And under that lid, buried beneath two, sometimes three miles of frozen weight, there is a landscape no [music] human eye has ever seen. And here is the sentence that should keep you here. We have mapped more of the [music] surface of Mars than we have mapped the land hidden beneath the Antarctic ice. Think about that. A planet 400 million km away. A red world we've only ever visited with robots is better understood than the ground [music] under our own boots at the southern pole of Earth. There are mountain ranges [music] down there, canyons deeper than any you've stood at the edge of, lakes of liquid water sealed off from the sky for longer than our species has existed. And almost none of it has ever [music] been touched.
Tonight, we're going down, not into a [music] story someone invented, into the real thing. Because what's actually beneath that ice is stranger, older, and colder than any fiction anyone has ever tried to sell you about this place.
Start at the surface where you'd stand if you were dropped there. The interior of Antarctica is not the postcard. It is a plane of ice so [music] flat and so featureless that pilots have described a kind of vertigo, a horizon that doesn't behave, a whiteness with no edges to catch the eye. The air is the driest on the planet. Parts of the continent are technically a desert, receiving less moisture than the Sahara. And the cold, the cold here is not a temperature you've felt. It is a temperature that has been recorded near - 89° C. Low enough to freeze breath into crystals before it leaves the space in front of your face. You would not survive an unprotected hour. In some conditions, you would not survive minutes. This is one [music] of the deadliest, emptiest surfaces a human being can stand on. And it is only the beginning. [music] It is the roof. Now imagine the ice itself has weight. Real weight. An unimaginable mass pressing down. The Antarctic ice sheet holds around 90% of all the fresh water on Earth. Frozen into a single continental slab that in places is more than 4 km thick. That much ice presses the bedrock beneath it down into the mantle. actually deforming the shape of the crust. Peel that ice away in your mind, lift the lid, and you would not find a smooth basin. You would find a drowned [music] continent, a hidden geography of ridges and troughs and trenches carved before the freeze. And one of those trenches near what we call the Denman glacier plunges to a point more than 3 1/2 km below sea level. That is the deepest point [music] of land anywhere on the planet. Deeper than the Dead Sea, deeper than any [music] canyon exposed to open air, a gash in the Earth's crust so profound [music] it would swallow the Grand Canyon and keep going. And no one has ever seen it. No expedition [music] has descended into it. No camera has looked down its walls.
We know it exists only because instruments [music] passing overhead detected the shape of the ground far below the ice. It is mapped in the loosest [music] sense of the word. It has never been witnessed. Sit with that for a second because it tells you something about this whole continent.
Everything you're about to hear is like that trench. Real, measured, charted by radar and gravity and the ghostly echoes of sound bounced off buried rock and almost entirely unseen. We are exploring Antarctica the way a blind person explores a room. Running [music] our fingertips along the outline of things in the dark. Building a picture we can [music] describe but have never actually looked at. The frontier we all imagine is up. Space, the stars, distant planets. But the truest, least explored frontier on this planet is down. It is directly beneath us. And it does not want us there. That's not a physical claim. It's a physical one. Everything about this place is arranged [music] by pure indifferent geography to keep you out. The cold that kills. The catabatic winds, rivers of dense freezing air that pour down off the high interior and accelerate as they fall, hitting speeds that can flip aircraft and fle exposed skin, howling for days without pause.
The crushing plasticity of the ice, which flows and shifts and closes over anything drilled into it. creasses hidden under [music] thin bridges of snow waiting. The sheer distance, the interior of Antarctica is farther from rescue than almost anywhere a human can be. This is a place that took decades of technology and human ambition just to survive on the surface of. And the surface, remember, is only the lid. The world we actually want to reach is a [music] mile, 2 miles, 3 miles straight down through solid ice. And the ice fights you the whole way. It is not hostile because it hates you. It is hostile [music] because it is old and heavy and utterly unconcerned with whether you make it through.
So, [music] let's go through it slowly, layer by layer, because the descent itself is one of the strangest journeys on Earth, and each level down is stranger than the one above it. Start at the top where you're standing on that endless plane and take your first step downward into the ice. The first thing you pass through is time. The ice beneath your feet is not a solid [music] frozen block of the present moment. It is a stack of years laid down one snowfall at a time, pressed [music] and compacted and preserved. Drill a core straight down and you can read those years like the rings of a tree. [music] near the surface you find last winter and the winter before that. Go deeper [music] and you're passing through the Middle Ages. Deeper still, the last time humans painted on cave walls and in the oldest, deepest ice [music] we've reached, you cross 800,000 years of Earth's history. [music] An unbroken record locked in the frozen layers. And here is the detail that stops the scientists who study it. Trapped inside that ancient ice are tiny bubbles of AI, real air, actual atmosphere, sealed the moment the snow closed over it. Which means that when a researcher pulls up a core from the deepest layers and cracks one of those bubbles open in a lab, they are breathing air that was last free 800,000 [music] years ago. a sample of the sky from a world with no cities, no farms, no fire lit by any human hand.
The ice remembers what the atmosphere was made of before we existed. It has kept it undisturbed [music] in the dark, waiting, and you have not even reached the bottom of the ice yet.
[music] You are still at this depth, only partway down. Because below the frozen record, below the trapped ancient sky, the ground itself begins. And the ground is where it gets stranger. Keep going down past the deepest ice we've ever pulled a core from. And eventually the frozen record ends. [music] Not with the floor of rock the way you'd expect. Not with anything solid [music] at all in some places. But for now, follow the ice all [music] the way to where it presses against the bedrock and stop there at the boundary [music] between the world we know and the world no one has ever seen. Because this [music] is the moment the picture in your head has to change completely.
That flat white plane you started on, it is a lie about what's underneath. Peel the ice away. Drain it all off in [music] your imagination.
And what you'd be standing on is not a smooth featureless slab. It is a [music] continent.
A full complicated dramatic continent with everything a [music] continent has.
Mountain ranges, valleys, river channels cut long ago. Basins that would fill with sea if the ice were gone. There is a landscape down there as varied and violent as anything on the surface of the Earth you already know. And almost none of it has ever been seen by a human eye. Not photographed, not stood upon, not touched.
Think about what that actually means for a second. We have rovers crawling across Mars, sending back pictures of hills and craters 40 million miles away. We have mapped to the far side of the moon [music] in detail. We have detailed charts of the surface of Venus drawn by radar that punch through [music] its clouds. And yet, the land hidden beneath the Antarctic ice, a land mass on our own planet nearly 1 and a half times the size of the United States, is mapped in less detail than [music] any of them. We know the shape of another world better than we know the shape of our own basement. That is not an exaggeration for effect. That is simply where we are.
The best pictures we have of the buried continent were not taken by cameras.
[music] They were built up painstakingly by aircraft flying [music] grid patterns for years, firing radar down through the ice and listening for the echo bouncing back off the rock far below. Line by line, [music] pass by pass. a sketch drawn in sound of a place light will never reach. And when they drew [music] that sketch, they found things that should not be there. Deep in East Antarctica, buried under miles of ice, the radar traced out the [music] peaks of an entire mountain range, not small hills. arrange the size [music] of the European alpiece, jagged, sharp, with peaks and valleys and the unmistakable profile of tall young mountains. They call them [music] the Gambortev mountains. And here is what makes them a genuine puzzle. One scientists still argue about mountains that sharp are usually young. Erosion wears peaks down over time. Wind, water, ice, all grind them into rounded stumps [music] eventually. But these mountains are hundreds of millions of years old, ancient beyond ancient, and they should have been worn flat an eon ago. Instead, they stand there, [music] sharpedged and dramatic, perfectly preserved. And the only reason we can think of that they survived is the very thing hiding them.
The ice sheet growing over them may have frozen fast to their sides [music] and shielded them, cradling the range in cold for millions of years, while the rest of the world's mountains crumbled.
The ice that hides them is also the reason they still exist. [music] No human has ever seen a single one of those peaks. They rise thousands of feet into total darkness under 2 m of ice, and they have never once caught [music] the light. Now let the radar keep drawing. Follow the buried land east toward the coast toward the Denman glacier. And the ground drops away beneath you. It keeps dropping. [music] It goes down below sea level, far below into [music] a trough carved so deep that its floor sits more than 2 mi [music] beneath the level of the ocean.
It is the deepest point of land anywhere on the planet. Not the deepest ocean trench. That's something else filled with water. This is dry land or would be buried canyon walls plunging down into a darkness [music] that has no bottom you could see even if you were standing on the ice above it. The deepest [music] place your feet could theoretically stand on solid earth. And it is sealed away under a glacier. And no living thing has [music] ever looked into it.
We know it's there. The same way we know the mountains are there by an echo. A shape drawn in sound [music] hanging in the dark. Stand with that for a moment.
An Alpsiz mountain range no eye has witnessed. The deepest land on Earth unseen. All of it directly beneath a surface so blank [music] and white and featureless that from above it looks like the most boring [music] place imaginable. You have been taught your whole life to picture Antarctica as an empty, a nothing, a pale smudge at the bottom of the globe. [music] And the truth is that under that smudge is a hidden continent more dramatic than [music] most of the ones you can walk on. And we have barely begun to trace its outline. But here is the thing. The mountains, the [music] trench, the buried canyons, all of that. As strange [music] as it is, we can at least explain. We understand how mountains form and how [music] ice preserves them.
We have a story for the shape of the rock. And that's the part we can explain.
Below this, it gets stranger because the ice is not the bottom. You would think, wouldn't you, that when [music] you reach the rock, you've reached the end of the journey. Ice on top, [music] ground below, and between them just cold, hard contact. The frozen bottom of a frozen world. That's what everyone assumed for a long time, that whatever lay at the base of the ice sheet was locked solid, welded to the bedrock by unimaginable cold. And then the instrument started returning a signal that made no sense. flat, smooth, mirrorlike reflections coming back from the very base of the ice thousands of feet down. The kind of reflection [music] you get not from rock, not from ice, but from water, liquid water. Down there at the bottom of the coldest place on [music] the entire planet, under the crushing weight of miles of ice in absolute darkness, something was wet, and not a little. When they mapped those reflections out, they realized they weren't looking at damp [music] patches or trickles. They were looking at lakes.
Whole lakes sealed beneath the ice, hidden hidden from the sky, existing in a place that by every intuition should have been frozen solid to its core. And that discovery cracked the continent open into something no one was ready for. [music] Because here is what should not be possible. Water needs warmth to stay liquid. And there is no warmth down there. Not from the sun, not from the air, not from anything you can see. And yet the lakes are real. So where does the heat come from? It comes from two sources, both quiet, both patient. The first is the Earth itself. [music] The faint steady breath of geothermal heat rising up through the bedrock. the same slow warmth that has been leaking out of our planet's core since it formed.
[music] It's not much. You would never feel it. But it does not need to be much because the second source is the ice itself. 2 m of it, 3 m of it, pressing down with a weight so immense that it acts like a blanket, trapping that faint warmth, [music] sealing it in, refusing to let it escape. Pressure lowers the melting point. weight becomes heat becomes water. And so at the very floor of the ice sheet, [music] in a place engineered by nothing and no one to hold liquid, liquid gathers. And it has been gathering for a very, very [music] long time. Consider what that means for a moment. Picture the surface [music] again. That endless white plane, wind scouring it, temperatures that would freeze [music] exposed skin in seconds. Now sink your imagination straight [music] down through it. Down through the recent snow. Down through ice that fell as snow when the pyramids were [music] being built. Down through ice older than farming. Older than language. Older than our species [music] as we would recognize it. Down and down through 800,000 [music] years of frozen sky. Each layer holding a bubble of the very air that ancient [music] world breathed. A museum of atmospheres.
nobody curated. And at the bottom of all of that, where you would expect the deadest, hardest, [music] most lifeless place in existence, you find instead the gentle lap of water in the dark, not frozen, moving. We have counted more than 400 of these lakes now. 400 hidden bodies of water threaded beneath the ice like a secret plumbing [music] system, and we suspect there are many more we have not yet found. Some are small [music] ponds you could walk around in an afternoon if you could stand on their unseen shores. And some are so vast they defy the mind. The largest of them, the one we have known about the longest, lies beneath a research station [music] named for it. Sealed under nearly 2 and 1/2 miles of ice. It is the size of a great lake, roughly as long as the state of Ohio is wide, hundreds of feet deep in places, holding more water than most lakes you could name on the surface. And here is the detail that should [music] stop you cold. That lake has been sealed off from the sky, from the sun, from the rest of the living world [music] for something on the order of millions of years. 15 million by many estimates.
Long before there was any human being to wonder about it, that lid of ice closed over the water and never opened again.
Think about what 15 [music] million years of isolation actually does.
Everything you know, every civilization that has risen and fallen, [music] every animal you have ever seen, every war and love and word ever spoken [music] by a human being, all of it happened while that water sat undisturbed [music] in the dark, cut off, evolving on its own private timeline. Whatever fell into that lake before the ice sealed, [music] it has been down there ever since, alone, changing, becoming something we [music] have no name for. It is as close to another planet as you can get without leaving this one. A sealed world inside our world, running its own experiment.
And we were not invited to watch. And the water does not simply sit. That is the next thing that undid our assumptions. These lakes are not still [music] isolated puddles, each trapped in its own pocket of darkness forever.
They are connected. Rivers move between them. Real rivers, flowing rivers in the pitch black beneath the ice, [music] carrying water from one hidden lake to another over years and decades. We watched it happen almost by accident when satellites measuring the height of the ice surface noticed something impossible. whole regions of the surface, areas larger than cities, slowly rising, and then slowly falling over the course of [music] years. The ice was breathing, bulging up in one place, sinking in another. And when the [music] scientists worked out what could possibly cause that, the answer was a lake far below, draining, emptying itself through a channel none of us could see, [music] sending a flood of ancient water rushing downhill in the dark toward another lake miles away, which in turn swelled and lifted the ice above it. A drainage the size of a small sea moving beneath our instruments, invisible except for the faint rise and fall it left printed on the surface like a slow heartbeat. There is a whole hydraology down there. A hidden watershed with its own rivers and its own reservoirs and its own currents moving in perfect blackness at the bottom of the deadest place on earth.
And it has been running this way uninterrupted longer than there have been eyes to see it. Stand on that white plane and beneath your boots a river is flowing [music] that no light has ever touched. And it is going somewhere. It has been going somewhere the [music] entire time. Now hold all of that in your mind at once.
The buried mountains, the unseen trench, 800,000 years of frozen sky, 400 sealed lakes, rivers moving in the dark.
[music] One lake alone that has been closed off for 15 million years. Every layer of this we [music] uncovered by accident, by echo, by the faint tremor of a surface rising and falling. We did not go looking for a hidden world. We stumbled onto its edges and realized we were standing on the roof of it the whole time. And you might [music] think that was the strangest thing the ice had to give us. A landscape, a plumbing, a sealed and an ancient sea. But water on its own [music] is only water. It is what someone finally found living in that water that turned the [music] whole story into something else entirely.
Because once we understood the lakes were there, one question rose above all the others and would not go away. If there is liquid water down there, sealed for millions of years, warm enough to flow, rich with minerals ground off the bedrock, then is anything, could anything, possibly be alive in it?
[music] And for a long time, we did not dare to answer because to answer, we would have to drill. So we drilled and this is the moment the whole story pivots on. So slow down and picture it.
A drill site on a flat white nothing.
Wind screaming across the surface at temperatures that would kill you in minutes. A hot water drill. Essentially a jet of sterilized water under enormous pressure melting a needle thin [music] shaft straight down through the ice. Not 100 ft. Not a thousand. Down and down through layer after layer of [music] compressed snow that fell before there were cities. Before there was writing before there was us. Hour after hour after hour, the shaft descending into blackness that had never once been disturbed. And then more than half a mile beneath the surface, the drill broke through into water. Not a cave, not a crack, a lake. Liquid water held against the [music] rock by the crushing weight of the ice above it. Sealed off from the sky for so long that no calendar we have really contains the number. The team lowered instruments down that shaft into water that last saw daylight before human beings existed as a species. And they took a sample and they brought it up. And when they looked at it under a lens, in the cold and the wind at the top of the world, the water was not empty. It was alive.
Microbes, whole communities of them [music] thriving in absolute dark in water pressed under a mile of ice, cut off from the sun, cut off from the air, cut off from everything we thought life needed. No sunlight to power them, no plants, [music] no photosynthesis, nothing green anywhere in their entire universe. And yet there they were feeding, living off the rock itself, pulling energy out of minerals and chemicals [music] dissolved in that ancient water, building their bodies from stone and iron and sulfur. an entire ecosystem running on the bones of the continent instead of on the light of a star. Sit with that for a moment.
Everything you have ever seen alive owes its existence. One link or another down the chain [music] to sunlight. The tree, the grass, the animal that eats the grass, the animal that eats that [music] animal, all of it traces back to the sun. And here at the bottom of the deadest place on the planet was life that [music] had never needed it. Life that had walled itself off from the sun before our ancestors climbed down from the trees [music] and simply kept going in the dark on rock for longer than we can imagine. And here is why that finding did not stay a curiosity. Here is why it rewrote what people who [music] study these things allow themselves to dream about. Because if life can do that here, sealed under miles of ice, [music] no sun, no air, feeding on chemistry alone, then the ice moons of the outer solar [music] system stop being frozen dead rocks. Out past Jupiter, out past Saturn, there are moons wrapped in shells of ice with oceans of liquid water slloshing underneath. Kept warm not by sunlight, but by the pole of the giant planets they circle. For years, those oceans were a fascinating impossibility. And then a drill in Antarctica pulled up a cup of black water [music] full of living things that had done the exact thing we needed those oceans to be capable of. This continent didn't just hide a world beneath its ice. It handed us a rehearsal, a working model of what alien life might actually look like, living quietly at the bottom of our own planet the entire time. But the wonder has a shadow. And the shadow is this. If a lake sealed for a few hundred,000 years is alive, then what is living in Lake Vto, [music] closed off in the dark for 15 million? We have never gotten a clean sample of it. We have hovered at its edges, terrified of contaminating it with a single microbe [music] from our world. Because whatever has been evolving down there has been evolving alone in a private darkness for a span of time so long [music] that our whole civilization is a rounding error against it. 15 million years of life going its own way with no [music] reference to anything above. We genuinely do not know what is [music] in that water. And the honest truth is we may be almost afraid to find out. Vosto remains [music] a question mark and that is the shape of this place. Every answer it gives [music] you opens a door onto something larger and darker and older. The buried mountains led to the sealed lakes. The sealed lakes led to the hidden rivers.
[music] The rivers led to the living water. The living water leads to Vostto. [music] And Vostto leads to a question we cannot yet ask, let alone answer. A whole continent nearly one and a half times the [music] size of the United States, sitting there under its white sheet, mapped mostly by echoes and guesses.
Hundreds of its lakes never touched. Its deepest [music] trench never seen by a human eye. Its oldest water still holding whatever it holds. We did not leave this place unexplored [music] because there was nothing here. We left it alone because it is ancient [music] and buried and lethal and completely magnificently indifferent to whether we ever reached the bottom of it. It was here for tens of millions of years before the first human [music] drew breath, growing its ice, sealing its lakes, running its dark [music] rivers, keeping its living water. And it will be here doing all of that long after The Last of Us is gone. It never needed us to witness it. It simply is at the bottom of the world, breathing its slow heartbeat into the surface, keeping its secrets under two miles of blue black ice.
You will never look at that empty white map the same way again. Not now [music] that you know what's under it. So, here is what I want from you. of everything down there. The trench no eye has seen, the buried Alps mapped only by radar, the rivers moving in the dark, and most of all, Lake Vtok, that 15 millionyear sea we have never dared to open.
