In criminal trials, ex parte communications between judges and one party without the presence of opposing counsel are generally prohibited under judicial rules of professional conduct, and attorneys may invoke attorney-client privilege to protect confidential communications, even when ordered by the court to disclose information, as demonstrated when Brian Steel, Young Thug's defense lawyer, was held in contempt for refusing to reveal how he learned about a secret meeting between the judge, prosecutor, and witness Kenneth Copeland.

Brian Steel, Young Thug's lawyer, is an absolute savage. I don't know if you're watching this, but Young Thug, the musician, whose name is Jeffrey Williams, has been on trial for criminal charges, criminal RICO charges in Atlanta, Georgia, since November.
They're on their like 88th day of trial.
And Brian Steele is Jeffrey Williams, Young Thug's criminal defense lawyer.
Now, get a load of this, okay? Just just follow me here. So, there's this witness named Kenneth Copeland who the state was planning to call as a witness to testify against Young Thug. Um, he signed some sort of cooperation deal with the with the prosecution at some point. However, um, over the weekend on Friday, he tried to invoke his fifth amendment right against self-inccrimination to not testify. He was then held in jail over the weekend and allegedly basically forced to testify. And this all culminated with Monday morning. This is all this week. Uh alle allegedly there was a meeting between the judge that's presiding over this trial, the prosecutor and this witness, Mr. Copelan. No defense lawyer present. No, no lawyer for the defendants in this meeting that occurred where allegedly the witness was coerced or threatened into into testifying against his own will, basically being told he could be held in custody indefinitely or for for the rest of the trial or or something like that.
So, Brian Steel, young Thug's lawyer, apparently catches wind of this meeting.
And by the way, uh, judicial rule of professional conduct 2.9 generally prohibits exparte communications, which is the judge communicating with with, um, with anybody outside of the presence of both sides. So, in this case, the prosecutor and the defendants. But, um, Brian Steel caught wind of this and allegedly brought it to the court's attention, at which point the court ordered Mr. Steel to te to tell the court how he had learned that information. Steel refused to do so, citing u various concerns including the attorney client privilege. And he was then held in contempt of court and taken into custody um and ordered to spend 10 weekends in jail. Here's the kicker, and this is what makes Brian Steel probably the most savage lawyer I've ever heard of. He steel requests after being sentenced. He requests that he be allowed to serve his time with his client in the same jail as his client so they can work on the case together.
