Fixing My Biggest Oversight at the New Airport

[00:00:00]When you want to take a build from reminiscent of the real thing to this feels right, you have to look at the small details. Take our airport out here. The layout's fine, but the details are completely wrong. New BAP has a cold and snowy climate, yet there isn't a parking garage in sight. Flying in? Hope you don't need a car because there's nowhere to rent one. Miss your flight?

[00:00:18]Well, you're sleeping on a bench at the airport because there isn't a hotel for kilome. Those are the details that break immersion, and they're exactly what you told me to fix. But the biggest change I want to make is connecting New Band's tram to the airport. I think the route would be really popular, and it will supercharge tourism in the region. So, we'll work on creating a line that's quick, rational, and honestly, a tourism amenity in its own right. And we've got a lot to build. So, let's jump right in.

[00:00:44]We're going to begin with parking because I love parking.

[00:00:48]This parking lot doesn't make any sense.

[00:00:51]This would basically be free parking because it's not controlled at all and there is no covered parking. So, what I want to do is go back to the drawing board here and give this a bit more thought. And what I'm thinking is we're going to place a structured parking facility right here and reduce the number of ingress and egress opportunities so that we can control it so you could have to pay to get in here.

[00:01:11]Now, I've got a a really unconventional asset that I want to use in here. I want to place the city bus station. And that might sound like the weirdest asset to use here, but it's actually perfect.

[00:01:24]So, this thing is a gigantic parking facility. And you can make it even more gigantic, which we are going to do. We can also add a taxi stop right in the front. So, now all of those stops that we added right here that really were kind of inappropriately placed, well, we can get rid of those.

[00:01:42]So, this street right here is going to go away. It might come back as a dedicated pedestrian facility. And we'll put a road right here.

[00:01:53]Now, next, I want to adjust the colors of this. It has this kind of a greenish color, which I actually like. I I've talked about how I like green because it blends in with the trees, but I feel like it should be a little bit darker.

[00:02:05]And then I want to adjust the additional levels on here. So, I just have to select that. And now I can paste the color there, too. And I should do the exact same thing to the airport. Now they match. Now before I forget, I'm going to grab that bus route and just pull it on in here. And this is doing some really funky stuff cuz we have a waypoint right there. Now it's fixed.

[00:02:24]Now let's think about the rest of the parking facility. We're going to load off from this street right here.

[00:02:45]Okay. So, what I've done is completely altered the vehicular circulation pattern in here. Now, there is only one way in. It's right up here. And when you're funneled in here, you can only go in. Out here, there are two ways out, but it funnels down to this one road right here. This is the only way out.

[00:03:03]Now, ultimately, what this has done for us is given us the ability to put some sort of a pay feature right here. some sort of a gate. So, we're absolutely going to do that, but we've got to fix our surfaces first.

[00:04:00]And okay, I didn't think that my surface work could get any mess here, but this is way messier if you look under the hood. But if you ignore all of that, it's actually really good. And this this is really really functional. One way in, one way out. I ended up upgrading these temporarily to be two ways to get the correct width because I want it to feel like we are funneling people out of here. And then coming in, it's very narrow and that I think is completely fine. So now let's add the small details that will take this up to the next level, like a gate to get in. I feel like some sort of a canopy over this area might be nice as well. We'll give some queuing distance and move that way back there. And let's be extra crazy and add a stop line. Perfect. Same sorts of details over here.

[00:04:57]And that's looking really good. One last thing with the parking lots and that's the lighting.

[00:05:14]That looks really good in my opinion. I ended up stealing the light from our uh bus station over here and pulling it all the way through just so we have some visual consistency. And I think it looks really really good. I'll also redo a bit of the landscaping.

[00:05:43]Now, this makes a ton more sense. So, let's continue. And I think the next thing I want to do is think about rental cars. I've been eyeballing this location over here as a potentially really good spot for a rental car lot. So, what I'm going to do is grab this street and I want to parallel along the side of here.

[00:06:06]Now, I think I want to have the rental car offices right about here. And I feel like something like this low density southwestern commercial building is really going to fit the bill if we can make the parking lot bigger. So I right now this looks like fast food, but we can change that. First of all, let's use the company changer. We'll change this to vehicles and then lock it. Then I'm going to get rid of the fence, some of the random props, and then I want to adjust the pathing in here because this doesn't make sense. Now, basically what I want to do here is the exact same thing that I did over here, except that I'm going to plop a whole bunch of cars.

[00:06:56]Okay. And this is looking pretty good now for a start, but we have my nemesis here that I have to address. It's basically all of these lines. These are not possible to be deleted. But what we can do is cover them up with certain surfaces. So I want to see if Sully's concrete will cover them up. It will not. But Alendo basically focuses on this, but not the stuff that I have. So, the only thing that I could do would be to extend this pavement. And honestly, I think I'm going to Now, let's add some cars. And I'm going to try to be fairly organized about this.

[00:08:06]We also have to have some lighting in here. And I want to grab this lighting.

[00:08:09]once again.

[00:08:16]And lastly, a bit of landscaping.

[00:08:21]And even though this is quite a ways away from the airport, I feel like we have to have some sort of a PE connection over here to shorten it up at least.

[00:08:32]So, I think I'll go with something like that, then get rid of all these extra crosswalks. And honestly, I think that there are a number of those throughout this entire area. Why don't I take care of those right now?

[00:08:46]Much better. And I feel like this is now a cohesive part of the airport. But before we move on from this area, there's one thing I have to adjust over here. You might have noticed this in the last one. There is some weird despawning action happening right here. And I think that my pathing got all screwed up here.

[00:09:03]Here. I tried to make some adjustments off camera and it still didn't fix it.

[00:09:06]So, what I'm going to do is just clone this thing temporarily. Move it over there.

[00:09:13]Then I'll move it back over here, but a little bit further away from this asset.

[00:09:17]Then I just want to look at all the pathing that I added. And truthfully, here's the way we're going to resolve it.

[00:09:28]And now just looking at this, when I click on the asset, it's now showing me 118% efficiency, which means that it is working. So I feel like it's probably not going to have that despawning issue.

[00:09:39]And looking at the asset, the invisible paths are not touching. And I think that that was ultimately the issue last time.

[00:09:45]So this should be just fine. One thing I've got to do, though, I want to recolor these. I don't want them to all be yellow.

[00:09:56]And then I'm going to add some semi-props once again, but I'm going to do it differently than last time because an actual semi-d driver chimed in in the comments and said that it's actually not unusual to see a trailer by itself if the truck actually needs to go in for maintenance or something like that or the driver goes home. So, we are going to add this to most of them, but not all of them.

[00:10:21]And there we go. I think that that is looking a ton better. Now, speaking of professionals chiming in, a firefighter chimed in and said that uh this is a nice start for our fire protection, but we also need to have just a normal fire station here. And it should probably feel like it's more a part of this campus here because if a fire were to happen, the last thing you'd want to have happen is is them drive from way over here to over here. So, I think that we're going to relocate some of these smaller uses to make it a part of the airport campus while leaving this over here. So, to do that, I think I'm going to place these right about here. But, I want to modify this road because all of this wide sidewalk action just doesn't sit well with me. We're going to drop the speed down to 20 km hour because it's the airport still. No parking here.

[00:11:12]and we'll narrow the shoulder to I believe 3 m to be consistent with what we had before. Just looking at this, it's actually 2 and 1/2. But even with that, it just doesn't join perfectly.

[00:11:24]And in this particular instance, I may need to forgive a bit of imperfection.

[00:11:28]Or alternatively, I think I actually like this solution better. I'm going to turn this into a zonable highway. And now uh that the sidewalk just kind of drops off. So, the whole benefit of this is that now I can grab this police station and relocate this over here. Same thing with our medical clinic.

[00:11:51]And we'll also place a small firehouse.

[00:11:53]And I think I might go with the southwestern one here, which should feel fairly appropriate.

[00:11:59]Though, I still don't love the placement of this.

[00:12:12]And I think ideally this would actually be a onelane road so it doesn't feel like there's priority here.

[00:12:22]So I'll modify that. And to try to improve the visuals, I'm also getting rid of the sidewalks there.

[00:12:34]And then a couple more things. I'm going to grab the color here and paste it onto these buildings.

[00:12:46]That honestly didn't do all that much because this building is not recolorable. So, I'll grab the pavements and try to make them the same. That actually does quite a bit visually.

[00:12:55]We'll add cohesive landscaping.

[00:13:02]And then I think most importantly, we're going to change the fencing at the airport itself to have this encapsulated in there. I also think I want to add some invisible pads that connect these up with the internals of the airport.

[00:13:38]Okay. And now I'm going to add fencing all the way around here.

[00:13:54]And I think that this looks really good and it feels like it's a part of the airport, which is what we were going for. But you might have noticed this makes it impossible for us to add the cargo rail upgrade. And I guess I think that that's okay. I've been giving this a lot of thought and I read through a lot of the comments and it seemed like, you know, a lot of you thought that if we add it, we add it just because it's cool. And the rest of you thought we shouldn't add it because it didn't make sense. And I I'm inclined to agree with the latter group. I don't know that it makes sense. In fact, another thing that was mentioned that didn't make sense, this would not be an international airport. It would be a regional airport.

[00:14:26]You'd probably fly out Calgary. So, there would be a flight from here to Calgary and then Calgary to wherever else we're going. So, I'm going to take this rename this. And we will bring rail here, but it's going to be light rail, not cargo rail. But before we do that, let's add a couple of hotels here. And because this airport district's fairly new, I think that there's one asset that's going to make more sense than almost any other. It's this USA Southwestern Motel 6x4.

[00:14:52]This looks kind of like a Lita or something like that. And these are ubiquitous all across North America. So, I feel like this is the kind of thing you'd expect to see out here. The main reason for that is this isn't a hotel that you place because someone wants to visit the airport. It's because they have a layover or they missed their flight and they need a place to stay.

[00:15:11]So, that is the exact kind of airport hotel I'd expect to see as a result. So, I'm going to plop two of these temporarily because I need to look at the terrain. This is not Yeah, this is not the right location for it. Perhaps right here near the wall McDonald's rather.

[00:15:28]We could place this right on the highway, but maybe we shouldn't.

[00:15:39]So, instead, I'll encroach upon the forest just a little bit here. here. I know that we're trying not to do that, but this is one spot where I think it's probably appropriate. Next, I want to add some parking around here. And it looks like all the spots were pllopped on this asset. So, I'm going to plop mine and then just add around it.

[00:16:23]Now, I've encroached upon the water a bit, and we're just not going to let perfect be the enemy of good here. I'm just going to just going to do what I need to do to make this work.

[00:16:34]Not exactly the height of realism, but it's the height of making me happy. So, sometimes you got to do that.

[00:16:53]Heat. Heat.

[00:17:12]And then I think for both of these I'm going to take this main color and paste that green again. Actually I dislike that but I will just take this color and move it over there so they match. And this to me feels like exactly what you'd expect to find at this kind of place.

[00:17:25]Next I want to add a few more distribution centers. And I think I want to start out with the extra large one to see if there is a spot where I could place this. And reasonably, this thing is just massive. If I put it anywhere, it's probably got to be up here. But I think if I were to use it, it's just because I want to use it, not because it fits. So, I'm not going to. I think I'm going to place this one right here and move our uh firefighting helicopter. And then I'm going to add two more medium ones up here.

[00:17:57]And I think for these, I'll try to make it feel like they're a part of the same complex. First things first, I've got to move the firefighting helicopter. And I think I could probably just place that right here.

[00:18:14]I was able to move the landscaping so I didn't lose any of that.

[00:18:19]After just a couple of adjustments, it looks good as new. The only thing I've got to do is modify the hillside just a little bit. And that's okay. Grading is fine. That happens in the real world, too.

[00:18:32]And just reasonably, what would probably happen would be that the architecture of the building and the structure of the parking lot would be modified to fit the terrain. And that's something that's obviously not very easy to do in the game. So, you got to take some liberties. You've got to take some liberties. It's not that big of a deal.

[00:18:47]So, now I want to provide a frontage road just like I did over here. I'll snap onto the side of this one, but I might as well just go for the alleyway.

[00:19:03]And this thing is fully operational. 279 jobs. That's wild.

[00:19:11]I think for this one, I'm going to add Canadian Tire to this.

[00:19:19]And we'll just imagine that this is their primary distribution center for this entire region. I really, really like that. Now up here, I want to make this feel like a cohesive site. So I'm going to extend this road up here.

[00:19:33]Then I'm going to begin to curve it this way. And that's just because I don't want this to the dead dead end right here. It's an arterial after all. Not sure where it goes in the future, but this at least gives us options. Then I'm going to once again grab that alleyway.

[00:19:47]And truthfully, the more I look at this, the more I think that we should just extend the alley through here as well.

[00:19:52]And now we'll add the alley around this site.

[00:20:10]And I kind of decided to change my plans on the fly. And the main reason for that is there's really no reason to smash these together. But we could just spread these apart kind of just like I did and then create an internal circulation that I think makes some decent sense. This also opens up other lots for development in the future. Right here, right here, over here. So, this to me makes a bit more sense. The only thing I want to do is try to more logically lay this out.

[00:20:35]So, perhaps something like that. And that opens up this area right here for storm water detention, green space, or maybe some other business. But for now, it's fully operational. It's connected to power and water, and it's good to go.

[00:20:49]So, that leaves us with one other major project, and uh this one is going to be a fun one. Basically, I want to remove all the parking right here and add a light rail station. So, to do that, I'm just going to go into this asset and remove all these parking spots. No big deal. They'll just all park inside of here. Going to also get rid of this lighting and modify these surfaces. And I have one small regret.

[00:21:15]We are going to keep this road right here. So, I'm going to bring this surface back. And the main reason for that is I still want cars to be able to circulate through here and drop people off right out front. But I also want you to be able to take a tram here. So, I'm going to grab this single track tram station and plop it right up front. Now, this asset's awesome. It's from Grunie.

[00:21:35]And if it's from you know it's really good. It's nice and small and it fits perfectly along this road. We'll be able to run the track right here. here.

[00:21:43]We might need to adjust a few things along the way, but I feel like this is the perfect location for it. So, I'm just going to snap on right here.

[00:21:53]And I see one issue already. We need this to be birectional.

[00:21:59]So, that means that our station might actually be problematic. And perhaps instead I have to go with this one that has the island in the center.

[00:22:10]And oh dear, I don't know. I don't know what I just did to the airport, but it is now unhappy. I'm going to try to get rid of that track.

[00:22:21]And just reasonably, this car path here is going to be a problem.

[00:22:29]So perhaps the solution is just to get rid of all of those, maintain those pedestrian connections.

[00:22:38]And honestly, if you wanted to drop off, you could do it right here on Myrtle Street at your own peril, obviously.

[00:22:43]Now, I'm going to try this again, but with a siding platform.

[00:22:49]And maybe so that I don't screw up all the circulation, I'll move it to this side.

[00:23:00]And now we'll work to get the track out of here. The only problematic area is going to be right here. You see that this building is just in the way. So I'm going to try to bump the entire airport back. The absolute height of realism.

[00:23:16]That gives me just enough space to get this out. Although the track is crooked.

[00:23:24]And it's not enough space. It's close, but not enough.

[00:23:30]I was hoping that that would be good, but it seems like the building is now disconnected.

[00:23:38]And that's about where I have to have it.

[00:23:42]But I think that this is doable now.

[00:23:49]And it is for sure not happy with me.

[00:23:52]But I think it will do the trick.

[00:23:58]This has also created some issues with the fences that we just placed.

[00:24:05]So, I'll add new ones back in. And now we are good to go all the way to downtown. But we need to figure out a route. And what I'm thinking is we're going to want to go through the hill down here. And then I want it to be incredibly scenic. I want it to go along the river and back basically towards the mountain down here. Then it's going to get a bit diceier and we're probably going to run on the road for a little while and maybe get back down to our uh existing track network down here. So, I think I'm going to start in an unusual location. Basically, right here, I want to get over the top of the highway and figure out how we get over the river.

[00:24:47]Now, here I want to take as little of the farm's property as possible.

[00:25:01]Now, we need to make our way back to the airport.

[00:25:10]That looks terrible, but I think I can fix it. My main goal now is just going to be to link these together. I'm going to use complex curve for that.

[00:25:24]And that's a 3.9% grade, which is not very good, but it is popping out right there. And that makes me think that maybe we can fix this. So, I'm going to slope from inside of the hill if I can.

[00:25:37]So, we'll start here and then go back to maybe about here. That will take us Well, that's an ease slope. So, if we do constant 3.8, it's pretty steep, but ultimately I might forgive a bit of imperfection. Oh, I cannot. That's really bad.

[00:25:55]So, let's go for round two. Going to start there. And I'm going to try this easing in and out. And I'm wondering if I do something like that. It's mostly flat right here. And then I'm taking most of the Actually, it's sorry, it's mostly flat over here. And I'm dropping it down right here, which does improve it. It's a little bit better. I think I'm gonna cheat a little bit.

[00:26:25]Okay, clearly not the height of realism, but ultimately tunneling is kind of a mess in this game. This is a way that I can make it work. So, the way that I'm going to improve this is basically to push dirt around and just imagine that maybe we grab some of the dirt from up here, moved it over here for our uh light rail project. The other thing I want to do is add a node right here.

[00:26:48]Maybe not even that. Basically, I just don't want this to be quite as long as it is. Looks pretty crazy. I'll add a node right there. Even I don't know what it's doing. It is very unhappy. Oh, I see the airport is right here. That is the problem that I'm making this 100 times harder on myself. I need to either drop immediately or accept a bit of imperfection.

[00:27:27]You know, this isn't perfect, but I can probably live with it. So, let me just try to make this look a little bit more natural.

[00:27:35]And really, what that comes down to is using a gigantic brush size because now it's really nicely hidden. You couldn't even really tell what's going on. So, then we get into the hill right here.

[00:27:47]You know what? I think we stay elevated.

[00:27:49]We don't need to drop down. It's fine.

[00:27:51]We're going to have a fairly significant bridge anyway to get across here. And at this point, I think that we're viewing this as a tourism amenity anyway.

[00:28:02]So, we are okay with this incredibly long bridge.

[00:28:08]Now, we get back down to ground level.

[00:28:10]We need to figure out the routing for this. I want to minimize the number of bridges. So, if I can take this down to just two, it's probably my best bet.

[00:28:18]Maybe one right here and one right here.

[00:28:21]And that is about it.

[00:28:29]Now, because this is rail, I want to minimize lumpies and bumpies, and I also want sweeping angles.

[00:28:44]Now, a couple of these segments will need to be bridged. We're going to do that after the fact. I just want to figure out my routing first.

[00:29:04]Okay. So, now we need to figure out how we get over to the existing tram network. Okay. And here's what I'm thinking. We need to make our way up the side of the river right here.

[00:29:19]We also need to upgrade the road.

[00:29:25]And we'll do something like that. That should do the trick for us.

[00:29:36]And then finally, let's link into the rest of our network, which should be fairly simple at this point. All we have to do is extend to here. Now, it's fully connected, but there's a couple of spots where we need to make some adjustments.

[00:29:48]Like right here, for instance, I want this to be a much more realistic and reasonable length. So, I'm going to reslope this and push dirt around before the bridge.

[00:30:03]It's also kind of a sharp turn right here. I'll fix this one.

[00:30:10]And again, fix the span length.

[00:30:22]Pa pa pa.

[00:30:44]And now this thing is fully connected and cleaned up. So, let's get our routing set up. And we're going to go incredibly basic. We'll start here.

[00:30:51]We'll make a stop over here on Popular Street. And then we'll finish up the route.

[00:30:58]And then we'll call this airport. And because everything at the airport is green, I'm going to make this one green.

[00:31:02]Now, this is a 23 km route, so it's fairly long. So, they're going to throw a million vehicles at it. I'm going to say two is enough. And we'll make it free. Actually, this is an airport service. This will be the one that we charge for. We'll make it five CAD. And then we're out of vehicles. So, I'm going to apply this upgrade, which will give us six more. I'll also have to do this. maybe even adjust this road because things are looking pretty bad here.

[00:31:33]And I basically just had to use some eminent domain on homes, vacate some right away, and move this facility. Just small things.

[00:31:40]But the ultimate result is that we have our first tram going out to the airport, and it's already got passengers. Now, to wrap things up, I just want to make sure that we're cleaning things up out here cuz I messed a whole bunch of stuff up.

[00:31:56]So, I've added a whole bunch of pathing through here. I'm going to add all my trees back.

[00:32:16]And then lastly, we have to have our Canadian flag.

[00:32:22]And my goodness, this was one heck of a build. I feel like every suggestion that you guys made improved the build in one way or another. Be it more logical parking, support uses that you'd expect to find in an airport, or just additions that bring a lot more life to the space.

[00:32:38]But my favorite improvement without a doubt is the trams. And we just got to see how much utilization this is getting. You can see there's already 248 passengers waiting here to go to downtown B. And at the Popler Street station, there's 154. So, this is clearly a popular tram line. This was a very needed piece of infrastructure. We actually see our first tram rolling in right now, and it's not even able to fully clear the queue. So, I'm going to bring one more vehicle online. Now, in terms of what this has done for our airport, we now have 487 customers per month, which is a fairly substantial improvement over the 70 that we had before. But but this is City Skylines 2 and airlines just don't get as much use as I think that they should. Our tram network on the other hand is just crushing it. So many people using the trams at this point and this new line is going to be another reason that it's successful. But I think that on the balance this has moved new BAMP in the right direction.
