In 1859, a single pig eating potatoes nearly triggered a war between the United States and the British Empire over San Juan Island. When American farmer Lyman Cutler shot a Hudson's Bay Company boar, the British demanded $100 compensation, but Cutler offered only $10. This dispute escalated into a 12-year standoff involving 66 American soldiers, five Royal Navy warships, and over 2,000 British troops. The crisis was resolved in 1872 when Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany arbitrated the dispute, awarding the islands to the United States, with the pig remaining the only casualty.
