Specialized proteins such as mechanosensitive ion channels are embedded in the lipid bilayer. When the membrane is stretched or deformed, these proteins physically pull open allowing ions to rush in. This is how our ears turn sound vibration into electrical signals and how our blood vessels know to dilate when blood pressure increases. The membrane is literally the cell's interface with the physical laws of the universe.
