David’s painting masterfully reframes a state execution as a final, defiant lecture on the immortality of truth. It serves as a poignant reminder that for the truly wise, death is not a tragedy but the ultimate pedagogical statement.

Socrates chose to die — and painted his own execution as a lecture. | 123 Art FactsAdded:
Socrates chose to die, and painted his own execution as a lecture.
Jacques-Louis David painted the death of Socrates in 1787.
In this neoclassical scene, Socrates sits upright on his deathbed, surrounded by grieving disciples in a stone prison cell, calm while everyone else falls apart. A young disciple thrusts the hemlock cup forward, face turned away, unable to watch. Socrates reaches for it without hesitation. Down on the stone floor, broken shackles and a rolled scroll. His imprisonment is already over. Philosophy remains.
One finger points skyward, while his other hand grabs the poison. Socrates treats his own death as his final argument. Was Socrates heroically principled or needlessly throwing his life away?
