In legal proceedings, individuals seeking name changes must demonstrate that the change serves a legitimate purpose and meets legal requirements, even when based on religious or personal reasons; courts carefully examine criminal history and assess whether the name change would benefit the public, as demonstrated when a judge questioned a man with a felony record about his request to change his name from Corey Norwood to Corey Caleb based on religious transformation.

FELON Fraudster Says GOD Wants His NAME CHANGED (again)… Judge Gets VERY Suspicious!!追加:
The law is intended for righteous people.
>> Okay. So, are you here asking for a name change?
>> Do you say that Jesus is Lord?
>> So, I do the question asking in the courtroom in your case now. There you are.
>> Okay. Yes. Uh Caleb is, you know, the last name that I'm trying to change to. Um I'm I'm just trying to, you know, greet the court. Um >> Okay. I need you to stop. I I mean you asked for a record.
>> All right.
>> I'm going to call the case. We're here on FM26-00001383 um Enray Corey Barber Norwood. And um let me swear you in, sir.
Do you swear or affirm that the testimony you will give in this cause will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?
>> Yes. So help me God. Okay, go ahead and introduce yourself to the court.
>> Um, my name is Prophet Corey Caleb. I'm a prophet of of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. And I just want to say grace unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
>> Okay. So, are you here asking for a name change?
Yeah, I'm here to get a name change.
>> Okay. I need to know what your name is and what you're asking the court to change it to and why.
>> Okay. Um so, um the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord. This is this day is the scripture fulfilled in the in the hearing. Um, and that's why I'm changing my name. He told me um that my name was changed. He was giving me a new name and I'm being obedient.
Okay. I do not um So, I need you to tell me what your current legal name is.
>> Um, currently the name was uh the name was Corey Barbara Norwood.
>> Okay.
All right.
And you're asking me to change it to what?
>> Corey B Caleb.
>> And um is that C A L E B?
>> Yes.
>> Okay.
And so B is just an initial. That's not a name.
Yes.
Yes. You could you can make it I can have it as B. Can I?
>> I don't think so. Um I can look into that but that a letter is not a name.
>> Barbara is fine.
>> Cory Barber Caleb. Okay. All right.
All right. Thank you. Um, so I need to understand do you have any um criminal history and tell tell me what there is.
Well, um, in the past there was, um, gosh, you know, let's say like Oh, you said criminal. Uh, I'm guessing it's um maybe forgery. This was maybe 20, 30, 30 years ago. Um and then uh maybe um a fraud maybe about 10 years ago. I think that's the only two things.
>> Okay. And >> all was always was honorably taken care of.
>> And where was the fraud charge?
>> And it was in Illinois.
And it um it resulted in a felony conviction, >> I believe. So, >> and that was the 2015 charge?
>> No.
Did you say yes? Fraud? Yes, that was a 2015 charge. Yes. I'm sorry.
>> And what about the the forgery?
>> That was like 20 maybe like 20 I mean not even 2019 96.
>> Okay. And did that charge result in a conviction?
>> Uh, yes.
>> And was the conviction for a felony?
>> I believe so. Yes.
>> Okay. And when you were convicted of the forjury charged, did you um serve time for that?
>> No.
>> Probation?
>> Yes.
>> Okay. How long was the probation?
>> Oh, wow. Um maybe maybe maybe 3 years probation.
>> Okay. So you'd have been on probation from 96 to 99.
>> Yeah, I guess you could say that maybe 97 to 2000 to maybe when the case was done it was, you know, it started in 97.
I'm thinking but >> Okay. And then the felony conviction in Illinois uh for fraud. Um when would that that conviction was 2015?
>> Yes.
>> And what was the sentence associated with that?
>> Um 36-month sentence.
>> Okay. I heard 36 months. I didn't catch the last part.
>> It was a 36. It was a 36-month sentence in um >> sentence.
>> Yes, it was a 36-month sentence.
>> Okay. And was that in the penitentiary?
>> Uh no, it was in a I don't even know what penitentiary. I I doubt if it was a penitentiary. I think >> prison jail.
>> Yes. Yes, it was in it was in a prison.
>> Okay.
All right.
And when so you would have been released in 2017.
>> Uh I was released in 2016.
>> Okay.
And since 2016, have you had any more any other arrests for any reason?
Uh there was arrest but no convictions.
>> Okay.
Okay. So um just looking at the requirements for the law in Texas in order for someone to get a name change when there is a past history that in includes this type of criminal conduct. So, um, why don't you explain to the court why this name change would be in your best interest?
Because when a man be in Christ, he is a new creature.
Old things have passed away. Behold, the new has come. I'm a new man. I'm changed.
And um what the the old name is no longer associated with who I am. And this new name in Christ is who I am.
Um I come in my that's my father's name.
That's the name that my father named me.
My father in heaven. And um I received that name.
as a new man, as a minister of God.
>> Okay. What about um your given name, Norwood?
>> What about it?
>> I guess I I need to understand why you were seeking to drop that.
>> Because I was renamed. I had an encounter with Christ Jesus. He and I sat together and he gave me a new name.
>> Okay. And then my next question um Mr. Norwood is how would granting this name change be in benefit to the public?
The public would benefit because the law is intended for righteous people.
And my name change would showcase someone new. Someone is that is not of the old man of the of a old center. Um, my life is a new and the old man is dead. The old me is gone. So, changing this name would benefit the public and they would be able to see a name that represents a new man.
>> Okay.
Anything else you want me to understand about the request for the name change?
Um, Just looking at my notes I wrote.
>> No, I just I would I would like to ask you um do you say that Jesus is Lord?
So, I do the question asking in the courtroom, Mr. >> Okay.
>> I'm not on the witness stand. I'm in the judge's chair.
>> Okay.
>> So, I I appreciate it, but this is a a court of law. And so, it it's um that's what I'm here to do. I understand um your name change is based on a request for religious reasons.
And I don't have any other questions for you. I am going to study it because I want to make sure that um the legal requirements for meeting this request.
Um I'm going to take a look at those before I make up my mind. So I'll take it under adisement. When I make up when I make a decision, you'll hear from my staff and we'll get an order entered.
Okay.
>> What is that time? What does that time frame look like?
>> Probably by the end of the week. a day or so, I would think. I just need to take a look at the statute based on what you've said here today.
>> God bless you.
>> All right. Thank you. Um, you are free to go.
Have a good rest of your week. You're excused from the virtual courtroom.
>> You do the same.
>> All right.
If you're involved in a dispute with another party such as this and you just can't seem to work it out, don't resort to taking the law into your own hands.
You take him to court.
>> All right. Thank you very much. Officer B's waiting for you and that will bring this case to a conclusion.
