The largest known galaxies in the universe can be up to 1.8 million light-years across, such as ESO 383-76, which is approximately 18 times wider than our Milky Way galaxy; however, measuring galaxy sizes is challenging because galaxies lack clear borders and gradually fade into space, making their true boundaries difficult to define.

The Largest Galaxies in the Universe本站添加:
What is the largest galaxy [music] in the universe?
Most people think the Milky Way is enormous, and it is. Our galaxy stretches [music] more than 100,000 light years across.
But compared to some galaxies, [music] it's surprisingly small.
And here's where things become strange.
Galaxies [music] don't have clear borders. Unlike planets, they slowly fade into the darkness, making it difficult to determine [music] where a galaxy actually ends.
That's why measuring the size of a galaxy is much harder than most people realize.
But scientists have found galaxies that completely dwarf our own.
One of them is called Malin 1.
At first, [music] it looked like a normal spiral galaxy. Then astronomers discovered something incredible. Its outer spiral arms extend [music] nearly 650,000 light years across. That's about six [music] times wider than the Milky Way.
Another giant is Rubin's Galaxy, also known [music] as UGC 2885.
This monster galaxy spans [music] almost 450,000 light years and contains far more stars than our own galaxy. Sometimes galaxies appear enormous because of collisions.
Gravity pulls stars into gigantic streams that can stretch hundreds of thousands of light years.
But the true giants [music] may actually be elliptical galaxies.
These galaxies grow [music] by absorbing other galaxies over and over again.
One example, [music] called ESO 383-76, may stretch nearly 1.8 million [music] light years across.
Think about that. You could line up 18 Milky Ways across [music] its width. And here's the craziest part. Scientists don't know if this is the limit. There may be even larger galaxies hidden in the darkness.
New observatories are expected to reveal objects we've never seen before.
Possibly galaxies so large and faint that they've remained invisible until [music] now.
And the real question is how many giant galaxies are still [music] hiding in the universe waiting to be discovered?
