Whoever controls the Chinese countryside controls China. Everything else was a consequence of that single strategic insight. The nationalist government controlled the cities, the banks, the foreign relationships, and the official military apparatus. By every conventional measure of [music] state power, Chiang Kai-shek should have won.

Mao built his army from the countryside up. Land redistribution, local governance, military recruitment from the peasant population. The Communist Party embedded itself into the fabric of rural Chinese life while the nationalists were managing their relationships with Shanghai banking interests and American advisers. By the time the Civil War reached its decisive phase in 1948, the nationalists had lost the population that actually constituted China. The cities fell because the countryside had already been decided.
