Tilka Manjhi, a Santhal teenager who led an armed revolt against the East India Company in 1771, was 86 years before the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny; he assassinated Collector Augustus Cleveland with a poisoned arrow, held out in the forests for years using guerrilla tactics, and was ultimately captured, dragged through Bhagalpur, and hanged at age 35 in 1785, yet remains largely forgotten in Indian history despite being the first freedom fighter.

86 years before anyone else dared to rise. The Santal people had nothing. The company took everything. Their forests, their land, their gods, all stolen. So Tilka became Jabra, the fearless one who refused. He used guerilla tactics the company could not counter. 1784 he shot collector Augustus Cleveland with one arrow. Cleveland died. The company sent an entire army after one man. For years he held. The forest was his fortress.
They finally caught him betrayed, not beaten in battle. They tied him to a horse and dragged him through Bogur. He was 35 years old. They hanged him in 1785.
