The video provides a sharp look at how *Deep Space Nine* uses the Ferengi to satirize 20th-century human paranoia through the Roswell incident. It effectively balances fan nostalgia with a clear analysis of how science fiction mirrors our own cultural absurdities.

Little Green Men | Star Trek Fans First Time Watching DS9
Added:Well, we've had a little bit of a rough week recording wise uh to fill you guys in. Um especially if you're on your if you're on YouTube, you're on a little bit of a different timeline, but uh did not care for the Deep Space 9 episode that we watched a couple days ago.
Voyager, I had a little bit more fun with the episode than you did, I think.
But uh overall, we had a lot of kind of nagging issues. And then uh we just watched an episode of The Expanse, which is a Patreon exclusive. And if you're on YouTube, just be grateful. But [laughter] uh but um today we're watching Deep Space 9 again and I'm just hoping this is the last thing we're watching this week.
Just I I hope we can just end it on a good note. Uh we did watch the movie Moon this week which was fun. Um but beyond that, it's it's it's been a little bit it's been a little bit rough.
Oh. Oh, The X-Files was great this week.
>> Oh yeah, of course. We can always count on that.
>> Yeah, weird. The X-Files was great. How how crazy. Uh [laughter] it's unfathomable. How How can that happen?
But yeah, we're really looking for a winner here. Uh, obviously season 4 of Deep Space 9 has been absolutely [ __ ] fantastic and just and we just slightly did not like or care or some things about the previous episode.
>> Weird.
>> Yeah, it was weird. And if that's the floor, >> that's great because because everything else has been so [ __ ] great. If that's as bad as it's going to get, then lucky us. And >> so, we're just also just assuming that or hoping for that. We don't know >> at this point. It's the floor. Yeah. I don't know. It could get worse. We'll see. All right, everyone, gather around.
>> That's Rahm's voice.
>> When a young Fangi goes out on his own, he traditionally raises capital by selling his boyhood treasures.
>> I couldn't even tell that was dog behind him at first. [laughter] >> I'm going to miss him and I know you will, too.
>> Does he look a little different? Just that fit.
>> I'm buying these pajamas.
>> That'll be three strips of Latin, >> two headdress on. I think.
>> And also maybe looks like maybe they did his makeup a little bit differently.
Like they want him to look older a little bit.
>> Nog, what is this?
>> My favorite hollow suite program.
>> A visit with the pleasure goddess of Ricks. Yours for me. 10 strips of platinum. He'll take it.
>> Where'd you get this spring ball racket?
>> Out of a replicator.
>> Try out of my quarters. This is mine.
[laughter] And it was sitting here on the bar all along. That's incredible. [laughter] [sighs and gasps] >> It's a Fangi tooth sharpener.
>> Got a full house.
>> How much?
>> That's kind of like selling your toothbrush though.
>> Yeah. He always said that if he became a success, he'd buy me my own ship. Now it's here.
I can go any place I want.
>> Maybe it's time you considered that early retirement we talked about.
I could take over the bar and you could fly off into the great unknown, never to return.
>> [laughter] >> If the boy wants to go to Starfleet Academy, you might as well do it in style.
>> Yes, brother.
>> All I ask is a tall ship and a load of contraband to fill it with.
>> All right, so Quirk and Rahm going on an adventure. I can't help but feel [clears throat] he's like he's going to sabotage.
He's going to sabotage uh Nog getting in the Starfleet or something. I can't help but >> I mean I feel like he's already tried and failed with the whole exam thing.
Remember that?
>> Yeah.
>> So it's like at this point it kind of seems like the deal was already done.
Like he's going. [sighs] >> Yeah. Maybe. Or he's going to frame him for selling this contraband or whatever.
I I don't know. It's I don't like it.
I'm worried because now that fake future has been null and void because Rahm does eventually become a captain. But >> wasn't our next Files episode named this?
>> Yes.
>> Interesting. Isn't it?
>> H >> next one would have been first.
>> And make sure you keep your eyes on him because he'll be keeping his eyes on you.
>> Morn's going to run the bar. [snorts] >> Try not to miss me too much while I'm gone.
>> I'll be counting the days until you get back. [laughter] >> Odo's on to him even as he's leaving the station.
>> I wonder how many hours you and I spent hanging [music] around up here.
>> 2,147.
Just kidding. But it was a lot.
[laughter] >> Knock.
>> Doctor, if you're trying to return something from the sale, >> it's a going away present >> to help you get around easier on Earth.
>> It's a completely interactive program detailing Earth's customs, culture, history, geography.
>> Again, >> I better be going. My father and Uncle Cork are waiting for me.
>> Good luck, Nug.
Make us proud. So, this is like his official like he's going to Earth.
>> Yeah, like he's going to be gone.
>> Damn.
>> Or unless Cork [ __ ] this up.
>> You're really worried about that?
>> I am.
>> I'll walk you over to the airlock.
>> I think they've put in too much setup for it to just yank it, you know, just take it away. I want him in the show, though.
>> Yeah. Okay. I think the reality is is that >> that was a good spot.
>> Oh, the best.
>> The spot they used to hang out at, you know, with their legs dangling.
>> Mhm.
>> What I really think is happening that Cork is just double dipping. You know, he's taking no the earth, but he also has a deal set up there.
>> Yeah. Fangi shuttle Quirk's treasure has [music] just departed the station.
[snorts] >> Glad I'm not going with them.
>> Only thing that worries me. No one warned [music] Earth that they're coming. [laughter] >> Have we ever I don't even know if Fangi ever been on Earth? I don't know.
>> It took us twice as long to establish the Brangi alliance and we had a bowar technology from the >> 5,000 10,000. What's the difference?
The speed of technological advancement isn't nearly as important as short-term quarterly gains.
[laughter] [laughter] >> Uncle, are you smuggling chemo? Isn't that dangerous >> and highly profitable? Especially if you make a side trip to Orion on the way home from Earth.
>> The last time you went to waste extraction, I snuck back to the cargo bay and took a look around.
>> Where did you get to be so smart? Waste extraction.
>> I've just lacked self-confidence.
[laughter] >> How much?
>> 20% of the profits.
>> I suppose you'll want to cut, too.
>> It's my duty to report any violation of Federation law to my superiors immediately. But then again, I haven't been sworn in yet. I'll take 10%.
[laughter] >> I thought I told you to go faster.
Faster it is.
It's also like our first that I can remember adventure of all three of them.
>> Yeah, good point. Cuz Nog wasn't in uh the Mugie episode.
>> Father, have you ever heard of the Bell riots?
>> Don't bother me now.
>> But doesn't this Gabriel Bell human look just like Captain Cisco? [laughter] >> This Iron Robert had to bring that up.
>> Remember when we did this episode?
[laughter] That's funny that he that he acknowledged it. The only way this could have happened is >> Oh, wait.
>> If the command sequencer was designed to fail.
>> You mean sabotage?
>> He never did like you very much, Uncle.
>> So, the warp drive won't shut down.
What's the worst thing that could happen?
>> The ship could continue accelerating until it tears itself apart.
>> Wait, no. You don't think the warp can't shut down? So, they're going to time travel back to that time.
>> To that exact time? Why else would they show that besides Ira and Robert giving themselves a little?
>> If my time is just right, I should be able to get us close enough to Earth to make an emergency landing.
>> You're a genius.
>> Think so?
>> How should I know? I have no idea what you're talking about. Just do it.
[music] Rob knock.
>> Oh, [laughter] little green men.
>> Get me, General Denning.
Tell him one of the Martians is awake.
Oh, 1947. Okay.
Okay. So, it's a nice little guy. [laughter] >> So, it's a nice little showing the bell ride thing saying, "Hey, that was a time travel thing as a a soft little >> Mhm.
>> I'm not telling the public anything until we find out exactly what we're up against."
>> Like, is there any other actor that looks more like an army general than this guy?
>> Nope.
No universal translator.
>> Yeah.
>> It's locked. What is this place?
Where are we?
>> To Amir.
>> One thing's for sure. This isn't Starfleet Academy.
>> I wonder what happened to the ship.
>> My ship? Where's my ship?
>> My ship? [snorts] >> Look, Professor, we didn't ask you here just because you're Nurse Garland's fiance. I need someone to talk to these Martians.
>> I want to know what they think of the aliens stylish outfits. [laughter] >> That drip.
>> If it wasn't for my father, WE'D ALL BE DEAD.
>> Maybe we are dead.
>> What are you talking about?
>> Maybe this is the divine treasury.
>> Divine treasury.
>> Where's the blessed excheer? Where are the celestial auctioneers? And why aren't we bidding for our new lives?
>> Celestial auctioneers.
>> Don't be ridiculous. The bar was showing a profit.
>> [laughter] >> That that determines where you go, how much profit you make.
>> Did you understand a word of that?
>> Our universal translators must be malfunctioning >> or they have it in their head.
>> Maybe it's some kind of greeting.
>> She may be honest.
Oh god, >> those are military uniforms from one of the old nation states, uh, Australia or something.
>> Why are they banging their heads?
>> They're just mimicking us. [sighs] >> I'd always heard primitive humans lacked intelligence, but I had no idea they were this stupid.
The three of us and millions of primitive humans.
>> I like those arts.
Too ah sound effect coming in.
[laughter] >> Yeah, that was like such a toss cut to commercial.
>> This girl looks familiar too, by the way. Looks like she was on TNG.
>> Probably.
>> They've come from so far away, but they still have the same basic family structure that we do.
I wonder if the third one's related, too.
>> For all we know, it could be the mother.
>> I'm working as fast as I can, brother.
But there must be some kind of interference disrupting our translators.
>> What kind of interference?
>> I'm not sure. Could be solar flares or maybe ionic interference.
>> I like how their clothes look like camo.
>> Let's face it, Jeff. When it comes to beings from another planet, we don't have any experts. You'll find a way of communicating with them, darling. I know you will.
>> It's two cigarettes. [laughter] >> And imagine the possibilities. Who knows?
>> Oh, for her. Okay.
>> If it's so deadly, then why do they use it? It's also highly addictive.
>> How do they get their hands on it?
>> They buy it in stores. They buy If they'll buy poison, they'll buy anything. [laughter] There's nothing like it here.
Given enough time, a good team of linguists could probably decipher it.
>> We're not bringing in anyone else. Too many people know about this as it is.
>> Let's do another tech.
>> My name is Quark, chief financial officer of the Fangi Alliance, and I've [music] got a business proposition for you.
>> Oh boy. Here we go.
>> We could teach you to make phasers, disruptors, photon torpedoes, or even quantum torpedoes.
Seeing how we're going to be advancing your culture about 400 years overnight, I'd say a couple of million bars would be about right.
>> You know, court, you might be some kind of Martian.
>> Bangi, >> whatever.
The more we talk, the more you remind me of my brother-in-law.
>> Is he a businessman?
>> He's a car salesman and not a very good one.
>> [laughter] >> In other words, if we don't play ball, you're going to sell these advanced weapons of yours to the Russians.
>> To be honest, I'd much rather work with you Australians.
>> Americans, >> whatever. [laughter] >> Nice.
>> What do you know about Adam bombs?
>> My people have been watching your world for years. We know all about you.
Baseball, root beer. [snorts] [laughter] Now, why did you go talk to that president of yours?
>> You think Quark's going to meet the president?
>> Are you saying that all the women on your world walk around naked?
>> Uh-huh. It's the law.
>> You don't say anything.
>> Well, I guess I'm never going to visit your world, and neither are you.
[laughter] >> Having trouble with my ear again. Could you massage it some more?
>> Oh, no.
>> You know, come to think of it, my ears bothering me, too. [laughter] >> What about the general?
>> Is he going to let us leave?
>> Don't worry. Everything's under control.
>> Why do they leave the dog in there?
>> Get away from me.
>> What?
What are you doing here?
>> Placing you under arrest for attempting to smuggle chemo.
[laughter] >> You hid on board the ship. That's right.
Now I'm stuck here with you.
>> That's crazy.
>> We should be able to trigger a temporal surge in the subspace continuum and recreate the same kind of time warp that brought us here in the first place.
But these humans, they're nothing like the ones from the Federation. They're crude, gullible, and greedy.
>> You mean like you?
>> Yeah. These are humans I can understand and manipulate.
We'll establish an economic empire beyond even Grand Nagger Zach's wildest dreams. And I'll control it all.
>> I'm not going back. And neither is my ship. We'll see about that.
>> Another thing reference.
>> That was such a good reveal for Odo. I I was not expecting that at all.
>> If there's any biting to be done, we're the ones who are going to do it.
Why don't you tell me everything you know about the Russians?
>> Little truth serum, huh?
Why would they have truth serum in the 40s? [screaming] WOULD you please stop doing that?
>> If you don't tell me what I want to know, needles are going to be the least of your worries.
>> Who's your brother take?
[laughter] >> It's old COUSIN GAYLA'S FAULT. I WANT to go home. I want my muggy.
>> Mooie?
>> Hey, Moogie.
300 Marauder class attack cruisers are orbiting your planet, preparing for the attack.
[laughter] >> Where's the landing zone?
>> Untie me and I will show you on that map.
>> You heard him.
>> Oh, come on.
>> Show me.
>> The first landing parties will arrive here. [laughter] >> Ohio?
>> Here, right by this blue blob?
You mean your people are going to invade Cleveland?
[screaming] [applause] [cheering] [laughter] >> It was an accident. I tripped. I didn't mean to do it. I'm really, really sorry.
Shoot him.
>> We got to shoot him reference.
>> Thank you.
>> Hey, there we go.
>> Grateful. But couldn't you have done that an hour ago?
>> We've got to get you out of here.
>> Won't you get in trouble for this?
Why should they? We forced them to help us by using our uh >> your insidious mind control powers.
>> That's not bad.
[laughter] >> Come on. Your ships's in hanger 18.
>> Come on.
[laughter] >> Cleveland. You're going to invade Cleveland.
>> Room three.
Hold it right there. Stay back or I'll disintegrate this hostage >> with my death [music] ray.
>> It's a lot like a finger to me.
>> Man, we got Kirk double fist. We got everything in this episode.
>> Boom.
Seeing the ride in a military jeep is just [laughter] >> I only hope that one day mankind will travel to the stars and take its place in a [music] vast alliance of planets.
>> Federation of planets.
>> Excuse me.
>> Uh, don't pay any attention to him. He's an idiot. [laughter] Oh, >> what do we do now, General?
>> About what, Captain? All we ever found was a crashed weather balloon.
[laughter] >> Hold on.
>> Oh, that's crazy.
>> I don't like this. Mom, tell your brother it's going to be all right.
>> The bomb was just like a test they were doing, right?
>> Yeah. At 5 a.m. or whatever.
>> Are you telling me that Oppenheimer's down there right now? Just >> Well, son, it looks like you're going to get to Starfleet Academy after all.
>> At least you got enough for our passage home.
>> Wait till I get my hands on cousin Gayla.
>> You're going to have to wait longer than you think. [laughter] >> Ron, get me a lawyer.
>> I'll contact Cousin Gayla. I'm sure he'll know a good one.
>> RA, YOU IDIOT. [laughter] >> See you in a few weeks, brother.
[laughter] All right. Do you think that's like not the last we see a dog forever, but like he's gone from the station?
>> Probably going to be a while before we ever see him again. I mean, I'm sure eventually we'll have a Captain's log saying, "Oh, dog is on vacation from Starfleet Academy."
>> Dog's semester is up.
>> Hopefully, he flunked out. [laughter] >> Why he put that in his vlog? Well, it's a little bit fitting, I guess, that I wore this shirt today because we watched a little green men, but not the X-Files episode, the Deep Space 9 episode, season 4, episode 8, I believe. Uh, and what did you think of it? It's also fitting that I wore my Captain Dad shirts. I am not a father. I'm wearing this ironically. So, uh, and we have Rahm and and if I had one word to describe this, if I had my whiteboard before they disappeared, I would say fun. And that's what we needed today.
Just some good old fun. As we said in the opening of the episode, we watched an episode of The Expanse and that was that. And then I just like, "Oh god, give us something." And this was exactly what I needed. This was so much fun. Not to be taken too seriously. Just the big three. [laughter] The big three of the fingi having a good time. A great reveal with Odo and just overall goofiness and genuine laughs from the Cleveland thing to everything. It was just fun. I I had a great time. I was a little worried when they were first arriving to Earth and we had that little nod or remembered uh to past tense and all I can think was, "Oh [ __ ] is that a little nod to the audience? Hey, we're going back to that time." But no, it was just a little odd that would a little nod, a little hint to the the audience. We're doing a little bit of time travel and going back to 47 with the whole uh Roz Roswell, right? The whole Roswell incident. It was just fun. Uh very little complaints if any. I just had a blast.
>> Yeah. I uh you know, not the biggest fan of time travel in Star Trek obviously.
Uh the toos episode in season 1 um where they go to Earth, I always forget the name. return to Tomorrow or tomorrow's Yesterday, something like that.
>> It's one of those >> uh where they have like the pilot and then they go down to like the military base. Um that was similar to here where they go to past Earth. I mean, for toos that was like current day Earth, but they go to past Earth, but they're just on this base. Like it's not they're not like exploring a lot of the Earth. It's just this one location. And that has positives and negatives. Um for a time travel story, I did think it was fun.
the time travel elements were used mostly for humor which was good. I still think that there was a little bit of that uh over expository dialogue um about Earth and all those things and even I who am not super educated on the 40s even to me it felt a bit too much like how many times did they have to emphasize how like you know dumb or crude humans are in this time it's like I got it the first time you know there's a few things like that uh but overall I had a lot of fun with it. I just don't think it was that great. It was just like pretty disposable in my opinion. Nothing about it like probably never going to like uh want to watch it again necessarily. I didn't really find myself invested in any of it. I just find myself having the most fun when they were doing gags. Like uh the the communication thing when they didn't have their translator was funny.
And then obviously the biggest line takeaway of the you're telling me you're going to invade Cleveland? Like obviously us being from Cleveland, you know, but to look at it outside of our perspective, if I was from [ __ ] Chicago, Illinois, that wouldn't mean anything to me. So it's like that hits me because I live in Cleveland. But >> I think it'd be funny for anyone. You're going to invade Cleveland of all places.
>> Yeah, Cleveland's one of those places that gets mentioned all the time because it's like for some reason random and Hollywood likes to mention it all the time.
>> Yes, we're the butt of the joke of everything and we just got knocked out of the the playoffs with the Knicks >> or whatever. But yeah, I because it's always, oh, it's always New York or it's California or one of those states. And just the fact that it's Cleveland of all places to invade is is fun.
>> And a lot of people I think in LA are from Ohio or even from Cleveland. I mean, obviously Gates, you know, is from the area loosely. So, uh, the GOAT, LeBron James. So, I mean, there's a lot of famous people that are from Cleveland, but I think he gets mentioned because of that a lot, too. Um, but yeah, I mean I think you may have liked it a little bit more than me, which is funny because I could tell you were getting nervous when the from the hook you didn't seem that into it and then when they left in the ship and you started putting together it was time travel before I did you you felt really nervous but I think overall it worked more for you >> just because of who was on the writing team and just literally showing Cisco as Gabriel Bell and it's like oh god we're not gonna maybe but part of me was also hoping oh maybe they're just going to erase that entire episode and with the have quirk and all erase all that. But yeah, and you said about the to how they didn't really explore Earth at that time. In this sense, it kind of literally makes sense why they couldn't explore cuz [clears throat] they look like [ __ ] Frangi. We can't have them go walking around. And even though it's 1947, I still love how waxed they were.
I'm thinking in real life, they'd be >> locked in a very sterile room with nothing. They wouldn't be in there hanging out >> going like this. But I just it was just so low stakes. Even though they're in 1947, they can literally tract and change the entire history of Earth. But I didn't care because it was so low stakes. It it was just fun. It was just a nice little Okay. We And you me you harped on like the the constant uh harping on primitive Earth, Primitive Earth, and like oh people suck at this time. But I think it just led to a very funny line about core saying, "I understand these people."
>> Yeah. Yeah, it's like, "Oh, these are my people. I can fit in with these people.
I can manipulate them." So, >> yeah, for sure. And that was just an example I used, but I felt that there was a little bit of that dialogue throughout, which is fine. Um, but the uh stuff with Nog, he had like a few hours on that shuttle just to um study that Earth guide, and now he's like a a kind of knows everything that comes up in this episode. Like, how much did you specifically study the 40s of America?
And he thought it was Australia, which was funny. Um, yeah. I don't I'm willing to let it slide. It's a fun time. It's just to me it was like uh it's like it's a fun time that's it.
Like I think about like family business and it's like oh it's a really fun time and also there's a nice story and also Mugie is really cool you know a good character here. It was like it's a fun time that's it. Guest characters were not that great. Uh the woman Megan Gallagher was not in TNG. She was in this show. She was in Invasive Procedures. The guy that uh Mr. clamp.
Uh the woman that was with him.
>> Oh, the uh the Trill episode.
>> Yeah. Oh, >> where he steals it from her. She's the woman with him that like likes him and they're together, but then when he changes to Verro Dax, he doesn't like her anymore.
>> Got it. Okay. That's what she was from.
>> Wow. Yeah. I knew she looked familiar.
She definitely has one of those faces who looks very familiar.
>> Yeah.
>> She was fine. I I do love >> She did her best Peggy Carter impression.
>> Yeah. I I do love the the 40-ish almost to 60ish. Uh you you mentioned like the music swell and like that is a toos commercial cut.
>> Mhm. And I kind of like that little little callback, a little throwback to that time, like, oh, we're doing a to episode and little uh I don't know if it was intentional, but a little tribute to that show. Yeah, because there was like the episodes I already mentioned.
There's also the Nazi episode of toss where they go back in time. They do it all the time in to so I think they did it better because like that's what that show does, you know, as to where here was like it was funny, but yeah, I'm really I I feel like sometimes you say this, it's like yeah, I'm struggling what else to say. It's like the bits were funny. It's like that was really it.
>> Yeah. I don't have much to say either in terms of the other stuff because it was just funny. It It was a good time.
>> Uh I guess one thing Cork was like hellbent on staying here and taking over the planet and then after the uh the bad actor come Mr. Bald comes in and then he's able to flip like ah let's go home.
Let's get out of here.
>> Yeah. Well, I think once he goes to the freaking interrogation basically almost torture he's like yeah maybe we should leave. I think it was just more mind minorly inconvenience like quit putting those needles at me. He's [laughter] not doing anything.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> But do we need to talk about Nog and his uh >> the lobe job?
>> The lobe job.
>> Yet again talking bringing up the lobe job. It's uh it's not one of their best bits.
>> No. Especially when it's been explained what it is.
>> Yeah. It's the equivalent of just going up and grabbing his dick and like not knowing it's his dick and >> but also I get it like dumb humans but you know it's pretty obvious that they're getting pleasure out of this and like if you've never seen an alien and then you start rubbing this lobe on his head and he starts going like you you'd kind of put together like yeah it seems like they're getting some type of pleasure out of this. So >> and doing it in front of your dad and uncle too [laughter] like I can't imagine that happening to me. It's like just getting the [ __ ] hand.
>> Oh, you've never gotten a hand job in front of your dad and uncle. [laughter] Everyone does this at one point.
>> Everyone remember that from their childhood.
>> Yeah. In a time travel scenario.
[laughter] >> Yeah. I mean, I just It's supposed to be one of those just funny. It's just one of those comedy things that for me I'll never be into. Same thing with like Three Stooges humor or whatever where it's like, "Yeah, I get it. Some, you know, people find that funny. I don't.
Whatever. Comedy subjective." It's kind of the same thing with the Lobes. It's like, "Okay, yeah." Haha.
>> Yeah. I do like the confirmation that Rahm is pretty much a genius. And like Ron was like self-aware here. It's like, "Oh, no. I know I'm smart. I'm just not I don't have the self-confidence to say it." Like hearing him say it out loud like, "Oh, that's great. That's that's funny." Yeah.
>> Yeah. And really like leaning into how smart he is and like figuring this all out, saving them even though it causes him to time travel, but saving them earlier, figuring out the plot to leave.
>> It's not their fault because he uh the cousin sabotaged a ship to not come out of warp drive. So yeah, it's not his fault at all.
>> Oh, 100%. And [ __ ] Absolutely. And uh [laughter] and he's basically the one who saves them here. Uh, great reveal with Odo. I did catch when the dog jumped up on him that it was the green screen type shot. Yeah. But I had no idea why. I'm like, what? What is that for? Yeah. And then it started transforming. I'm like, oh, no way. It makes sense he got onto the shuttle with them because he was so suspicious at the beginning with what was going on.
>> That was a great scene, too. Like going to Earth. [laughter] >> That was a great scene. It's like I'm sure you will.
>> Uh, really everyone else gets basically a day off here. They're only in the first few minutes. Jake is here.
>> Yeah, they brought in Jake. I mean, it was a Oh, we totally harped over that.
It was a nice goodbye scene. It was a nice goodbye.
>> It's like, oh, we spent a lot of our time doing nothing. Well, I'd rather do nothing with you than anyone else. And then the spot where they would always hang out in the early seasons with, you know, hanging out [ __ ] with the people walking by. It was nice. And if that was the goodbye, I'm sad that that that's it for now.
>> Yeah, this I mean that can't be the end of Nog.
>> Not the end, but like he's not going to be around as much. It's not as big of a goodbye as uh the last mission or whatever the TNG the Wesley episode.
Yeah. Because he's not around as much as Wesley.
>> And it's also interesting because with Wesley, we had no like before Final Mission that show is so episodic that there was no like, oh, Wes is about to leave. It was like Final Mission starts and they're just like he's leaving for the academy. It's like oh I mean he had done like coming of age and stuff in season one of trying to get into the academy but that was kind of out of nowhere. here. We've had this ramp up to like Nogs can go to the academy and so I I saw it coming, but even still I'm a little bit like a that's a bummer because I mean I don't think we're getting a beast story where we're cutting the NOG at the academy and it's completely separated. I mean that'd be awesome if we do but I don't expect it.
So it's like he already wasn't in the show that much. Now he's going to be also the show just has a habit of writing people off like Ko written off now Nog written off you know and it's kind of like I appreciate that I guess if they're not going to be here but I love these characters so it kind of sucks. Yeah. It's just one of those where I don't know if the writers just didn't want to deal with well what's Ko during all this? She's right there on the station with us. What? But the fact Jake is there on the station with us and he's never [ __ ] there. So it's not a big deal.
>> Yeah.
>> So I I don't know what the reason is. It it sucks uh because we don't get to see these people and we like them a lot and it's like the people we like most of course just whatever. Uh what else did we get?
Warf sharpening his teeth using someone else's toothbrush. Um >> nice little bit.
>> It was funny with uh uh Noga's stuff and stole Kira's like paddle from two years ago.
There was another funny line. What was it? What was it? Um, >> oh, when Rasher comes to give him a gift, he's like, "No, no, no returns."
No return.
>> Yeah. He's like, "If this is about a a refund, >> I I can't do it. I can't do it."
>> And then how about uh when Quirk is talking to the general and he's like, "How do you know about Adam Bobs? I know a lot about humans."
>> Baseball. Yeah. What' he say? He's like, "Baseball, >> root beer.
>> Root beer. Darts. Adam Bombs."
>> Adam Bombs. [laughter] >> And just referencing all things from the show that it's so good.
>> Yeah. So, comedy worked here for sure for the most part. Uh, it just wasn't, you know, there was just pretty shallow to me.
Nothing else beyond that. And to because of that, it kind of puts it at the bottom of what's been this great season other than the last episode. Like, you know, it's just one that I'm like, "Oh, yeah, that was fine."
You know, but I but I think you liked it a little more.
>> I had a great time. Uh I think I could have watched anything anything after [laughter] that expanse episode and it could be my favorite thing. Will I feel the same about this episode in a week or two? I think so. I I like this episode a lot.
It was fun. I'm a This season so far has been super heavy with a lot of things and super emotional and super [ __ ] awesome and badass and it's >> as I like a little just little nothing burger.
>> I have no problem with it. Yeah. Yeah.
like it's like oh it was just a nice break oneoff episode except it's also kind of you know a little bit heavy in the sense of the nog goodbye and everything which I'm glad they gave him some kind of ceremony and some kind of you know thing to acknowledge it and everyone got to be a little part of it and they were all supporting him except for a quark you know they're all supporting him giving him gifts all this stuff so that was all nice >> now if the comedy didn't work I'd probably feel different but but it worked so this isn't uh profit motive for me this is this is Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I get that.
>> Did we mention that the two writers also did what episode?
>> Oh, they did the story here and they also did the story for Indiscretion.
Yeah, the Dukat one about shooting his daughter. So quite different. Uh >> yeah, quite a range you guys.
>> Yeah. Uh but uh Robert and Ira obviously on the teleplay here and then uh directed by Con James Elconway, which dude talk about a resurgence. TNG season one director from the land of just forgotten directors and writers comes back from frame of mind and then ever since then has just more and more been given episodes to direct. So good good job out of him I guess. I don't know what he did for that five years.
>> Yeah. Where was he? I mean I can only guess he was just working on some other show or that's my only guess cuz he's not one of the ones where hey you're doing you're doing too much.
>> Was he was he that one?
>> Uh no. What do you mean by that?
>> We were talking about a director's like hey you're doing too much and then no that was on the X Files. He was like doing too much TNG like, "Hey, scale it back." And he had more freedom in the >> Oh, Robert Bowman.
>> Robert Bowman. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. But, um, [clears throat] yeah, and I mean, I get it in the sense of frame of mind for him to come back and do that. And that is excellently directed and visually really good. So, it makes sense that, you know, he would continue working. But, it's just interesting how many he's done specifically in these seasons, you know, doing I think he did Voyager as well as well as here. So, yeah, it was a fun one. It was a fun one.
>> I didn't come here to protect the patrons from your violent temper.
>> Okay. So, now we're going to patreon.com/target audience. Look at our patron takes. If you're wondering what that is for every single iteration of Star Trek and now the XFiles that we watch, we put up a post on patreon.com/target audience. Were you a potential or current patron? Can leave your take on the episode that we just watched. Do you love it? Do you hate it? You have a fun fact, you have a question, you have a funny meme, we'd love to see it, but keep it to three to five sentences about a paragraph. And there's a chance right now right here on the air. Josh and I are going to read your take and respond to it and talk about it. So, please sign up today. patreon.com/target audience.
Let us know your take on Star Trek.
>> All right, you got to start out with this one. This is pretty funny. Matchick Jose Quark pretending to know all about Earth culture based on the four things he knows is like me trying to bluff my way through a conversation about wrestling just based on watching target audience. Oh yeah, I've been watching wrestling for many, many years. I know all about it. Bumps, heels, baby faces, hot shots. It's quite a fascinating sport you wrestlers have here.
[laughter] >> That's great.
>> Nice. Nice job.
>> That's good phenomenon. Doo doo. This had to be the shortest story pitch meeting in the history of TV. Tony Marberry and Jack Trevino. Quote, "Quirk, Ram, and Nog are the Roswell aliens." And then ISB and Robert Hood Wolf sold. [laughter] Yeah. And I'm glad that they didn't try to like hide that reveal until the end or something. I'm glad they just like got it right out of the way about the Roswell thing because if I mean it could have been cute if they tried to hide it until the end in like a Quantum Leap type style. Uh, I got quantumly vibes at first from it, but uh I'm glad they uh just acknowledged the whole time what was going on.
>> Right [laughter] below that for the Explorer, Nog is going to nuke Josh.
>> What does [laughter] that even mean?
We're in Cleveland. Oh. Oh, okay. Okay.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'd welcome it. Oh, Dr. Pilaski points out the return of toos actor Charles Napier as the Grizzle General. Great guest performances all around in one of my all-time favorite Farangi Shenanigans episodes. Also an all-time favorite time travel episode.
This was an instant classic when it aired in one of my favorites on rewatch.
Also a NOG episode. A+ if not S tier.
I'm definitely [clears throat] not that strong on it, but are you looking up what he was in toos?
>> Yes. No, he died in 2011. RIP. I [ __ ] knew it.
He was one of the guys in the way to Eden.
>> He was one of the hippies.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, >> performer. Hey out there.
>> Nice. So, of course, I was soon as he said to episode, all I can think was what episode could that be? It can't be the [ __ ] the hippie episode. Yeah. Is he the main guy? Is that him?
>> Yeah, I remember that. Yeah.
>> Oh, that's [ __ ] crazy.
>> That's hilarious.
>> Yeah, that doesn't fit him at all. He was born to play the guy he played here.
I think TC Green put it perfectly for me at least. Maybe you as well. Another Frankie episode that won't win any awards, but damn if it isn't a good a fun watch.
>> Yeah, there you go. Yeah, that I would agree with that.
Won't win any awards. [laughter] >> Yeah, I don't think this is winning any of the Emmys. Yeah. Best episode. Little green men.
And the X-Files and uh the XFiles crew and the DS9 crew look at each other by and then yeah, Colaxia. With all the hate that past tense got, I'm curious how how differently this one will be received.
I mean, you couldn't think of a of a more different time travel episode. I mean, it literally >> this is night and day difference.
>> Literally night and day in terms of uh the purpose, what they're doing, >> execution, >> everything about it is is completely different. Uh let's start off with they timeraveled to 1947, the past to us, you know, not 1995. So that right there, if they had landed in 1995, even if they didn't do the whole whatever, if they had landed in 1995, I would have gone h cuz you know, to did it and it was like a meme when they kept doing it, like it's it's the 20th century Earth and it's just 60s backlot. And even then, we kind of groaned about it. Um, but at least it was like a meme, you know, and it was like 60s Star Trek. So it's like there's no excuse to do the '9s. So I'm glad they went back to the past even for us or even for people at that time, the 40s, you know, just don't go to current day. Go to the 1500s. Go to 2500. I don't care. Just don't go to the current day.
>> Oh, that takes effort.
>> Tin Man 7B9. You can stop watching X-Files now. DS9 revealed the truth before Muller and Skully did. [laughter] >> Even though they didn't because just like the X-Files, the government's going to bury it. He said, "All we found was a crashed weather balloon."
>> Crashed weather balloon. That's right.
Now I'm picturing that famous uh I wasn't an EBE when they're the shark tank.
>> Yeah. Now picture Moulder like yelling at Deep Throat about the Frankie the little green man. [laughter] Yeah. Yeah.
Uh Kolamini. Oh god. Another Star Trek Cold War story. We can hear the boys now. We get it. Cold War was a thing.
That said, this really is a fun harmless adventure. I love that the tone never strays. Sn gets to shine in a few moments. Oda's arrival was a wellplanted surprise when I first saw this. Giving this one an A for aliens invading Cleveland.
I can stick with that. Yeah. And obviously I know Colin Media is joking there, but yeah, except they actually told a story and didn't just rely on, oh, hey, the Cold War exists. Hey, Roswell was a thing. If the whole plot was, hey, Roswell's a thing, isn't that funny? No, it would have gotten old. The fact that they made that reference once and then told us a story.
>> Told a story. Television show where their job is to tell a story. It's weird.
>> Star Trek 6 told a story. Yeah, it wasn't good.
>> There's exceptions to the rule.
[laughter] Mhm.
>> Pretty sure Colam meani also actually agrees that Star Trek 6 is overrated, by the way. So, I'm not talking to him specifically when I say that.
>> Yeah.
>> A little bit of a defector here because I do see mostly positive takes on this one. Kingpin 124. Don't get me wrong, I love this episode. Is good fun, but after many rewatches, I wish they put more into the sets or locations. It feels like most of the episode takes place in a tiny clinic room or in another small dark room. I know we can't have them walking down the street in public, but my one criticism is that the episode feels cramped in those locations. And I think that's what part of what got to me as well when I talked about earlier it just being on this base is like even within the base we see them like when they pull up in the military jeep and stuff at the end like that's like really fun. Uh but most of it is just like them in this clinic room for like a really long time and it started to wear a bit thin on me and then they get moved to the interrogation room which is another small dark room. It's not the end of the world. It's not going to make the episode bad but it's just something that it's like I I won't lie like I got a little bit bored during it.
Like when I wasn't constantly laughing when the jokes weren't you know hilarious. It was kind of just like, okay, okay. So, it wore on me a little bit in that way, too.
>> It's like, what do you do, though? Can't have him out there walking. I mean, it was cool to see him riding the Jeep for a couple minutes, if that, but >> what what are you going to do?
>> Counter Fallon. As someone who was born and raised in Roswell, New Mexico, I can confirm this is how it happened.
>> Well, there you go. That's all you need.
[laughter] That's all you need. And, uh, born and raised in Roswell is pretty awesome.
That's one of those locations that's like, "Oh, I wonder what it's like there." You know what I mean? Just because of all of the >> obviously Roswell is known for that one thing, but I mean, not that one thing. I don't want to sound like that, but it's like that's what it's known for. So, it's like, "Oh, imagine living there."
And it's like there's a few other locations like that. Uh like Death Valley >> where the Undertaker's from.
>> Yeah. Where the Undertaker [laughter] lives. Yeah. Yeah. No, but those cities that have like one big event in history.
>> Yeah.
>> And then you go visit it and like that's what they're known for.
>> Uh Salem.
>> Oh, yeah. Salem would be one. Yeah, I wanted to go to Salem. A couple years ago, we were thought about going and then Oh, we just didn't work out that year. So, but that's somewhere that'd be cool to go. Yeah. Cities like that that it's like, oh, people do live there.
>> Yeah. And we can go there and have it a writeoff because it was featured in the Star Trek TAS episode, so therefore we can put it on the channel. There we go.
[laughter]
