After the 1707 Treaty of Union, Scots feared London would melt down Scotland's crown, so they locked it in an oak chest in Edinburgh Castle's Crown Room, sealing the room and forgetting its location for 111 years until Sir Walter Scott opened it in 1818, discovering the crown intact and now on display in the same room.
