[00:00:36]>> Monica, can I just quickly ask you about President Biden suing the Justice Department? President Trump was asked what he thought of that. He's suing the Justice Department's over the release of audio from memoir interviews that he did with a ghostwriter. Can you explain?

[00:00:51]>> Yeah, so this is in relation to a book that was out years ago that the Justice Department originally said those recordings could be kept from being made public and then there was a reversal on that after the Heritage Foundation, a conservative group, filed a Freedom of Information Request seeking to make those recordings, those conversations between the former president and his ghostwriter public. And so now the current Department of Justice under the Trump administration is saying that yes, those can be potentially made public.

[00:01:24]And so essentially former President Biden and his attorneys are trying to counter that or trying to argue that that should not be the case. But if they are not successful, it is possible those recordings could be released to the public, Kate, by or around June 15th. So we'll see how that plays out over the coming weeks, but the president said that he would be supportive of those potentially coming out, but of course there's a question here of what that would mean for future presidents, which could of course include Donald Trump and how that would apply to him and any other potential future suits.

[00:05:10]The recordings were obtained by special counsel Robert Hur, and he was appointed to investigate whether Biden had unlawfully retained classified documents at his home after serving as vice president under Barack Obama.

[00:05:24]So, remember that, okay? And in May, the Heritage Founda- Foundation, a conservative think tank, and I hate that name.

[00:05:35]Filed a lawsuit under the Freedom of Information Act seeking access to the files. Biden's lawyers argued that releasing them would violate his privacy.

[00:06:04]Every American, including a sitting or former vice president, has a right to privacy in the personal conversations he has within his own home, the uh the lawsuit said, according to the Washington Post.

[00:06:15]In his final report released in 2024, Hur concluded that Biden had willfully retained and disclosed classified materials, including documents related to military policy in Afghanistan, but declined to recommend criminal charges.

[00:06:27]Hur wrote that Biden's memoir appeared significantly limited during both the 2017 interviews with the ghostwriter and later interviews with the special counsel. He further argued that in if the case went to trial, Biden would like uh would likely present himself to a jury as a sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with poor memory.
