Greene masterfully reframes the end of life as a final psychological frontier rather than a mere biological failure. His synthesis of Jungian insight and neuroscience offers a sophisticated, dignified perspective on our ultimate transition.

The Experience of Dying I Robert GreeneAdded:
I have an exercise that's a little bit frightening in which I'm trying to make you experience your own dying. What it feels like what happens to the brain as things start dissolving. What happens to the body? What happens to your mind?
Strange things go on as the brain is dying. And I'm trying to take you through that process as you lie down on the floor and you feel yourself dying.
And then at some point I have you at literally I've died. Okay, it's gone.
And then I ask you to walk outside on the street as if you're a ghost, as if you're dead. and you've been granted one last time to walk out and you're seeing things. This is the last time I'm going to see the sky. This is the last time I'm going to see a tree or a bird.
Suddenly, things look very different for you. Literally, it's an experience. It's a physical and brain and body and spiritual experiences. We think of death as just an event. It's just a medical problem. It's just something you're alive and then you're dead. But no, it's an experience. You're conscious as you're dying. What is that experience like? It's an awesome, amazing experience. And I talk in there about Carl Jung had a near-death experience in in the 40s. He's a brilliant writer.
He's very conscious. He's very aware.
And he describes it in such detail. He says he experienced death from the inside. And it's not the same as death from the outside. And from the outside it looks like you're just dying, but from the inside you're being reborn. And so I'm trying to give you that sensation in that particular
