This is a brilliant demonstration of how fundamental physics and skilled craftsmanship can correct manufacturing incompetence. It proves that a deep understanding of tool geometry is far more valuable than a premium price tag.

We Turned a $60 Axe Into a Splitting BeastAdded:
Good day, friends. Luke, what's going on? They have built this upside down.
So, we're going to give Doobie Dublinsk a little company. I love this axe. It feels really good in the hands. This does not. There needs to be inexpensive axes on the market. We're going to we're going to show you how you can make this better. So, we're going to buy this.
Friends, we have a new friend.
And friends, I'm going to tell you something. Grant, if you're watching, well done. Straight up. Well done.
>> We have to break the sacks in, Lukey.
With the same spirit that Doobie Dublinsky came here. We're on a shorter handle. We're quite a distance from the old grow stump. I'm thinking straight up.
I'm just not even sure what to say about this.
Probably a quadriplet.
>> I think so.
>> Let's do it.
Okay, that was actually first try.
>> We just pulled in the driveway.
>> When you look at that, what happens to you >> kind of >> you get an awkward feeling.
>> Something doesn't feel right.
>> Yeah. You get you get you get an awkward feeling. I I know you do. And I'll I'll tell you why is because it is a wonderful idea. It's just someone didn't direct them properly. They didn't they they weren't directed properly. They they didn't have the right people in the development stages. They just for some reason something went wrong. They put they they did this wrong. They did it completely wrong.
>> Did you hear that?
>> Oh, that doesn't sound good.
>> No, it did it did it when it went down there, too. I'm telling you. And you know what that is, don't you?
>> I don't.
>> It's this collar.
>> Okay.
>> It's It's the caller. I'll I'll bet you, Luke. I'll bet you.
>> Oh, by the way, Luke, >> listen to this. Listen to it. It's making a It's making a noise.
This is all wrong. I I What's going on? What?
>> Oh, >> what is it? That caller? I don't know.
>> It has to be that corner, Luke.
>> Doesn't sound like one piece.
>> Well, it sounds like a broken handle.
>> Oh, wait.
>> No, it's the head. Listen.
Oh, look.
Wow.
>> Right out of the Right off the store shelf. But right off the store shelf.
That's That's just Listen, here's the deal. It's wood and steel. This is not uncommon. It's just not uncommon with this style of big box store axes. It's just not. It's so not uncommon. But I'm gonna I'm gonna give you something straight in the eyeballs.
You're not seeing that here and you will not see that here. This is a freaking hang, man. These guys got their hang down, man. They do. Grant. I I'm a fan.
Oh, I'm a fan. It's solid. You can even see a little crack in the heartwood right there.
>> This is Dude, th this is bad.
>> So bad.
>> It It's awful.
>> Yeah. So, check this out. I I'll be straight. I don't like the handle.
Okay. So, you you you see what they've done here. You can you can literally see what they've done.
They have kind of destroyed the uh the pattern.
>> It totally has.
>> Look it.
>> Yeah, >> that's what this is supposed to be.
>> Yeah.
>> And they've done it upside down.
>> They've actually done it upside down.
But my question now is, is it smaller here than it is up here?
Right. like a hung axe.
>> 238.
>> Okay.
>> 223.
>> Yeah.
>> So, they've they've So, now you've got if you want to hang this, if if you want to keep this like this, Luke, it's to me it's a it's it's not a good product.
It's a It's a backwards show. But, I've also hung axes like that and they've been fine.
>> Me, too. It's just it's not it's not how it's supposed to go. That's all. That's how that's supposed to go. Like that.
>> Yep.
>> That's how that's supposed to be.
>> Yeah.
>> Grind this off.
>> Yep. I think so.
>> Yep. So, that's what we'll do. We're going to We're going to change this axe, friends, because really, what's it supposed to do? It's supposed to split wood. And this is this is not This is not good. They They've got this upside down. So now this, and I've talked about this so many times, that when you split wood, they had it like this. When you split wood, you're like there's level. That's level.
Look where the bit is, Luke.
>> Mhm.
>> That's not how that's supposed to be. It It's supposed to be over here. It's supposed to be actually like that. That's how you're supposed to hit the wood. Like this.
>> Look at this.
Look at that.
Looks like an axe.
>> Oh yeah, >> that looks like an axe.
>> There you go.
>> And it it feels like one. This is crazy.
>> Look how they sold it, Freds. And they were determined because they even put a collar on it. That's how determined they were. So, we're taking an axe that was wrong in everything. Completely wrong in everything. And really won't work that well. To be honest, it won't, friends.
You definitely won't maximize your game with it.
Who's your machine shop daddy?
>> Oh my.
Who needs to do the finish grinding? I mean, she's done.
>> You don't need no grinding after that program. But speaking of that, if you don't have the grinders, if if you don't have the grinders, friends, right, you fall back on the old school, right?
And just go to town.
Right.
That's not bad, Luke.
>> Now it's actually starting to look like an axe.
>> It's starting to look like an axe now.
So, we've done pretty well.
>> Kind of looks cool, doesn't it?
>> Yeah.
So, what I'll do now, Luke, as you can see the profile, right?
>> Yep.
>> So, this is horrifying.
>> I'm going to turn it into something that someone can use >> and and and you know, I might even shame these and make it something that that is workable for somebody.
There it is. There it goes.
Look. Look at this.
That's how that's supposed to be.
I'll I'll get rid of that. Can you see that?
>> Yeah. Yeah. It's bad. It's like 45 degrees.
>> It is 45°. So, we're going to change all that. And I think what I'll do instead of this being this, friends. I I don't know where they come up with this stuff.
I don't I don't know where they come up where they think that this is cool that I I'm not I'm not sure. Right.
Right. There. So, you're you're not I'm going to I'm going to change this drastically, Luke. I'm actually going to I'm going to go for something like this.
The girth is there, Luke. I can turn This is going to be scary. This axe is going to be like super scary.
>> It's long, isn't it?
>> It is a bit long, but you'll probably >> I'm going to I'm going to take it I'm going to take it back, Luke.
>> It'll help because it's so flat and skinny for so long.
>> It will. And I'm going to turn it into a long convex grind. It's going to be a lot of work, but I'm going to do it because this I I hate to say like this slooping up this action.
I I know for a fact you're going to get hung on these. You You just are. You're going to get hung on these. So, why not turn this into a tool that is smoother to work with, right? I mean, I'm not going to hang it and then unhang it again to see the difference and show the difference because I know the difference. I've swung fiskers. I've swung axes like these. They work, but they do get hung when you're trying to get it out of stringy wood that's holding it together. These aren't these aren't the greatest, but they do work.
But look at that work loop. Come off nice, doesn't it?
>> Very nice >> zip cut.
That's how an axe supposed to look. Like that. This is the bottom of the axe.
And now you can actually hook wood with it, Luke. Again, whereas you try to hook wood with a flat, you you can't do it.
You got to like This is This is That's how that's going to be. So, now that we look at that, Luke, now it looks like an axe, doesn't it?
>> Yep.
>> I'm just talking to Tin Man. What are you doing here, young fella?
>> We're back. We got to finish the build.
>> Well, I wish you guys do something else.
You mean back on this?
>> Oh, yeah. Well, I've been moving on. I got >> No, no, no. You can't move on yet.
>> No, no, no. This is This is new garbage.
This is what Have you seen? Have you even Do you know what this is? These things. Look at my dear friend. Like, look at me. I'm all over the map, but when something comes across like So anyways, this was found by a metal detector and you can see that this was obviously the upside because water pulled, right? This is where this was down. Guaranteed this was down. But look, look at this, my friend. Look at this, Luke.
Okay. Not not just like all the way. The whole axe, Luke. The whole axe. Not just that. Look it.
Look at that, Luke.
>> It's the wood bullet.
>> Yes, it is. It is actually the wood bullet. This is where I took I had axes.
I've talked about the predecessors of the wood bullet. We never had this stuff here. We just didn't have it. So, I've got a little secret spot for my predecessors and I keep them over there.
There's one here. This is one of the predecessors right here. This is one of the predecessors to the wood bullet. And look at how worn down. I think this is like a Yankee pattern or something. I don't know what they freaking call this, but when this showed up on my door and I hafted it on a Killinger freaking 32 classic.
Look it. Where do you think the name wood bullet came from?
Because this is a bullet. It's a bullet.
No matter where it gets in the wood, it's not getting stuck no matter where you go. Look at Look at this one, Luke.
>> Holy.
>> Oh, I know. It's crazy.
>> So, there was some certain axes that helped me with the wood bullet, and it was only after swinging them. So, I call this I call this the top plate. I call this the top plate. This I'm just using my own verbiage like I always do, friends, like shlank. Okay, this is the top plate. That's just what I call a top plate. Well, if you look at the top plate here, you're not seeing any convexness beyond it, are you?
>> No, not really.
>> Like a little here and there. Barely.
>> Yeah.
>> But it isn't there. But let me show you.
It is there. It's just minuscule. Luke, see how the little spaces are at the end there? That's That's what you want. You want some of that. Let me show you this.
Where did it go? It's actually convex.
>> Concave there. Or >> Yeah, concave. Pardon me. But if you come here, you've got a convex edge. So you're you're still convex, but it doesn't go for that long. So glorious axe. Glorious axe. Let's put this aside before I lose my brain. We were at Canadian Tire the other day, friends.
And I'm always talking about freaking This is where I live, right? I I I got to be honest because there's nothing made these days that's going to do the job as good as once you swing or use a good tool or or use a good instrument, a good trumpet, a good set of drums, a good guitar. There's no comparison to it. You you you want to use that tool all the time. You can't go back. I I can't go back. The best thing we had back in the day was an RVA. This axe was sent out of the factory to the to the Canadian Tire shelves like that. That's how it was sent. There was eight of them hanging on the rack there, Luke.
>> Yep.
>> And they were all like that.
That's just wrong. It's just wrong.
We researched the axe to see if there was some kind of reasoning they had it.
I think they just screwed up. That's all I can think of. I think they just screwed up. Take a fish. Boom. Right.
>> Looks like an axe, doesn't it?
>> Mhm.
>> There's a reason they're a little bit hooked here, friends. On the bottom, not the top. The top has a little hook. It's there. You can see it. It's there.
That's the proper hook on top.
Right there. There. There's axes are designed. That's why I really like this style. I use this like crazy Luke. That bottom like a Hudson's Bay. Yeah. You know, Hudson's Bay pattern. This axe.
>> Wa. That one's 5 lb.
>> It is 5 lb.
>> They only said 4 and 1/2 on their website.
>> 2 kgs right there.
>> So, it says 4 and 1/2, but it's actually five. And not only that, we cut that off, which is a quarter of a pound.
>> Wow.
>> That's a quarter of a pound. Watch the zero.
Watch.
So, isn't that interesting? So, again, that is five pounds, Luke.
>> Isn't that crazy?
>> That's crazy.
>> So, that doesn't surprise me though, Luke, with these companies. Okay. I'll tell you what's going to happen when I'm done with it, though. So, this is what we're going to do. I'll just get to the straight goods. Listen, I want to show folks what you can do with a $60 axe.
Canadian Tire, Yard Works, which I think we all know is a very low-end uh tool company, aren't they, Luke? They're just out there. You're walking through, you need something, you're camping, Yard Works, right? It's not no Hoffman blacksmithing or, you know, blacksmithing. We're going to change this axe and we're going to make it a very usable, fun axe to use. One bevel bigger than the other, Luke.
>> Yeah.
>> The bottom bevel is like twice the size.
>> Longer. Yes. Okay. So, for starters, what we're going to do, I'll be interested to see what kind of sparks come off of this thing.
Okay, watch what happens.
There's a lot of girth here, Luke. Isn't that crazy?
>> Yeah.
>> Already so much better.
>> Yes. Already so much better. Oh, yeah.
Look at that.
>> Yep.
>> So, we'll go to the other side now. But notice my angle. Notice what I'm doing, friends. I'm not going like this. I'm not doing this. That's what they did.
See, I'm not doing that. I'm doing this.
Have a look. See, look at how nice and even my angle was. Luke, I've done this so many times now, but look how much work we've got to get so far. We still got to go a lot. So, we're going to carry on, Luke.
Look closely, Luke. I'm still not on the edge. Just a little teeny bit right there.
>> Not even.
>> Not even. So, just be careful as you go, friends. Just take your time. But look at this, Luke.
>> Yeah. You got enough light.
>> So much better. Yeah.
>> Top.
>> Wow.
>> Okay.
It's not needed. Luke, no.
in the bottom too.
>> So you can see it's convex there. See that? Or concave.
>> It's concave there.
>> We don't want that. I I don't. And we've got the girth to make it a good all round axe. Remember friends, I'm in a situation where this is a this has been a godsend. This really has. You don't need and and I'm going to the only reason I'm going to show this is because I come from very humble beginnings and I I would not have I I probably just well I know I would have bought them all. I I would not have bought this axe back in the day. I just wouldn't have done it.
But I am going to show you that there's other ways to do this. You could it would be a horrible escapade, but you could do it with a hand file. But I wouldn't suggest it. I would go to grandpa's shop or go to a buddy's shop.
Go go go go meet somebody. Go go go go camaraderie with your uncle or your dad or somebody. Get into their shop. Take the axe. Get the proper tools if you don't have them.
>> Angle grinder with a flap wheel is great. Right.
>> That's it. Yeah. Like they they work great.
Look at the shine, too.
Look at that.
So, that's just another good tool. I just wanted to show that for a second.
Now, these I have found these I've used these axes in the past where they put this little slope up and I'm only doing one side at once because I want to show you that it is not needed. They they lull you into thinking that this this system works. I don't like them. The Fiskers actually gets stuck as well.
Fiskers is a great split knax, but it's got a good profile. So, you see what's going on? Look, you can see where we're going, right?
>> Mhm. So, the only pocket we have on this whole ax is right here. There's a slight pocket right there. It's not going to be the end of the world. I'm going to see how we end up here. But this is whatever. It's fine. I just don't I didn't want that great big hump. And I'll take some more of this down as we go.
So, we're going to do You don't have to film that whole other side. We're going to do the exact same thing to the other side, friends. And uh we've been going 15 minutes. So, with the right tools, it doesn't take that long. $69.
What you're looking for, friends, in an axe to turn into an allpurpose good axe is girth. You need you need some girth. And what I mean by that, Luke, come on out and show you show you this little guy here. This we don't have we don't have that here.
This is Dublinsk's little baby sister we found. We found Dublinsky was putting a good chip in, but she's been working alone for a long time. So, we thought it was time for Dublinsky to call in her younger sister. And this is But this is what you don't have the option here.
Look at this is I I'm I'm going to say this wholeheartedly, Luke. If you're looking for a little chopping axe, friends, to take camping or or or you want to buy a cheap axe to go out and start learning axemanship and learning how to like be safe with an axe and learn accuracy and how to chop with an axe. This is fantastic. And limming and bucking. Chopping firewood is one aspect of axemanship.
limming, bucking, felling, it all intertwines into this thing called axemanship. This is a fantastic little Luke. Are you looking at that sucker?
>> Isn't that sweet?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> So, I would do a little I would do a little work here. Thin this out. We may turn this into a nice little axe. But anyway, we don't have this option here.
That was my point.
>> It's looking good. Actually, >> it's not looking bad, Luke.
You you you can't deny that, Luke.
>> That's a good axe now.
>> I kind of like it now.
>> Like, I I get it, friends. Honestly, I understand. You're out at the the Canadian Tire or the Home Depot or the I understand it. And you're looking for a cost-effective tool and they lull you.
They lull you into thinking, "Hey, and I get it. It It can work." I'm not saying this doesn't work. And if you've been using the tool like this and you love it, it's because it does work. It does work, but but you can make this a much more effective axe all around axe by doing this. And I'm just giving you an idea how to do it. That's all. It's all I'm saying to you.
Get some silence in this place. Hey, what's that?
No way.
Oh, it is one of these things. It's one of these. Have you ever seen one of these before, Luke?
So Ly Take a really good look at what happened. Flashback to before and after here. And And not bad, Luke. Is it?
>> No, it looks nice.
>> Like it's not bad. We're nearly convex.
There's a teeny bit of concavveness there and there.
I think we were at like 60° before.
>> Bullnose.
>> 22.
>> We're in 22 in the hole.
>> Beautiful.
>> 22 in the hole. 225. And actually, there's play, Luke. And we're in the hole. when we're in the hole and the burr is pretty. So you're 22 23 degrees just beautiful. Beautiful.
Now remember friends, you're going to wear this down. It's cheap steel Luke, right? It's cheap steel.
>> Tasmanian pattern, right?
Big Tazzy.
What just happened? Similar.
>> Pretty much the same.
>> Mhm.
Except for that, which I think that's going to help us >> now that especially because it can't get hooked on that when you're pulling it out and rocking it back and forth. I'm actually I'm kind of excited about this loop to be honest with you.
>> So that feels to me about an hour.
>> Yeah, it's been about an hour. It feels like about an hour to get that to where we needed it to be and to make it an axe. A real axe. They've already done all the work for you. They've stamped it out. They've tempered it.
You get to make it your own for $69.
So for a hundred bucks, you know, you buy a good handle, Luke is is there like is there a problem with that? I don't see a problem with that.
>> I think it looks fantastic.
It even looks like it's got some kind of a weird crust.
>> Mhm.
>> We turned it into some medieval thing.
You know, flagship handle. I've got other options. And as a matter of fact, you know what this is? This is one of the original wood bullet handles that didn't make the grade. They were from a guy. He gave us about a 100 handles.
Josh, I think. Josh.
Oh, so >> that could work on there, >> dude. Let me just let me just show you.
There's nothing. This is a good handle.
A really good handle.
>> So, let me show you. And it's And it's a modest handle.
This is an experimental axe.
>> Look at that, Luke.
>> Right.
I don't like it.
>> Too >> See this?
>> Too bit heavy.
>> It's borderline. It it it just it I think because the flagship hooks back, Luke, it'll make this thing. So, here's a very interesting thing. Watch this, friends. Watch.
See how the axe is sitting loop? See how it's it's diving nose forward? It wants to lay flat or it wants to it wants to dive.
>> Yeah.
>> Not a ton, but it does. Okay. We're we're we're almost all the way on the axe handle, just so you know. So, watch this.
I happen to have instantly.
Instantly.
>> Look at the axe.
>> Mhm.
>> It's laying flat.
You know why that is? It's because of this.
That's the handle. Now, remember that the back of that handle's broken off, Luke.
>> Yeah.
>> But by nature, it sits further back.
Yes, it does. This will make this axe.
This is why I actually I'll be honest. I was heavy into the tazzies, Luke, when I was doing these handles and I was hanging a lot of Tazzies and I I hooked this back. I hooked it back because of this very thing right here in my hands.
The the the debate is over.
>> And the grain's straight up and down, isn't it?
>> Yep.
>> Oh my goodness.
>> I know. I'm giving this axe away, friends. Did you know that? I didn't tell you that part about this, did I?
>> Yeah. I'm giving this axe away because there's nothing like giving, man. Woman and child there. There just isn't.
There's nothing like giving.
I just uh so we're in a difficult situation friends because the axe head was well it was upside down and just so we could re revamp here's our here's our issue. They put the big end they put they punched the eye upside down essentially is what happened. So here's here's our issue.
Here is the top. It's supposed to be but okay. See that Luke?
>> Mhm. It's 237 at >> that's their top, our bottom.
>> Their top, our bottom. So, the way they had it hung was like this, which is correct in the eye, but not in the axe.
So, as you can see, this is quite a bit smaller.
>> Mhm.
>> There it is. 225. So, that's the issue we have. We're hanging it. We're just We're hanging it. It's a It's a fun project. The only other option to do, and we thought about it, friends, is take this down like this, Luke, knock that off and and change the radius. Drop the radius down and hang it normal, which actually could still be done. Let's see what happens.
Okay, that that went down. That went down a lot. Yeah. And we're going to end up with a gap at the back. There's just no way around it now from what I can understand. But look at the axe, right?
So I I sure like that the way that feels it there with that high belly and it's a long towed axe, right? So this is what happens when you get on some cockamame idea. Holy cow bucking. I mean I I will say this, the best work was done here.
And I and I and I I will also say I will also say that if I had have been thinking on the way down, I'd have left myself a little bit of woodwork here to hide the gap or figured out some way because we're we're upside down, friends, right? You guys know what I mean? You guys look look it look at it. It just goes in the top of the axe. Just right. So, that's as far as that goes by hand. But if you hang it how I've hung it, right? Big end first.
Look at the gap that's needed to get it in there. You see, you got all this room because of that. Okay, let's let's finish this project, friends. This crazy crazy axe head. So, that's what we've got. So, I could I could thin this out to get a wedge in there to make it work better. And it would almost be a smart idea to thin that out to get a pound so I can pound a wedge in there. I think I may do that. I showed you the curve I had there. I did take wood off the outside of the axe to make room for that. And I had to shape it like we always do. But what an interesting ordeal. So, I'm going to crack some glue in it. Okay. Okay. And then I put it on the I put it on the wedge like this and like this. And that's it. And then I rub it in with my finger like this. Let's put this together. Here we go. Right.
Right.
So that's that's I I almost feel like I should take it out and thin it out cuz we're up against the edges already.
I could I still could tap that out of here. I could. And I think I'm gonna Look at this, friends.
I didn't like it. I tapped it out of there and I'm going to thin it out. So, I wiped the glue off and I'm taking it down.
There we go. I just thinned her down, friends. See? Right there. And there.
And I'm putting glue back in it. And we're going for it again.
Okay, I'm liking this better. I'm already liking it better, friends. We're back on course.
I'm going to pound it home.
Oh yeah. So that's what we got.
What's that?
It's Baby Dublinsk.
>> So, you see that where it's right in here?
>> Yep.
>> That's the flexing spot. See? Oh, let's see if we can break it. Hear that cracking?
>> Yep.
>> It's the head right there.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> It's because it's This is This is the big side, right?
>> Yeah, >> it is.
>> Yes.
So, you've followed this thing along.
You've seen what happened in the video.
We were we've we've Luke and I were thinking about Kai Bosching this whole thing, including the whole vid because we did that whole video.
>> Yep.
>> In Canadian Tire, the whole story, >> but they've punched this eye, friends, like it's big at the bottom. So we flipped it. You saw the whole thing. So it didn't end up fantabulous. But you know what?
Old creaky.
It's old creaky. I mean, will it chop wood? 100%.
>> Well, it's tight up top there, but >> you've got movement down here because the eye is bigger here.
>> Yeah. Even like to fill out because it's bigger here than it is there. So even to like fill out the space from there to there, you know.
>> I know.
>> Yeah.
>> You're you're at that's why axes are made with a smaller eye on the bottom and bigger on the top. So we've fought this whole thing the whole time we fought this >> old caky.
Oh, she's moving harder now.
But it doesn't break. Guess right at Old Creeky didn't work.
Old creaky didn't work. Had to We had to Look at that beautiful handle. Out the door, Lkey.
But watch this, Luke. Watch what we're about to do now.
>> I got the wedge down there.
>> Yep.
>> I don't know what we're doing, but we're in deep, friends, aren't we, Luke?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> We're in deep. So, so I've changed my com my composure here. I I don't want to fight that huge eye at the bottom anymore, Luke. I'm going to I'm actually going to change this axe. And And it's actually going to work out very good.
And I'm going to show you what we're going to do right here, right now.
This is the right caller.
Interesting how they even Right.
>> Yeah.
>> They did this upside down, didn't they?
>> Yep.
>> They built this ax upside down. Really strange.
We're going to transform this thing completely.
can go any way now, can it? Yeah.
>> So, that's going to be the top of the ax. It's already coming.
>> It's already looking like it can work.
>> Yeah.
>> Little bit more. Hey, look.
>> Yep.
We got a change grit. Watch what happens here. This will be interesting. Old Creek is getting another shot at life.
And the fatter the grit, the less heat.
The lower the grit, the less the heat.
Look at >> Yep.
>> changing.
>> Totally. Totally changing.
Look good.
Heat. Heat.
This is going to be better because we shortened it. It's going to be fatter.
Luke.
>> Yeah, I think so.
Little bur there.
>> Yep.
Coming.
This is going to be a split match. Luke, we're nearly there. Oh, freaky.
I think we call her old creepy still.
>> Yeah.
Oh, look really good.
Okay, we're almost there. You can just see the face plate a little bit still.
This is looking good. I'm glad we shortened it, Luke.
There it is. I just straightened out that line, Luke. You know this one?
>> Yep.
>> That's crazy Luke to me. Absolutely crazy. Let's finish it up.
I want it sharply.
Yeah, like that. See, we didn't even go to the edge that time, though.
Wow.
Okay, let's check this out, Luke. See what we got. I'd like around 22 would be nice.
>> We got 25 deep in the hole.
225.
We're there.
>> Yep.
>> So, we're actually there, Luke, for a good rugged cheap steel. And remember, we can't go too thin. It's not very good steel from what we know. So, right.
>> Looks good.
>> It looks like an axe again with a little hook at the bottom. We changed the dimensions. We changed everything. So, let's do one more finish. Actually, you know what? We'll we'll go like this for the finish for for the finish grind.
Let's grab a 120. Okay, let's go.
Not bad.
Burr all the way across. I don't mind this at all. Root, look up and down that.
>> Not bad.
>> Not bad. Looks good.
>> So, now we'll go on the So, what what people This is how you get your convexness with these tight. This is a good way to get a nice strong convex edge is like this. See how that ends up on there? It It gives you a good convex edge.
Look at that.
Wow.
Luke, we've almost lost that little divot, buddy.
We're done.
So, it'll probably end up about 23 24 because that does that. That's what happens because it kind of rounds it a bit, which is fine. But, you know what I like doing? Look at how nice that ends up. That's not a bad finish.
>> Nope.
>> I I do like doing this one, Luke.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> But we still got a burr here. I might just go old school here real quick because of the style of the axe. I'm going to do one of my old tricks I keep in the I keep in the back 40 and I use it every now and again for a for a cheaper project. It's how I get a micro bevel.
Note the angle. Note the angle.
You see the burr, Luke? You got it there? There's the burr. Just look at the shine on this side. See it?
It's actually gone. Not fast.
Okay. So, now you'll see micro bevel.
It's a a fast and efficient way for a good strong edge on Look at it. It's beautiful, Luke. Look at that little guy. And the burr's gone. And it's it's not hair popping because it's going to be a We're going to use this axe, Luke, to beat the rocks up. This is that axe that we're This is going to be a $60 axe, friends. The burr's gone, Luke.
It's exactly what we want. It's right on the money, bud.
This is going to be good. It is. It's going to be good. So, what I like to do just because we're at this stage, Luke, is I'm just going to use this just to quickly finish the edges this this up a little bit.
>> Just just real quickly.
I like it. Okay. So, what a freaking transformation.
See that little move flat.
>> Let me just see here.
>> See how how much we need to take more.
We got to take way more.
>> So, but that looks about right coming down there, doesn't it? Yeah, like we need more.
>> Mhm.
>> So, so we are going to come back a little because you don't want that too forward. Remember this is a long bidded axe. See that microb glistening in the light, Luke?
>> Mhm.
>> Okay. So, we need to take more. So, we're going to pull from the front a bit because we've got a long bidded axe, but we've also got a curve in our handle.
So, this is a come see comes saw build, right, Luke? Yep.
>> Good.
>> Mhm.
>> Okay. Good.
I think we're actually really close. So that dead squared it right there because I took a little bit more off of this side just to kick this this center line over and I had the space at the top for it to allow to do that. So this is nice gap edge here, Luke.
>> Yeah, it's even.
>> Yeah. So this is starting to this is start this is actually starting to feel really solid in the hand now. And now you won't do this. See, you won't you won't get that up and downer now. And then the wedge will fill that. So this is this is actually coming up quite nice.
Right.
>> Interesting what that did.
>> Yeah.
>> I think I will. I think I'll land that right down on that shoulder. This is coming up really, really nice. What a transformation.
Yeah, that's what we're up against right there.
So, if a guy's got $60 and a little bit of time on his hands, Luke, you can make yourself We're home, bud.
>> Mhm. See that teeny little flat? I bet you when we knock this off to put a curve in it, we're going to see a little space right there. She's tight, tight, tight, Luke, all the way around.
>> What a big piece of steel.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, that that's a nice fit, too. Come on.
>> So, one final cleanup, a curve, and we are actually going to end up right on that. Yep.
>> And I think I'm actually done there. I'm just going to clean it up.
They will make her kind of attractive, don't they? Oh, yeah.
So, we got to put a curve in her.
>> Yep.
>> And then hang it.
>> Yep.
>> I mean, it's it's old creaky.
I'm in a hanger.
>> And we're talking on the shoulder, dude.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Nothing like a no B. Oh, look at that.
Look.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Gone.
>> Gonzo.
It just it just takes that time. Now we take some of this off. Luke, I'm going to do a hang high. Now we got to make our wedge.
>> Oh yeah, >> that's going to open up. Beautiful.
There's a deadly chunk. This is where we go by eye.
Not that much.
A fair bit of material here. So, I'm going to go for it, Luke. I'm going to go go fat. And this this thing spread.
Like look at this.
>> Right.
>> Oh yeah.
>> We're going to get some spread here. So I'm I'm comfortable. Although it's pretty fat, isn't it? Let's put a little of this in there, shall we?
>> It is this body. Stuff's nuts.
>> Yeah, >> this stuff's crazy.
>> Pretty forgivable.
>> Is it ever? You could wall up on it.
>> We We're putting so much care into this $60 axe.
And it's because see that? Did you see what I did there?
Look it.
>> Okay, let's take it out of here and smash this sucker down.
That's actually crazy, Luke.
Nice little added touch.
The over strikes again.
Dude, we put so much effort into this axe, it's not even funny. Here's here's for the Daniel Cookbook believers.
Dead square in the middle of the handle or the the head.
>> Yeah, the radius. I call that the radius. So that when you split wood, the way they sold this, Luke, if you can pan back again in the video. What's going on? No, no. Tell me what you think happened there. The way they sold this on the shelf at Canadian Tire was the bet was running away.
What are we doing? Luke, did you did you happen to have yourself a little look at the poo?
There's old squeaky.
Oh my dear. Oh lord. What a what a what a Who does foolish things like this, Luke? I'm just here to tell folks that if you're out there looking for a a box store axe, this the only reason we bought this, if you pan back in the video, I said it right in the video, is there's girth. We had enough girth. We took those things right gone because they were con cave and we made Well, let's look at that, Luke. Let's let's now let's take a look at that this finished product.
How did we do? Oh, this looks good. Look at that.
>> Mhm.
>> That's a nice convex edge there and then straight back. So, a guy could if he wanted knock a bit of that hump off. Ah, this is a This is a We're going to destroy this axe. We're going to take it out and destroy it. That's on the shoulder, Luke.
So, that's a nice sign because Luke, do we have footage from before?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Old caky.
Okay, that's actually crazy.
>> This is harder wood in there. It is.
This is the sapwood. You can even see it in the grain. This is harder wood than this.
Oh, I know what it is, Luke.
The head's fatter.
>> Remember, we took we freaking changed this whole thing.
>> Yep.
>> We made the axe shorter and we have it fatter here. This is a split now, Luke.
That doesn't get stuck in the wood. And that was the whole goal.
Oh, it's sound. Lukey. Old Squeaky's gone.
So, >> oh my, that's different.
>> Lkey sinks an axe deeper than I do. He's stronger than I am.
>> Oh, >> that's a pretty good wallet.
>> Oh dear. Hold her.
Oh my gosh.
>> Like nothing on the back of the handle.
>> No, nothing.
$69 I think it was. Luke. Yep. The axe was $69 and we have just turned it into a crazy axe that will definitely do better than what it was off the shelf with an hour or two of your time on your tools. Get a handle. You don't need these these blacksmith heads, friends.
Like I just looked at that fella from Poland. What a guy. He's gonna send me a head and it's a Tasmanian pattern and I we looked on his website $1,000 just for the head, friends. So, these guys are I don't know what people think, but these blacksmiths, man, they putting their lives and their time into this and they're coming up with these freaking beautiful things. And this I can't wait to swing, Luke. So, >> that thing's got everything going for it.
>> This does, but I spent a lot of time on it. I actually built in the convexity.
You can see I left the center and I I actually did a bunch of work. So, let's go out here for just a second. You know, we got dooby-doo blints here. We we've also got dooby-doo blints to to show you the the difference. Like this. I can't wait to split. But friends, I'm a big proponent of of radius. So, so what I mean by that is is how this is shaped and what's the task at hand. Is the task at hand this or is it splitting firewood like Luke this is right? So right it gosh opposed to say look at doobydoo blitz look at her edge luke we've been and look at the you know so anyways I'm a radius guy I I like radius for ease of entry like that right there is wicked >> oh That that's that's wicked. And and look at these guys. Look at look at Garant.
That's a >> It's better than how Dubie came.
>> This is a good little axe. Anyway, friends, just geeking out. But let's be honest, Luke, this was fun. This was freaking fun. Look at her. Look at it. It was fun. And it looks like something out of a freaking movie or something.
>> Mhm. Yeah. It gave us some grief, but she came out nice.
>> We had old Squeaky and we decided that old Squeaky, as fun as she was, just like a bullet.
>> Yep. Full on.
>> You know, with these cheaply built axes, you you just never know what you're in for. You never know what you're in for with the eye and the punching and the and the the whole construction of the axe. I mean, look with this one. I can't believe they let that sell on the on the on the Do they think the public's that not together?
>> That's not good, Luke.
>> No.
>> And I I don't you know, I'm not trying to call nobody out. I'm trying to like yard works, guys. Just all you need to do is flip that axe upside down and punch the hole the other way and you'd be all right. Leave the collar on top.
Who cares? What's the collar for anyway?
What was this little collar for? Why was that on the axe down there? Do you think that's an overstripe collar? It's >> not protecting my >> No, it's not. It's not doing anything.
It was on the bottom of the axe. So, actually, it was down there.
>> Yeah, >> that's where it was. It was on the bottom of the axe. It was like this.
It was like that.
>> And why was that there? Something to do with the with the drop forging or however they do that. But I don't I I don't know. But that's how that was. But the reason we grabbed it was because it had those wings. It had girth that I knew that I could make it really close to being a convex style axe that won't get stuck. And by changing and it's not super convex, Luke, but look.
>> Oh yeah, she gets there.
>> See, because of this thing, but this was concave. And now it is not Luke.
It's not concave. So, let's be honest.
When you slam an axe into the wood, this is where you want your convexity.
>> So, what I'm going to do, friends, because I just feel like it. People on this channel have been following me along, and I've been doing all this crazy stuff for years, and we used to give axes away like crazy in the live feeds, and random just let axes go. and you guys have been a part of that for a long time and I'm just in the giving mood. So, keep your eye on my live feeds. I go live on Sundays at 1:00 Pacific time. So, that's like 4 in the States. Somewhere 4 or 5:00 depending 9:00, 8:00 in the UK. It seems to be a time, but we've been going live for years and you never know what can happen on a live feed. And it's random. We don't spin no wheels. It's me looking at the or Lukey and we just uh we surprise people with things sometimes. So, this is going to be part of the surprise game. This this axe that I built. That was kind of the whole purpose. We bought it to see what we could make of it. And uh I'm actually pleased with it, Luke.
>> Oh, it's unreal.
>> I'm I'm very pleased with it. It doesn't stick in the wood, I'll tell you that.
And I'm going to go out and smack this around. Anyway, keep your eye open on our live feed friends. You might be the recipient of that weird freaking thing with a handle with with 45 degrees uh run out all kinds of stuff. Wild and crazy handle and you might just take this home. We might ship it to you and it becomes your main splitting tool that you think, "Oh my gosh, this is wonderful." Stay on the lookout. Work hard. Be honest. Be kind.
Thank you for being here. See you on the next video.
