It's just it's a weird spot to be in because I look I don't is there anybody in here that expected RPO Burell to get fired >> maybe >> like again I think that if you want to have the conversation it's it's clearly totally fair but did any of us expect that and another thing that I was texting you about last night was like about Nico felt different with the fan base because even during the multiple seasons that portions of the fan base were ready for Josh Wolf ago, right?

[00:04:20]>> To me, until the very end, to me, that period of this franchise never felt as uh I guess overwhelmingly pulling in the same direction in terms of the fan base.

[00:04:34]I didn't see all that to say, I did not see one defense of Nico Estz and the job he did coaching this year. Um, which I think was was a it stood out to me as a difference. Not just because we were quicker to get to it with this coach than the previous one, but I just thought overall it seemed like everybody after Saturday night was on that same page.

[00:04:58]>> Yeah. I mean, it's been interesting with Nico right because it started almost at the very beginning where everyone was kind of underwhelmed about the hire.

[00:05:08]even you know we were underwhelmed about it and you know we talked about one of the big blemishes for Roto being the names you wouldn't believe and then you go out and get Nico from a rival club who just fired him who's got like a 35% win percentage over his career or something along those lines and you bring him in and you know we were we were as a fan base collectively looking forward to to moving on and the rebuild.

[00:05:38]We had leaned into that. We knew we were going to be shitty for a little bit here and then you bring in Nico and it's just such an underwhelming hire that from the start I think people were mad and like you know I've maintained and we have maintained that I thought last year was a success overall. Um but with the last five six weeks with what's going on with this team man it's just like you said where where do you keep your job where these are the results for the last six weeks?

[00:06:05]>> Yeah. Well, and there was multiple fans who at the time of the Nico hire weren't waiting in the waters of like underwhelmed who were just like this is a bad hire and it's a huge blemish on Rulo because he and then right then you get into fans having conversations about well is it be is it a budget hire right does Anthony Precourt have you know a huge say in was he the someone who was like, "We I want to hire Nico." Right? And you have those conversations to which you're just never going to know the answer unless you're inside that building, >> right?

[00:06:45]>> Let's obviously, again, we can obviously sit here and talk about this team for hours on end, just us two. So, I saw Mackie in here saying, "Right, it's the news you wouldn't believe today for sure." Our buddy Dave Smith in here saying, "Let's get the party started." D in here saying, uh, or Decorporatize, I should I should say the entire name there. He said, "Are you guys happy about Roto leaving as well?" I thought he did pretty well other than the Nico hiring. And I'm pretty sure that his hands were tied on that one. So again, right, that's getting right into what I was saying where it's like as a fan sometimes you're left to speculate about some of those things. But I'll let you answer that question as I do. E, for those who are tuned in here live, I have new toys that I'm excited to to play around with here today. [laughter] So let's go ahead and start this first poll. For those who are here live, do you agree with the firing of Ralpho Burell? All you got to do in that YouTube live chat, one for yes, two for no, and we'll see how the people feel here. E, in real time, what are your thoughts about the move?

[00:07:44]>> I I'm not happy for sure. I'm not happy about it. Um, do I understand it somewhat? Yeah. you know, and part of the reason why I'm not happy about it is you got to assume the new dude coming in here is gonna want to have his own vision for what the club is going to look like. And to me, that's going to signal you're going to be making a lot of changes here and you're potentially going through another rebuild when again, you know, some of the stuff that was said where it was like, I need three windows to get this team where I want. we passed that mark, you know, and we're not where we want to be. I don't think obviously with this with this, uh, you know, news today, it's pretty clear that nobody in the organization really feels good about where we're at right now. Um, but again, I just, you know, I said it, uh, I've said it plenty of times, which just like I think that the connections Roto has, the standing he has, I obviously news is coming out from soccer-wise now, and we're not privy to that stuff, of course, but of course there's people that he rubbed the wrong way or or didn't, you know, uh, get along with, what have you in the organization. So, there see, you know, we talked about the vapors and the odors, >> you know, I guess our noses weren't working. various voters.

[00:09:02]>> Yeah, because there was some real stink coming out of this, man. And like uh overall, no, I I I'm I'm not happy about it. But he hired Nico and it's insane to me that he hired Nico and that we just lost Ralph Oo Brell because he was tied to Nico's death. like you you hitched your wagon to that horse and like I that that is just absolutely insane to me.

[00:09:31]>> Yeah, I think again I think that's fair and again I'm through the first what has it been like 90 minutes almost two hours since the news dropped something like that. Um you know I think I'm I'm I'm surprised.

[00:09:50]I still haven't gotten to a point where I feel like I'm upset about it. Um I think just because of the idea of a fresh start to me like I think that pleases more of the fan base than not >> and I think that's important in this moment.

[00:10:08]>> So again, but you you better you better hire a guy who's you know I think Roto is I I think you you would be hardressed to make an argument that he was not a good sporting director. I think you're just as hardressed to make an argument that he was anywhere above that given the results, given the fact like, of course, we're we're way into the salary cap stuff and and the rules and roster regulations, but how much more game do we have now than when he got here? I know it was way worse and he did some good things to to try to work us out of that, but it's, you know, we've just seen other teams be able to turn around and and >> flip their fortunes in a much swifter fashion in this league. Uh, and that's one thing that that I think is is undeniable that it's it's not even undeniable. It's it's not up for debate that Roto came in and said, "I need two to three windows and we passed that a while ago."

[00:10:58]>> Yeah. No, I mean, I I understand why some people are upset and um I but I'm still just I don't know, man. I I think the dude at least deserves two two head coaching hires. I personally, but again, you know, I talked about last night on the episode, >> did Nico deserve a healthy team in this season? Yeah, probably. But shit's unfair and if it doesn't work out, this is also part of the gig if you're an SD like >> Yeah. And like >> territory, >> right? If you listen to Soccer Wise, right, which we did uh before before we went live here and like if you've got somebody like Tom Bogurt saying those things, right? It's coming from somebody with knowledge of the situation. and like he's not going to put something out there Tom that is something out there like that if he's not sure that like this is an experience that somebody I trust had right >> um so there's clearly stuff going on behind the scenes that your average fan is not privy to um >> in situations like this I would also point to the fact that there's probably like another side to some of those stories y >> um but we just won't we'll just never know that. So, um, again, let me get through the chat here. We'll read the press release and then we can move on to some other, uh, uh, thoughts and conversations about this, right? [00:13:05]Now that would certainly be uh somebody with MLS experience. Um the Leslie's are in here. So shout out to A at work. We never try to touch that stuff. E and Scott saying, "This is really insane, but if they were going to do this, glad they did it now and not waiting until the end of the season." And I agree with that for sure. Um, because like you said yesterday, and we're far from the first people, right? I think clearly there are multiple clubs in MLS. We're the fifth team to fire their head coach already this season and like again we are not the only ones to point out that this is a unique opportunity in the middle of this season to push the reset button. Um I just didn't know we were double lever in the Austin FC offices, dude. And like also just heads up for the North End Faithful. We have also made a change here. We've fired our lever technician and we're going to work on hiring somebody new during the break this summer. Uh, Silverblade in here saying, "I was watching your podcast earlier where y'all were talking about Nico and Roto when [laughter] I found out they got fired." Yeah. So, that's, you know, again, just delete that part from your memory. Capricious saying Roto was a surprise to her. Shout out KP. Um, and yeah, I think that's I was my reaction was, "Oh my god."

And now you wake up and you get, well, some people might have woke up a little earlier. Um, now you get, you know, Nico and Roto out. And, you know, I, you know, again, I I think like what's the second half of this season going to look like for this team? Who's safe now? Anyone on this roster? Are is anyone safe now?

And like that's something that some fans mentioned, right, with Roto coming in brand new to the league. Um, >> and I think it it it's really hard to make a strong argument that it didn't hinder him in his job coming in. And he's mentioned, right? He said that's it's taken me longer than I thought >> to get this roster, right?

I'm upset that he's fired here. um you know and listening to Soccerwise them chat about like you know go to some of the organizations you like and interview you know their second in command or or someone involved in the front office and see what it looks like. Uh and then go from there. Um, again, I'm just I am very concerned for the second half of this season now and for a majority of this roster and like going through another rebuild >> just doesn't sound great to me even though things aren't great right now.

You know, I think ultimately, you know, when you look at who came in this off seasonason and who went out, I think it was a an improvement for sure. And um you know I talked about it with with how I felt about Nico where it's just like yeah we had some bad injury luck to start this season. We had some unfortunate results that just didn't go our way uh with things that are out of the coach's control where someone's down and you get scored on a second time. But ultimately if you're not finding ways to get points and like I also said that on the episode where it was just like you know when have we pointed to a game and it was just like Nico just won us three points there because of how we played that game adjustments in the game to see it out through 90. And if you're not making up those type of wins when you're dropping unfortunate points in unlucky situations and you're you've been bad there's just you got nothing to stand on. Um, >> good to see Sarah in here saying Roto's job is to know people and dynamics and to hire the right people. He didn't do his job and I don't think it's just the coaching. I think it goes way past that.

[00:22:26]Again, a lot of fair takes. I think uh on both sides of this discussion right now, Preston here saying he must have fought for Nico to get the job and said it's on me if it fails. Look what Ari's got here. Maybe from a credible press source, Ari's heard through the grapevine that Roto accidentally [ __ ] talked BHI via text directly to him.

Um, and I do think, you know, with this question in particular, how many times have we seen dudes, you know, who we thought be like, "Hey, man, you should be able to really play in this league. You should be a player in this league." And then it you watch the tape and it's just like, "Damn, you look slow." are you just like like you're not ready for the pace of MLS right now and the athletes that are in this league.

[00:26:21]So, uh I do think it's more important for the director, but um you know I again I don't know if there's like a something that's just like solidified that the word is escape and an absolute where it's like one way or another if you go out and get a dude who's got no muscle experience but he's a you know he's a dog I'm I'm excited about that >> for sure. Mki's in here saying Nico definitely out, but Roto has been bringing great talent to our club. I feel Nico and the coaching staff failed these players. And Joey also saying it's it's worrisome to have to rebuild, but we weren't getting any better. Nothing the team did suggested we were going to improve in any major way, so you might as well rebuild, right? So again, like takes from all across the spectrum in here. Um, >> and also it's just been, you know what I mean? Like we're we're in this league right now and the greatest player of all time is playing in this league and they have ways to get all of his buddies over here. You saw that we pulled up the roster sheet last night. [laughter] >> Yeah.

[00:27:20]>> Messi's making more than the entire Philadelphia Union team. Yeah.

[00:27:24]>> I think the third or fourth hardest guy is Rodrigo Depal.

[00:27:27]>> So like you're >> he's three. He's three.

[00:27:29]>> You know, you're in a spot right now where it's like that >> is like the standard for winning a cup and winning championships and trophies in this league. And it's like how can you possibly catch that and like make that happen, >> you know? And like obviously I you want to compete with these guys who want to go out there and do it. But like that is just such an interesting kind of uh you know top tier echelon clubs and then clubs like where we find ourselves and you know still it's like the fit with Auni and BV was not ideal to begin with and that that's on Roto too. You know what I mean? Did did the coaching staff need to do more to get that to work better and find a way that it looked a little better? Um, for sure. But like Roto brought both of those guys in and they have overlapping skill sets and again on soccer-wise, you know, they're talking about Aonyi and Goss is bringing up how it's like I've never seen the dude beat someone oneon-one. You know what I mean? I've never seen it happen.

[00:28:30]I've never seen him just like blow past the back line and go get us a [ __ ] goal. And um again, you know, Roto brought him in. I I understand where people are coming from with with with some of this. I just personally don't agree with it. And I'm still shocked that Roto's taken down because of Nico Estz and it's one and a half seasons of coach.

And uh that does actually bring me to an email that I got from coach uh this morning. So look, if you and coach, I'm going to I'm going to brag on you here a little bit, right? Because I am a hilltop for E >> legend.

[00:29:18]Cal, coach Cal, legendary coach, uh women's soccer there at St. Edwards here in town. So look, E, 10 conference titles, two tournament titles, 12 NCAA tournament appearances, right? at one point an 11-year streak of tourney appearances. Multiple Sweet 16s and Elite 8, seventime H Heartland coach of the year, two-time regional coach of the year, Hartland Conference Hall of Famer, >> RIP to the H Heartland Conference. Uh, but coach was apparently, he said, writing this message to me. Uh, and I will credit Coach Cow as somebody who has elevated, I would say, our soccer knowledge, but certainly me and I've always appreciated him for for supporting us in what we're doing here.

[00:30:00]coach said luckily he missed the game uh in person this weekend so didn't have to be there for that but he says he's he's writing this as both a season ticket holder for Austin and someone who spent his professional life coaching developing players building teams and trying to win this is not about being negative for the sake of it it's about standards and again writing this an hour before the the news or like while the news came out the twoame stretch before the break should have been managed with one clear goal get at least three points pregame odds suggested something like roughly uh you know a San Diego 50% win quart 25% draw 25% Austin win sporting KC 60% Austin win split the remaining 40 between a draw and a sporting win says on paper I understand the temptation to rotate heavily away save your strongest group for the home game and hope to win the second match but in my opinion that was a fundamentally flawed strategy you do not voluntarily turn a twoame problem into a one-ame problem unless the first game is truly unwinable and there are some extreme physical or medical reasons to protect players. In MLS, that is almost never the case. Away games are still there to be competed for. You can get points through set pieces, transition moments, opponent mistakes, red cards, or simply by staying organized and making the home team feel pressure. Ironically, we saw that ex we saw exactly that kind of possibility in the Sporting KC match. By heavily rotating against San Diego, Austin FC wasted a real chance to compete for points. Worse, it placed enormous pressure on the second game. Once you effectively throw away the first match, the home game becomes a must-win.

[00:31:35]Players feel that, opponents feel that, and when the opponent has success pressing, doubt starts to spread. For me, the biggest issue isn't just tactical, it's cultural. When a coach sends out a heavily rotated group in a match like San Diego, what message does that send? The starters may feel the staff has conceded the game. The reserves may feel like sacrificial pieces rather than trusted professionals. You normalize the idea that some games matter and some do not and that's dangerous. Professional players cannot be asked to compete only in certain games. Every game has to matter and every player selected has to believe that the staff thinks they can contribute to a result. My preferred approach would have been much more balanced. Target at least a draw in San Diego with limited rotation. Rest a maximum of three key players if needed, but keep the spine of the team intact.

[00:32:22]goalkeeper, a center back, a central midfielder, and a forward. When I saw the San Diego lineup, my immediate reaction was that the team looks spineless. If you're going to rotate, you ste still need a clear game model.

[00:32:33]Be compact. Be low risk. Prioritize defensive transition. Make set make set pieces a weapon. Give reserves very specific jobs. Do not just put them in a situation where the mission feels like survive, survive. [laughter] That is unfair to them and damaging to the team. Some players look completely unsure of their roles. John Bell looked like he had no idea what he was supposed to be doing. John Coleman looked disengaged. Whether that is on him, the staff, or the relationship between the two, it points to a deeper problem.

[00:33:04]Players like Micah Burton may be excited to play. But when too many second choice players are thrown together without a stable structure, they can end up looking like sacrificial lambs, and that is bad player management. Then you have the impact of losing 5-nil. A defeat like that does not just hurt the league table. It damages confidence, the media narrative, supporter trust, and the emotional tone of the group going into the ne next match. Goal difference matters, but momentum does too. The most worrying part of this stretch, though, is the body language and effort level.

[00:33:35]Seeing players not chase back, seeing poor reactions, flat body language in the Kansas City game, that suggests that something is fundamentally broken. The lack of effort should be non-negotiable.

[00:33:46]If certain players don't give full effort, they should not represent the club again until that standard is restored. Full effort is not a tactical detail. It is the minimum requirement. I also think coach Nico looks like he feels like the walls are closing in based on that postgame interview. I'm not saying he doesn't know the game. He clearly understands training exercises, tactical ideas, and the details of football. But coaching is not just session design. Coaching is management.

[00:34:11]It's motivating players, selecting teams, building trust, create creating clarity, and getting people to perform under pressure. Right now, too many decisions seem to be demoralizing the group rather than strengthening it.

[00:34:22]Strengthening it. There is also a broader accountability issue around the club. The supporter section creates an incredible atmosphere and I have no criticism of the energy they bring. But support cannot mean ignoring what is happening on the field. If players are not giving maximum effort and the team is underperforming, blind positivity during games can become a part of the problem. We all want the club to succeed, but success requires honesty.

[00:34:47]There has been there has to be accountability across the whole club, players, coach, ownership, and yes, supporters, too. A serious soccer club needs all of its stakeholders to demand standards. Austin FC Austin FC should not be in a place where effort is optional, where certain games are treated as disposable or where poor poor performances are excused because the atmosphere is good. The North End deserves a team that competes every minute. Season ticket holders deceive a deserve a team with a clear plan.

[00:35:15]Players deserve a staff that puts them in positions to succeed. And the club deserves leadership that refuses to let standards slide. The issue is not losing one game. The issue is the pattern.

[00:35:26]flawed squad management, damaged trust, poor body language, unclear roles, and a culture that currently looks too comfortable with underperformance and that has to change. So again, coach Nick Cowl giving his extended thoughts to us here in the North End on a Monday. Uh, and I can like look, I would say first, if you like that, you go listen to Beyond the Touchline with Adrien Healey and coach Nick Cow, right? Talking about the World Cup leading up uh to the tournament this summer. But if you like that type of of insight, uh, that type of rhetoric, you're going to get stuff like that. Of course, from Adrian, we see the post that he puts out. He's got 240 characters to do that, right? You see what coach Nick wrote here. Um, hard to disagree with anything about that. And I will also say we're hoping to get both coach and Adrian on for a little World Cup preview here in the North and sometime in the, you know, once the World Cup break begins here and before the tournament kicks off. So, I would thank coach once again for his thoughts because I thought it was way more well said than anything we could ever put together here.

And again, I think it's just like it's so many factors, but at the end of the day, a lot of us, I feel like, are coming back around to the fact that just like it's just not good enough. And like it's hard to make a strong defense of anything, right? And to me that includes the ownership, right? Because ultimately you guys are hiring all of the you hired Barrell, >> you know? Um >> what's the other poll that you wanted to put up here? uh if you thought last season was overall a success for the club.

Um, well, how do you I guess as I create this new new poll for you here, E, I think it's still it's hard for me to like sit here and and look at anybody saying that Anthony Precourt doesn't want to win and like not just not roll my eyes because like the money that we spent on the roster, even if it's been um foolhardy in the way like if you feel like that, okay, but like you can't say that the guys aren't spending money in the top third of the league because that's just it's not subjective, right?

And like making this sweeping move >> like again I just I think >> one thing you can guarantee is Anthony Precourt like wants to win and I guess like if you're a hardcore anti-recourt person. Um then like you probably say this is a business move because season ticket renewals are coming up, right?

He doesn't want to win because you look around this league, there are so many other ways to try to keep up the business and the profits without, you know, continuing to fire massive amounts of money on these DP transfers. Um, >> yeah, he's opened up the checkbook a lot. So, I I respect him for that for sure. There's plenty of owners in this league and across sports that don't want to spend. Um, and and Tony has been willing to do that. So, I respect that.

[00:38:51]Has that me meant that every dollar gone to some of these players has has been well worth it and and justified and we got the maximum ROI on the uh old investment there? No. You know, plenty of guys haven't worked out. It hasn't looked entirely great. Um but yeah, it just like if we're talking about like putting, you know, the pressure on and everything now, it's like you you can't [ __ ] miss this higher >> because it's like you just going to be in purgatory for the next four years again. Are we just like are we doing three years of like we got to rebuild now, revamp the roster and and get a coach and and do all that? And like to to your point about maybe why this was part of the you know the the downfall for for Roto was that we have seen teams flip it way faster um in less amount of time. I'm not privy to their entire cap situation and what was going on. I find it hard to believe that they would be in um you know a worse spot than Austin was uh when we started out 2023 with how that was looking and everything. But there there's all kinds of success stories where that happens. And there's all kinds of stories like look at Atlanta, right? Look at Atlanta last year, what they did brought all those guys in and it hasn't worked for them and they've been terrible as well. And like, you know, it it's interesting to see how this league goes because it hasn't just been a guaranteed lock where it's like you just throw money at some dudes and they're coming here and they set the league on fire. And to coach Cal's point, putting that pressure on yourself for the SKC game and I still maintain that you [ __ ] should have won that game no matter what. You know, pressure or not. No matter what. Um, you know, it did it did ultimately, I think, lead to this because again, it just didn't seem like they were going to do it.
