Are Food Prices Too High? Price Checking at a Popular Grocery Chain in Trinidad 🇹🇹

[00:00:11]We're going to do some price checking.

[00:00:13]We're going to shop and see what the prices are in Trinidad and Tobago. With the average salary being $9,800 per month, what are people able to buy with that?

[00:00:27]We're going to check it out on the inside.

[00:00:30]Okay, we're on the inside here. We're going to start with different things that are available here in the grocery store.

[00:00:38]Right here we have chicken.

[00:00:41]This is one of my favorite. You can actually get a full rotisserie chicken and that is just $62.

[00:00:55]Need a sandwich?

[00:00:57]Yeah, good old sandwich.

[00:00:59]Look at that. It's some beef or actually it's a sausage sandwich and that's just $16.

[00:01:16]This is one of the largest grocery stores here in Trinidad.

[00:01:30]When it comes to items that are imported, there is a tax on it.

[00:01:34]Others may not carry a tax.

[00:01:38]Average loaf of bread $18.

[00:01:50]Obviously there are different types of bread. This one is whole wheat and oats that is $16.

[00:02:07]Oh, I can't miss the snack aisle, you know that.

[00:02:12]And there's a bunch of corn curl here.

[00:02:14]There's everything like that.

[00:02:16]Nice pack of winter cherries, $18.

[00:02:24]And good old salt prune, you got a nice pack of salt prune here for $6.95.

[00:02:43]Oh, you like hops bread? This is hops bread here in Trinidad.

[00:02:49]This is all TT dollars.

[00:02:51]If you want to get the conversion, just know that it's in terms of the USA, it's seven, approximately $7 TT to one US dollar.

[00:07:21]We saw a lot of this at the market and other places. This pineapple here is $30.47 and a very big pineapple, but nevertheless not much of a difference to the market in this case.

[00:07:55]And if you just want a head of lettuce, a local head of lettuce, this is $10.

[00:08:07]Um when I say not bad, I'm not saying that the prices aren't high. I'm just making you make your own decision. I'm just comparing it with the market, the farmers market and the central market.

[00:08:21]So when I say not bad, I mean in comparison to that.

[00:08:31]One sweet potato, make a nice sweet potato pie here.

[00:08:36]Or sweet potato, $9.40 >> [music] >> a pound.

[00:08:50]And if you want a lime, that will cost you today $3 for a lime.

[00:09:00]But if you lime it with some friends, that could be free.

[00:09:10]Nice bag of potatoes here.

[00:09:16]All the whole potatoes, this bag will cost you $20 and $0.59.

[00:09:24]There is about five potatoes in it, medium size potatoes.

[00:10:13]Rather a nice big piece of pumpkin, look like.

[00:10:19]It's $7 per kilogram and this piece here will cost you $9.45.

[00:10:33]It's giving you an idea of what things cost today in Trinidad and Tobago.

[00:10:41]Not advise to buy this way, but if you feel like buying a cup of watermelon a fruit cup, this is $17.33.

[00:10:52]My advice, buy the whole and cut it up.

[00:10:58]Strawberries, definitely imported. $107 and 95 cents.

[00:11:06]Grapes, another import.

[00:11:09]This little bag here will cost you $25 and 99 cents.

[00:11:25]Apples, if you want an apple in the market on the grocery here, this apple $6.25.

[00:11:50]When the counter wave you get a lot of cans and also dry goods as well.

[00:12:00]I'd say uh lasagna, you know you like your lasagna and you want to get your lasagna.

[00:12:08]$18.25 to get a nice box of this and I think you could go home happy with that.

[00:12:14]The different prices, of course. Some is good as low as $16.95.

[00:27:45]Don't go up to the cash register and have them turn you away because the price is different. A lot of water and things I got on this backside.

[00:28:13]Back here it's a little cheaper on the tissue, but it's $29.30 $29.50 for a 12 pack.

[00:28:28]Amazingly, some people watch these prices and say they're way expensive.

[00:28:32]And some people say, "Wow, I'm going over there tomorrow. It's really cheap."
