Doddington Hall - A Tudor Mansion with Georgian Style

[00:00:00]Hello. Today we're at Doddington Hall.

[00:00:02]Yes, Doddington Hall is a beautiful home just outside Lincoln.

[00:00:13]Doddington Hall was built at the end of the 16th century [music] during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and is a fine example of and is a fine example of a brick Tudor mansion.

[00:00:31]Built by Robert Smythson, one of England's foremost Elizabethan architects, who was also responsible for Longleat and Hardwick Hall.

[00:00:44]The hall has been owned continuously by descendants [music] of the same family for over 400 years.

[00:00:54]And though the rooms are grand, this is very much a family home with the interior rooms decorated in a light and elegant Georgian style.

[00:01:11]The ground floor features a great hall, parlor, and a library.

[00:01:18]On the first floor is the Holly bedroom with a four-poster bed over 300 years old, the drawing room, and [music] a grand Georgian chamber, and also the tiger bedroom.

[00:01:41]Doddington Hall has some wonderful tapestries dating from the 1600s that have recently been restored and depict scenes from country life and the Trojan Wars.

[00:01:56]One interesting aspect is to look where the tapestries have been cut or altered to either fit the walls or to patch damaged areas of the overall tapestries.

[00:02:27]The upper floor features a long gallery, which was used by Elizabethans on rainy days as a place to exercise.

[00:02:35]And in Georgian times, it was used as a bowling alley.

[00:02:41]On this floor is our favorite room in the house, the tent [music] room, where the ceiling and walls are hung with an Egyptian tent.

[00:03:24]Outside, the gardens near the hall retain their Elizabethan roots with geometric hedges and a small walled garden.

[00:03:35]Beyond is a larger herbaceous garden and a kitchen garden.

[00:03:44]In the grounds, there is also a farm shop >> [music] >> as well as other shops and a restaurant.

[00:03:53]And if you wish, there are a number of nature trails to explore even further.
