The Vijayanagara Empire, founded in 1336 by brothers Harihara and Bukka in response to Delhi Sultanate invasions, became one of the most powerful and culturally sophisticated civilizations in South Indian history, reaching its peak under Emperor Krishna Devaraya (1509-1529) with a population of 300,000-500,000 people and remarkable achievements in architecture, literature, and trade. However, the empire's political system was fundamentally dependent on the personal capability of its rulers, and after Krishna Devaraya's death in 1529, internal factionalism and the strategic miscalculation of his successor Ramaraya led to the catastrophic Battle of Talikota in 1565, where a coalition of five Deccan Sultanates defeated the empire, systematically destroying its capital city of Hampi and reducing it to archaeological ruins.
