applause] that? Would you like giving advice? Yes. You gave something away, but you chose. Of course, you may. There may be $15,000 in this envelope. Hope not.
So do I. [laughter] All right. Now, Maxine, you can do it again. Another $300. Give her advice.
Sure. Because you see the envelope is still left over and she may have the envelope or she may have what's behind curtain number three. And you keep your typewriter. She keeps the typewriter. So do you want her to have the envelope or curtain number three? Oh no. I don't know. [cheering] She wants you to have the envelope. Wasn't that very nice? All right. So you have the envelope right now. And uh I'm going to show you what was behind curt number three that she didn't go for.
Behind curtain number three, there was a washer and a dryer. [cheering] A speed queen washer like those used in coin operies with stainless steel tub for gentle care of all your fabrics. Low water usage and longest warranties with matching dryer for today's laundry needs from Speed Queen. The pair sells for $999.90.
[cheering and applause] Well, she didn't want you to have that, Judy. She wanted you to have the envelope. Are you happy about it? Yes. All you got is All You didn't get that $999. Well, let's take a look and see what she traded for inside here. I see a one, two, three, $400. $500. [cheering] [applause] You may be seated for just a moment. I'll be back with you. Judy Pancini, it didn't turn out bad, huh? Your business adviser, Maxine Flam, got you $500 and a 400 plus typewriter.
Right. Right. All right. Now, you haven't had a chance to do any business yourself. So, now I'm going to let you make your own decisions. You can keep what you got, sit down, and bake up a deal at home and do all the things that a chef would do. Or you might say to yourself, I think I'd like to do a little trading myself. I'll trade for what? I haven't said anything yet.
She says she doesn't even know what she's trading for. That box on the display floor.
[cheering] [applause] I'm gonna keep the money and the typewriter. She's going to keep the money in the typewriter. And turns, you know, if you went for the box, what you could have had, you could have had yourself, [cheering] you would have enjoyed it, Maxine, [applause] you see, Maxine, that bunny rabbit would have been ideal for you, right? [applause and cheering] Gee, Maxine, that rabbit looks like you somebody you would enjoy going out with, wouldn't it?
Huh? [laughter] Anyhow, oh, incidentally, before we leave, Judy Pancini, I want to tell you that not only do you have $500 and not only do you have a typewriter, but by keeping it a little surprise as well, because inside [screaming] there was another $500 bill. [cheering] And so, you end up with $1,000 in cash and [applause] a typewriter. Good for you.
Now, [cheering] Max, [applause] you did good business for her. Very good business. Now, you have uh $600 in cash. I think I gave you right. Uh you can go into business for yourself right now. I'll show you part of a curtain. You tell me whether you want to buy that curtain where Karen is standing. Open up curtain number two. Show you part of the deal. Everybody needs calcium.
Ocal calcium supplement. If your body isn't getting enough calcium, it could rob it from your bones. OSCAL calcium. Your body needs it. There's something behind the calcium wall as well. So, do you want to spend your 600 bucks or do you want to keep your money? [cheering] I'll I'll trade. She's going to trade away 600. And what have we got for this little wacky wabbit behind that wall of calcium? We have for you [cheering] a portable spa.
You like that, eh? A portable spa. [cheering] Hot. A portable acrylic spa from Jericho. This citation fits through most doorways and is a fully self-contained spa with built-in heater, filter, and pump, including thermal cover from Jericho. Total value of this healthy deal is $3,320.
Fantastic. Thank you, little bunny rabbit, and thank you to the chef. [cheering and applause] Yes, sure, Judy. All right.
Well, that was an exciting opening deal, wasn't it? In our next deal, you won't need dollars. All you need is one thin dime to come away at the lot. Oh, I can hardly wait to see that one. Not your [cheering] [applause] show. I want to show you. Put the signs down, folks. I said that this in this next deal, you would need a dime. And the reason you would need a dime is that dime would be very, very important to you and you. The two of you this can't camouflage a deal here with me. I know who you are. [cheering] Uh, oh, I like this. From the halls of Monty's deal to the doors he has to trade. I like that. We can see the rest of the song later. Mike Seams and Linda Seams. It seems we've stood and talked like this before, but I can't remember where or when. Look, a little dime for you. This dime is so important because it could lead you into curtain number one.
And back of curtain number one. What's waiting for you? But this new automobile, [cheering] the Chevrolet Chevet two-door coupe features an economical 1.6 L engine, AM radio, and reclining front bucket seats from Soft Chevrolet. It retails for $5,772, but we're add tax and license for a total of $6,28810.
[cheering] [applause] Now, the reason I give you the dime is because that's what you could buy the car for if it sells for a dime. But right now, it sells for $6,28810.
But I'm going to ask you to price some items. And every time you price the item correctly, that's within bounds that I give you. Then we'll reduce the price of the car. Take a look at that thing. The way it goes down. See, we we'll close out the lights. Melanie, show them how the lights go out there. See, the 6,000 could become 288. And then you take take the two out and it becomes 88 and so on. And if you can do it for me h and it gets down to 10 cents, you have the 10 cents to buy the car. So all of them are lit up again and Melanie's just dying to turn them out for you to help you in the car. And uh with Karen standing behind the table and Brian ready to describe item number one. Let's hear it. It's a 12 oz can of frozen concentrate fruit drink. You can buy bright and early breakfast beverage and get more than great orange taste. Get more change. Bright and early costs about a third less than orange juice. I'll take the price of that car down by $6,000. If you can price this item within 50 cents. Oh, well, if you call out prices, then it's going to be terrible for them because what if you call out the wrong price and they lost the car?
Wouldn't you feel bad? Especially when I send Brian up to hit you.
$129. $129. A lot different than what you said. And the price was 79. How what was the spread I gave him? 50. You just made it. Oh, 79 to12 is50. You just squeaked in.
And so we'll take [applause] the price of that car down by $6,000. And now it's for 288.
Oh, you almost gave me heart failure on that one, right? All right, here we go. And incidentally, when you think about prices, although yours was high, I want you to think about the manufacturer suggested retail selling price on the West Coast in all cases. Here we go with item number two.
A 2 oz jar of olives. When it comes to Spanish olives, quality has made Derky number one. Select plump and tangy olives from Derky.
Okay, we'll take uh the 200 out of that picture if you can price this within 40 cents.
I don't uh I know you don't know [laughter] that. So, let Linda go all the way herself. Mike, 99 cents within 40 it has to be. The price is 65. You did it within 34. [cheering] A little squeaker again, but the price of [applause] the car goes down $200.
And now it's selling for $8810. We'll take another 80 bucks off for this next one.
But come on a little closer. You're making us all really persspire here. Item number three, Dilia pasta imported from Italy. Delicious pasta made the way it was meant to be from 100% simolina and Durham wheat. Price this for me within 40 cents. We'll knock off 80 bucks off the price of the car and it'll be selling for 810. within 40 cents for the pasta.
$1.79 and the price is a dollar and we lose and everybody has to say [cheering] well I guess the car goes back to the garage. But let me see now. I'll tell you. We still have one item left and I'd like to put some money in your hands. Okay. So I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll have Brian describe this fourth and final item and then I'm going to let you price it for $400.
Okay? And I'm going to give you lots of room on that, too. So, let's listen to the description.
Here's a gallon of Scrubable True Test Easy Care latex flat wall and trim finish for walls and woodwork only at True Value Hardware Stores. You priced this for me within $3, high or low.
That's a $6 spread. And you got yourself 400 bucks in cash. Isn't that a nice offer? $3. I bet you could all do it, couldn't you? Sure you could. When you're sitting there, you can. Okay, Linda.
$12. $12. The price actually is $18.95. And we don't get the 400 either. Well, I think what we got to do with these kids is we got to say to them, we're going to give you all these items and $50 to remember us on Let's Make a Deal. Linda and Mike Seam. Thank you very [applause] much.
[applause] And I'll be coming back to try a little experiment with some traders. You'll see how it comes out right after we do this.
All right, here we [cheering] go.
Okay, [applause] friends. I want to [cheering] see Hold it, hold it, hold it, folks. I want to see how a lady and a gentleman will trade under similar circumstances. Would you stand, please?
This isn't ready to explode, is it? Oh, I hope not, Nancy. I just hope not. I know. Uh, Jeff. Um, okay, Jeff. Whatever you say, Jeff Stewart, whatever you say. Nancy Walker, Jeff, each of you have a chance to make the same deal. I want to see how you do. Now, for example, I have some money here with a $50 bill on both sides and money in between. Right.
Right. You may each trade for this if you want it or you may each trade for something else. Example, Brian's coming down with a box on his tray. You may each trade for the box on Brian's tray. What will it be? The cash or the box? You can each do it. What do you want to do, Jeff? 50/50.
More in between. [cheering and applause] Jeff, make your own decision. Jeff, stop asking that.
The box. He wants the box. What would you What do you want to do? The money. All right. You keep the money. Don't open it up just yet. And we'll see what's inside the box for Jeff. Jeff, you've got some sunglasses. [cheering] What kind of sunglasses are Rayban leather sunglasses?
Classic styles with rich leather accents, plus sunsensitive gradient fashion lenses for wear indoors and out from Boslam. The two pair of glasses sell for a total of $410. [cheering] Yeah, that's right. $410. They're special. They're really special. All right, but now you may me like them. You may want to go for the box on the display floor. You may not like your money. You may want to go for the box on the display floor. Do I get to choose again? box. Huh?
I get to choose again. This is it right now. Between this or the box? That's what I just said.
I'll go for the box. She goes for the box. What are you going to do? I'll take the box. All right.
Let me tell you. You see, a fool and his money are soon parted, right? I hope not. But also, beautiful contestants and their money are soon parted. And beautifully dressed contestants are soon [laughter] parted because you see, you trade away the money very quickly. In between the 50s, my dear, were more 50s. I think there were about 11 of them all together.
$550. You traded that for the box. And if you think that's something, wait to see what you trade away inside the case here. They went along. There was a nice $1,000 box. [cheering] But you both went for the box. You both get the box. What's inside the box for these kids who trade away all that money? [cheering] Did very well. [applause] A Kelvinator no frost 16 cubic foot refrigerator freezer only 28 in wide with four adjustable cantal lever shelves, see-through meat keeper and twin crispers from Kelvinator appliances. It sells for $79.95. And to keep your home comfortable, the Bioner ultrasonic humidifier silent sound vibrations create fine mist, restore moisture, and reduce static electricity from Bionire. They're valued at $425.85, making total value of this deal $1,285.80.
[cheering] All right, so both of you are doing very well now. [applause] And I'm glad you left me the glasses. You like Now you like the glasses now that I show you how well they look. Okay, now you each have all those appliances. We have curtain number three, and I'll show you part of it. This is your last chance to make a deal. It starts off with fruit punch.
Delicious Sunny Delight Florida citrus punch brand. Enriched with vitamins's A, B1, and C. Nothing delights you and the kids like Sunny Delight. You want what's behind that? The fruit punch. What's behind it? Or do you want to keep all those appliances that you just won? I'm going to keep them. You're going to keep your appliances. You're going to keep They're both going to keep their appliances. What did we have behind the fruit punch that they both could have traded for? There was 500 lb of a four year supply of Klaw. Well, come to think of it, maybe [applause] about three years supply of coleslaw. So, both of you made a wise decision and treated exactly the same at the very end. Thank you, Nancy, and thank you, Chef. And now, stand by because you're going to see such a great act next time out.
[cheering] [applause] All right, now it's time for our big deal, which is worth $7,287. During the past few minutes, I made all kinds of deals with the people. And now I'm going to see if two of them want to go one more time for that big deal of the day, but they have to risk what they've already won. Now, I know that Maxine Flam has a small worth $3,320. Oh, you don't want to [laughter] you don't want to come clean, huh? Okay, so you're going to get your first chance at the big door. And Judy Pansini has a type of $1,000 in cash and she says yes.
