When welding, heat causes metal to stretch and pull, so welders must use a technique of welding a small section, flipping the piece, and welding the other side to prevent warping; additionally, the way welds are finished at the ends (with tapered 'fish tails') is critical because it transfers stress and cracks away from the main joint, preventing structural failure.

Wildman Put Shafin Through a Brutal Welding TestAdded:
Okay, what do you think? Pay attention to what we're doing, be kind of nice.
Hey.
I'm telling you what. Every father out there I guarantee You know you are a piece of work.
You're losing me. So, let's do this.
>> OH, I TOLD YOU WHAT. WHY DON'T YOU PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT THE [ __ ] WE'RE DOING MAYBE?
>> me to run the bar with you? I want you to pay attention. I don't care. I'm finding this out you don't care. Okay, let's go. Come on. Let's go. Anyways, guys, they're sitting on there on the pedestal of pad that we built.
Everything seems like it's cleared. I'm quite happy about that.
There's enough room here for this radiator I'm putting in there. Lot of good volunteering >> Right there there should be enough. Lot of good volunteering my time. Yeah, who fixed who fixed your tire this morning for you?
>> I said leave it right alone.
I haven't had them.
And you just couldn't help but get your little fingers in there and plug my hole.
The hole should have been [music] plugged you wouldn't HAVE BEEN HERE.
>> [laughter] >> WHAT ARE WE DOING NOW? YOU'RE LOADING THIS HERE STUFF TO GO OR WHAT?
Just like take off, baby.
Did you actually sold that to that guy?
How much did you sell them in total? For $800.
>> You're so full of You're so full of What did you get for it? $300? $200.
Good, get it out of here. It's taking up space on the shop floor. Oh, heaven forbid.
Go get your I Okay, what we're doing here it's pretty close to where it is. I set them probably probably a 32nd of an inch.
But the problem being this it's all very close to the bottom so there's not a whole lot of adjustment. I brought everything up a quarter of an inch by sliding these pads underneath of it underneath of it instead of right here buttoned up. So, I'll set the motor down on top of it. That'll lift it up.
There's a steel piece right here.
It's really close to the bottom and it's uh not quite >> [music] >> wanting to take a match up and let that coupler be straight. The fingers they got to be perfect like this. They can't be like this. They can't be like this.
They got to be just like this because the coupler it's kind of a interesting thing how this got to be just It's got to be within within 10% of being perfectly square.
So, that's what I'm doing. Give myself a little bit of wiggle room in it. You can put that on the block and do the same thing.
Go ahead and slide it in a little bit here.
Okay, is it all underneath there?
>> Yeah, it should be there. Yeah. Yeah, it just barely catches. Yeah.
There, slide it to the head.
>> Oops.
You see You see how nice it fits?
>> Yeah. You see that? That's why I found this for the motor set.
Yeah, lift that up a little bit.
There.
Slide it to the head.
Is it all underneath there?
Yep.
Because you just always make sure that it's all the way up. That's what I like.
See, it's close.
What's that? Dialed. It's real close.
Yep, there you go. Whatever you have there, it's been It's fell off. Now, I think you put it back on top of that thing.
You can tell that it's getting close.
Cuz whenever anything gets close, nothing wants to fit.
That actually looks really close, doesn't it?
What we're looking at here bull [ __ ] That's close. Dad, just to think after we get all this water out of here.
>> Here, take and grab a clamp. Right where it sits.
Grab a clamp and set that in.
Um Oh, [ __ ] Okay, guys. What we're looking at here, you may not be able to see it. The way here, the angle here.
The The distance here, the distance here.
And how this feels right here.
How the How the drive coupler is.
Right here, how it feels. Well, we'll put a straight edge on it. Across here, across here. Four points here, here, here, and on the bottom.
Put a straight edge on there.
And it'll either be like this, like this, or like this, or like this, or like this, or like this. And then we'll move it around.
We'll tack the motor in place.
Look at it. Leave it sit for a little while. Contemplate life.
And then come back and drill it and weld it into place. And then it'll probably still be in the wrong spot.
Okay, guys. We're getting close to starting this old truck.
Stay tuned. Well, guys, I'm getting close to being done.
Um I'm just sitting here today looking at the last of the things and I'm kind of getting to aligning all the pieces and parts up on this thing again. The biggest problem I have, or not the biggest problem, but the biggest challenge on this is this drive coupler right here that I put in there. To try to get this stuff to line up. It's got to be just about It's got to be just about a perfect mesh on there. If not, it'll knock out the rubber and it causes a bunch of wear issues and this It's is just It's unacceptable to have it done half-assed.
You know, my turbo I got it on. Pieces fabbed up. I'm glad that I went this way. I was going to put it right here, the turbo right here.
And I decided not to, and I went over here, which is a much, much better I much, much better place, it seems like.
And anyways, we'll all find out even whether that turbo even works on this motor. It's supposed to be good for 400 cc's to whatever. This motor here I do believe is 450 cc's.
Half a liter almost.
Um I do believe that makes a whopping somewhere around a whopping 10 horse, I do believe is what it puts out.
Uh But that motor here that come out of it was 18 horsepower, that Kohler.
It was just sacrilege to have a gas flat motor. Looks like somebody's lawnmower got crossbred with his cat, and I couldn't deal with it.
Like I say, I've got Russell Russell, the love muscle a long time ago, made me a deal for a a couple pieces, and this was one of them.
This motor was kind of discarded and chucked out in the bush.
And amazingly enough, we got it going and running, and it seems to be not too bad.
And I put this turbo on it.
And like a gumball machine, you got to love it. Whether it makes any power or not, I don't know. I really don't give a actually, I just like how it looks having a turbocharged on there. But I guarantee you it probably should make probably maybe four or five pounds of boost. If it gives me another two horsepower, that's 20%. It's only making 10 horsepower now or somewhere around there. It'll make 12 horse. And besides that, it's just cool, that's all.
You know.
Um Again the coupler here I got it sitting back enough this here pieces here all gets moved around and shuffled in the place so it's gets the right height. The radiator, there should be enough to go in here.
Uh my fan, if I can't put it in the inside, I'll put it on the outside of the vehicle right here.
And back here, I got the winch and stuff. I'm just starting to work on it here to see if I can get lines and stuff hooked up.
I had to replumb it. It had a single ram right here and I took all the plumbing off and I just cut and fit all the lines on here.
What usually would I do is I'll buy all the fittings and then the lines here as you see, I don't crimp them.
I'll bring them home, cut them, place them, get them where they are.
If they're at the wrong spot, the wrong angles, get them all sitting in there.
Then I'll come by with a paint marker and I'll take and mark them all so they line back up.
Um I don't have to worry about orientation on here because they're all straights on the ends. This here is a is a 45°. It doesn't matter because it's got a straight end on the other end so it doesn't matter. It'll line up regardless regardless of what the prodigal children say.
What do you think of these hoses and stuff back here? I just cut all this stuff and lined it up.
Looks like you're going to divorce your [ __ ] You are such a kind child. Hopefully we'll work.
Oh, you guys just can't just learn to be nice, eh? Anyways, kicking along, I've got the winch on back here finally. It's sat. I got the geometry here just about sat on this here that I got enough enough uh enough downwards force on it.
It comes down right to the bottom.
And there is another There's another 8 in of stroke that goes down. I had a conversation with one of my old old dear friends, Brian Honing, and he was laughing his ass off when he seen me doing this.
And I phoned him for a little bit of ripper uh a little bit of ripper shrifters. Yeah, that's his shape.
I bought some advice on rippers.
I thought they had to be going in the ground like maybe like a foot or something, and he started laughing at he said even on a big piece of equipment like a seven or an eight or a six or something like that. He said the ripper only goes in the ground about 8 to 10 in.
>> [music] >> It'll only rip as much as you can take and do on it, and he's been doing it for years. So, I told him my ripper went in the ground probably ABOUT 6 IN.
>> [laughter] >> AND HE SAID YEAH, I DID IT TWICE, SHAPE. ANYWAYS, he was laughing his ass off, and he said no, he said it'll be perfectly fine because I never took a measurement before or after. The other thing is my biggest thing is I wanted to have it here that when it lifted up here, I use this thing the ball right here.
We uh over the last little while before I decided to uh make adjustments on an already machine that really didn't need any that the ball had to come up high enough to move the trailers around the yard cuz we've been using it for moving trailers in and out of the shop and everywhere.
So, I got the best out of both worlds. So, again, according to Brian Honing, I got enough penetration on there with probably 6 to 8 in.
Yeah, we did.
car out of my yard.
Wait, Monday? Monday. One day, yeah.
Who owns that car anyways? Yeah, who owns that car anyways?
Anyways, everybody stacks their in my yard. He's a good kid, though.
Um So, I'm happy about that.
Uh the only thing I got left to do here is I got to plumb my winch in right here.
I'll come across and I'll come over here onto this fitting here and onto this fitting here, I think, and keep it keep it somewhere over here on top of the spool or get it back here a little bit further out of the way. Um I was trying to use some scrap hoses up.
This is a Parker hose. Dear Princess Auto, where I've getting all my hoses and stuff crimped at, assured me that they can't crimp onto this hose cuz they only have a set of dies or whatever for their kind of hose.
So, my cost savings of about $30 went up in smoke.
Um again, guys, here's some genuine quarter or 5/16 hose all the way from lovely downtown China.
I was trying to save the ends on it.
Again, they're all different. This hose is nothing but a memory.
It's all kind of specific that some it works together and some doesn't. The crimps are different, the fittings are different, and yes, I do know whatever crimp it is, there's a guideline for it for how much it crimps, how much it doesn't crimp.
Again, if you blow a hose and you have something weird on it, it's a pain in the ass to go find the other end that was on it because nothing matches. So, if you get something that is generic that the local distributor uses, use that kind of fittings and stuff on your stuff cuz when you do have a problem, you can get a fitting. If not, there you are. You got to change everything over in order to get it fit.
So, again, use what you have as your availability in your neighborhood. Try not to use too much weird on stuff, even though if it does fit. Anyways, I'm babbling on. But Anyways There you have her, guys. We're coming along. This thing's getting really, really close. Really close to being finished.
I got the inner cooler, after cooler, outer cooler, over cooler. Whatever kind of cooler you want to call it.
Right here. I got all the rest of the pieces and parts here all all picked up for where it's got to go. It's going to go here.
That goes over the top. Right like that.
This one here will go right to here.
I got it swedged down.
Two elbows here to make it fit. It comes from here to the intake comes back over here over to the air cleaner. This here comes over here. I got it the fittings here. It comes off of here. You're going to come over here with an elbow and I'll plug it into with this one here.
And we'll bolt it to the side and call it a day. Again, my biggest problem is setting this coupler up. Right here. To get that square so it doesn't knock it out or wear or wear or wear wear.
So, uh again I do have a friend Kenny that's a millwright. I was almost thinking about calling him to come over and give me a hand. But, I'll try working through it myself. Where's all the rest of the batteries at?
Where's all the big batteries at? I pulled four new batteries out and there's no batteries to be found, please.
Oh, what do you mean what do I need? Oh, there's a big sleeping bag there.
What's in there?
The air compressor. It has a battery.
Well, go get it.
I will.
Yeah, I didn't keep this, too. Oh, give it to Well, why do you keep Where's all the big batteries at?
The A. The A.
Anyways it greases to ask you for this. You know what I'm going to ask you, don't you? I don't know what you're having a bad sick for 2 days.
>> I know what it's time to get your ass up and breathe a little bit of smoke. It's good for you. With cigarettes, you You need to stop smoking, man. I have it.
What's that? I have it. Anyways, all bull aside, Yeah. So, what do you need for me?
It grieves me to ask you. I need you to do some welding for me.
Like metal welding? Yeah, not no plastic. Oh, yeah.
Why I Why? Because you're a better welder than I am, okay? And the helmet, we got a new helmet coming from Miller, one of them Clearviews.
Cuz they sent me one cuz I was whining about how bad it my vision getting really bad. And they said, "Here, take a Clearview for people with bad vision or whatever. It's a little bit easier to see with." So, We're not going to be from these guys. Well, they got good helmets. They got good This Clearview They're the top of the line helmets. This Clearview helmet that they got, I tell you what, it's a kick-ass helmet. I used it in Las Vegas. You probably still welded.
Well, it makes me feel good inside, okay? Whether I'm a welder or not. But anyways, make sure you set that thing up so whatever. Don't whatever.
Just a little bit thinner beads.
It's set up really good actually because You don't tell a guy to weld.
Well, that was pretty bad, backer. I'm surprised you did that good actually cuz that was all welding backer. That was all That was hard to weld cuz I was in there with my tacks. You know what? Did you learn anything from that? Find my tack down before you start welding on it.
That way you won't get it. We go back over there and clean them up.
This metal with wire, it's really, really important that it's clean cuz otherwise it welds like The other new Miller welder that I have that's been up and it's disposed of for 100 years, it welds rust like This here 300 P, for some reason the computer is a little bit different.
It's It's [music] way pickier than that new stuff. So, but any That bull [ __ ] about that, I need you to weld up. The last bracket right here. Welded here, get it there, get it there, and maybe on the inside if you can, give it a stitch and a stitch. You know, it does not need to be welded 100% out, Mr. Welder Welder.
Weld the hell out of stuff. Those All of the brackets that you put 4 lbs of weld on. You only need an inch stitch on certain things.
But this here, whatever.
Weld it a little bit, about this much, and then weld it from the backside, so it doesn't pull a whole lot, okay?
And then inside up here. Yeah, give it a stitch. Give it a stitch. Give it a stitch. Flip it over and weld it in the inside and then finish it off on both sides. I'll clean this up.
Speaking of all things, we just might have a grinder out.
It's in my truck.
This truck here?
Go get it along with the rest of my batteries you have. I have one battery in the shop.
Like you're so full of You should enjoy these moments.
Yeah, but there's still need in the process of joining these moments you should be torturing me.
Well, you know what?
You're not even going to tell me.
You'll be locked up for you want? A flapper wheel? Or do you want What do you want? A flapper wheel or an abrasive wheel?
>> Where did you find the zip ties at? None of your This is where I found them. I ain't I'm not telling you where the zip ties are.
You can babies.
You know there's a reason why I keep my Yeah, you look disgusting, what is that I see? Yeah, it's good.
Use them all.
Okay.
I didn't know I didn't know that's what you had.
Actually not.
Those won't take nothing from nothing.
They won't cut nothing. Yeah, they do work. I use them all.
Wash one? Yeah. You're more than welcome to all of them. Just put them right in here. Here.
You don't need to get them all wet.
Get that water set up.
I get lunch out of this?
Two minutes.
Here, do you want a free zip cut?
Here, here's here.
Here's four.
You were almost out of gas, see?
What I mean?
You were almost out of gas, man.
I can't believe it.
No.
I think you can have all these things while I work here.
While you're What's that?
Working out where? Dairy Queen?
Do work Do work past Do work hard and go over here. Yeah. Yeah.
Really? Yeah. You look sick. Yeah.
I just Yeah.
This is really Yeah. You're just you're strong like bull, yeah.
Hey, you feel the difference, Dylan?
Holy Look at that. Hey, look at that. That was a leaky cord there.
>> [laughter] >> Okay.
Hey, on the serious note, hey, on the serious note, get out of batteries.
Hey, what the what What was that? No, no, no, no, no, no.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dude, when you when you're dead, do you want me to still use the batteries up? Dylan, last time I checked, DID I PROBABLY GOT A FEW MORE YEARS TO LIVE?
Like probably at least, you know, there's a couple more years to live to use these batteries. I know, but Dad, when you're going on trips for 2 3 weeks at a time when I'm working somewhere, instead of bringing instead of bringing your generator, I just bring an extra battery. I just bring a Um, clean that thing up before you weld on it.
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I guess you have that, yeah.
>> [music] >> I know the comments on that will be, "You didn't clean it enough." Well, you know what?
Who cares?
Hey.
What's up?
Go go go everyone. Get get take a pee.
Is the heat turned up?
Oh. the hole was so long.
Oh, flower. Okay.
There. This is canned.
Give me a break.
No, there's not. Turn it off.
That's actually quite a good weld. Yeah.
Okay, give her Remember Remember, what is the most important thing about when you're welding? Yeah, make it look good.
>> No.
Yeah, you can typically Oh, you got all the training to be a welder. You whine, you snivel, and you complain.
Remember, heat it pulls. Weld a little bit, flip it over, weld the other side, okay? Keep it cool.
Okay? Should I just weld it all the way around? Just tack and stitch it. Tack and Yeah, tack and whatever. Put it on whatever part.
What? Do only about an inch and then roll it over and do another inch.
>> It's not a boat. That's Like it actually.
Got it?
Superstar.
John. Perfect.
Hold it for like a minute. Yeah.
Huh? Oh, there we go.
The ball is frozen. Hit it again.
Oh.
Hit it again. The ball was frozen. Just hit it again.
Give it Perfect. Give it a Cuz the ball is frozen, ain't it? The ball is stuck in there. Or it's stuck now.
Let's use your eyes.
We just ran out of gas.
You can turn up the heat the wire, right?
What was it doing?
What's it doing?
It's actually not that bad.
This one here is the >> Oh.
This one here is a Oh.
Which one's on this one? Yeah.
I think it's going to dab. Okay. There you go.
Yeah, but it You got it. That's it. You want to see how it That's it.
>> [music] >> That's a nice weld.
>> We're done today, buddy. Hey. Hey.
Take a look at that.
Getting down to it. Almost professional.
Deep pressure right there, Abraham.
>> Yeah.
Whatever.
Oh.
It's the lever.
That's actually a leg. Impressive, huh?
Just what?
That's actually quite impressive, actually. Look at that is.
Yeah, if you want to. I don't know you're going to get a big old gob out of it, probably.
Yeah, give it a try. This is fast.
It's actually coming out quite nice.
You know, I'll make you a I'll make you a deal.
You getting You getting paid?
>> [laughter] >> Yeah. Somebody is getting paid.
You go take and you get a little bit better and you take a few welding lessons off somebody that knows how to weld like somebody that's a good welder, get some lessons off of them, and I'll start paying you to weld.
Okay? I don't have an issue with that.
You weld good enough that you weld good enough that I I'd I'd actually start paying you to weld my stuff.
And I do mean that. That's not for television.
>> Let's just start with one strip though.
Okay, but you get to be a better welder.
I'd even I'd even taken whatever.
Like [music] about $8 an hour should be fine, eh?
Yeah, we Let's just stop with the I was thinking of all your good qualities.
>> I'd pay you. I really truly would pay you good at your welding. Yeah, but you would pay me that? Well, I got to pay somebody else to weld.
Yeah. So, it's I'd rather >> What do you have? Yeah, okay. I'd rather pay you to weld. You're getting not bad.
Okay? But there's a little bit The problem being is is you you're There's more to it than just putting a bead down. You got to learn about material, learn about metal a little bit, learn about a few things. It's too bad you weren't closer to go see Larry and have him design it.
>> pull over here to do that? Yeah. Hello.
Yeah. I I Now, >> [music] >> you got a full bead on that.
It's a good idea on the back side in the middle, give it two tacks about this big. And you should try to weld the corners out a little bit around the corners. This is going to break it for you.
It does and it doesn't. Depends how you leave off on your weld. It causes stress and crack. There's a whole lot to it.
What? You didn't seem to know a lot about it while you were welding this up.
>> Because I'm a welder. I know about it.
But again, it's very very important It's very important how you leave off the ends of your weld. Like that's why I stared at it.
Again, there's more to it than I You ever notice when you see welding on a beam or something that comes like this and it's got two fish tails coming off of it?
There's a reason for that cuz it takes and transfers the crack and the undercut away from what you're welding on. So, when you take a look at something and go, "Well, why did that guy weld and have little welds on there?" Or the way certain stuff is stitched, there's a reason for it. Here and in the corner, that's good.
The backside. It does not need it, but do it anyway.
Are you happy with that? I am.
Yeah, I love it. Yeah, you did.
You did Please, finish these corners off.
Get these corners [music] off.
At least from the tops. Stitch, stitch, stitch, stitch.
Buddy, you're you're being broke.
I don't give a [ __ ] if you're broken or not. I'd rather pay you than somebody else.
And hey, you know what?
You got You got to >> 75 Oh, 50 bucks an hour. It sounds like something that I would have done.
Isn't that Hey, and I get to use your welder?
It It It I don't think he wants to use my one.
Evan, Miller Welding, could you send him his OWN WELDER, PLEASE?
>> [laughter] >> THANK YOU.
YEAH, I KNOW. BUT ANYWAYS, there's a pile to it, and I'm not going to get into it. I'm not cutting your hands before you start. Whatever. That's for somebody else to show you.
This Look at that.
Guys, I thought you weren't sending him all the typical welding weapons off the net.
Hey.
Give me corners.
>> You break the corner right here the tear apart.
Just whatever.
Dad, watch this downhill. It's going to rub you the wrong way. What's that?
Watch this downhill.
Put your glasses on.
Downhill is easy. There's no penetration in it.
Look at that.
This is going to hold me, boy. I see how they rub you the wrong way. It looks like You are You got all the making I am. This is metal. This is metal.
Brazil at 85 No. Why is it doing that? Look at that.
Why is it doing that?
That's cuz he's got You see it's It's a turn off. You make a fun of me.
It's got too much scale on it to weld.
Yeah. You can take him It It come out good now though.
Well, you are a true welder, aren't you?
That's what they say.
It It It's >> That's what they say.
Here. I think I got >> I think I got Get the Where's that? Get that out.
Turn this thing off.
I I checked this one while I was Watch your Watch yourself.
>> [music] >> Evan, where the [ __ ] are my welding gloves at?
>> [music] >> What?
You see that, guys? [music] Only a professional can drive with a zip cut.
We go over this after you kids leave. Do you know why I like a zip cut?
It's my friend.
Now, remember something.
When you heat metal up, it stretches.
Right?
Hold up.
Hold up.
Look more even.
Look even? Yeah.
Okay.
Just talking.
Good. [ __ ] it here.
Tack at the end.
Okay.
Give me a stitch under here the same length as this. A stitch underneath here the same length as this. Weld the end.
Put a stitch on the top. Stitch on the top.
Don't worry about welding the corners out whole. Just stitch it to just just just just a little bit.
Good enough. Same on the other side.
Good enough.
Yeah, get a little Get a little on the top right here.
Right close to it. Very close.
Weld the other one over.
No, no, no, no. Don't just Yeah, whatever. Weld it just right there on the end.
Whatever. You know.
Do the other one. Good enough.
Okay.
We need to brace this piece up.
Weld it good. Good enough.
Watch the end there. Watch the end there.
Yeah.
Good enough.
You never know.
Hold it.
Weld it up.
It's [ __ ] hot.
Yep.
No.
Okay, that's done. That's done. That's done.
What happens when you weld close to aluminum, you know?
Does it melt it?
Good idea. Here, take and put a little bead right in there and right in there.
Okay?
Keep it from moving. Yeah. Yeah, yes.
Stake it on each side. There you go.
I'm curious what it's going to do.
Let's see.
Cool. Yeah, the other side.
Okay.
Give it a little bit more on that [music] one.
And you know with all the things I've done for you in my life, you wouldn't pay me for welding.
Well, why wouldn't I?
Here. Here. Here. Weld it.
Chalk it up to you broke.
Is it already welded up?
Did you weld it up? I'm getting to it.
No, we did not.
See, you shouldn't have ground it.
You Like I did. You did that. I never not in a million years would I grind that. You did that.
>> You know how I can follow the pattern? I made it, you broke it.
Can you see the crack in it? Yeah, I can see the crack in it. You grounded that.
Just weld [ __ ] half of this.
Everything you would do is not things I would do either that I have done. You've wrecked my [ __ ] They're actually good though.
Oh.
The crack will open it up.
Here you go.
See that right there?
Hit that one more time.
Wire.
Good now. Take a look at it.
I did.
Take a look.
Yeah.
That's not very good.
Neither does my mom, Chad. There you go.
You posted Chad.
Posted Chad for Bruce Control. You told Douglas cuz he was a stir about shaking his two pounds. Is that right? Yeah. I was going to leave it alone.
Okay.
Um Come here.
Nervous? Come here. Nervous? [music] Yeah. It's okay. It doesn't really feel good.
