The Psychology of Stupid People Who Think They're Smart (Maybe That's You)
Added:Let's get started. Number 10, the confidence of the clueless. Picture the guy at a party explaining the stock market to an actual financial analyst.
He watched two YouTube videos and read half a Reddit thread, and now he's gesturing with a beer like he's giving a TED talk. Meanwhile, the analyst is just nodding quietly, dying inside. This is the famous Dunning Krueger effect, and it's probably the most misqued idea in all of psychology. The original 1999 research by David Dunning and Justin Krueger found something simple but brutal. People who scored the worst on tests of logic, grammar, and humor also rated their own abilities the highest.
Not slightly high, wildly high. People in the bottom 12% estimated they were better than roughly 2/3 of everyone else. Here's the actual mechanism because it's smarter than the meme version. To know you're bad at something, you need the exact same skills required to be good at it. If you can't recognize a bad argument, you also can't recognize that your own arguments are bad. The incompetence and the blindness are the same thing. Dunning called it a double curse, which is the most polite possible way of saying you don't know and you don't know that you don't know. Now, honesty time researchers still debate how big this effect really is. Some argue part of it is just a statistical artifact people in general rate themselves as slightly above average and math does the rest.
But the core finding that the least skilled overestimate the most has held up across a lot of studies. And here's the twist nobody likes. This isn't a personality type. It's a condition everyone visits. You are right now in the beginner zone of something while feeling like an intermediate. You just can't tell which thing. That's the whole point. Number nine, everyone is a better driver. Ask a room full of drivers to rate themselves and something magical happens. About 80 to 90% will say they're above average, which is mathematically impossible. And yet, emotionally, everyone in that room means it. Even people surveyed after being hospitalized for car accidents, actual crash victims, have rated themselves as skilled drivers. This is illusory superiority, sometimes called the better than average effect, and it is one of the most reliably replicated findings in social psychology. Most people think they're more honest than average, funnier than average, less biased than average, and better at judging character than average. We are a species of seven plus billion people, most of whom believe they're in the top half. The mechanism is sneaky. For vague fuzzy traits like being a good person or good driver, your brain gets to pick the definition. If you drive fast, good driving means skill and reflexes. If you drive slow, good driving means caution and safety. Everyone grades their own exam and everyone writes the answer key first. Interestingly, for hard measurable skills like juggling or speaking Mandarin, the effect shrinks or even reverses. Reality only humbles us when it's allowed in the room. There's also a memory problem. You remember the time you avoided an accident because of your quick reflexes. You do not remember the four times other drivers avoided you. Your near misses get filed under proof I'm good. Their near misses with you get filed under, "Wow, people can't drive." The uncomfortable part. Studies suggest that believing you're less biased than others is itself one of the most common biases. It even has a name, the bias blind spot. So, if you just thought sure, but I'm pretty self-aware, congratulations.
That was the effect performing live.
Number eight, Google made you a genius.
Here's a fun experiment you've already run on yourself. Someone asks you how something works, say a zipper or a toilet, or how the government actually passes a bill. You start confidently.
Oh, it's easy. So basically, and then around sentence two, you hear your own voice slowing down and you realize you have absolutely no idea how a zipper works. You've used one every day of your life. You cannot explain it.
Psychologists call this the illusion of explanatory depth, and it's a real well-documented finding. In studies, people rated their understanding of everyday objects, zippers, toilets, ballpoint, pens as high. Then researchers asked them to actually explain step by step how the thing works. Ratings collapsed. People genuinely believed they understood right up until the moment they had to produce the understanding. Why does this happen?
Because your brain confuses familiarity with knowledge. You've seen a zipper work thousands of times, so it feels understood. But feeling isn't knowing.
And the internet has made this dramatically worse. Research has found that simply having access to search engines makes people rate their own personal knowledge higher, even for questions they never looked up. Your brain treats Google like an external hard drive and then quietly takes credit for everything on it. This is where things get genuinely concerning because it doesn't stop at zippers. Studies applying this to political policies found that people hold extreme confident opinions about complex issues and when asked to explain mechanically how those policies would actually work, their confidence drops and their positions soften. The explanation test is basically kryptonite for fake expertise.
So, here's a cruel little party trick.
Next time someone is loudly certain about something, don't argue. Just say, "Interesting. Walk me through how that works." Then watch the confidence drain out of them in real time. Fair warning though, this trick works on you, too.
Number seven, smart people fool themselves better. Here's the plot twist. Nobody wants being intelligent doesn't protect you from believing dumb things. In some cases, it makes it worse. There's a line of research by Dan Kahan and colleagues on what's called motivated reasoning. In one clever study, people were given a math problem about whether a skin cream worked. The people best at math solved it most accurately. Then researchers swapped the skin cream for a politically charged topic. Same numbers, same structure.
Suddenly, the most numerate people were among the most likely to get it wrong, but only when the correct answer clashed with their political team. Their math skills didn't find the truth. Their math skills built a better lawyer. That's the mechanism. Intelligence is a tool, and your brain doesn't automatically point that tool at reality. It points it at winning. A sharp mind generates sharper rationalizations, more sophisticated excuses, more convincing reasons why the evidence against you doesn't count. A mediocre thinker believes something wrong and shrugs. A brilliant thinker believes something wrong and produces a 40-minute defense with citations.
You've seen this in the wild. The friend who is genuinely clever and uses every ounce of that cleverness to explain why their obviously doomed relationship is actually fine. the engineer who can debug anything except his own opinions.
So when someone says, "I'm too smart to be fooled." Understand what you're hearing. That's not armor. That's the vulnerability announcing itself. The easiest person for a smart brain to fool sits about 0 in away from it at all times. Number six, pretending to know fake things. Researchers have a delightfully evil trick called overclaiming. They hand people a list of concepts and ask which of these are you familiar with? Mixed into the real terms are complete fabrications, invented ones like subjunctive scaling or fictional historical events that never happened.
And reliably, a chunk of people confidently claim familiarity with things that do not exist. Even better studies found that the people most likely to claim knowledge of fake concepts were the ones who rated themselves as knowledgeable in that field overall. Self-declared finance experts claim to know fake financial terms. The bigger the self-image, the bigger the bluff, and the bluffer often isn't lying on purpose. They genuinely feel like they've heard of it. Their sense of expertise fills in the blanks automatically, like autocomplete for the ego. This is why sounds familiar is such a treacherous feeling. Your brain uses fluency how smoothly something processes as a shortcut for truth and familiarity.
If a phrase sounds like the kind of thing an expert in your field would know, your brain quietly stamps it known and moves on. No factchecking department is ever consulted. You've watched this happen in meetings. Someone drops a term and three people nod with the serene confidence of monks and at least one of them is nodding at pure static. You've probably been one of the three. I certainly have. The fix is annoyingly simple and socially expensive. The phrase, "I don't know that one." Cost you 3 seconds of looking slightly less impressive. Saves you from a lifetime of nodding at things that were never real.
Number five, earning the right to stop listening. Here's a strange pattern.
Sometimes the most closed-minded person in the room is the one with the most credentials. Not despite the credentials, because of them.
Psychologist Victor Otati and colleagues studied something they called earned dogmatism. The idea social norms say experts are entitled to be more dogmatic. So when people are made to feel like experts, even artificially just by giving them an easy quiz and telling them they crushed it, they become measurably less open-minded afterward. Feeling smart literally grants people an internal license to stop considering other views. You didn't get wiser. You got a hall pass from your own ego. This pairs with a wellocumented problem-solving trap called the Einsteelling effect where experience with one type of solution actively blinds you to better ones. In classic experiments, people trained on a complicated method kept using it even when a laughably simple shortcut was sitting right there. Their expertise wasn't just unhelpful, it was blocking the view. Real life runs this experiment constantly. The senior developer who dismisses the intern's idea in 4 seconds, the idea that turns out to be right. The doctor who's seen this exact case a thousand times except this one is different. The parent whose entire argument is, I've been doing this longer than you've been alive, which is technically a sentence, but not technically evidence. Experience is supposed to buy accuracy. Sometimes it just buys certainty and those are very different products. The most dangerous phrase in any skilled person's vocabulary is trust me I know this said quickly without checking because checking is for beginners which is exactly how experts make beginner mistakes with expert confidence. Number four, debate me coward. There's a specific type of person who confuses arguing with thinking. You know him. He says things like, "I'm just playing devil's advocate." The devil apparently being short staffed and treats every conversation as a courtroom where he's the star lawyer, the judge, and somehow also the victim. Psychology has a useful lens here. The distinction researchers draw between confirmation-driven reasoning and what's sometimes called actively open-minded thinking, a concept studied by Jonathan Baron. Genuinely good thinkers hunt for reasons they might be wrong. Argumentative people hunt for reasons you are wrong which feels identical from the inside and is completely different in outcome. One process updates beliefs. The other just defends them louder. There's even a serious theory Mercier and Spurber's argumentative theory of reasoning proposing that human reasoning didn't evolve to find truth at all. It evolved to win arguments and justify ourselves to others. That's why people are brilliant at spotting flaws in your logic and mysteriously blind to the same flaws in their own. The skill was never find the truth. The skill was win the tribe. Watch what happens when the debate guy is proven wrong. Does he update? No. He shifts the goalposts, redefineses the words, or declares he was just testing you because the argument was never about the topic. It was about him. Winning an argument and being right are two separate achievements, and the people who collect the first one obsessively, tend to be strangely low on the second. Number three, the humble ones keep winning.
Here's an irony that should be illegal.
The people most likely to say, "I might be wrong about this," are statistically the ones least likely to be wrong.
Researchers studying intellectual humility, people like Mark Liry and teams at Duke, have found that folks who score high on it, are better at evaluating evidence more accurate at distinguishing strong arguments from weak ones, and more willing to read information that contradicts them.
Meanwhile, the perpetually certain crowd skims a headline, feels a feeling, and calls it research. The mechanism makes sense once you see it. If your identity is person who is right, every piece of contrary evidence is a personal attack and your brain will spend its energy repelling it. If your identity is person who wants to be right eventually, contrary evidence is free upgrade material. Same information, completely different immune response. This also shows up in forecasting research. Philip Tetlock's work on prediction found that the best forecasters weren't the boldest or most credentialed. They were the ones who constantly hedged updated and treated their own beliefs as drafts. The confident TV pundits, the ones paid specifically for their certainty. Their predictions often performed around chance level. Certainty, it turns out, is a fantastic television product and a terrible thinking strategy. So, we've built a world that rewards the exact opposite of accuracy. The loudest voice gets the platform. The hedging voice gets ignored. And the phrase, "I'm not sure." Arguably the most intellectually honest sentence in the English language reads as weakness. It isn't. It's the sound of a brain that's still switched on. Number two, my team is never wrong.
Try this experiment. mention a political opinion at a family dinner and watch a perfectly reasonable adult transform in real time into a press secretary for a government that doesn't exist. This is identity protective cognition and it's one of the most humbling findings in modern psychology. When a belief gets welded to your identity, your politics, your religion, your favorite parenting philosophy, your phone brand honestly your brain stops treating challenges to that belief as information. It treats them as threats. Neuroscience work by Jonas Kaplan and colleagues found that when people's political beliefs were challenged, brain regions associated with personal identity and threat response lit up. Your brain processes your opinion is wrong suspiciously similarly to sh you are in danger. Which explains the weirdest part. Facts often don't fix this and sometimes arguing makes people dig in harder. The famous backfire effect turned out to be less universal than early studies suggested.
Corrections do work more often than the internet claims. But the milder version is rock solid. People scrutinize unwelcome evidence like forensic accountants and wavefriendly evidence through like airport security waving through a pilot. Here's the kicker for our topic. Everyone believes this section is about the other side. Every single person. The left thinks it's about the right. The right thinks it's about the left. And the I'm independent I think for myself. Crowd thinks it's about both, which is itself a team with jerseys. The belief that your group reasons and their group rationalizes is the pattern. If your side has never once been embarrassingly wrong in your eyes, that's not because you picked the perfect team. It's because you stopped grading them. Number one, reading this and thinking of others. And here we are at number one, which has been quietly happening to you for this entire video.
Be honest. As you listened, faces appeared. Your coworker at number 10, your uncle at number two. That guy from the group chat honestly for most of them. Every single entry your brain helpfully assigned to someone else. And it did it instantly automatically without you asking. That's the bias blind spot documented by Emily Cronin and colleagues, and it's the perfect boss battle for this list. In studies, people readily agreed that biases like these are real and common. They accurately spotted them in the average person. Then asked about themselves, they reported being noticeably less biased than average. And here's the beautiful part. Knowing about the bias, blind spot didn't shrink it. People learned about it and then exhibited it in the same breath. Why? Because when you judge other people, you look at their behavior. When you judge yourself, you look at your intentions and your inner reasoning. And your inner reasoning always feels clean from the inside. Bias doesn't feel like bias. It feels like thinking. Nobody experiences their own motivated reasoning as motivated. It just feels like being right, which is exactly what it would feel like either way. So, no, the title of this video wasn't clickbait. Maybe that's you was the thesis. Not because you're stupid, but because the feeling of being smart and the fact of being smart are two different signals, and every brain on Earth occasionally confuses them. The people in genuine trouble aren't the ones who sometimes feel dumb. They're the ones who never do. The good news, you made it to the end of a video that mildly insulted you 11 times, and you're still here. That's openness. That's the whole trick. The smartest thing a person can carry around isn't an answer. It's a small permanent well-fed doubt. That's it for today.
