Ice jams form when accumulated ice blocks river flow, causing water levels to rise dramatically and potentially flooding nearby communities; this occurs when snowmelt and ice cannot find a path downstream due to blockages, as demonstrated by the 3 miles of packed ice and 60 miles of chunk ice causing high water levels on the Yukon River near Russian Mission, Alaska.

Storm train running through week’s end in Southern regions of AlaskaHinzugefügt:
Hey, welcome [music] back. Here's a look at your weather headlines on this Wednesday, the first in a series of storms to bring wet and windy conditions is making its way out of South Central, but we do have more on the way. That means I am still tracking more wind and rain specifically for South Central and Southeast. And then we still are under flood watches. Ice jams are causing high water on the Yukon River and that is where we have multiple flood warnings in place tonight. Uh this is going to continue likely into tomorrow. Grayling, Holy Cross, Russian Mission are areas that already have high water beginning to inundate their communities, some airport runways uh are covered as well.
And here's what's going on. We have 3 mi of packed ice. It is at near Russian Mission with another 60 mi of chunk ice uh in behind that. And right now it doesn't have anywhere to go because there is an ice jam here uh just about 10 mi down from Russian Mission. So all that water, all the snowmelt uh from the past week is trying to filter in and it just has nowhere to go. So that is why we are seeing high water. Please still use extra caution in this area and pay close attention to those water levels.
As I've been saying for the past couple of weeks, uh those conditions can change very rapidly. So it's really important that you're paying close attention to that. Otherwise, we are seeing improving conditions on the Kuskokwim. That is now all the way open. We are tracking winds through the Alaska Range passes and into Southeast tonight. Uh that will start to improve as this front pushes onto the north, but again this is one of two storms moving through. This area of low pressure and this front that you can see draped all the way into Southeast will keep that rain going in those coastal areas here tonight, but uh it's pretty much already passed over Anchorage, just a little bit to go uh to be over the valley as well. So that means improving conditions behind that storm tonight. It doesn't last for long though, because we do have have next one pushing in here from the west. Here we are overnight tonight as we head into tomorrow morning. You already start to see those showers showing up from the valley through Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula. 10:30 tomorrow morning seeing those chances for showers and seeing the wind increasing again as we head into the second half of the day. Those showers will be in and out. It won't be anything too heavy, not as wet as what we saw today, but those showers will extend into the interior throughout much of the western side of the state and into Southeast as well. Those showers just kind of linger around Friday and into Saturday, but as we move closer to that weekend, look what happens. Not a lot of green on the map, no major organized systems moving into the holiday weekend. I so I do expect drier conditions especially by Sunday and continuing into Monday morning. Now in Southeast, we do still have those high winds today near Yakutat and into Haines, but those are going to start to improve into early tomorrow morning.
Showers lingering most of the day up north. I just seeing those morning showers to the south and high temperatures will be back into the low to mid 50s. That is for Southeast. Into the interior, still seeing those strong winds in Delta Junction with gusts to near 45 miles per hour. Showers are likely in for Yukon, but just a chance for a few showers in Fairbanks. High temperatures for you still back into those low to mid 60s. Get up to the slope, temperatures are slowly warming.
We're back up to that freezing mark in Prudhoe Bay tomorrow. Seeing some breezy winds out of the east and mostly cloudy skies for you.
And then on the west side, uh it's sunny in Kotzebue. Well, we'll see light rain in Bethel. We'll see mostly cloudy conditions there in McGrath. Through the Aleutians, holding on to those chances for showers and those strong winds gust between 30 and 40 miles per hour for most of you. Scattered showers in Kodiak and across the Kenai Peninsula tomorrow.
High temperatures will be up for 40s and low 50s. For Prince William Sound, holding on to the rain tomorrow. I do expect drier although windy conditions in the Copper River Basin for the valley as some breezy winds tomorrow we'll see those scattered showers and highs in the low 50s and Anchorage do be prepared for those winds to increase again tomorrow in town to about 35 miles per hour and a bit heavier as you head to the hillside but once we get into Friday just a slight chance for shower or two we'll get rid of that moisture on Saturday and then Sunday night into Monday for the second half of Memorial Day weekend looking pretty nice with those high temperatures back into the low to mid 50s and Fairbanks we'll see those high temperatures holding in the low to mid 60s chances for showers for you on Sunday and then again Wednesday of next week all in all not too bad.
>> Yeah, a nice long holiday weekend and some sunshine at the end.
