If I Had $50K in Debt in 2026, Here’s Exactly What I’d Do

[00:00:12]The math is rigged against you from the start.

[00:00:15]After over 20 years of working through people's finances, on my Netflix show, my book, my podcast, I have watched people eliminate large debts like this over and over.

[00:00:25]And there are six proven steps you can take to eliminate your debt fast.

[00:00:29]And the most important one actually has nothing to do with cutting costs.

[00:00:33]Let's jump in, starting with step one, slow down your debt.

[00:00:37]Let's rethink your debt problem.

[00:00:39]You actually have an interest rate problem.

[00:00:42]And until you fix that, nothing else you do is gonna matter.

[00:00:45]Remember, at 27% interest from your credit card, your 50K in debt is costing you over $1,000 a month in interest alone.

[00:00:52]That money disappears before a single dollar touches your balance.

[00:00:56]So the house is on fire and right now we need to stop pouring gas on it.

[00:01:00]There is a better move that can change the game entirely.

[00:01:05]We're gonna try to lower your interest rate because at a lower interest rate, every single dollar you pay works harder.

[00:01:12]Call your credit card company and ask for a lower APR.

[00:01:15]That five minute call could save you thousands of dollars over the lifetime of your loan.

[00:01:20]You can say something like, I've been a customer for seven years.

[00:01:23]I'd like to request a lower interest rate on my account.

[00:01:25]That's it, simple and direct.

[00:01:27]And while you have them on the phone, ask if they offer any hardship programs.

[00:01:31]If you are genuinely stretched thin, some lenders will work with you on a more manageable payment structure.

[00:01:37]You always wanna ask, is this gonna affect my total amount owed?

[00:01:41]And of course, if you qualify, you can look into a 0% introductory APR balance transfer.

[00:01:47]But in general, a lot of people treat that as a gimmick instead of focusing on paying off their debt systematically.

[00:01:54]The point is if you have high interest debt, focus on the interest rate first.

[00:01:59]And if it works, you have just skipped ahead.

[00:02:03]Now that we've slowed the bleeding, the next step you cannot skip, no matter how scary it might be, is step two.

[00:02:08]Face your actual numbers.

[00:02:10]You know, I've coached thousands of people on their money.

[00:02:13]And those who carry the most debt always have one thing in common.

[00:02:16]They don't know their numbers.

[00:02:18]They don't know how much they owe.

[00:02:19]They don't know their interest rate.

[00:02:21]They definitely do not know the month and year they're gonna be debt free.

[00:02:24]That's because they'd rather not look at their interest rates or minimum payments.

[00:02:27]So when a statement arrives, they just toss it aside.

[00:02:29]They'll deal with it later.

[00:02:30]It feels bad.

[00:02:31]Avoiding your numbers can give you a moment of relief.

[00:02:34]And when you're in debt, that can feel like the only thing in your control.

[00:02:37]But it means that you are navigating your finances in a fog.

[00:02:41]If you don't know your numbers, you cannot get out of debt effectively.

[00:02:45]That fog is gonna keep you stuck thinking about your debt in the abstract.

[00:02:49]And that is what credit card companies want because time is on their side.

[00:02:52]The longer you're in debt, the more you pay in fees.

[00:02:54]The moment you actually write down your numbers and you see them all in one place, something clicks.

[00:03:00]That is scary for people because it means you're gonna have to take ownership.

[00:03:04]But look at my face.

[00:03:06]Look at how I look.

[00:03:07]Do you think I care about you being scared?

[00:03:09]No, I'm here to help you live a rich life.

[00:03:12]That takes walking through the fire and confronting your fears.

[00:03:15]And that's exactly what we're gonna do because I want you to make decisions based on math, not just your feelings.

[00:03:20]This is what you do.

[00:03:21]List off every debt you have.

[00:03:23]Credit cards, student loans, car loans, personal loans, mortgage, all of it.

[00:03:28]Now, next to each one, write down the total balance, how much you owe, the interest rate, and the minimum monthly payment.

[00:03:34]Then I want you to write down your total monthly take home pay.

[00:03:38]Four things, that's your map.

[00:03:40]Once you have that map, you're gonna see something for the very first time.

[00:03:43]Which of your debts is actually costing you the most?

[00:03:45]That is vital.

[00:03:46]Everything we've done so far has been getting clarity on the numbers.

[00:03:49]The next step is where you actually start crushing your debt.

[00:03:52]Do you see how this approach is different than yours?

[00:03:55]Most people do not take the time to get all their information in one place.

[00:03:59]They just start randomly paying off debt.

[00:04:00]That's why it's been so hard.

[00:04:02]But we are taking a different approach.

[00:05:39]Treating all of your debt the same is a very expensive mistake.

[00:05:43]$50,000 in credit card debt at 27%, for example, is a completely different problem than $50,000 in student loans at 4%.

[00:05:53]A credit card at 27% is costing you over $1,000 every single month in interest.

[00:05:59]Your student loan at 4% only costs you $167.

[00:06:02]Same balance, but the interest rate is the difference and that difference costs you over $10,000 a year.

[00:06:08]So yes, you need to address all of your debt, but I don't want you to just randomly throw money at random debts.

[00:06:16]You've gotta be strategic and the order you attack your debts determines how fast you get debt free.

[00:06:23]From now on, we're gonna pay off debt based on something I call math.

[00:06:27]Have you ever done it since 12th grade?

[00:06:30]We're about to do it right now.

[00:06:31]People go, "Remit, Satie, I'm so scared.

[00:06:32]I don't wanna do it.

[00:06:33]Oh, it's fine. I'll just have my AI do it."

[00:06:35]You can have your AI do it.

[00:06:36]I really don't care what kind of calculator you use, but you need to use numbers when you have tens of thousands of dollars in debt.

[00:06:43]Look at that list of debts that you created in our last step.

[00:06:46]Find the debt with the highest interest rate.

[00:06:48]That's gonna be your target.

[00:06:49]Every extra dollar you have goes towards that debt while you pay only the minimums on everything else.

[00:06:57]Let me say that again, because it's really important.

[00:06:58]People are going, "What extra money, Remit?

[00:07:00]I'm pretty strapped for cash right now."

[00:07:02]You've got to look at how many debts you have and how much you are paying towards each debt.

[00:07:07]I guarantee you are not currently paying the minimum on all your other debts and putting the extra money towards your high interest debt.

[00:07:16]You're not doing that, because if you were, you would have that strategic plan.

[00:07:19]That is what we are doing right now.

[00:07:21]Once that first debt is gone, you take everything you were paying towards it and you roll it into the debt with the next highest rate.

[00:07:28]Your payments are gonna stack.

[00:07:29]They're gonna accelerate.

[00:07:30]You're gonna keep going until it's all gone.

[00:07:32]This is called the avalanche method, and it saves you the most money on your debt over time.

[00:07:36]Now, there is another approach called the snowball method where you start with the smallest balance and you work your way up.

[00:07:42]And I find that to be very motivating, but you can choose which method works for you.

[00:07:47]If your goal is to save the most in interest, avalanche is the most effective.

[00:07:51]Now, if you followed these first three steps, you've already made moves that are gonna save you probably thousands of dollars.

[00:07:56]Your system is set up.

[00:07:57]Your money is now moving with plans.

[00:08:01]What comes next is where you could lose everything you just built, because getting out of debt is one thing.

[00:08:06]Staying out of debt is a completely different skill.

[00:08:09]So keep watching if you want to maintain the progress that you've made so far.

[00:08:14]Step four, stop suffering for no reason.

[00:08:17]You don't need to suffer.

[00:08:18]And also, you can't suffer your way out of debt.

[00:08:20]You've tried it.

[00:08:21]You know what I'm talking about.

[00:08:22]You decided, this is the month I finally get serious about debt.

[00:08:25]I'm gonna go on a no-spend November.

[00:08:28]Did it work?

[00:08:29]No, because you were approaching it through the lens of restriction and suffering.

[00:08:34]I'm not going out to any dinner with my friends.

[00:08:37]That stuff doesn't last.

[00:08:38]It's based on willpower.

[00:08:40]You're not changing your actual habits that got you here in the first place.

[00:08:43]There is a limit to how much you can cut.

[00:08:45]And at a certain point, you're gonna cut so deeply that you're simply gonna stop following your plan.

[00:08:50]But there is no limit on what you can earn.

[00:08:53]So if you want to make a lasting dent in this debt, if you actually want to pay it off years faster, you've got to go on offense.

[00:09:01]So instead of targeting $3 decisions, here are some $30,000 decisions for you to consider.

[00:09:06]Start with housing.

[00:09:07]It's possible to negotiate your rent.

[00:09:09]In fact, rents are down across many cities in America, including Santa Monica, Austin, lots of different places.

[00:09:17]Most people have never even thought of negotiating their rent and they certainly never tried it.

[00:09:21]But one rent negotiation can free up hundreds of dollars a month, which can be used to redirect to your debt payments.

[00:09:27]Same with transportation.

[00:09:28]When I talk to a lot of couples, they often have two, sometimes three cars.

[00:09:33]And I'm talking about couples in severe debt.

[00:09:35]I'm just looking at them like, "Marcus, what do you do for a living that requires this work truck?"

[00:09:41]I have an accountant.

[00:09:42]What are you towing?

[00:09:42]Like calculators?

[00:09:43]One guy once told me, "I need my weekender."

[00:09:46]I go, "What the (beep) is a weekender?"

[00:09:49]You think my Indian immigrant parents even know what that word means, "weekender?"

[00:09:53]No, you do not need that.

[00:09:55]And sometimes when you have severe amounts of credit card debt, you may need to figure out a way to do it with one car.

[00:10:01]It's going to be uncomfortable.

[00:10:03]This is the energy I need you to embrace, which is not supposed to be easy.

[00:10:07]I got myself in this situation.

[00:10:09]It's going to be a little hard to get back out, but I want to attack it with a lot of aggression.

[00:10:14]Finally, reframe that conversation from saving to earning.

[00:10:17]You can cut and scrape together maybe $3,000 a year in savings.

[00:10:20]And if you're in credit card debt, you should.

[00:10:22]In addition, you may be able to negotiate thousands of dollars in a raise at work.

[00:10:28]And that will allow you to put that money right towards your debt.

[00:10:36]Earning more lets you attack your debt from another angle.

[00:10:40]So I want you to make one of these decisions today because that's how you move the needle in a big meaningful way.

[00:12:26]You just made a big win decision.

[00:12:29]But if you aren't careful, it's gonna be easy to go right back to the way things were.

[00:12:33]Think about it.

[00:12:33]Every month you're making the same choices over again.

[00:12:37]How much goes to debt?

[00:12:38]How much should I save?

[00:12:38]Did I remember to pay that bill on Friday?

[00:12:40]We don't want to build a plan that's based on your willpower.

[00:12:44]What if you get sick?

[00:12:46]What if you're traveling?

[00:12:47]What if something gets stressful one week and the whole thing breaks down?

[00:12:50]The fix here is not for you to become some hero.

[00:12:54]The fix is to take willpower out of the equation entirely.

[00:12:58]Automate your payments so that you make the decision once and then it runs forever.

[00:13:02]This is what I do with my money.

[00:13:03]I am not waking up in the morning and deciding, should I spend this much or should I invest this much or save?

[00:13:08]It was decided years ago and it flows every single month.

[00:13:13]And every December, I take a look at it and I can tweak it or change it based on what I want.

[00:13:18]So here's the general principle for the system.

[00:13:21]Before your paycheck arrives, you are going to set up your debt payoff payment that automatically goes to your high interest debt.

[00:13:31]That payment is gonna happen before you even see the money in your checking account.

[00:13:36]Now I have another video that gets into details, but the major point is you wanna set that automatic system up once and then let the plan run itself.

[00:14:07]Now you can do everything we just talked about, the big wins, the system, the automation, and get yourself completely out of debt.

[00:14:12]But six months later, you might be surprised to find yourself right back in it.

[00:14:15]That happens a lot.

[00:14:16]And when it does, it's worse than the first time because you know exactly how hard you had to work to get out of debt in the first place.

[00:14:23]The moment your balance hits zero is an amazing opportunity for you to look and say, "I am never going back."

[00:14:30]Every extra dollar you had was going towards your debt.

[00:14:33]Now it's very tempting to see the debt at zero and go back to spending the way you used to.

[00:14:38]And for some of us, it's not a spending slip.

[00:14:39]Maybe it's an emergency that you don't have money saved for.

[00:14:43]So before you become debt-free, you need to make a few rules for yourself.

[00:14:48]First, I want you to plan to redirect everything that was going towards that debt straight to your emergency fund.

[00:14:55]That's right.

[00:14:56]Take the money that you were paying towards your debt, whether it was $200 a month, $2,000 a month, put it towards an emergency fund.

[00:15:03]I don't mind if you want to take a tiny bit and go have a celebratory dinner.

[00:15:07]Great, but we are not getting back into the old ways of spending.

[00:15:12]Your target is to build six to 12 months of essential living expenses.

[00:15:16]Think about what that means.

[00:15:17]Even if you lose your job, it's not gonna be a crisis.

[00:15:20]You're gonna have a long time to figure out your next move without a panic.

[00:15:23]Once that is fully funded, you can redirect most of the money towards your investments.

[00:15:28]You can increase your 401(k) contributions.

[00:15:30]You can max out your Roth IRA.

[00:15:32]You can open up a taxable brokerage account.

[00:15:33]You're gonna let your money start compounding, growing for you.

[00:15:37]And this is how real wealth is built.

[00:15:39]You are not simply letting money flow through your fingers.

[00:15:42]You are making a plan and thinking one year, five years, 10 years in advance, and you'll have more money than you ever thought possible.

[00:15:50]Now, yes, you can take some of that money and slightly increase your living expenses.

[00:15:56]Instead of just one celebratory dinner, you may wanna say, "Hey, we're gonna go out twice a month."

[00:16:01]Fine, you even might say, "We're gonna get dessert when we go out."

[00:16:04]Great, but it's gonna be part of your plan and you know the numbers behind it.

[00:16:08]More importantly, most of the money that has been going to interest and debt for so long is going to be focused on growth, saving, investing.

[00:16:17]That's gonna be amazing.

[00:16:19]And you can decide what you want your money to do from here.

[00:16:22]You have spent months, maybe years in restriction mode.
