[00:00:00]Welcome to five from 55. This week, it's my picks for the best five of 75 that aren't Jaws, cuz [music] you've seen Jaws, haven't you? At number five, it's Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor. Nixon's little Watergate scandal wouldn't last half a news cycle today, but in the '70s it spun a bunch of great paranoid political thrillers. This may be the best. At number four, it's Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. A, it's not near as boring as it looks. And B, Kubrick's insistence on natural light and attention to detail are honestly [music] about 10 times more impressive today than they were on release, when most movies looked at least not crappy.

[00:00:29]At number three, I got Woody Allen's Love and Death. Yeah, yeah, I know, [music] but there's always going to be the inconvenient truth that he made some very funny movies once, and I would argue gag for gag, this is the funniest he ever made. At number two, it's Italian filmmaker Lina Wertmüller's Seven Beauties, starring Giancarlo Giannini as a petty criminal and ladies' man who attempts to seduce his way out of a Nazi concentration camp in World War [music] II. And at number one, maybe a good watch ahead of the America 250, it's Robert Altman's Nashville. For my money, one of the greatest American movies ever made.
