In 1872, Ludwig Boltzmann derived the arrow of time from statistical mechanics, showing that entropy increases because there are vastly more disordered states than ordered ones. However, this derivation requires an assumption about initial conditions so improbable (1 in 10^10^123) that it cannot be explained by physics itself. Boltzmann proposed that our universe might be a rare fluctuation in a dead, high-entropy cosmos, but this leads to the Boltzmann Brain paradox: such fluctuations would produce more 'fake' observers with false memories than real ones, threatening the very possibility of scientific knowledge.
