Genie Young's going to show you a quick, simple, but yet delicious recipe for how to make a good gyro. A gyro that tastes good. Here's what you're going to need.
All of this comes in a kit minus the shredded lettuce and your fresh tomato.
I'm using aroma tomato. They just seem like they're in season right now. So now in the kit, it's just a box comes in your freezer section of your local market. You get that lovely lamb meat.
And it's exactly like the meat that they put in your gyro where you go purchase it at your local restaurant. They're going to give you some pita bread that is amazing.
There are sometimes they give you four of them. If you don't want to use this, grab you some naan bread cuz we know naan bread is absolutely amazing as long as you heat it up for about 10 seconds before you make up your sandwich. And they give you that gorgeous sauce. It's kind of like a cucumber sauce like everybody loves it, right? In my pan I got a tiny bit of oil and I'll be using some garlic powder right now. So you can put the fresh onion in, you can put some feta cheese on here like have fun with your recipe. Just have fun cuz this is so good. Super easy to make.
Talk about the gyro meat. It's going to come in a package like this filled with this lovely lamb meat that tastes so good, but it will be frozen. This is how I thaw mine's out. I keep it in the package. I set it in just a bowl of cold water within like a half an hour it's nice and thawed out, okay? So now in my pan here there's just a tiny bit of oil.
One thing you don't want to do is overcook it. You overcook it and it'll turn into like a bacon consistency, right? So we just really want to heat it up.
The comment section, let me hear from everybody. Do you love a good gyro like we do here at the Young's house? We must have these like once a month because they are so good. They hardly cost anything and my family loves them. I love a good gyro. And but when I'm going out to the local restaurant to get it, I'll always tell them don't put the sauce on cuz I don't want them to put too much on. And if they put the sauce on the side, then I can put as much as I want, you know? And then I always ask for add tomatoes cuz I think tomatoes is lovely in a gyro. I really do. Now there's a chicken gyro that you could make. I just don't know where you could find that thinly sliced chicken that's going to look like this. We're going to cut some fresh onion because I just believe fresh onions should be on your The question of the day is, do you call your gyro a gyro like I do? Do you call it a gyro, a hero? People call it all kinds of stuff. So pronounce it to me when you spell it out in the comment section. Tell me how you say yours, but where I grew up at we we say gyro.
Cut some nice beautiful onion. I guess you have the option to saute up your onion, but I do feel like when you're having a gyro, make it a nice sweet vidalia onion. Cut it into thin slices and it's going to taste absolutely amazing. Listen to me. You're going to have to trust me on this one. If you don't like that cucumber sauce that they give you, use you some mayonnaise. It tastes amazing on a gyro. Let's take a peek in at this lamb meat. It smells so good. Look at that. Garlic powder going on. You want to put you some onion powder on there? You can, but just don't salt it. It does not need to be salted.
So keep in mind this is not garlic salt.
It's just garlic powder. You decide how you want to cut your tomato. Just get it nice and cut up. It's going to bring a really fresh taste to your gyro.
Let's go ahead and put our fresh tomato right onto this plate with those gorgeous onions. Our meat really is just about done. But let's talk about the pita bread. And I want to reiterate if you don't want to use pita bread, get you a packet of the naan bread. It's amazing. So whether it's pita bread or naan bread that you're using, always heat it up for about just I don't know, 12 to 20 seconds just to make it nice and pliable. And believe it or not it tastes better when you heat it up. If you just go to make your your gyro using this, it has a raw taste.
Heat it up just a little bit make it taste better. Everybody that always likes to ask what am I drinking for today? I just got some coffee and guess what? This is black coffee. It's just straight black. I don't have nothing else in it and it tastes good. And now let me show you what this gyro meat looks like. It's absolutely gorgeous. I made sure I didn't overcook it, but what I did do, excuse me, I took a paper towel just a dry paper towel and I kind of dabbed up that oil. You don't want that extra oil in here, okay? You don't want to have to I went ahead and heated this up and look how much pliable it is. Oh yeah. And it smells like yeast. It smells so good. So my son, this gyro right here is for our son. He just informed me that he wants some cheese on his. So guess what we're going to do. We're going to put the cheese on. And we're not going to be afraid with the cheese. We're going all in, right? Now see me and my husband we would do just a tiny bit of feta crumbles on here and that really gives you that Greek feel. If you wanted to put some Italian seasoning on here, you could do that, too. Okay, so let's just kind of let that cheese melt a little bit. Really is just that simple. How much fun is this? If your family loves a good dry gyro, start making them at home. Start making them at home. It's so much fun. Are you kidding me?
Oh yeah. Here's the thing, when you start making things at home, you can make it like you like. Put as much meat as you want. If you ask for a little bit of tomatoes, you can do that. Not all the time does a restaurant really do what you want them to do, you know? You ask for a lot of lettuce, they give you a tiny bit, right? So now he wants fresh onion. I'm going to put that fresh onion onto that hot meat. Oh yeah, and it'll really make that sweet onion taste gorgeous. Is that enough onion? Yeah, it's enough. Okay, great. So now he wants a nice amount of lettuce. Oh yeah.
I'm making gyros.
Now watch this. Tomatoes galore. Are you kidding me? It's so much fun to make a good delicious gyro. And they also give you the little packets.
