Province rallies behind Alex Newhook as Game 7 gets underway in Buffalo

[00:00:00]St. John's native Alex Newhook will be lacing up his skates tonight for the game seven between the Montreal Canadiens and the Buffalo Sabres. Here in Newfoundland and Labrador, support for Newhook and the Habs is skyrocketing. NTV's Beth Penny has more in this report.

[00:00:20]The Montreal Canadiens are one win away from playing in the Eastern Conference finals and one step closer to the Stanley Cup. Tonight in Buffalo, the Sabres and the Habs will square off and St. John's native Alex Newhook will be playing a big role for his Montreal team. Newfoundland players are always popular around here. We certainly are always doing jerseys up and things like that, but certainly he's on a a great little run now and we've been sending up jerseys to get done and he's well represented. 25-year-old Alex Newhook has had an incredible post-season run, scoring six goals in 13 games so far. His hot streak is cause for celebration off the ice, too. In his hometown at Maverick Sports and Collectibles, his jerseys are flying off the shelves. Three come in and two of them went right away. We've got one left here now, but we're sending some up to get done every day pretty much now.

[00:01:17]Development coach Andrew Pearcy has worked with Newhook and he says his sudden breakout is no surprise and that's not the only Newhook that he's taken under his wing. Sister Abby Newhook just finished her rookie season with the Boston Fleet of the PHWL and she was a fifth-round draft pick, but her seven goals and seven assists placed her fifth in rookie scoring this year. Most of the time, those types of players you don't get as many looks, but she had such a great training camp and then parlayed that into a great season.

[00:01:48]And a proud mom, Paula Newhook says both Abby and Alex are incredibly hard working and the family has enjoyed celebrating their success. It a ton of fun. I mean, we have been following the kids around and yeah, it's been super fun just being a part of it and being able to experience it with them. I mean, they've they've put in a lot of hard work and you know, I'm just happy to see them their dreams come true, really. And the winner of tonight's game will go on to play the undefeated Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final. Beth Penney, NTV News.
