Scientists continuously monitor near-Earth asteroids using global telescopes to detect potentially hazardous objects that could impact Earth, as these dark, fast-moving rocks pose risks ranging from city destruction to regional devastation, and unlike other natural disasters, asteroid impacts can potentially be prevented if detected early enough.

5 Giant Asteroids Could Hit Earth Before 2100!Añadido:
What if I told you that somewhere in the darkness of space there are giant rocks silently moving through the solar system and a few of them have a tiny chance of crossing paths with Earth before the end of this century. Not tomorrow, not next week, >> [music] >> but within the lifetime of people already alive today.
And here's the terrifying part. We may not get a second chance >> [music] >> because unlike earthquakes, hurricanes, or volcanoes, an asteroid impact is one of the few natural disasters humanity might actually be able to stop, but only if we see it coming.
Welcome to Infinite Science. Today, we're diving into the real science behind dangerous asteroids, the objects being watched by astronomers, and why planetary defense is no longer science fiction.
>> [music] >> Because the question is not just could an asteroid hit Earth? The real question is, >> [music] >> would we be ready? Every night, while most of us sleep, telescopes around the world scan the sky. They are not looking for aliens. They are not looking for stars.
They are searching for objects that could one day become a threat to Earth.
These objects are called near-Earth asteroids. Most of them are harmless.
Many are small. Some burn up in the atmosphere before ever reaching the ground.
But others are different.
>> [music] >> Some are hundreds of meters wide. Some are larger than skyscrapers. [music] And a few are big enough that if they hit Earth, they could destroy a city, >> [music] >> devastate a region, or change life on the planet. The scary thing is that space is enormous and asteroids are dark, fast, and difficult to track.
>> [music] >> They don't glow like stars. They don't announce their arrival. They simply move, and sometimes they come close.
Now, before we go any further, [music] let's be clear. Scientists are not saying a giant asteroid is definitely going to hit Earth this century.
The chances are usually very small. But, in planetary defense, even a tiny probability matters when the consequences are enormous.
>> [music] >> Imagine someone told you there was a 1 in 10,000 chance that a city could be destroyed. [music] Would you ignore it? Probably not. That is how scientists think about asteroid risk. They calculate the orbit. They measure the speed. They predict future paths.
Then, they ask [music] one crucial question. Could this object and Earth arrive at the same place at the same time? Most of the time, the answer is no.
>> [music] >> But, sometimes the answer is we need to keep watching. And that is where the story becomes fascinating. [music] There are several asteroids that have appeared on scientific risk lists over time.
Their names are not always easy to remember.
