Successful barramundi fishing requires a proactive approach where anglers explore new areas when fish are not biting at known spots, use appropriate lures like the 'old dog' lure, and employ proper net handling techniques to land fish safely; the video demonstrates that patience, adaptability, and understanding fish behavior are key to catching barramundi, with successful catches ranging from 47cm to 92cm+ and emphasizing the importance of changing hooks when they become damaged.

>> Morning.
>> Morning.
>> Well, we're off to a late start this morning.
>> Again.
>> We had to do Well, Rachel done the washing.
I Yeah, look at this.
>> going on?
>> Bloody muddled me birds.
>> Oh, I just crashed.
>> Bloody hell, Rachel.
>> I know. [ __ ] >> Hey?
>> I hate it.
>> Yeah, so a bit of a late start. We had to do the washing, make a few phone calls, made a [ __ ] made a rebooking for another week here.
Yeah, so we found the fishing yesterday.
Good. We had a great day. So, um hopefully we'll have another good day today. We Our plans are sort of getting a bit more structured now what we're doing after a lot of looking around.
And um yeah, so Anyway, really sort of really enjoying staying here longer than just the 4 days we normally do here.
It's just good to look around and I found just explored so many little creeks now that always wanted to do just cuz I was sort of limited for time. I just went and kept going to the places I know or places where the fish were or So, we did a lap straight up and there was no fish there. So, well, the fish was there. Heaps of fish were there on the sand and we just they just weren't biting. So, it was good while to take that opportunity to um Yeah, just ignore it instead of keep trying and just go looking. So, which we always love doing.
I've got a few good places on the list now I just want to get back to.
But um where these fish are, we'll keep hunting them for the minute. Name the game. And then, if they drop off, we'll go explore back those other areas that I like. So, yeah, hopefully just get a few fish under the belt.
Get the monkey off our back, hey Raj?
>> Yep.
>> We've got to get a dollar.
>> Yep, ready for the dollar now.
>> We're ready for the dollar now.
Yep, ready for the big one. Right, hey Raj? Let's go.
>> Let's nail it. Well, as fast as we can nail it in the number.
>> [laughter] >> Raj said, "I'm ready for a faster boat, Jason." I said, "Well, guess what?"
Well, she's ready for chilly burn now.
Raj said, "We need it faster. Takes too long to get down to the spots."
>> But, still economical.
>> But, still economical.
So, yesterday I filled up.
And uh sport of me on fill up was that 33 L I used.
Look at that.
So, 33 L I I tried to recalibrate that yesterday.
Cuz it was saying I was using about 8 more liters than uh what it was.
So, I just went in and it said set to full.
You set it to full or add the amount that you put in.
[ __ ] So, I I hit um added the amount.
And maybe that's recalibrated it cuz that's right exactly what happened there. So, right on then.
Okay.
Go.
>> Launcher. Yep.
>> Launcher.
Nice.
Nice bait.
What a way to start the day. He just had a honker of one.
Spaddy's dropped it in Spaddy's lure.

>> Proactive.
I'm really grasping like how fast to sink it, where it actually's landing in distance, um knowing how far it is in sinking.
Um Anyway, I'm really focusing and I've really started to >> So, there's barras up in that top there on this spot.
>> So, I've been moving this around a bit myself, too, to to try and see if I can really see where the barra are.
And then I thought, "Over here in the bit shallow." Cuz I really dropping into the trench almost up into the shallow.

>> That's my first connection, though.
>> I know.
>> It was a good fish.
>> how good that you could see exactly spin around on it for you. It was so good.
>> Yeah.
>> That was a good fish, too. And then it went >> It was just distinct and it turns around.
>> It just instantly 180. Yeah, it was pretty cool.
>> When they turn, it's distinctly you can see it then it's a barra. Like it's different to it just sitting on the I don't know, it's different.
>> Yeah.
100%.
It just spun straight around fast.
And then just motored towards it.
>> Yeah, that was definitely a good feeling. I'd rather my throttle I should get to keep >> Oh, it's a good fish. It just launched clean out the water.

Every night we've come home is a different color from oranges, purples, clouds, clear, stars.
That is beautiful.
As I've said a few times in this video, whether it's on the water, out your back veranda, in your house, on a motel, on a cruise ship, whatever it is you need to do, you just soak in the moment. Just do it.
Don't wait for tomorrow.
Laugh it up with your family, your partner, your wife, your kids, whatever it may be, just do it. I waited a lot of years. I have suffered suffered a lot of things like depression, which you know everyone likes to talk about.
But honestly, I quite live in the moment now.
It's such a good feeling.
It brings tears to my I nearly have tears in my eyes.
I have tears in my eyes.
Honestly, just just live in the moment with whoever you're around, whether it's friends, family, wives, girlfriends, children.
Yeah.
And it doesn't have to be on the water, but if you're not on the water, you can look out your back door and you'll see a sunset, and it's the most amazing thing of nature, its colors, and it's starting a new day. It means you've got through a new day. Even if it's a [ __ ] day, even even the worst [ __ ] day, you means you've got through it, and you're going to wake up to a new day.
Honestly, hold on to that.
Hold on to that moment.
First troll, once again, after being in Crocken, we've come back to McCartha, and Jason banned.
No, he's serious.
It's too much.
And I s- And I Percy put on a [ __ ] lure. No, not [ __ ] >> Not a [ __ ] >> Uh we like old dog lures, but we're I we're being running 5 m, and he went and put a random on, and still >> Hit a tree.
>> Oh.
>> All right, go on.
>> Go on.
You see his You see what he had to s- couldn't even get his head out hardly.
>> Yeah, I know. He was big. He He struggled to do the Oh, he struggled >> to get his head out the water.
>> Yes, I did see all that.
>> All right.
>> Yeah, so we got >> what? I My rule is change the hooks out.
Didn't bend them. Every one of them.
>> Old dog lure.
>> Anyway, >> That's what he was running.
>> Good old old dog. Look at him.
I said, "What are you doing running that?"
>> He said, "You'd be surprised."
>> No, he didn't say that.
Second troll.
Jase.
>> On the old dog lure again.
How often do you see peanuts like You know what the biggest one Look at this fish.

Unbelievable.
He's pretty frisky today.
All right, yeah.
Probably just swim.
She's got a bit of go.
Mhm. Shoot.
Now he's going under.
Beautiful.
I don't know if it's a tree. Mhm.
>> [sighs] >> Oh.
I think he's probably just making a hard work.
>> think so. Yeah, he's probably not the >> She's hard to hang on to I can tell you.
>> Okay.
>> Little mossy back.
All right.
>> Okay.
>> Good fish though.
>> Yeah.
>> Good job mate.
I'll tell you what.
>> No, you go bigger than you thought.
>> It just goes to show you how big that Last one just jumped out of the >> Yes, who hardly could get out of the water.
>> Cuz that that made that one look like a pup.
>> Yes, it did.
>> Ah, there you go. Look at that.
There's a little rocket.
Another silver rocket.
>> Yeah, it's going all right our old dog.
>> I'm going to show you the little um >> No, just go.
>> 92 >> 92, yep.
>> 92 Come on Rach, you go.
>> I'm done for today.
>> Look at this.
>> This is how easy Jason catch fish. We were just winding in to turn around to do a new troll.
Didn't have to try and it seems okay.
>> Rach, here it comes again.
>> Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Yep.
>> The old old lure strike again.
>> Yeah, she did. Yeah.
>> Little silver rocket.
>> So, I set it around the 5 m we put on the 10 ft old yeah, old dog lure.
>> All right.
Little bit of hurt.
>> And literally we were winding in >> to turn around >> to turn around.
>> [clears throat] >> Got my little caster rod again.
It's going to be another battle.
>> Ooh.
>> I told myself I should upgrade those hooks.
Cuz they're pretty good size fish.
>> Yeah, they're not being small.
>> How big? 90?
>> Yeah, she looked decent jumping out.
I'm nearly going donut day. Well, caught a salmon, but not a barra.
>> Take it easy, man.
>> I'm nearly going to shed a tear.
And I'm not I'm not I mean, I could. I'm nearly getting emotional.
>> [clears throat] >> Take it nice and easy.
Easy on those hooks.
>> Mhm.
Ooh.
>> She's not ready.
>> She's not ready.
Ooh.
Oh, [ __ ] >> The line is under the boat.
>> Oh.
Don't cut it.
>> I know.
>> Oh, don't cut the line. Oh.
>> I know.
>> Ooh.
What you going to do, mate? Oh.
>> Good save.
>> That was close.
>> I can feel him in the hole.
>> Mhm.
Oh.
Come on.
>> Here it is, Ratch.
Here it is.
>> Okay.
>> Oh, sorry, mate.
81.
>> Yeah.
>> [panting] >> Sorry, I'm not sure what what what filming happened then. They get heavy to lift up and film.
There we go. Look at that.
There you go.
The little >> Little silver rocket.
>> Old dog Lewis.
>> Little silver rocket doing the trick.
Little lure that I just got hooked into.
>> And again, four day.
>> Ah, that felt like something [ __ ] weird.
>> Oh, 47.
>> Here we go, the start.
>> I shouldn't say.
But I would have cried if he caught another barra.
Morning.
>> Good morning.
>> We're up early this morning.
>> early on Mother's Day morning.
>> Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there.
We text their mom last night, so she could get the message this morning.
>> Yep.
>> Give your mother a text up in heavenly heaven?
>> I did. Sent her good thoughts this morning.
>> Yep.
>> I'm ready to nail barra today.
>> And Rachel's got redemption day. She had her first donut day yesterday.
>> I caught a salmon, but no barra. That's not nice.
>> You got a day to make up, so she Overcast this morning, beautiful temperature, little bit windy.
We got out of bed by 10 10:00 last night, and we're on the on the water. It's about 5:30, quarter to 6 something now.
Friday.
I'll put this back in the bait.
And we'll get on.
All right, I'm going to keep this little fish.
>> It's our first fish we keeping.
>> First barra we've kept.
>> To have a feed.
>> Yep.
Going to eat him.
>> First little one.
We never keep big girls.
They're your breeders.
>> For the size we want to eat a piece of.
How many days we've been fishing? 10.
10 days fishing. So [clears throat] we've got a >> let's keep This is our first. Oh, sorry, we did keep a salmon cuz we're going to try that.
>> Yeah, but um >> King eater. King eater.
>> barra to keep. And it's the And it's the first sort of smaller one.
>> Actually, yeah, this is the first small >> Oh, we kept a couple of rats we got earlier.
I thought we'd keep him. This is my little fillet table.
>> Yeah.
Hard on his knees.
>> All done.
I have filleted a few barra in my time.
You can start from there, you can go into there, and go that way and backwards.
That way so the scales pull up and down with the flat of your knife. That's one way of doing it.
Not through there. Or you can go through the scales that way that way.
Either way.
Just in there.
Get at the backbone. Everyone does it different.
No right and wrong way.
As long as you get the maximum amount >> And if you don't get all the meat >> It [clears throat] is what it is.
Yeah. The only one I bend down less for all the back gets aching and the knees get sore.
That's why I don't fillet them too many.
>> Oh, we just don't We prefer fish fresh.
We don't >> There we go.
I've got the mud crabs on that one.
Then I just use the edge of popper. Works pretty good.
Skin it.
I get the thumb.
You can use a better knife than this, but this one's working for me.
>> So we don't do too much filleting.
>> I've got a rag and a bucket of water.
Slide the skin off like that.
One done.
The deck wash has died.
>> Mhm, switch. That can be used out.
>> So I have to use our rag to clean them all up here. I use the hose to wash the deck with a bit of soap.
>> Normally, but anyway.
I said we didn't do any maintenance prior on this trip too as well.
>> Pull that black [ __ ] off the back.
There we go.
We did bring a um jet boil and a frying pan.
I don't think we could [ __ ] doing that.
>> Another fish or on when we aren't cooking. One day you might see us.
>> One day we might cook.
>> We might.
>> We just like we like to turn them on crackers.
>> Yeah, we'll show you our little >> I turn them on crackers here.
>> Hang on to this properly.
>> Put that right in the bag.
That there.
>> This is your old snap lock bag.
>> That's all the black [ __ ] off the back.
There we go.
>> Clean out. Now he'll do the clean up mode.
>> Quick as that.
Rag, you wipe down.
We might do that a couple of times. I might take one or two fish home for family friends.
Some people take their fish and they're entitled to that and they can do what they please. That's great for them.
Happy for them.
>> We should definitely film this. Watch this footage clean.
See that old deck wash he soaked it in.
Oh, you know why?
You know, I wonder why it was cleaner after.
I use that piece of timber. Oh, yes you do. You don't usually use that piece.
>> only use that piece.
>> Yeah.
Yeah.
>> That's what's going on that space.
Look at Mr. Alligator over there having a sleep.
He's in the sun under the trees.
Getting closer.
Not bad size crocodile.
Look at his pretty tail, Rachel.
Colors are amazing, hey?
Hey, buddy.
Stop zooming in on him.
Camera doesn't really zoom much.
Oh, Rachel's got the old goldie.
Are you proactive?
Come on, Rach.
>> Yeah.
>> A blue salmon.
It's a fishing in this area.
Good job.
GOOD JOB, RACH.
>> [laughter] >> HEY, GOOD JOB. WELL, KEEP THAT ONE TO WEIGH.
>> On the actives.
>> Yeah.
>> I can see him out there.
Right down the hole.
>> Good job. Want to keep him?
Oh, he's probably only too small, eh?
Give me a leg up, but All right, a good job.
>> Let's have a look.
>> If you want to keep him, I'll keep him.
So, I'll knock the size of him.
>> We'll just make sure.
>> Save his It's about 60 we want.
>> I think I got that on camera, too. Oh, we seen him, too. She's coming in, that girl.
>> Yeah, I know that one.
>> You seen her coming?
>> Yeah, we saw her swimming in the thing coming on the ledge.
>> Yeah.
>> A little bit of white.
>> Mhm.
>> They're a bit little different on the I'll be a good fellow.
Not coming up yet.
>> Mhm.
>> What do you know, eh?
>> Yes, yes. I'm going to pull it up.
>> Easy, tiger.
Easy on the hooks.
Come on.
I can feel a hook dropping.
>> Oh, see that's what was me the other day.
>> That's what I thought, he's on the hooks.
>> It's a [ __ ] feeling cuz I you feel it now.
It's That was me the other day and my big girl.
>> He's got a tree. Jesus.
>> He might He might come out though.
>> He might.
>> [music] >> And that drilled me.
>> Got Parson coming to me this way. Out of the tree.
Coming? [music] No.
I reckon go up that way and you might you might. [music] >> You meant business.
I got it.
He's still on He's still on He's still on I got him.
>> He's coming. He's coming.
>> He's out.
Oh, you're a thinker, Rachel.
>> I told you to come out behind the snag, eh?
As long as it don't work for me cuz I don't land them.
And I've been trying.
He can pick out whatever rod, don't matter, whatever lure, and it catches a barra.
>> Turn that off and deal with it now.
Have to get that net.
>> Yes.
>> I forgot I dropped the hook to this one.
>> Mhm.
He's already had a couple of those.
>> [sighs] >> But I'm not dying at day. I did catch a barra, but it was only on the Well, live target live active active target, whatever you want to call it. I call it proactive.
And I've got some finger mark and a barra, so I'm not It was only small, but don't matter.
I landed it. So, no dying at day, but I still would like to land a fish that he's been landing.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> I called.
>> That's what I >> That's karma for trying to out fish your wife, cuz you shouldn't do that on today.
>> That's why I have them in the trees.
They're dirty.
>> Mother's Day and all. You'd think he'd let me catch a big fish.
>> Yeah, you want this thing, do you?
>> No. You can keep that.
I should delete the e- >> They're all bad, mate. So, don't bring them in the boat. They're dirty.
>> No, we should even delete this video.
Or can we laugh at it? Or would I?
>> I guess what I had the last one, too.
It's got much the same sort of [ __ ] All right, 86.
>> Woo, good girl.
Ready?
Ready?
>> Yep, 86. Go.
Holy.
>> That was an expedition. We should have had that on camera. I might have swore a lot, and I definitely told Jason definitely help me out there. [ __ ] this up, and I might have been promising things that you shouldn't promise men, but >> [laughter] >> cuz I wanted that >> Like a new rod and reel.
>> I wanted [laughter] that fish in the boat, and it wrapped around >> All those standard hooks on that classic brace. I'm not coming by the change.
They're all [ __ ] >> [ __ ] I got to change them now.
>> They're all [ __ ] >> This is why you change them.
>> twisted that barrel cuz it was just trying to buff out of that snag.
>> That's why you got to change them.
Jason's got barrel that we can't even get off.
>> Yeah.
86 rate.
>> Oh, she was No, I was proud of [ __ ] >> That was the fattest fish. That's fatter than a 92's even.
Just thick set, hey.
>> Did you weigh her? How thick was she?
>> All right. I'm going to get back into it.
>> Oh, the state of these hooks.
>> All right, what happened?
>> What happened was I finally hooked a big barra.
>> Anyway, it come straight into here. We We didn't >> man handled today.
>> Right, she was squirming that much we didn't have time to get the video. It's wrapped the tree here.
>> Yeah, he swam up and then round it and then Jason's like, "Oh my god."
>> It kept jumping and jumping and going around.
>> cutting the line. I didn't want it to cut and I'm like, "Don't hold tension."
>> "Just I said to Rach, just wait. It'll float If it doesn't bust off, it'll float up."
We got it.
>> Oh, thank god. Good girl. Good girl.
Good girl.
>> There you go, Rach.
That is one solid fish.
>> Good girl. Good girl.
>> That was an absolute dilemma, I can tell you.
It's wrapped the snag.
It's coming out of the water. Rach was squirming at me.
She was nearly shaking. She was nearly crying.
I was just trying to tell her to calm down. All I could >> [laughter] >> I couldn't get it. Just let it take your time cuz they float up if they're not going to bust off straight away, so eventually, so and it did and I just scooped. I broke the branch off with my hand actually then I scooped it.
I can tell you that was a mission.
I can Hey, I'm actually going to measure it.
That's a good fish, Rach.
Careful.
Anyway.
I'll have to help her.
>> It's not a cod cuz I I find can't say cod or cod, but >> What do you get?
>> Check it and hit and hit. I thought there's no snags out there. I thought I had a hit a bit of a snag and ran it.
I can accept that.
Think of a mark. That's doable.
We like it. Cod.
Look at the cute little thing.
Okay.
>> It's as long as the lure.
That's a good figure mark, hey. It's not a bad size. I I don't know what size.
We kept one today, too. It was one I got this morning.
We're going to eat it for tea if we ever get home before 9:00 10:00. [music] If we ever get home before 9:00 10:00, we'll probably eat some fish.
We'll give that a go.
We just put We just put [ __ ] in the pie oven.
11:00 12:00 11:00 pre-cooked meals.
By the time we put them in from the ramp >> Pre-cooked No, I've cooked them.
>> Yeah, Rachel's cooked them. By the time we put them out of the ramp and we actually drive back and fill up the boat and back, it's hot.
>> And we'll empty the bin.
>> Yeah.
>> Retop up the water, the beers, the um >> Rachel does that while I have a shower.
>> And then then we plug the boat in.
She's pretty much ready cuz I defrost it the night before in the fridge.
>> Yeah.
>> Honestly, and we're having apricot chickens, creamy button mushroom pasta, um curry mince and mash, chicken and mash. Like you can >> All the [ __ ] we've had from home, it's just pre-cooked it. Put in the oven.
Like as soon as you get back to the ramp, put it straight in.
Time you get back and just >> need one meal, cuz you don't need much.
>> Yeah, we have one awful dish and we just share it. It's a more than enough.
>> We don't need anything. Just one share the awful dish.
>> No dishes.
>> Cuz who wants to do that [ __ ] on holidays? Dishes.
I know.
I do that. No, I don't have a dishwasher. I do enough.
>> Ready?
What do you got, Rachel? Look at this.
>> Look at the cutest thing ever. That's the only cute in the barrel.
>> Look at that Look at the size of that ballsy of that little goldy. Finger mark.
>> Look at the size of that little lure.
>> The lure is nearly as long as the fish.
That is a Look at it.
>> Aw.
Look at him.
Do you think he's close to working?
>> Yep. All right.
>> That That is the cutest thing ever, honestly.
>> Rachel's enjoying the cut and dry today.
>> Oh, I of course I'm cute little Barbie, but that >> [laughter] >> That's ridiculous.
>> All right, all right.
>> I don't want to say, but I was nearly peeing my pants in ex- nearly peeing my pants [laughter] in excitement. No, Vic.
Service luring is >> Come on, go again.
>> Oh.
>> Babe just went past.
Reggie and Mitch, let's see him out the boys.
Great to meet you, Mitch.
Heading back to home.
>> And I had it on and then he got off and then he come again and he followed.
>> He's kept hitting it.
No hookup, but >> No.
>> The fool.
>> But if excitement is there.
He's telling that I'm going to call him in. He's going to pick on me.
>> Call him in.
Why you can call him in.
I let him wave stop.
Just just dead quiet.
All right.
>> You want to follow that through with the bite here.
>> All right.
>> Ready?
>> Yep.
Go.
All right.
>> I know he's there.
I know you want to eat it.
>> Oh.
It's all quiet in there now.
>> Okay.
>> All right. I got it.
>> And >> up this edge.
>> You go back there, Jason.
>> We'll go that way.
>> He's going that way.
>> Come on.
Oh. Oh.
>> Oh.
>> He's He's there.
>> Oh.
Now both of them are just circling it. Might be salmon or something.
Surely he can eat it.
>> Come on.
Swallow it.
>> Go.
>> Oh.
>> Oh, hear that barrel.
>> Oh.
Are you getting excited? And you guys are only if you're watching this >> [laughter] >> you must be on the edge of your seat.
Oh, this is like you can't get better.
Honestly, [laughter] I love it. This time of night, third person, oh.
>> Go again.
The barrel broke just over there, so oh.
>> Oh, sorry. Hang on. Follow you.
>> All right. You got one more two more goes at this and I'm putting it down.
>> All right.
>> Then I'm going.
>> It's the film pressure that gets to me like a pop star.
>> [laughter] >> It gets to me.
Pressure's on. Pressure's on.
All right. Who's out there? Wait.
He's coming.
Oh, no.
>> No, you cut off.
>> Yeah.
